Aperture Library and Spotlight

Should Spotlight be turned off on a hard drive that only has an Aperture library? Can Spotlight search within an Aperture Library?

No reason to turn Spotlight off, no.
Not 100% sure that Spotlight will search within the Aperture library. Note, though, that if it did it would pick up the RAW file information, and not the information in the Aperture database as Spotlight doesn't search the database (which is binary) itself.
I tried it with metadata keywords and got no Spotlight hits. So I tried the same thing with Lightroom and saved it to XMP metadata and also got nothing.
Now, when I exported a JPEG containing my keywords from both Aperture and Lightroom, the keyword search works... Spotlight picks that up lickety split.

  • Show Aperture library and MULTIPLE aperture 3.0 libraries

In iPhoto'09 it is possible to File -> Show Aperture library. This seems to open the library most recently opened in Aperture 3.0. Is it possible to use "Show Aperture Library" and open a different library, if you have MULTIPLE aperture 3.0 libraries? If so, how? Thanks.

Thanks. I was afraid I might not be able to easily change this, but...
Which preference file are you referring to? I have several Macs on a home network with a NAS. What I am really trying to do is let other Macs on the network use their versions of iPhoto to browse an exported portion of my Aperture Library.
I am wondering... I can easily place an export of part of my Aperture 3 Library on the NAS. If I open that NAS Library in Aperture briefly to write the preference file. Then copy the path and preference file to the other Macs, before reverting Aperture back to its normal local Library (which is what I use). Would this:
    1. Allow the other Macs on the network to find and browse the NAS Aperture Library Export?
    2. Cause the non-Aperture Macs any problems. (They couldn't overwrite the Aperture preference file, as they do not have Aperture.)
    3. Any other issues?
    Thanks for your help.

    You are welcome.
    convert and store externally?
What versions of iPhoto and Aperture is your wife using? With both iPhoto 9.3 or later and Aperture 3.3 or later she simply could open her iPhoto library in Aperture and be done, since these versions are using a unified library format.

  • Aperture library and photos folder

    Hi.
I have a file '' aperture library'' that is 40gb on my mac's hdd and a folder named my photos on an external hdd that is 80 gb.
Is it possible to move them all to one place to organise them better without losing my photos.
I have already organized with projects and i need to free space on my mac .
    thank you

I have a file '' aperture library'' that is 40gb on my mac's hdd and a folder named my photos on an external hdd that is 80 gb.
Are your Aperture library and the folder "My Photos" on your external HD related in some way? Does this folder contain referenced originals, or are this photos that are not in your Aperture library?
You can simply drag your aperture library to an external drive, when you want it somewhere else.  And if your folder "Photos" has nothing to do with Aperture, you can  drag it in the Finder somewhere else as well. But id the folder "Photos" contains original image files that Aperture references, you need to use Aperture's "Relocate original" command to move the image files to a different place.

  • Aperture Library and Time Machine back up

I just did my first Time Machine back-up on an external HD, currently have no more space on my Mac's HD.
Can I delete all of my Aperture Library to make room for new projects and rest assured that these are backed-up on my external HD?

To use your Time Machine backup with aperture, you need to restore the Aperture library from Time Machine.
A Time Machine backup is a great backup scheme and allows you to recover your files, if need be,  but it is not an archive, that you can use instead of the backed-up files.

Move your Aperture library to a second drive, before you delete the library from your Mac's HD. Otherwise you will not be able to useit with Aperture. Make sure the drive you use for your Aperture library and and other media is formatted for Mac, see this link:  Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
And include the new drive into your Time Machine backup, so it will be backed up as well.

  • How to find aperture library and copy to dvd...

Hi,  I know this is very basic but can someone tell me how to find my aperture library and what I do to copy it correctly onto a DVD?  Then I have to install it on my desktop.  All this is because I took over 1000 pictures at the coast recently and I need to transfer them to my desktop and would like to keep the changes I made...  I would really appreciate anyone's help tonight if possible...  thank you SO much in advance if you can help...

I didn't hear back from anyone but looked back at some other discussions and figured it out.  All worked smoothly but I upload to zenfolio and now there is a problem with that.  I don't think it has anything to do with apple...  must be zenfolio's issue.

  • How can I delete my Aperture library and import into iPhoto?

I have decided that I prefer the simpler interface of iPhoto, and I'd like to move all my photos back to there. I'm aware of the new feature that allows iPhoto to open up Aperture libraries; however, I want to delete the Aperture library and import all the photos into iPhoto. What's the simplest way to accomplish this?

The Library file format is now the same.  If you have upgraded to the most current versions, you do not have to do anything to your Library: you can open it with either iPhoto or Aperture.  Since you prefer iPhoto, simply open your Library in iPhoto.
As others have suggested, you might as well keep Aperture (the program) around, in case there is an adjustment or other function that you can effect with it that you cannot with iPhoto.

  • Aperture Library and iLife Media Browser - Showing Deleted MobileMe Gallery

I'm currently using Aperture 3.1 and iLife '09 and just noticed that when I try to access the Aperture Library from say iPhoto or Keynote that the list of folders contains two MobileMe folders with my name, one of which contains dupicates of two of my gallery's. Now I deleted all of my MobileMe gallery's to see if I could fix this, but it still shows a MobileMe folder and two gallery's that no longer exist. I even logged out of MobileMe in Aperture, but still in the iLife Media browser the non-existent gallery's are still shown. I even tried deleting all previews and re-generating in Aperture, to see if the sharing information would be updated, but still these phantom gallery's persist. I guess this doesn't cause me any problems, but I would just like to fix it and wondered if anyone else had seen this and knew of a solution? Thanks.

