Aperture Import: Original images saved outside library since upgrade

Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard and Aperture 2.1.4 all my images were saved in the Aperture library. I upgraded to OS X 10.6 and to Aperture 2.1.4 at the same time.
Aperture still saves the previews and the thumbnails in the library, but it saves the originals in the pictures folder, even if I add photos to projects that were created before the upgrade. In the Aperture preferences I can only find a setting for the location of the library, but not a setting to indicate that the originals should be stored somewhere else. Where can I find the setting to indicate where the original files should be stored?
The files are stored using the pattern defined under presets / folder naming. If I can't resolve the issue of the files not being stored in the library, then I will probably set my folder naming preset to "Custom name (Aperture) / Folder name / Project name". Is there a way to update older projects to move the originals out of the library to this folder structure?
Thanks,
Jasper

On the right-hand side of the import dialog, where it asks you where o store the images.

  • Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted.

Every image I have edited since upgrading to Lightroom 5 has been corrupted. First I was shooting in RAW and there was an issuw with my operating system. I upgraded to Maverick and it was supposedly fixed. Then there was an issue because LR didn't work with my camera (Nikon D90) and an update supposedly fixed that. So I finally started shooting JPEGs to try to avoid the RAW issue altogether... Now even the JPEGs say they are corrupted. I am at my wits end! Somebody please help me figure out why I can't seem to do ANYTHING anymore!

    >When I go to the files in finder, the corrupted NEFs are not able to be
seen, but the corrupted JPEGs are!
They don't open or do you get a blank screen when you try to open them or
do the files not have icons? It's a good sign that your jpegs are visible
though. That does make me think the preview database or catalog in
    Lightroom is screwed up.
    >When I try to plug the camera into the computer with a USB cord it doesn't
    recognize it
What happens when you plug the camera in turn it on and select import
photos in Lightroom? You should get to see the images on the camera. Try
different USB cables if it doesn't work. Also try changing the USB mode on
your camera. I think the old Nikons had a setting to change between PtP and
Mass storage mode. Just changing it might make it work. This all does smell
a little like the USB ports are bad on the computer something they should
be able to diagnose at the Apple Store but you might want to ask about.

  • How to make Photoshop save Aperture imported JPEG images as JPEGs

Recently, I upgraded from Photoshop CS 5 to CS 5.1.
My point and shoot cameras record in JPEG format. Often, I'll import those photos into Aperture and then tweak them in Photoshop using the Edit in External Editor command. My preferences for the external editor in Aperture were set to 8-bit, Photoshop
With Photoshop CS 5, I would edit the photo and choose Save and the edited photo would be saved back to Aperture as a new version, in a JPEG format.
Now, using Photoshop CS 5.1, when the imported image from Aperture is converted into a PSD file and when I save back to Aperture, I end up with a PSD file.
How can I revert to how it was before? JPEG image in Aperture, opened in external editor Photoshop as a JPEG, edited in Photoshop, then saved back to Aperture as a new version JPEG?
(Though this question is approached in this forum, a solution to my question is never found as each dicussion ends up going off-topic from the original question)

Any further ideas from anyone who's experienced trying to open a JPEG from Aperture in Photoshop as a JPEG?
Like I said before, you cannot open a jpeg as a jpeg, the file must be decompressed to open in PS or in Aperture, and that has always been the case.
I do not know how it used to work, but I tested and you are correct that with PS 12.1 and with Aperture 3.2.2 a JPEG sent to open in external editor (PS) is opened into your choice of lossless format and then goes back to Aperture in the lossless format you chose.
IMO this is the way it should be, because every save into JPEG loses image data, so such saves should be limited to the final export, in this case when the image actually leaves Aperture. If the file was compressed as a JPEG  when leaving PS, decompressed and edited in Aperture, then compressed again to export as JPEG from Aperture, unnecessary additional image data loss would occur.
It is always better to save the application of lossy compression until the very last step in a workflow because other usages (printing, for instance) may occur before applying the lossy compression.

  • IPhoto import: does Aperture import Original and Edited, or just Edited?

If you edit an image in iPhoto, iPhoto creates a copy of the image and stores the original in its own folder. Further edits are on the copy.
When Aperture imports from iPhoto, does it import the Original, the Edited image, or both?
My hunch is it imports the Edited image, and the Original will be lost. Love to know for sure!

When you import you'll get a stack for any image that
you have edited in iPhoto. Your edited photo will be
on top with the master behind it.
This is excellent news. With all the bad news about Aperture I'd feared the worst.

