Aperture Images on External Drive/Screensaver Can't Find

Hi all,
I've searched the discussions and haven't been able to find threads addressing my specific question.  I can't get my MacBook Pro (running OS x10.6/Snow Leopard) to use my Aperture Library for my screensaver.  My entire Aperture library (currently about 50,000 images) is on an external hard drive - am wondering if this is the issue.  When I try to add the file to the screensaver picture options, I find my external HD, but the Aperture Library is greyed out.
I have already tried the proposed remedies around weeding out weird dates and removing the timestamp file/setting the iLife folder to "read only."  I'm not interested in exporting projects or files, in part because I don't want two sets of things hanging around taking up space - I just want it to randomly choose Aperture images to display on the screen.  Another suggested work around was importing the images into iPhoto - but, again, I do not want multiple sets of these images.  Can it really be the case that I can't point the screensaver to images housed on an external drive??
I'm new to Macs in the last 6 months and mostly thrilled with the change - but this process particular was WAY easier on my PC.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi,
iTunes is trying to find your tracks on your hard drive, not those in the cloud.
I would suggest that you create a second blank iTunes library on your computer. Sign into iTunes & match, run match and when completed your music in the cloud will be shown and you will be able to stream the music to your computer.

  • After moving a folder to an external drive i can still see the images even with the external drive off

I have moved a folder with a lot of subfolders onto an external drive but when I disconnect the external drive I can still view them in Lightroom. I thought this took them off my Mac Book Drive.

The previews that LR makes for itself are small and their size can be set in Preferences. The default is around 1600 pixels wide and it should be set to the size closest to your monitor resolution.
Another feature that might interest you is the ability to make Smart Previews, either at import or later. The SP is a 2560 pixels wide DNG, whereas the normal preview is a jpg, and as such can act as a surrogate for the Raw file and can be edited in place of it when the external drive is offline. When the drive is reconnected, the edits are associated with the original.

I have just installed Photoshop Elements for a MAC. MY photos were in iPhoto, I have 47,000 pictures and my drive on my Mac laptop is not large enough. I store my photos in iPhoto on an external drive. Can I store all my photos on an external drive when using Photoshop Elements? If so, in what format should they be stored in? I do I move them from iPhoto to the new storage location? How do I call them up in organizer? And how do I call them up to Edit? I do not want to store any pictures on my Apple Mac laptop. I want to store pictures on several external devices.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • Currently my internal drive is full due to Aperture. I want to work with Aperture from a external drive verses my internal drive. In addition, I want to back-up my work to another external drive. Is this easily done? Does this make sense? Pros / Cons...

Currently my internal drive is out of space due to my Aperture files. I want to place Aperture on a external drive to work from verses in intnal drive. In addition, I want to back-up all my work to another external for safe keeping. Once I move aperture to the external, I want to delete it off my internal drive. Does this make sense to do? Pros / Cons....

It is common for people to move their Aperture, iPhoto, iTunes etc. files to an external drive when those files become too large to conveniently keep on the internal drive.
The best approach is probably to keep the applications (iPhoto, Aperture etc.) where they are now, but move the files (photos, music, videos etc.) to the external drive.
You should set up a process to regularly backup all the files from both the internal drive as well as the external drive you'll be using. Here are two approaches:
    (1) Use Time Machine. You can configure Time Machine so that it backs up both the internal drive as well as the external drive, all to a third separate backup drive. This is done via the Options button in the Time Machine preference pane.
    (2) You can use a "cloning" program, such as SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, to make complete copies of files on your internal drive and that external drive. One way to do this is to use a very large disk for the backups, and to partition it into two backup drives, making one dedicated to the internal, the other dedicated to the external.
Two separate types of backups are recommended. I use both (1) and (2) above, and I disconnect and shut down the clone type backups when not being used. That way a power failure or surge that might destroy the original disk(s) plus the Time Machine backup(s) would still not damage the backups made under (2).
Don't delete your original Aperture files until you have verified that they are working properly from the external drive AND you have made a backup of them.

Only if you move it to an external enclosure and let them both access it through a file server.

  • TS3683 Not enough space on my Mac HD to back up my iPad.   My iTunes library is on an external drive.  Can I use this same drive to Back yup my iPad?

I don't have enough space on my Mac HD to back up my iPad.   Actually, my iTunes library is on an external drive.  Can I use this same drive to Back up my iPad?

