Aperture Import thumbnails not clear

I'm importing uncompressed raw from a Nikon D300 into Aperture 2.1 on a Mac Pro, Leopard. The thumbnail images prior to import are not clear and actually appear jagged if I view large. Images are fine after import. Was wondering if this is normal or if I need to correct something in my process. Thanks for any help.
Tom

Aperture generates the "real" high-quality thumbnails. Whatever's on the camera as thumbnails are grab-bag. Don't worry about it

  • Newly imported thumbnails not showing previews

Today when I was importing images off a memory card I noticed the thumbnails in library mode were not showing any previews, they were blank (gray) for only the recently imported items.  My other folders' thumbnails are showing previews with no issue.
I am working in Lightroom 4.  I am using Windows 8 on a HP laptop.
A couple of other notes about what I noticed...
    1.  In the import screen the thumbnails display the preview.
    2.  Once the import goes to the Library Mode - thumbnails are blank.  Can only see the image number and any symbols indicating tags or changes to the image.
    3.  Loupe view I cannot get an image to appear.
    4.  In the Develop Mode if I click on a thumbnail down in the filmstrip (which are all blank) an image will appear in the work area and the filmstrip thumbnail will display a preview of the one I selected.  The thumbnail preview will remain visible for a few moments after moving to a new image.  Then it just goes blank again.
    5.  I was importing jpegs and dngs.  Having the same problem with both of these today.
    6.  All the other thumbnails in folders that were in the catalog prior to today are visible and working normally.
I am wondering how to fix this problem of newly imported images not displaying an image in the thumbnail whether it is in Library Mode, Loupe View, or Develop mode.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

I'd delete the preview cache and rebuild - that may help (or it may not).
To do so, exit Lightroom, then delete .lrdata folder alongside .lrcat file.
PS - delete entire .lrdata folder, but do NOT delete .lrcat file or anything else.
(if it has 'Smart Previews' in the filename, don't delete it - just delete the other one).
Then, re-open Lightroom and rebuild previews using Library - Previews menu (optional, but probably worthwhile).
If no better, then you have an system/app problem as opposed to a preview-data problem.

  • Aperture import is not working

I just installed Lr 5.0 and upgraded to 5.7. I'm trying to import my Aperture library, but Lr does not recognize any photos that I have on my laptop. Using a MacBook Pro. I have no idea what to do. I'm so new to this, I don't even know what questions to ask. I just need help!

When you say it "doesn't recognize any photos", what do you mean?
I'll try to guess.  You probably cannot import because you're not using the Aperture plugin.  It could be you only have PNG files, or some other compatible format, but that's unlikely.
If you're importing your Aperture Library, you'll need to go to "File" "Plugins", "Import from Aperture", or something to that effect.  You find your Aperture library, and it begins the import process.
Depending on what you're trying to do, this could be a simple process, or one that requires pre-work and post-work on your part.  This guide is helpful:
    http://www.lightroomqueen.com/ready-move-aperture-iphoto/
Lightroom does not make file organization easy, and it does not mask file organization like Aperture.  You may want to look for other threads I've posted on how to relocate your masters in Aperture before importing to Lightroom.
Finally, most of the metadata will make it across.  Your masters should make it across.  Aperture image adjustments will not.  Lightroom supposedly copies "Aperture Previews", which is the image created by your adjustments.  But I've found it only copies about 1/3 of them.  The import process is one way, so you want to make sure you get it right the last time.
Highly recommend exporting a test Aperture library or using a small one to test with first.  I've run 15 tests so far and am still not happy with the results, given a few remaining bugs.  YMMV.

  • Aperture import does not see/recognize external drive

I've searched quite a bit for an answer to this and have come up empty, so I apologize in advance if I simply missed it.
I am having issues with Aperture not showing a couple external drives in the Import view.  It recognizes my iphones, ipad, SD cards, but not these three external SATA drives, which are formatted NTFS.  The OS sees them as they appear in Finder and I can browse them just fine.
    Any ideas?

I've been using this application without incident for
several weeks now; coming over or rather
transitioning from WIN7 and Lightroom to
MAC OS and Aperture; Aperture is the best DAM
I've seen but a little light as a raw image file processor
IMHO  (so far..that is..I have a whole two weeks of
working with A3 and nearly 5 years with LR)
Anyway's I'm referencing files on the TC and importing
into the Aperture library..there is simply no sign of the import
browser at the bottom of the import screen.. I wonder if the
10.7.1 LION update broke something as I did do that update a
few nites ago and have not tried any imports for a few days..
just noticed this today as the other poster evidently did..
I'm going to try a simple import from a USB thumb drive to see if that works..

  • Aperture import does not see files on hard drive

This happens again and again, and it's EXTREMELY irritating.
I am trying to import some existing JPEGs on my Desktop. When I try Import in Aperture, the file browser simply does not see most files and folders. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. It seems to happen on a whim. This is very bad, I have just about had it with Aperture. And yes, permissions are set correctly.
Can anyone figure out on what basis Aperture sees or does not see certain files/folders?

