Aperture-iPhoto management ??

hello..
does anyone know how to sync the iphoto library to the aperture lib?
i've imported my iphoto library to aperture, now i want to know if it's possible that if i add a new pic to my iphoto library will it automatically add to the iphoto lib imported to my aperture!
thanks

You cannot sync the libraries. Well, maybe you could if you had a complicated AppleScript, but it's not default functionality.
You can use referenced masters in both products and have them share the same originals, or at least you could with iPhoto '06, not sure if it's as easy with the new iPhoto.

I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.
I can't access these images except to go into the applications.
Also, I'd like to import my iphoto library into aperture, and move aperture library to an external drive.  I tried the import first, but there wasn't enough space.  Then I tried copying over the aperture library onto the external drive but it failed bc it said file was in use.
As it is, I only have 50gb left on my imac, and the aperture library is 150gb.  Also, I have over 10k images in both libraries combined and there are tons of duplicates that need to be sorted, and hopefully not messed up because I've organized most of them.
So in short, I need to know how to do the following:
-select photos in finder in aperture/iphoto libraries
-move aperture library to live on external drive
-import iphoto library into aperture library
    -eliminate dups but maintain organization
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
    -live happily ever after
Thanks in advance for any support you can offer!!

If you're using apps like iPhoto or Aperture then they replace the Finder for managing your photos. The point is that you use the (many) options available via these apps for the things you want and need to do with the Photos.
So, simply, you don't select the photos in the Finder. I'll append the supported ways to do this - which are faster and will yield the current version of your Photos - to the end of this post.
-move aperture library to live on external drive
Managed or Referenced Library? Managed -
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit Aperture
    2. Copy the Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching Aperture. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Referenced -  relocate your Masters first.
These issues are covered in the Manual and on this forum hundreds of times.
-import iphoto library into aperture library
FIle -> Import -> iPhoto Library? Have you done this already? If so are you trying to move the Masters to Aperture from an  iPhoto Library? Or Consolidate them?
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
You can't. Every photo is in a Project.  They’re the basic building blocks of the Library.
You might want to spend a little time with the manual or the video tutorials. I'm not sure you've grasped the app  you've purchased.
The following is written for iPhoto, but about 97% works for Aperture too.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto/ APerture:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics. This is what you use to attach your shot to your GMail
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto/ Aperture.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto/ Aperture not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser

I reinstalled my system on a new hard drive, from time machine. However my old photos seem corrupt within aperture. iphoto seems okay. New photos take a long time to load as well.
    Have you heard of this?
    Thanks

We need a little more information to be able to help.
However my old photos seem corrupt within aperture.
What kind of corruption? And when do you see it? All your images, or only some? Are the images distorted, discolored, or not displayed at all?
Are you shooting in raw? Is your library referenced or managed? Is your library on your system volume or on an external harddrive?
And it would help to know your MacOS version and Aperture version too.

  • Aperture = iPhoto + Bridge Photo Downloader + Photoshop?

I am considering to use Aperture to streamline my workflow but I wonder about its file management capability. Let me explain the details:
I love iPhoto to browse, find and preview photos. It provides the most intuitive, easy and fast way for that. The interface is also nice. The photo-editing capability is negligible for me as I use Photoshop for this.
But I really hate the way it manages imported photos as Rolls and keep everything hidden under the 'Package'. So instead, I use Adobe's Bridge Photo Downloader from Photoshop to download photos from my cameras/iPhone and I set it to organize the files into folders: year/year-month/date-time of the photos taken. Then I'd import them to iPhoto - but without copying the originals. So basically I create a Reference Library for my iPhoto. I then tag/assigning Keywords the photos accordingly (I have plenty of keywords assigned). I sometimes create Events or Albums too - especially great for showing photos on my computer to friends and family.
Photoshop is set as the external app to edit photos so from iPhoto I can open the file in Photoshop (which I have been using for all my photo editing needs including RAW).
From what I gathered so far, Aperture seems to be a more efficient alternative to process RAW photos, and I've been wanting to find an alternative to the iPhoto-Bridge-Photoshop method above. Basically I need a Photo App that can do all the following:
    1. Import original photos from cameras/iPhone and then automatically organize them chronologically (in folders of year/year-month/date-time of the photo taken) a la Bridge's Photo Downloader
    2. Tag/Keywords, create Events and Albums, and to Preview photos quickly a la iPhoto
    3. Edit RAW files without harming the original files a la Photoshop
I wonder whether Aperture is suitable for the usage I described above?
Thanks in advance for any inputs!