    1. First make sure iPhoto is not running. If it is, quit it. Use the Finder to copy your iPhoto Library file to your external drive. Unless you've changed it, its located inside your Pictures folder and is named "iPhoto Library".
    2. After the copy is complete, start iPhoto while simultaneously holding down the option key. iPhoto will bring up a dialog box. The file in the list is your existing Library on your internal disk. Click the "Other Library" button and navigate to your external drive. Select your freshly copied iPhoto Library file and click "Open". iPhoto will from now on open and work with this library on the external drive.
    3. After you've confirmed iPhoto is working properly with the newly copied library you may wish to delete the original library in your Pictures folder to recover the disk space.
Don't forget to keep a backup copy of your library on a separate disk. It's not a matter of "if" your external drive will fail but "when". You need to make regular backups or you'll be sorry someday.

  • My mac mini won't back up to my Seagate external drive but can read the information on it. Can i back up to it at all?

My mac mini won't back up to my Seagate external drive but can read the information on it.
Can i back up to it at all? and how do i do it?
    Simon

I suspect the Seagate is not formatted to be used with the Mac. The correct format would be Mac OS Extended (Journaled), if you just bought the EHD then almost certainly it's formatted to be used with MS Windows machines. This is easy to fix, here are instructions on how to format it:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
After formatting Time Machine http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427 will launch and will begin backing up. The first backup will take some time however after the first backup it will go pretty quickly.
NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After formatting all data will be erased, so please if you have data on that move it to the internal HD first and then format. Then once you have backed up you will have a backup copy of the data. Also NEVER EVER use a backup disk to be used to store data. The reason being is if that drive crashes you have not only lost the data you have lost it's backup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have move all Pic to new drive, lightroom can't find PSD pictures?

I have moved all pictures and LRCAT to new drive, Lightroom can't find any PSD pictures?  Is this a problem with Lightroom?

    1.        I exported all pictures using export as a catalog  to a new external hard drive.  I’m using lightroom 5.  The file was large.  I have about 3000 missing pictures after to import to new drive.  sing find, I try to find the pictures.  I discovered that lightroom could not find any pictures with .PSD extension.  I would go to the prior drive and do a search using window explorer, I would find the picture with the PSD extension and go back to “find” again,  I would get to the correct folder and Lightroom would say there were no pictures in the folder.   I’m using the “!” on the corner of the missing picture to start the “ find”  and I work backwards until I find the correct folder that I identified using windows exployer.  Normally this process works great. Suggestions?

  • How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

I had a problem a couple of months ago when iPhotos suddenly rearranged the order of my Events (Why won't iPhoto let me arrange my photos?) .  I was told "Use albums not events - events are not a good way to organize - albums and folder are designed for organisation and are very flexible".
Haha!  I should have paid attention and read between the lines!  My iPhotos were highly organised groupings - not according to date but the way I wanted them - and it was so easy to do!  I see now that if I had them all in albums, as per the Apple Apologist suggestion, I wouldn't have this unholy mess I have been left with just to make iPhone & iCloud users happy.  I am now going through Photos and making Albums (of what used to be in my Events)  ... maybe I'll get this finished before they do another non user friendly update!

  • USB External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop

I have two USB external drives from the same manufacturer. One is for regular storage, the second is for Time Machine and movies.
The first one shows everywhere, on the desktop, in finder and in Disk Utility.
The second drive shows in Disk Utility only. However, it is functioning fine with Time Machine. So it is mounted. I have tried several repairs, and it reports no fault found. So it is certainly functioning correctly, but a setting or error in the operating system is not allowing it to be viewed in finder, or on the desktop.
    Any suggestions.

Correction: Title should be Firewire External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide ~/Pictures/ as the path. If that doesn't work, control-click a photo in iPhoto, show it in the Finder, and Command-click the folder's name in the window's title bar to find the path.

  • Trying to move aperture library from USB external drive to FW 800 external drive.i can see the projects but no thumbnails. Error application not responding. Verified permissions before started. It's been 3hours. Recommendations please

I have consolidated iPhoto into aperture 3.2.2  and now have both aperture and iPhoto put consolidated library on 2.0 USB external drive. Have been removing duplicate photos from 23,000 down to 15,000. Problem in trying to close aperture and now tried to move library from 2.0 USB to 800FW and can see projects but no thumbnails. Aperture error now reads not responding. Can I repair library on 2.0 at this point?

    Sharon,
did you do anything else besides copying your library to a fire wire drive after your last post                                                                            Aperture not responding                     ?
Since that library probalbly already needed fixing, I'd recommend to force quit Aperture and use the "First Aid" to repair your Library.

  • I can no longer edit images on external drive if logged in as another user even with permission.