    Hi,
I have a similar problem and have posted about it on this thread:

  • Master files consolidated into Aperture library and now lost...

Aperture 3.1 appears to be doing strange things with a few of my master RAW files stored in the Aperture Library. I consolidated several files (as a copy) into the library and the files showed that they were non-referenced for several months but now I get the yellow triangle and "Referenced File" arrow on the file metadata.
    Any ideas Aperture folks?

I havent found an easier way. It happened to me once, and i just deleted all of the songs out of iTunes, but not out of my hard drive. then i replaced them all in the library. It took like 12 hours cuz i have 15 GB worth, but at least i didnt have any more doubles

  • Aperture Library and Vault: Why the difference in size?

My Aperture Library is 226 GB and the Vault that's supposedly backing it up is only 144 GB?
I recently upgrade from a G5 to a new Mac Pro. The Library is intact but has something happened after I updated the vault? I can't remember if the vault size was so much smaller before I transferred all the date from my old Mac to my new one. Should I delete everything on the external hard drive containing the Vault and create a brand new vault?
    Advice welcome.

A bit late, but just thought I'd add to this. Tidysteve is right, the previews can use up a lot of space. If you're using hi-res previews, they're effectively a JPEG of the same dimensions as the original file, so they can be quite big. If I do hi-res previews for my DSLR they can be up to 4 or 5 MB each so it could definitely explain the big difference.
Try rebuilding your previous at a smaller size. BUT, do it when you've got nothing else to do and walk away for a while as it will take a loooong time.

  • Aperture library and duplication

I have Aperture 2 and have recently imported my iphoto library. Unfortunately i have imported what appears to be 3 times and now have 15,000 images. I am in such a buggers muddle that I think the best way is to start afresh and delete the aperture library completely.
If I do this will it delete the files in Iphoto? Any other suggestions? I spent several hours last week deleting all the excess stuff manually. I then tried to copy the library a day later only to find that the original library with too many images had reappeared????

I guess that you may have imported both the original untouched images as well as the edited versions from iPhoto.
Aperture will add either of the keywords "Iphoto Original" and "iPhoto Edited". If you want only to keep and maintain your original un-touched images as masters in Aperture then you can search for and delete those images tagged with "iPhoto Edited".
An easy way to get an overview of your library content is to click on "Library">"All Photos" and then open the search HUD. Here you select either of the two keywords listed above. Now you will be able to see the number of images at the buttom of the browser window.
Hope this can be of any help to you.

  • Aperture Library and Retrospect Backups

I am a new Aperture user and I'm wondering if any other Aperture users have successfully come up with a Retrospect selector that will NOT include the Aperture library when performing a backup.
I have tried several different versions, to no avail.

    Any suggestions?

  • Aperture Library and iPhoto library are different sizes for the SAME images

    Hi.
I'm a PROUD new Aperture owner (licensee) since last night. YIPPEE!!!
I imported my photos from iPhoto without a hitch. The same number of images, and I can access them all. Now, I know the two apps do different things, but I was expecting parity between the folders or Aperture's folder being heavier. It's MUCH less. Even with my previews. My iPhoto library is about 32GB and the Aperture library is about 9GB.
Is it because iPhoto is doing full size JPG previews of everything? That would add approximately 10GB, I think, but the size disparity is confusing me.
Any ideas what happened? Is all well?
    Scott

You can choose to store your images IN (eg. copied) the aperture library, or as referenced masters (eg. you keep your own folder structure on a disk, and aperture only keeps the metadata and previews of it in the library). Main downside of referenced masters is that your images aren't backed up in the vault--you need your own backup strategy. Main upsides are that you can easily access your images in the finder, or with other apps, and that you can keep your images on another disk from your library. I have a Macbook Pro as my main computer, but my image library wouldn't fit on the internal drive, so I keep the Aperture library on the internal, and all my raw files on an external. I can access the previews for other purposes (mail, web, slide shows, etc.) when I'm away from my desk.
I have no idea why the iphoto library is so large--don't use iphoto much.

  • ITunes 10 doesn't see my Aperture Library and I can't sync phots to iPhone4

I upgraded to iTunes 10, now when I plug in my iPad or iPhone to my MacPro iTunes tells me this device was sync'd with another photo library and should it delete the pictures to sync with photos from this computer. I said yes on my iPhone4 sync, it deleted all the photos on the phone then when I click to the Photo section it tells me there are 0 photos in my Aperture library!!!! So now I can't sync my photos as it believes they don't exist despite there being over 20,000 in Aperture!!! It sees my old iPhoto library no problem. How do I get iTunes to recognise my Aperture library to allow me to sync photos again?

    thanks Tony,
I clicked on the Library and that did it .. (I never found the "switch libraries" menu item) but this worked great ...
but just to give a complete solution ... I was looking for a option to use 2 screens and decided to look in the Preferences file and at the top was an option to designate a library .. to point to one. I guess I needed to look a little harder... thanks for your time and help,

  • Aperture library and macbook pro

I have a G5 and keep my aperture library on a second hard drive in the computer so that my software does not compete with the library, what should I do for my macbook pro since I have only one hard drive, where should I put the aperture library? any suggestions for setting up a good system when using raw files on a lap top?

Are you using managed or referenced files?
I reference the images and both those images and the AP library are on an external FW800 portable drive. Why? Because my MBP's internal drive is not all that large. That works well for me.