I am trying to import some existing JPEGs on my Desktop.
Do you mean your Desktop folder? And is the Desktop folder the only folder that is showing this behaviour?  I have never had problems to open images directly from the Desktop. Have the image files been dropped directly onto the the Desktop or into a subfolder of the Desktop?
Previous MacOS X versions had problems with a huge number of files on the Desktop because this folder has been treated in a special way.
Which version of Aperture and MacOS X are you using?
It might be a problem with permissions or file ownership.
If the problem with your Desktop folder persists you could try to reset the permissions, ownership, and access control lists on your Home folder as described in Linc Davis's post here:  Re: iPhoto returns OSStatus error -54
Have you by any chance encrypted your Home folder by File Vault?

  • Help Verify: Aperture 3 does not regenerate thumbnails at Import screen

Before I consider this to be a bug, can someone else help me verify that Aperture 3 will not regenerate thumbnails at the import screen? Basically, if you have the thumbnail slider middle-ish then slide toward larger thumbnails, Aperture just expands the existing thumbnail, resulting in pixellated thumbnails.
Surprising behavior, to say the least, especially since Lightroom has had this ability since 1.0 beta.

Sorry that was not helpful. I am using the trial version only and HELP states 'Aperture provides a few methods for reconstituting your Aperture library and the file relationships within it.'
To repair or rebuild your Aperture library : - following by empty white space.
Having looked through Aperture Commands under the Aperture Menu I cannot find any likely entry other than I have already mentioned.
    Good luck.

  • Can Aperture Import Expression Media Thumbnails?

I need a cataloging program for my 38,000 images that are currently in Expression Media Pro. Shortly after buying iView I got an upgrade which basically wrecked my catalog. The only help I was able to get was from a discussion group and Expression has a charge of 250.00 for support!! I would buy a new program for that kind of money. My catalog is still somewhat crippled and I am looking for a way out, but the thought of rescanning hundreds of CD's and DVD's gives me a serious headache. Can Aperture import the thumbnails and perhaps the keyworks and some other info? Can any program? I feel like it is only a matter of time when Expression Media stops working without another upgrade and I'm not going there.

It seems that subject is getting little attention here so I took it elsewhere. Take a look as there may be a solution.

Short Slo Mo video imported to Aperture or iPhoto via cable (Air Drop not supported on my iMac): only the SloMo section imports. Not the rest. Any fixes?

Okay, as I'm working through this I see that I have to add the "Admin" account to each file with "read only" permission.  Simply changing the "everyone" account access does nothing.
So how do I change the permissions settings in iPhoto or Aperture to give each exported file the desired permissions?  I cannot locate a setting in the iPhoto or Aperture applications.
Also, I added a password to the user account.  It did not change how files are output.

  • Aperture 3 does not recognize duplicates on Import

I was running an up to date version of Aperture 2 on all three of my machines. I upgraded the 17 MBP to Aperture 3. All updates applied, seems to function normally. I exported versions from an Aperture 2 machine in an attempt to consolidate my libraries. No file names had been changed. "Do not import duplicates" was selected. Aperture 3 wanted to import all files even though some were already present. I went back exported masters not versions, still saw all files being available for import.
Here is what the AP3 manual says:
"When you import images, Aperture automatically checks to see if any of the images are duplicates of previously imported images. Aperture checks the filename of the master to determine if an image is a duplicate of one in the library. Select the “Do not import duplicates” checkbox to prevent Aperture from importing duplicates. If this checkbox is unselected, Aperture imports all images, even if they are duplicates, and creates a new master with a different name for each duplicate. Aperture never overwrites or replaces a master that has already been imported."
So the question is, was the "filename" the same in AP2 and AP3. The Finder thinks that the picture file exported from AP2 is exactly the same as the picture file exported from AP3.
Therefore AP3 is not correctly identifying duplicates.

Is your Library on a FAT32 drive or network share?
It needs to be on an HFS+ drive, and should be locally mounted. Putting the library on a network is not a good idea, as the library needs lots of small block random read/write speed and doing this over TCPI/IP is slow.
However, you should be able to put the RAW referenced files on a network volume, and keep the library local.

  • Aperture 3 does not import video from iPhone

Aperture 3 does not want to import my videos from iPhone anymore. This used to work perfectly fine before, now Aperture hangs as soon as I try to upload any video.

I'm experiencing the similar but Aperture not importing photos from iPhone. When I go to iPhoto and import then it works. My software is all latest.

  • Import button not active on Aperture import tool

I have a rMBP 15" (early 2013) model, and I was trying to import Aperture library (about 300GB) to Lightroom using import tool.
However, as I try to Import, Number of Image/video files and Disk space required remained undetermined and Import button has not been active for two hours.
What can I do? Just wait?