    Hi freefire,
So Aperture can import photosfrom cameras/iPhone and automatically organize, rename and save them into folders outside of Aperture Library?
You can rename files on each import. However, saving files is not Aperture's job. If you put the files wherever you want, and then import them into Aperture as referenced images, they stay where they are.
Alternately, and this would be much more tedious, you could import them all into Aperture as managed photos, and then use Aperture to "relocate masters" to somewhere else. That's sort of like two steps where one (my first paragraph) would suffice.
If you want to organize photos by year, that is the job of Aperture. However, that is the job of Aperture *within the confines of Aperture*. Aperture is built primary to help you organize your photos within its database. You can make smart albums to show you every photo from 2010, for instance. That smart album is meaningless in Finder because it is not a primary function of Aperture to help you organize outside of Aperture. Basically, if you want to use Aperture to make directory structures for Finder, you aren't using Aperture in the most effective way.
When I edit a RAW file in Photoshop, Photoshop keeps the new setting within the RAW file itself without creating new file and I can go back and make further changes or revert back to original state - all in the file itself.
Are you sure about that? I thought Photoshop used the sidecar XMP files for that sort of thing. I'm no expert, but there's generally no provision in the file formats (including RAW files) for "this is how you undo something." I don't use Photoshop like that, but it sounds fishy that Photoshop will choose to write new data to a RAW file, as RAW files are proprietary and will never be produced by anything but a camera. It sounds doubly fishy that it will also write *undo data* to a RAW file. Again, I'm no expert at Photoshop, but I am an expert at software engineering, and it sounds pretty strange and error-prone.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3359633
Now, when I do that with Aperture, will Aperture then make a new copy of the RAW file to be kept in Aperture Library?
Aperture will not make a new copy of a master (RAW or not) unless you explicitly duplicate it (and that is not what you are asking about). Aperture, being a Digital Asset Manager, will never modify your masters. (Except if you change the date/time and choose to modify the master.) This is unlike photo editors like Photoshop, which may manipulate their input files and save those changes to the same files. Aperture makes a version, which is a recipe for changing the appearance of your master.

  • Aperture, iPhoto, PS Elements, Adobe Bridge, etc, etc Which combination?

I have the software programs mentioned in the subject line and am somewhat confused as to which ones I should be using. I have a Nikon D300 and am just starting to spend more time with my photo hobby (recently retired). I'm also interested in doing some HDR photography/editing. As far as organizing my photos, I could use iPhoto, Aperture, or Bridge. In editing my photos I could use iPhoto, Aperture, or PS Elements. I'm wondering which would be better to use. It could be that Aperture is not really a program I need since it is unlikely I'd be comparing similar photos on the light table very often.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to which programs I should use together. I'm assuming that PS Elements would be the strongest editing program but I'm not sure where Aperture would fit in in my work flow. Are there advantages to using Bridge as opposed to Aperture for organizing?
My guess is that there are many varying opinions on this. I'd welcome any that would seeem to make sense in my situation.