  • Deleting original images in referenced library

Stupid question - but how do you delete original images in a referenced library?  I have used the function "File>Delete original image and all versions" and I thought that this had permanently deleted some originals that I didn't want - but when I look in finder, they're still there on the hard drive, they just don't display any more in Aperture.  I can't believe you have to go and find the original file in finder to delete it...?  What have I missed?
    Thanks!

OK, have worked out that when I empty the aperture trash I need to tick the little box that says 'move referenced files to system trash' or something like that...
So...next question: how do I get the files that I've failed to delete properly back into Aperture so I can delete them properly - given that I don't know what files they are...

  • Need Help - Can't Import ANY Images into LR4.4 Since OS Upgrade

I can't import ANY images to LR 4.4 since upgrading my Mac OS to Mountain Lion 10.8.3 this past week. I downloaded LR5 Beta and all works well. I deleted LR5 Beta to see if it was conflicting with LR4.4 somehow and rebooted. Still no change. I can't import from my card reader (that says it can't even read the files) or from a location on my hard drive. I am beyond lost and frustrated.
The error message for importing is "Could not copy a file to requested location."
I need ideas. I am afraid to deleted and reinstall as I don't want to lose all my folders within. I looked all over the web and can't figure it out.
If you need any other info, please let me know. I am hopeful that someone can help me.

I added LR5 again and that works perfectly, but LR4 is still not working properly. I opened the preferences and catalog settings to compare...and they all look the same. I am beyond baffled. I don't plan on dropping more money for LR5, so I need LR4 to get back to working properly.

  • I do not have Aperture installed on my computer anymore but I do have my old library.  Is there any way to extract the ORIGINAL image from the library without having Aperture installed?

I started using Aperture back when it first came out.  I really had no idea what I was doing when I set everything up.  I got a new computer but do not have my Aperture disc anymore but I do have my old library.  I can get into the library and find the pictures in the Preview and Thumbnails folders, but these obviously are not the original pictures.  The ones in the Preview folder are only 10% of the size of the original digial photo.  I want to know if there is any way to get or reconstruct the original picture using the files in the library without installing Aperture.

    Hi Refringgers,
Install the 30 day trial of Aperture. Open your Aperture Library, export the Masters and Versions.
Other than that I will make a strong recommendation not to muck within the Aperture library. Yes, you can find your photos in there, but if you ever decide to again use it may well be unable to be opened. The other thing is the photos are scattered around in a gazillion folders it would take a long time, of course depending on the number of photos, to retrieve them.
    Cordially,
    RicD

  • Iphoto to aperture import doubles image size?

    Hi All.
There is an option to either "keep the files in same place" or to "import to aperture folder" when I import my iPhoto Library.
If I select the latter as the video recommends does that mean I am doubling the amount of space on my HD my images are taking up?
    Thanks.

    Hi Jim.
Thanks. Can I please ask you to help me out a little more here?
I am a former PC user (somehow every time I say that I think I must qualify for a 12 step program somewhere). Anyway.
I am finding myself - pretty frequently - dragging images out of iPhoto and putting them on the desktop, and then sometimes uploading these to my Wordpress Blog or gathering them all up so I can see them in Cover Flow or Editing them in Photoshop which is in the XP side of my machine under Parallels (the version of Adobe Elements I have is like version 3 and does not work well...). Basically, I just can't seem to get around doing this.
When I upload to MobileMe or to Flickr I don't have to do this but other things I seem to do it pretty regularly for. This is a little messy but nothing compared to what it was like getting images out of my PC box and then into /some/ kind of order in iPhoto (which was really a nightmare).
Anyway, I am doing this again right now. I have to print up some 24 x 36 inch poster sized images of some of my work. I find the image in iPhoto, drag it to the desktop. Organize these into folders of varying size - and then open in Photoshop. If I find that this image for one reason or another has been reduced in size - and I know I must have a bigger image somewhere - I run a Spotlight search and it comes up as being in the iPhoto Library and I copy this out of the iPhoto Library, crop to fit and then upload to FTP.
I know this all sounds like a kludge and I would like to avoid creating problems for myself moving forward since the move to iPhoto was not so pretty.
Can I /please/ ask you to tell me what is involved in a referenced library and whether from what I am saying in the above this makes sense to you for me to do. I mean, you are saying that if I choose not to import into the Aperture Library then I will basically have a Referenced Library which references the data in the iPhoto Library?
    Is there a third option?
Is there a good way to pickup the photos that are now in my hard drive that are also in the iPhoto library? Is there a good reason to pick these up...
Anyway, hoping to do some recovery work over here...
    Thanks.

  • Importing jpg images saved in Photoshop into iPhoto'11 albums

I edited some photos in Photoshop, saved them as jpgs and then tried to import them into an iPhoto '11 album without success. Although I saw a green plus sign, the photos did not appear in the album. I have done this without a problem in an older version of iPhoto (7?) on an older computer. Why won't it work now and how do I get the edited photos into my album?
    Thanks.