I have two users on my computer. Me (admin) and another log-in for assistants, clients etc.
I use an external drive to hold images.
Lately I've had a problem where if I'm logged in as Other (this side for everyone else), I often am not able to edit images even though the permissions are set for this log-in to have complete read/write capabilities?
Even sometimes when I'm logged in regularly (my admin side) I have received a "File Reservation" error. It says the file is being used by another user.   ????
Then it asks if I want to use Read-Only and do I want to be notified when the file becomes available. ????
    What's happened to my files?

Similar problem here. My Ical refuses to edit or delete events. Viewing is possible, though sometimes the whole screen turns grey. Adding new events from mail is still possible. The task-pane completely disappeared. My local apple technic-centre messed about with disk utility for a bit and than told me to reinstall leopard. I could of course do that, but it seems to me that reinstalling Leopard just to fix iCal events is a bit invasive.
I tried also tried removing everything, installing a new copy of iCal from the leopard-cd, software updates, all to no avail.
At the moment I'm open to all suggestions that do not include a complete leopard reinstall.

  • Time Machine + Aperture = 1 Fried External Drive

Hi, I'm really hoping someone can help me. Last week, I set up my first TM update on a partitioned LaCie Mini 250GB. One partition was called "Laptop Backup." I had planned to use SuperDuper for it, but decided to use Time Machine instead. The other partition contained videos and images.
I set up the partition called "Laptop Backup" as the Time Machine drive. Time Machine successfully renamed the partition and changed its icon.
I started running Time Machine. It was working fine. So I thought I would also put my Aperture library on the other partition on the same hard drive (it was previously on my internal drive).
I imported all of my photos (thousands of them) from my internal drive and another external drive into the Aperture library. That seemed to work too. So I deleted the copies of the photos elsewhere and quit Aperture.
When I quit, Aperture said it was still compiling thumbnails and asked if I wanted to let it do its thing. I clicked "OK." Time Machine was still working merrily along at this point, but both Aperture and Time Machine looked they were going to take time to finish the processes they'd started. It was late, so I let them run while I slept.
In the morning, I woke up to find that Time Machine had gotten hung-up at around 10GB (of roughly 66 GB). I tried canceling the update, and then turning off Time Machine, but nothing happened. Aperture was also hanging. I tried force-quitting the applications, but no luck. So I shut off the drive.
Since then, the drive has been really sick. It mounts (though sometimes the partition with Aperture on it doesn't mount completely), but Finder, Disk Utility, and even Activity Monitor, causes it to freeze up completely. The partition set up for Time Machine has no reverted back to its original name, "Laptop Backup." From the sounds the drive makes, it seems like it is performing one task again and again. This will continue for about 15 minutes and then it just spins.
I have repaired the permissions on my internal HD several times. But attempts to repair or verify the external HD cause the system to crash. Likewise, I tried erasing the contents of the partition with the incomplete Time Machine backup, but Disk Utility cannot unmount the disk, and gets hung up.
I tried opening the Aperture library on the other partition, through Finder, but that caused Finder to crash. It was unable even to relaunch until I turned off the external drive.
I tried deleting the Aperture preferences file (~/library/preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist, or whatever it is), but there isn't one.
I can't give up on the drive because all my photographs are there, and I need them for work. I'm really hoping there is something I can do to get at the drive, but I'm not familiar with command-line prompts and such.
Can anyone help me solve this problem? Many thanks,
    ez

    Ah, thanks. Sorry, I misunderstood.
Well, that didn't do it either, so I guess the answer to my question is that I'm pretty well f-d. I will try data recovery software. If that doesn't work, I'll find out how much a commercial data recovery service will cost and figure out if 190 GB of irreplaceable data is worth it.
Thank you both again for your helpful suggestions. I really appreciate your taking the time to help. I'll leave the thread open in case someone reading has a brainstorm, but in the meantime, thank you!
Apple, if you're reading, this is not OK. I lost huge chunks of my record collection with an iTunes update a few years back. Now I've lost all my photographs and dozens of Final Cut Pro projects, the product of years of travel and work, and I need to tell my boss that the dog ate my homework.
Too late for me, but could you please take a look at Time Machine and/or Aperture to try to make sure this doesn't happen to someone else? Seems like great, useful software, and for many people, I'm sure it is, but in this case it behaved like malware. In retrospect, my own actions were pretty stupid (loading processes like that, not keeping copies of the data elsewhere), but with a few painful exceptions, my Mac has withstood whatever I've thrown at it, and I got used to that. A temporary fix could be to limit the number of items you can add to an Aperture library at a time, or simply to prompt users to close Aperture before beginning Time Machine.
Nerowolfe, now that I've pretty much given up hope, maybe you could tell me whatever it was you didn't want to tell me I might have done? And you said that any use of the drive will probably overwrite existing data. I assume this doesn't include using data recovery software on the drive?
    Thanks again, both,
    ez