IMO Aperture for management and minor editing, PSE or PS for any editing that Aperture cannot provide. In an earlier post I analyzed thusly:
    Group A
Aperture is Apple's pro app for RAW images capture management. Lightroom is Adobe's pro app for RAW images capture management. iPhoto is Apple's free entry-level app for images capture management.
    Group B
Inexpensive Adobe Photoshop Elements is for basic to intermediate image editing, adequate for most photogs. Very expensive full Adobe Photoshop is for pro graphics work and very advanced image editing.
Two apps are needed. Digital photographers ideally should own and learn reasonable competence with one app from each of groups A & B above. Note that Aperture and PSE are in different groups.
IMO the evolution of a digital photog is to start with iPhoto and quickly outgrow it. After that I recommend that the next step is to own both Aperture and PSE.
If one advances to the point of doing really advanced graphics work the upgrade from PSE to full Photoshop is easy enough, just expensive and with very substantial additional learning curve. I use the full Design Premium Creative Suite, and the upgrade to CS4 from CS3 is so expensive I am staying with CS3.
Bridge is Adobe's pro app that comes with full Photoshop and manages files handling within the Creative Suite. I do not include it in Group A above because it is far inferior to Aperture and Lightroom for digital photographers and managing DSLR image capture.
Bridge is a file-management app, not a database. The folks who like Bridge are usually very experienced Photoshop graphics folks (often coming from a long history with film scans, which involves totally different workflow than modern DSLR capture) rather than primarily digital photogs.
Note that PSE should not be used for RAW image conversion because the RAW conversion engine in PSE is a compromised version of ACR, not the complete version of ACR found in full (very expensive) Photoshop. Use Aperture or Nikon software for RAW conversion prior to PSE edits if PSE edits are necessary. In my case for 98% of pix Aperture does it all, no external editor required.

  • Sync BOTH Aperture & iPhoto library

    Hello!
Is there a way to sync both Aperture & iPhoto library onto an iDevice? I know that I can import the iPhoto library to Aperture but this does not solve my problem.
I update both libraries separately as I use Aperture for RAW images which were taken with a DSLR and iPhoto for other image files from point-and-shoot cameras or mobile devices.
If I import iPhoto into Aperture and then later update the iPhoto library then the new images do not show up in Aperture or my iDevice.
    Thank you.

I'm using they both to get more free space.
Using two libraries in different applications to manage the same data does not get you "more free space". Precisely the opposite, in fact.
Unless you have a specific need for using iPhoto as well as Aperture, you should simply elect to use one and forget about the other. Pick one horse and ride it.

  • Aperture iPhoto Import

I imported my iPhoto library into a trial version of Aperture (Aperture will manage the directory).  iPhoto manages the photos by putting them in by year in the "Masters" directory, then by event name.  I noticed that the Aperture iPhoto import placed all my photos into 2011 directory instead of the same file structure in iPhoto.  Is there a way to get Aperture to manage my imported photos and place the photos in a file stucture by year?
I do not intend to monkey around with the iphoto or aperture library's, but I do want the photos stored in a fasion that I could move on to some other program if needed in the future.
    Thanks Gary

None taken, I am just one of those that want to know how Aperture is handling my photos.  My search in the manual and in this forum did not help entirely, until now. You are right it does not matter how Aperture handles the bundle as long as you want to continue to use Aperture.  I thought it was strange that iPhoto handles it one way and Aperture handles it another. I like the way iPhoto places my photos in by year.  It appears that Aperture will also do this but only for my pictures this day forward.  My concern is for the future, and for something that may never happen, but I plan for it anyway.  If I decide to make another change in the future, I would want to make sure at least the pictures are structured by year.  I should be able to go into the Aperture bundle and copy the masters out if needed.  I was hoping I could get the imported photos structure by year.  I do like Aperture so far and will more than likely make the purchase.

  • Dark photos from Aperture, iPhoto or Drag and drop

All imported photos (from aperture, iphoto or drag&droped) whitin a project are very dark in the viewer, and in the final video (itunes, export with several options...). The histogram levels of the image are low. The preview image in the project looks fine.
I tried repair permissions with disk Utility, system clean with Onyx... the problem remains.
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem, but only after I installed the iMovie 9.0.1 update. Before then my still images looked fine when imported.
But now, my pictures are coming up so dark as to be unusable. I was forced to export them as slideshow movies from iPhoto and import them as clips to iMovie last time I tried to use still images.

  • Aperture/iPhoto support

Any ideas on when Aperture/iPhoto will have raw support fo Sony A7II ?

Since iPhoto and Aperture are now dead, there is going to be no reason for Apple to upgrade RAW Support under OS X for the pro cameras any longer because no one with a pro camera is going to use that toy they are calling Photos in the future.

  • After installing aperture, iPhoto won't open

After installing Aperture, iPhoto says it needs to be updated to open. When I run the updater, it says everything is up to date. Suggestons? thanks, Kevin

Did iPhoto come preinstalled on your Mac? Then you need to upgrade it from the AppStore, not from the Update menu.

  • Lost iphoto manager

I don't understand what has happened but about 9 months I downloaded iphoto manager, paid for it, but now it has disappeared.  Any idea how to get it back?  Or I am sure that there is a record of me paying for this, so where do I look for that?
Sorry for such a trivial question.

I would contact the folks that sold it to you - I assume you mean the iPhoto Library manager.

OK, fixed it.  Found that iPhoto is now BACK in the App store.
Found iPhoto app in Finder and dragged it to Trash.
Downloaded iPhoto from App store and all now back working again.
Didnt expect to find iPhoto in App store as last time I looked it wasn't available.

  • IPhoto Manager merge causes MacPro to freeze

    Hi
In trying to combine all my iPhotos from multiple mac computers onto one external hard drive, I found online forum suggestion to try iPhoto manager.
Though the interface looks great and seems to work at the outset, my Mac Pro keeps freezing in the middle of the merge process.
I've tried a number of times, creating new libraries, using old libraires.
It always loads correctly in "preview", and once I hit merge it seems to be working fine.  But after awhile the system freezes up, I have to reboot and start again.  There are a lot of photos and I presume it's going to take many hours to complete.  But it never gets there.
Maybe I should merge all these different iphoto libraries using a different program or technique.  Other than the image number/name, any geotag, and date, I haven't gone through to create anything else, so not sure what metadata I really need to preserve.
    Appreciate any suggestions
    Thanks

  • Iphoto Manager is not legitimate is it?

I have 10.6.8 mac mini I also have iphoto 11. I am also dyslexic I think I have failed to fully comprehend the most advisable way to use iphoto maybe I have insdvertantly made duplicate copies of libraries. I have not done any thing in camera raw. In order to straighten things out I have tried to use iphoto manager which I am unable to trust.  I have been told to update my licence at least three times and even when I have paid I am told that I am not intitled to use the shortcuts, I have come to the conclusion that this software is a hoax. It looks like others have used the a version of photo manager as well although the last comment on this issue was last posted in 2013. What does everyone know that I don't know I am so confused I do not know what to do. I've just read the instructions to clear Hacked software as much as I would like to erase Iphoto Manager I feel it could have whined itself around vital parts of my computer. I really thought that photo manager was an apple software. I do not see anyhing to clarify the purpose or positive outcome using iphoto manager.  I would love to hear from old toad on this I really appreciated his help before.

Like you've already been told iPLM is the most used and respected utility for iPhoto on the market.  In my opinion it's a must have app if you're an iPhoto user.
Where did you you purchase it from?  If it wasn't from this website,  iPhoto Library Manager, you may have downloaded a hacked version of it.  I've had iPLM for several years now and haven't been asked to purchase  a new license for it.  If for some reason you clean files from your Home library the license info file might have been removed and you would need to add the license number again in iPLM's iPhoto Library Manager ➙ Registration menu window.
You should contact iPLM the Help menu
Let them know where you purchased the app from and, if you have copies of any emails regarding the purchase and subsequent requests for additional licenses, offer to send copies of them to iPLM for their review and consideration.