You can't import to an Album. You import to the Library and then you add them to a Library. Check your Library those images will be there.

  • Aperture to [Original images | Lightroom]?

Just manged to delete the long version of this post so I'll keep it short:
    - Aperture doesn't support my cameras RAW files.
    - I have a copy of all my images in the filesystem external to Aperture's database. (my trust of db's not getting corrupt is low)
    - All my metadata is stored in Apertures database.
I need to be able to get my metadata out of the database and back into the orginal files.
Is there a script that can do this based on image name? I.e., take the metadata from IMG_23456 in aperture and stick it into the file named IMG_23456? Or that can stick it into lightroom, again keyed by image name (since lightroom can use the original files this would work as well.)
Or, failing that, is it feasable to export each album from aperture to disc and have it keep all the meta data? I could then replace the originals with the exported versions. (Though doing that by hand for several hundred albums won't be fun, and I'll have to make sure not to accidently chuck any of my video clips since I don't (and can't) have those in aperture.)
Any other ways people can think of to get the metadata out of aperture?
    Thanks for any help!

In the "folders" pane, right-click on the folder you see and select "show parent folder". Repeat as needed.

  • No audio for clips in my event library since upgrading to iLife '09

After upgrading to iLife '09, I noticed something odd in the new iMovie. All of my clips (recorded with a Sanyo Xacti HD1A and imported into the previous version of iPhoto DO show up in the event library, but DO NOT play any sound in the event library. If I copy a clip or move it up to the project editor the audio plays there. Does anyone know why I am getting no audio for these clips in the event library or what can be done to correct the issue?
    Thanks,
    -Mike

Finally got some sound on the clips in my iMovie '09 event library. This is what worked here: I went into the Pictures folder and showed the package contents of the "iPhoto Library". I went into the "Data" folder. I went to a "2008" folder. I located the folder of the first video clip I had for the holiday footage... "Dec 14, 2008". Inside that was a QuickTime file "SANY0001" and a JPEG "SANY0001.jpg". I zipped up the "Dec 14, 2008" folder. I dragged the folder to the trash. I dragged the .zip file out to the desktop.
I opened iPhoto '09. It showed an event for Dec 14, 2008 with a dashed-line round rectangle where it would have normally shown the first frame of the video clip. I closed iPhoto '09 and opened iMovie '09. It alerted me that it needed to generate a thumbnail for some video, and after about a minute the clip was in my event library and playing audio. Not only that... ALL clips in my event library now are playing audio. I quit iMovie '09 and went back into the "iPhoto Library". A new "Dec 14, 2008" folder was there with a new "SANY0001" QuickTime file (I wonder where it got this file from... hidden cache or backup somewhere?). I expanded the .zip on the desktop and dragged the original JPEG file from it to the new "Dec 14, 2008" folder.
I opened iPhoto '09 again. Now the thumbnail (obviously the JPEG file) displays fine.
Double checked iMovie '09... Yep, still playing the audio in ALL the clips in the event library.
I'm not really sure why this worked the way it did. The time it took to generate the new thumbnail was ONLY for the one clip... so it seems rather odd that all the subsequent clips in the event library started to work. Perhaps I just got lucky and it is only that first clip that was throwing everything else off in the thumbnails... or maybe iMovie just looks at the first clip in the event library to determine if it is playing sound or not for all of them?
Another oddity? The original SANY0001 file is "17.2 MB". The new one, which appears to be exactly the same in quality, is "10.8 MB". The "More Info" section reveals a bit more that might be of interest. The original is Codecs: Photo - JPEG, Integer (Big Endian). The new one is Codecs: Photo - JPEG, Integer (Little Endian). Total bit rate in the original is 2,570. In the new one it is 1,605.
Ah well. It works!!! Now I can finally have some fun exploring the new features of iMovie '09

  • "On My Mac" saved mail gone since upgrading to Mountain Lion

I upgraded my iMac from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion this past week. Mail worked fine for a few days and then my Mail Rules and my "On My Mac" saved mail (DECADES worth of mail!!!) disappeared.
I have both a Time Machine backup of my Snow Leopard from right before the upgrade, as well as a SuperDuper clone.
I have already tried the following:
Rebuilding the mailbox (it rebuilt my Inbox, but nothing showed up "On My Mac" and no, nothing is hidden.
Copying the Mail folder from my Snow Leopard backup to my Mountain Lion desktop and copying the .mbox files and associated .plist files for the "On My Mac" saved mail into the "Mailbox" folder in V2 on Mountain Lion. When I then launched Mail it showed "On My Mac" and the names of all of my saved mail folder, but those folders were empty. I attempted to rebuild those folders, but nothing showed up.
Importing the .mbox files from the "On My Mac" saved mail, but it only showed two Sent Items folders as being able to be imported. None of my actual "On My Mac" many saved mail folders.
I could really use some help here. I have already posted on Macintouch and nothing suggested has helped thus far.
I really cannot lose my saved mail. The contents of each of those .mbox saved mail folders absolutely contains my saved email. There are tons of "emlx" files.
    Thanks!

    Misery loves company. ;-)
Glad you found yours. What did you do to make it show up in Mail again?
I just got off the phone with Apple support and still have no resolution. I got kicked up one level and now that person has to kick it up again because they don't know how to fix my problem. I have been told it could be up to 48 hours until I hear from someone again. Ugh
Your mention of the "archive" folder sent me to look at my mailbox structure.
For some reason, I appear to have 2 mailboxes for my .Mac email (sorry - I still call it .Mac!). I don't know why, and each has 1GB of stuff in it. The first one has an archive.mbox with only a .plist in it. No folders. The other one has neither a .plist nor a folder. The other .mbox stuff has both a .plist and a folder with individual files (emails).
I really shouldn't have to revert to Snow Leopard to get my stuff back. There has got to be a way to have Mountain Lion Mail read my Saved Mail (On My Mac) folder. It's got 3GB of stuff in there.

  • IPhoto does not open library since upgrade to Yosemite

Upgraded to Yosemite 10.10. When iPhoto is opened, no library or screen appears and there are no contents in the toolbar items. I can locate the pictures in Finder but I want iPhoto to open directly. It appears that there are others that have had this problem.

Have you updated iPhoto to version 9.6? If not, then update. Only iPhoto 9.6 is full compatible with Yosemite.
If your versions already current, reinstall. Delete iPhoto from the Applications folder and download it again from the Purchased tab of the appStore.  It may not have downloaded correctly.

  • Downgrading from iTunes 8 to 7, despite adding playlists since upgrading

Anyone know how to do this?
Problem is, I've made many changes to the iTunes Library since upgrading from iTunes 7 to 8, and i don't wish to lose those changes.

I managed to save my playlist changes by following some of the advice in this thread meant for Windows: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1723649&tstart=0
Basically, I saved my *iTunes Music Library.xml* file and imported it after installing iTunes 7.7.1
Before reverting from iTunes 8.0.2 to 7.7.1, I deleted several files – many of which were possibly unnecessary. I should add I don't use iTunes for anything besides playing music – I have no iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, and I don't share my Library. My iTunes Library is located on my internal, startup disk.
    1. Backed up my entire startup disk, just in case.
    2. Quit iTunes 8, then quit iTunes Helper via the Activity Monitor.
    3. Uninstalled iTunes 8.0.2
    4. Temporarily removed any InputManagers I have, just in case. None of them are intended for iTunes or should affect it in any way – cool it Voodoo.
    5. Moved ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml to my desktop.
    6. Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist (I can't remember whether I got rid of the com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist and com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist)
    7. Deleted all files in the ~/Music/iTunes folder except the iTunes Music folder. This saved me a Gig's worth of album art too - iTunes 8 is a monster when it comes to storing its album art library.
    8. Deleted Library/Receipts/AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg, iTunesX.pkg and any other iTunes-related receipts I could find.
    9. Restarted my Mac in Safe Mode (hold down Shift key when hearing startup chime, let go once the spinning thingy appears).
    10. Installed iTunes 7.7.1
    11. Launched iTunes 7.7.1 while holding down the Shift key (or was it the Alt key?), then asked it to import the iTunes Music Library.xml file I'd moved to my desktop.
    12. Let it do its thing – this took quite a while.
    13. Quit iTunes, restarted my Mac in Safe Mode again (call me paranoid)
    14. Restarted my Mac normally and returned all InputManagers to their rightful place.
Presto! Back to all-round goodness – responsiveness is good again (commands such as clicking on a playlist, double-clicking on a song etc. now execute within 0-2 sec. instead of 5-10 sec.), full screen Cover Flow is back, iTunes takes less time to start up etc.
My playlists, star ratings, play count etc. were left intact.
A serious downside for me was that I lost my MP3s' EQ settings. My library still had all my custom EQ settings, but none were assigned to any of my music. This is taking me a week or two to redo.
Also, for some strange reason a few of my MP3s lost either their artist sort tags, album artist sort tags, artist tags or album artist tags. Btw, since before iTunes 8, I've converted all my ID3 tags to v2.4.
I marked this thread as unanswered, since my downgrade wasn't 100% successful. Maybe someone else has better advice for those who'd like to revert to iTunes sanity
