Aperture is destroying my library and wrecking my photos

I just rebuilt my library and still:
the thumbnail visuals in preview aren't the same visual once you click on them and see them in preview (they are an altogether different visual (from the same project but all the same completely different)). and when I export the visual that I've clicked in thumbnail, the visual that is exported is the one that I see in preview. not the visual that I see as a thumbnail. so I have no idea what has happened to my shots and what is missing.
various shots that I exported as part of a project so I could give them to apple's developers are now showing up as not being linked to their masters. and what's really weird is that not all the visuals are showing up as unlinked. only some. and when I try to relink aperture says that the shots cannot be found.
finally, some of my shots have have gotten randomnly squished (apertures has taken verticals and turned them into extreme horizontals and vice versa).
I have sent the last two problems on to apple's developers but I haven't heard anything back after a flurry of activity. now nothing.
and now I just ran into this new problem.
am just about to give up on this application after being very excited about it originally. right now it seems to be the absolute worst application in the world.
iphoto for all it's issues never did this to me.
any ideas?

Back up your Aperture Library as a precaution then try the following:
Go to your Pictures folder and find the Aperture Library there
Right Click on it and go Show Package Contents
Find the affected project - something.approject - and rightr click on it. Inside the project you'll find three files:
AP.Minis
AP.Thumbnails
AP.Tinies
Trash the three. Restart Aperture and that will force it to regenerate the thumbnails.

  • Lost the iphoto library and all the photos

I have recently installed some updates and upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1.  When I opened up Iphoto today there was no library and therefore no photos. I've searched the whole computer and can't find any jpegs so the library hasn't been moved.
I have been using the Time Machine with an external hard drive but today when I plugged in the drive to try to restore iphoto from my back up, the drive won't show, it's not recognised.
Has anybody got any ideas on what I can do to find my photos?

Restart your system and try again
This is not an iphoto issue - it is either  a TM issue or an issue with you computer - maybe something here will help - https://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/ - or here - http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

  • I went into the original files in the iphoto library and organised the photos there, now when I try to look at the photos in iphoto the tiles are there but when I try to enlarge or put into a slide show a big grey explanation mark occurs?

I tried to organise my iphoto originals to it would be easier to back them up onto my hard drive, so I renamed them and grouped them in the orinigal file. Now when I go onto iphoto to view the photos in a slide show a big exclamation mark comes up and if I click on the photo to see the original file it can't find it. Any ideas?

You won't be able to run the rebuild function and restore your library becaue you renamed and regrouped your original photos from the Finder.  I doubt if you can change the names back to their original names and put them back in the folders they were in originally so your only option is get your backup library and replace the one you damaged.
If you don't have a backup copy of the library from just before the problem that contains all of your photos you will need to start over from scratch as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
In the future stay out of the iPhoto Library package and only access the photos using iPhoto.

  • Checking for duplicates in my library and an external photo collection?

    Hi
So I have imported a large amount of my photo collection into Aperture however due to my filing system on my mac being really bad I have ended up with a large folder full of sub folders and lots of photos. Some of the photos in this folder have already been imported but others have not. Is there any simple way of importing only non-duplicate images so I can just delete the messy folder? I'd really rather not go through manually.
    Thanks

As long as the imported image files have not been renamed on import, Aperture should recognise, when you are trying to import a photo, that alrady has been imported and not import it again. Just make sure, the option"Do not import duplicates" is active in the Import settings panel.

  • Library and Develop Module Photos Appear Different

I am using Lightroom 4.4   Dell Ultrasharp monitor is calibrated.  I own and have been referring to Scott Kelby's Lightroom4 book for digital photographers.  I recently took some photos of my daughters prom.  She had on a beautiful reddish orange dress.  I notice that the dress appears very red in the develop module, however, appears a bit more orange in the library module.  The change is very noticeable between the modules.  The dress also appears similar to the library module view (a bit more orange) when viewed on the web via Flickr utilizing Chrome, Firefox, or IPad.  It also appears the same when exported to a JPEG file.
I have done some experimenting and have determined that this color change effect appears to be very noticeable utilizing the Adobe Standard Camera Calibration Profile.  It does not happen (at least to a noticeable extent) with the others such as Camera Standard where the dress appears a bit more orange in both the library and develop module.  I do, however, like the appearance of the Adobe Standard profile better and this happens to be the default profile as well.
I have also noticed that the dress looks more orange when Soft Proofing is enabled.  The change happens immediately when the check box is enabled.  Checking the box makes the photo appear similar to the Library module view.  Enabling Soft Proofing does make noticeable that there is Destination Gamut Warning which mainly involves the dress which is the point of interest, however, there is no warning with the Monitor Gamut Warning.  I am intending to place the photos on the web at this time via Flickr.  I will be printing several later so will be worrying about the printer gamut at that time.  But for now, I would like to get the photos on the web looking as intended.
Having the photos look so different in the Library and Develop Modules is very frustrating.  I am hoping that there is a simple setting or fix for this problem that I am experiencing.  Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Victoria. Thanks for your reply. Re the saturation of the yellows, an example of a photo which shows the behaviour is that of a sunflower shot in direct sunlight. So a typical bright yellow. The raw files are from a D7000, so I have several "camera" profiles to choose from in LR4, in addition to the default Adobe Standard. None of the camera profiles show a difference between Library & Develop. Also, the Adobe Standard profile only shows the described behaviour when yellows are present. I can find plenty of examples where the photos are identical between the two modules when there are no yellows in the shot. I doubt this is a monitor profiling problem, given that it affects just the Adobe Standard profile, however I will try re-profiling. My U2412M display is not wide gamut. I posted here because the issue I am seeing sounds very similar to the original poster's. We're both using Dell Ultrasharp displays, although that could be a coincidence. I'll see if I can get some screen grabs from my Mac and upload here later today. I'm on my Windows 7 laptop at the moment.