I too have exactly the same problem (the "Import" button on the Lightroom plug-in to import from Aperture library is not available).
The import button on the Adobe plug-in tool to import from my Aperture library is not available.  It's greyed out.
I've tried the "repair permissions" option in Aperture ("Command+Options keys held while starting Aperture.app on my iMac).  Aperture appears to fix the file permissions successfully (no error messages). However, the Adobe Lightroom import tool still shows the "Import" button greyed out.
I've tried the "repair database" option in Aperture ("Command+Options keys held while starting Aperture.app on my iMac).  Aperture appears to fix the database successfully (no error messages).  However, Adobe Lightroom import tool still fails to show an active "Import" button (still greyed out).
Finally, I've tried the "rebuild database" option in Aperture ("Command+Options keys held while starting Aperture.app on my iMac).  Aperture appears to rebuild the database successfully (no error messages).  However, Adobe Lightroom import tool still fails to show an active "Import" button (still greyed out)
The vital statistics for my aperture file are:
      Version: Aperture Library 3.6
      Filename: Aperture Library.aplibrary
      Filesize: 136.08 GB
      # Projects: 403
      # Photos: 27,392
      Permissions:
        myself     Read + Write
        staff         Read
        everyone Read
This is very frustrating.  Did Adobe rush this import tool out too quickly without adequate testing?
Adobe, if you are listening please fix this issue with your Aperture import tool ASAP.  Otherwise, I and a lot more users will be asking for our money back on the Creative Cloud plan we selected and are now paying for on a monthly basis!

  • Aperture 3 does not detect duplicate files on import

On import, AP3 still shows the same files I'm importing from my compact flash card that have already been imported. Raw files are coming from a Nikon D70. This also happens when I try to import photos from an SDHC card coming off from a Canon HFS10 camcorder.
The check mark to "not import duplicate" is checked, yet imported files still show up. I had this same problem before with Aperture 2 and I had to revert back to an older version of CameraRaw -- I believe 2.2 -- to fix the problem.
    Need help please.
    Thanks.

  • Aperture import plug-in does not import the plug-in

I want to move from Aperture to LR
Using a recent MBP on Yosemite
    Just installed LR 5.6
    Downloaded the Aperture importer.lrplugin
This program opens LR as if I wanted to import photos
No way to download the Zip file.
    What am I missing?

The difficulty came from my bad interpretation that the file dowloaded was a program to download a Zip file while it was the Zip file itself. Problem solved.
I dont know if I can and how to delete this from the forum as it can only confuse the readers.

  • Aperture Imports Duplicates and Triplicates of Photos from my iPhone 6 Plus

When I import photos from my iPhone 6 Plus, Aperture imports duplicates and triplicates of the identical photo randomly.  This results in hours of going back through all of the Projects in Aperture and manually deleting the duplicates.
I thought that maybe I was mistaking standard and HDR versions of the same photo, or even burst shots that looked very similar, but this isn't the case.  It is the same file name followed by a (1), (2), and sometimes a (3).  I also know this isn't the case, because my Camera Roll has about 1,200 photos and videos on it (I stopped importing photos to my hard drive a while ago because of the duplicates, hoping an update would come out to fix the problem), but Aperture tells me that it is going to import over 4,000 photos from my iPhone 6 Plus, not the 1,200 that is on it.  This is because of a bug that is double and triple counting many of the photos and videos.
Interestingly enough, Image Capture recognizes only the 1,200 photos on the iPhone, but I'm reluctant to use it because it won't append the Metadata that I have preset in Aperture or automatically run the preset enhancements.  I also don't use Image Capture so I'm not sure if it might leave out any Metadata or have some other drawback that I'm not aware of.
So far I've don't he standard troubleshooting, have restarted my iMac and iPhone 6 Plus, ran repair permissions, waited for an update, etc. but I still have the same problem.
I've all but given up on Aperture and am waiting anxiously for the Apple to release the new Photos software, but I need to spend time to work around this bug before then.  I can't leave this many photos and videos on my iPhone and need to get them imported into Aperture.
Is there an obvious fix to this that I'm overlooking?

Interestingly enough, Image Capture recognizes only the 1,200 photos on the iPhone, but I'm reluctant to use it because it won't append the Metadata that I have preset in Aperture or automatically run the preset enhancements.  I also don't use Image Capture so I'm not sure if it might leave out any Metadata or have some other drawback that I'm not aware of.
If Image Capture imports correctly, use it to import to a folder and then import that folder to Aperture. You can use the same presets when importing from a folder as when importing from a camera of iPhone.
The same buggy behavior has been reported for iPhoto, since the iOS 8.1 release. It happens in iPhoto, Image Capture, Aperture, but not all are seeing this problem.
    For example, see these discussions:
iPhoto Yosemite duplicates Photos while importing from iPhone
iPhoto 9.6 shows duplicate photos present on iPhone
Connecting iPhone duplicates photos in iPhoto
duplicate photos in camera roll on iPhoto
Unfortunately, there is no clear picture yet, what circumstances will make it happen, and how to prevent it.
For some forum members it was the Photo Stream (Duplication upon importation from Iphone to Iphoto), others found it was caused by HDR photos, for some the problem went away after the 8.1.2 update, for others it started with this update.
A few forum members reported, that it helped to dismount the iPhone and plug it in again (iPhoto 9.6 shows duplicate photos present on iPhone), and then the duplicates went away. One member reported, that Apple Support claimed this problem to be caused by iCloud iPhoto libary (Beta), and indeed turning off iCloud iPhoto libary (Beta)  made he duplicates vanish for him.