    Update:
I have a pair of screen grab JPEGs from the Mac which I'm happy to share, however the upload here in the forum is limited in size. Any suggestions how I can best share the full size JPEGs?
Re-profiling hasn't changed anything. I'm pretty sure my profile is good. Ambient natural lighting, monitor warmed up, etc. Native white point used as always. The difference between profiled and unprofiled is very subtle. The U2412M appears to be pretty accurate at factory settings.
If I turn soft proofing on in Develop I see the less saturated image which matches Library. Turning it off again and the differences return.
LR4 on my Windows 7 laptop doesn't have the same problem. The screen on that is calibrated with the same Spyder3, however the laptop's screen is of a mediocre quality compared to the U2412M.
Found another thread where the poster is having the same problems with yellows, this time in LR5.

  • I have deleted the iphoto library and lost my photo's......

i have deleted the iphoto library and cleared my trash and now all my photo's are gone. I have bought software to retrieve deleted data but not sure what file I am looking for. Can anybody help?

best solution is to restore yoru backup form before you made this error - that is the reason you must always have a good backup
If you don't you should start backing up immediately
to use the photos you recovered you look for photos (typically they have a .jpg or .jpeg extention to the name - and select the largest version  of each photo and import it into iPhoto
Note that for not much more that the cost of the data recovery software you could have had an extrnal hard drive and been running TimeMachine so none of this would be required

  • Deleted iPhoto library and folders containing photos but hard drive still show 32GB of photos?

I have a new MacBook Pro Retina.  Was having all sorts of problems setting up with Time Machine/Time Capsule back-ups.  To cut a long story short I moved to trash a whole lot of photos I had imported, including the iphoto library. Have emptied trash - normal and within both iphoto and aperture - but About this Mac is still showing 32GB of photos.  Where are they? And if I wanted to reconnect them to iphoto, how do I do that?

Open a Finder Window and go to your Username then to the Pictures folder. In there you will find a file, actually a folder but I won't get into that, called "iPhoto Library.photolibrary". It is that files (Folder listed as a Package) you need to Copy to your external drive.

  • Migrating older iPhoto library and losing latest photos

So i bought a new iMac (lion) and upon set up transferred my previous backup of my files (via the external hard drive i used for Time Machine) from our Macbook (OS X 10.5) and everything went fine - all the previous iPhoto pics were there.  Then i wanted to add additional pics from previous time machine backups(since the laptop didn't have a huge HD, we had to backup photos on Time Machine and then delete them from the current hard drive in order to not run out of disk space on the Macbook) in order to have ALL of my photos on the new hard drive.  Well when i did this, the original pics i had from the most recent backup disappeared.  And now all i have is a small subset of photos.  When i try to import the photos via iPhoto, the iPhoto and library icons on the external drive are shaded so i can't click on them.  Help!! I figured starting fresh and restoring the factory settings would be the easiest though when i hit the command R keys at boot nothing happens.  How do I restore my iMac to the most previous backup of the Macbook (or restore to factory settings and start over with migrating my data), plus add the previous iPhoto libraries from various time machine backups from the Macbook to my new iMac when I can't click on the iPhoto library?

what do you mean it will be deleted from Time Machine?
I'm not sure how else to parse those words.
Time machine is a back up tool. It keeps a rolling back up of whatever data set you tell it to back up. However, once it reaches the limit of the disk it is on, it will delete data from the back up if it has been deleted from the data set. In other words, over time, you lose the ability to roll back to a specific date. How far back you can go will depend entirely on the size of the disk you use for storing your Time Machine back up.
An archival app does not roll. It keeps the data regardless of whether it's deleted from the Data set or not.
Of course i also saved all the photos to DVDs incase (but they won't have the correct time stamp on them - thus when i try to categorize them in iPhotos it will be a mess).
It won't be unless you also stripped the Exif data from them. iPhoto gets the date and time from the Exif.
To choose which Library to open:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

  • Problem with library and vault

I would like to know how to take all photos out of Aperture and start over.
When I upgraded to V.3, I think I set things up incorrectly. I had a vault but now there is no vault and I now have folders that appear under Projects & Albums that indicate Aperture Vault, Aperture Vault (1) and Aperture Vault (2). I did not make these folders. There are duplicates of photos in "Aperture Vault and Aperture Vault (1)" folders. I had used an external drive for the vault with V2 and now there is a Aperture Vault on the external drive and also on the internal drive and also an Aperture Library on both the internal and external drives. In the Vault and Vault (1) folders there are folders with the same names but different numbers of photos in the projects. I just would really like to start over and import my photos again; I don't really care about adjustments at this point, only the masters.
    Vault
    Vault(1)

    Linda,
You did not post the entire screenshot of your Library Inspector, but I suspect I know what's going on.  Is the "Vault" a blue folder, as well as the "Vault(1)"?
I also have a top-level folder called "SimpleDrive Vault", which was the name of an Aperture 2 vault which I had to restore. (I had the unfortunately coincidence of a hard drive going bad the day I was intended to install Aperture 3.  I got a new hard drive, installed Ap 3, and then restored the Ap 2 library to start.)  When restoring your vault, Aperture may just create a new top-level folder with your vault name underneath it.  There is nothing wrong with it.  It is not your vault.  It is a folder with your vault name.  You can choose to restructure everything (I.e., drag and drop stuff wherever you want), although you may have duplicates.
I imagine that the duplicates are part of the problem you are trying to solve.  However, there is no way around it.  To "start over", as you asked, you will necessary have to send every photo outside of Aperture, duplicates included, and them import them.  I.e., you will have duplicates no matter what.
To answer your question specifically, the best way to "start over" in your case is probably to "relocate Masters" for every photo in your library to a location of your choosing, trash your library (which would then contain only your project structure, and not any photos), and then create a new library and reimport your photos.  Keep in mind what I stated above, though.  You will just end up with a new library with the same structure as the old library.

  • Ihave 51 iphoto library and they keep increasing and i do not know why

My iphoto has 51 libraries and they keep increasing and i do not know why, i would like only one iphoto library and consolidate all photos in that.

If you're using an IMAP account, also check your other devices to be sure you don't have some filters or rules set up that either delete or move emails to subfolders. You can see all Emails on your iPad, but displaying the sidebar showing Mailboxes, tapping the email account you are having trouble with (NOT the Inbox, but the section below), then tapping All Mail or something similar depending on your provider.
If the mails are there, they are somehow being moved by one of your mail clients or by a rule you set up with your provider.

  • Photo library and iphone pictures

    I have an Iphone 3gs.
    The problem is in Photos.
I should be showing the following
    Camera roll
    Photo stream
    Iphone Pictures
    And I am
    But I am also showing
    Photo Library
Which is a Duplicate of Iphone Pictures
When I go into Itunes to the "select photos from" menu and pick "Iphone Pictures",
Itunes will duplicate the Iphone Pictures album with one called "Photo Library".
When I look on my PC I find Iphone Pictures but do not find "Photo Library".
When I move the Iphone Pictures album to a different directory and replace it with a new
one, the Photo library goes away. Then I try to copy and paste the photos to the new
"Iphone  Pictures" folder and resync. The Photo Library comes back as a duplicate again.
    This is frustrating.
    Please Help

This is the way Apple handles photos on the iphone.  it is normal and is correct.
Just as a book can be in the library and in the fiction section, a pic can be accessed from the folder you sync and the photo library.  There are noe two copies, simply two places from which to access the same photo.
If you add several folders/albums, then all pics can be accessed from photo library, and the same photos can be accessed from their respective folders.

  • Recently I went to my iphoto library and noticed that some of my albums of photos were missing. Any help appreciated, Recently I went to my iphoto library and noticed that some of my albums of photos were missing. Any help appreciated

Recently I visited my iphoto library and noticed that photos were missing and several Albums. Any advice would be appreciated.
I'm running OS 10.6.7 on a Mac Book Pro

What version of iPhoto are you running?  Any other items missing from the library?
You can try the following (assuming iPhoto 11): make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
      Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
    Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I wanted to put my photos from my iphone to itunes and realized my photo stream wasn't turned on nor was icloud on my cpu.  So after fixing that, i still can not view any pictures on my itunes that are from my iphone.

Not only that but now that photo stream is turned on, it shows 3 photo stream albums, 1 called my photo stream that i made from my cpu,1 photo library, and 1 called photo stream.  when i turn it off, it just deletes the photo stream album and leaves the others.  what do i need to do to do this right?  i just want what's necessary and to be able to view my photos on itunes or wherever it's suppose to be because i have way too many photos on my phone that i want to take off.

Photostream will only work with photos newly taken on your iPhone.   It will not work with photos already on your iPhone.  The idea of Photostream is to allow you to take a photo(s) on your iPhone and a copy will be extended to the Photostream album on the iphone as well as other devices(with Photostream turned on) and your PC (with icloud control panel installed and photostream turned on) so that you can copy those files into your local folder.
If you want to transfer old photos from your iPhone, connect it to your PC and there will be an AUTOPLAY popup window for you to select to import pictures to your local folder.
If the Autoplay window dose not showup, you can go to windows explorer to look for your iPhone and right click to select import pictures:
