Aperture Library Issues on NAS - Advice Needed

List-
Need some practical advice here. I've got a 90GB Aperture library that resides on a NAS (QNAP 419P II) that is experiencing major issues. Understood that having the library live on a non-HFS+, non-local drive is not advised by Apple, but it's been there for two years with no issues to speak of.
I had a power failure occur that seems to have done some damage to the library in some way. Upon opening the library, I got an error that said that there were inconsistencies with the file and that it needed to be repaired. I repaired it, and noticed something strange. In almost all files, the picture resolution was poor and both the camera and lens information was gone--in addition to the fact that the Adjustments capability was disabled.
I ran the Aperture first aid and ran all three processes--concluding with the full library rebuild. It looked to be successful and resolution, previews, and picture info returned--but halfway through the preview reprocessing the process just stopped and the beach ball of death ensued. I let it run overnight and it never recovered. I had to force quit and now if I reopen the file it say that there are inconsistencies and that the library needs to be repaired, which won't help.
I also tried to move the library off of the NAS an onto the local drive, but encountered an Error - 50 message--something that apparently is well known in the NAS world where Mac permissions get screwy when dealing with non HFS+ drives.
I have a backup of the original library, but it is sitting in a cloud repository (CrashPlan) that will take time and money to restore.
All of the masters are intact in the Aperture directory, and I have very few major adjustments made to any photos. Aperture is really just a repository for me.
So any practical advice would be appreciated as to how I can create a new local Aperture library and get all of the existing photo files there. I am pretty much giving up on the idea of getting the existing NAS-based library to work properly, so this is more of a real-world question on how to create a new library and eliminate whatever issues there are with the other Aperture files. It looks like everything in the Aperture package is in place, but the library itself is just malfunctioning.
I am also considering moving everything into iPhoto as well, as Aperture may simply be more than I need for my usage. If is is faster and a but simpler to manage, that could be the right answer as well.
Thanks in advance for any ideas or guidance.

The problem is most likely with the library itself being located on the NAS.
But you can have a hybrid solution where the library is located on your internal drive while the actual image files are located externally, eg on your NAS. Image files stored within the Apeture library are called "managed" while image files stored externally are called "referenced". Whichever approach you take, the process is the same:
If you try to make a new Library from your masters, you will lose your project structure. The resulting mess will be in accordance to how you created your projects. Basically, if you look at your Masters folder, that's what you'll end up with when you import your masters. If that isn't a problem, the process is simple
Step 1: Prep.
Move or copy your masters out of the library bundle to a folder (to make them more accesible in finder).
Step 2: Create new library.
Within Aperture, from the File menu "Switch to Library -> Other/New..." to create a new Library on your internal drive.
Set the preferences to indicate previews/faces etc. I'd turn these off for now as they will slow you down.
Step 3: Import your images.
Within your new library, File -> Import - Folders as Projects. This gives you a dialog where you specifiy what and where to import.
If you choose "Import folders as: Folders and Projects" you will get a folder structure that matches the Masters folder, with projects at the end of the chain with names like 20120213-200100.
If you choose "Import folders as: Projects and Albums" you will get a single Project called "Masters" with a folder and Album structure that matches the Masters folder.
Neither of these will look particularly great. If you want to avoid this mess, here's what I'd try.
Fix your library again like you did before. After the rebuild, go to the Aperture activity window (SHIFT + CMD + 0) and cancel the preview generation process before it has chance to hang. This should give you a sem-functional library, hopefully functional enough for the next step:
Select all images and use File -> Relocate Original to move your original files out of the library. During this process you can specify that the originals are stored in sub-folders that match the project name, within a parent folder if required.
This gives you a much neater structure for importing into your new library where the projects will get the folder names (which will be your existing project names). It may not be perfect, for example if you have the same project name in different folders and don't/can't segregate them, but it's a lot cleaner than just importing your masters folder.

  • FCPX and Aperture Library Issues

Does anyone else have issues with FCPX being unbearably slow when loading an Aperture library when accessing the Photos window on the lower right? I have all the most current versions of both Aperture and FCPX. I have a Macbook Pro Retina with i7 2.6gig processor. 16 gigs of RAM. My Aperture library is very large, about 300,000+ images. The Aperture is located on an external Thunderbolt drive. It can take as much as an hour for the still images to show up in the photo window. Any suggestions our there for speeding this process up. It's one of the main reasons I use Aperture, the supposed terrific integration between all Apple programs. I this speed it's much faster to just export the images and forget about going through FCPX. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you don't need all 300,000+ images in FCP, I would export what you need and import it into the event library.

  • How do I move my Aperture Library to Synology NAS

I am trying to set up a Synology DS1512+ and want to store my Aperture library on it.  I'd appreciate any tips on how to best move the library from my iMac internal drive to the NAS device. The main reason I purchased the DS1512+ was to store my library on a device which I could expand as needed and which provided some data redundancy in case a drive fails.

Aperture will not open the library on a drive that is not formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled), at least the newest Aperture versions are checking the formatting of the drive.
In addition to that -  Apple advises against using network volumes, see:  Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library,
There is a risk of transmission errors and database corruption.
Also, the access to a NAS will be a lot slower than on a directly connected drive. Aperture will be less responsive. It is preferable, to have the Aperture library on the fastest drive you have.
See this long thread in the "More Like this" to the right: Re: Nas (Synology DS413j) and Aperture
If you want your NAS  primarily for backup, create a writable disk image on the NAS with the correct formatting, and store the library on that disk image.

  • Ref. aperture library issue

    Hey!
I use my macbook for photo editing. I have one Aperture library locally and ca. a 200 gb referenced library on a external hard drive.
Unfortunately my external hard drive failed recently. On it I had a referenced aperture library of ca. 200 gb. Fortunately I had a copy of the library on my iMac!
However, when I copied my library over to a new ext. hard drive and connect it, the 200 gb of referenced files all seem to be offline still when working from my main library on the macbook. I tried naming the hard drive to the same as the old one, still it doesn't find it.
I tried fiddling around with File --> Locate Referenced Files ---> Located my hard drive BUT the aperture library with the referenced files doesn't show! The folder it lies in is shown as empty. Can anyone help a poor boy out?
    Relevant information:
    Aperture Version name: 3.5.1
Hard drive: Max OSX Extended (Journaled)
    Mavericks
    Thank you for any response!

Hi.  Frank is trying hard, but it is impossible to communicate without well-defined, shared terms.  Since the terms are specific to Aperture, and shared by all who know Aperture, it is your responsibility to help yourself first, by learning the terms and using them.  Then we can help you.
Please see my concise guide to the parts of Aperture.
The Library is a database of Images.  It shows in Finder as a file, but is actually a Finder Package.  You can right-click the Library file, select "Show contents" and view the many (hundreds to millions) of files in the Library package.  (Don't change _any_.)
In Aperture, what you see are Images.  Every Image has an Original.  "Original" is the term Aperture uses to refer to an imported image-format file.
Aperture is non-destructive: your Originals are _never_ altered.
You can store your Images' Originals wherever you want.  It is _highly_ recommended that you store them on a locally mounted drive.  Aperture provides robust tools to move any Image's Original in and out of the Library, or to any available drive, at any time.
The convention of calling a Library "referenced" or "managed" misleads.  Each Image's Original is either managed or referenced.  If all of the Images in a Library each have the same relationship to their Originals, the Library can be said to be either "managed" or "referenced".  Since any Image's Original can be either, a Library can be "mixed".
It is possible to import a file into each of two Libraries.  This is foolish and should not be done.
All computers have at least one built-in drive.  This drive is called the "System Drive" because it holds the OS (= Operating System).
As an additional effort to communicate precisely, please do not use "it" to refer to anything.  Specify all referents.

  • Aperture Library issues.

Ok, after hours of fiddling around and getting nowhere, its time to ask for some help. Last week I was running aperture 2 just fine on my internal macbook hard drive but needed to swap to my Maxtor external to free up some space. This was relatively easy, moved the library onto the external, then pointed Aperture to where the new library was. Fine.
While out and about I uploaded some new photos and created a second library and just slapped it on my desktop. Fine, pointed aperture to this new little library, able to edit etc. All good. Possibly important - while out and about, I also did the newest Aperture update.
Now I get back home and want to access the old library. I figure if I just point aperture back to my main library on my external hard drive, it would load up. But no. The splash screen comes up and either just sits there. Sometimes the beachball until a force quit is done. And often it shows the stats of my temporary desktop library (1 project - 28 photos) even when the preferences say that it should be connecting to the External.
Kinda ripping my hair out here.
I've tried a bunch of renaming and moving around. Copied the library that was on the external drive, back onto the internal and tried booting that up. Nothing. Yet, if I create a brand new empty library, it loads up the app just fine.
    Totally perplexed. Help please.
    Thanks

There is a good chance that the update is what messed you up. My boilerplate recommendation for updating is:
Software-eject external drives and disconnect them. Make sure that the OS is fully version-current. Immediately prior to and immediately after every installation of any kind (essentially anything that asks for sysadmin password) I recommend repairing Permissions. Note that repairing Permissions at other times does not have the same effect as immediately prior to and immediately after installations; i.e. repairing Permissions is not some kind of magic fix to use after problems present.
On the Photoshop forums for years there have been many instances of some folks getting poor or unstable performance out of setups that other folks get good performance out of. We see the same thing here on the Aperture forums. The suggested protocol of repairing Permissions is one of the routines that many of us with long term good Adobe performance have tended to follow.
There are many tens of thousands of files with Permissions settings. IMO maintaining them in a consistent state immediately before and after each installation of any kind is a potentially useful protocol with no down side risk.
After the fact unfortunately nothing that you have not already tried that comes to my mind. Please describe exactly what all the hard drives and Libraries are, someone may have a suggestion.

  • Sharing Aperture library with another user on the same mac

    Hi
I just upgraded to Aperture 3.3, on a MBP running Lion (10.7.4) - I am trying to share the library with my wife so that each of us can retain our separate accounts and preferences and be able to edit/print/add pictures to the library
I've seen some other posts, suggesting creating a separate directory outside of /Users which I've done: I've created /ApertureLib and moved the library there. I made sure I set permissions for owner, group and others to read/write/execute
When i try opening the library through my wife's account it tells me that "the library is being used by (null), you must first quit (null) to use this library"
I added sticky bits, tried to set ACLs, no dice...
    any suggestions?
    Thanks!
PS: all of the image files are actually stored on a NAS box and mounted via AFP. I tried moving the Aperture library to the NAS box but the performance was atrocious. so I kept the library on Macintosh HD and just reference the picture files from the NAS share.

That is the safest solution. The Aperture library should reside on a local volume, MacOS X extended formatted. Your NAS probably is neither local nor formatted MacOS X extended, see
Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
I am trying to share the library with my wife so that each of us can retain our separate accounts and preferences and be able to edit/print/add pictures to the library
Aperture is a single User program. Only one of you can use Aperture at a time. So you hvae to quit Aperture in your account, before your wife can launch it from her account. Also make sure that iPhoto is not using the library.
One big problem with sharing a Library are permissions and ownerships. When you make changes to an Aperture Library and add images, you are the owner of the added images. The safest way to share a library therefore would be to put it on an external volume or onto a separate partition of your hard drive. Then you can set the "Ignore ownership on this volume" flag and share the data with out permission problems. To set this flag on a volume, select it in the Finder and use "File > Get info" from the Finder's main menu bar (or press cmd-I).

  • Can't open aperture library in iPhoto

When I try to open my Aperture library (v3.4.4) with iPhoto (v9.4.3), I get the following message and the application quits:
Aperture library needs to be upgraded.
To open this Aperture library in iPhoto, it first needs to be upgraded with Aperture 3.3...
Both iPhoto and Aperture worked properly with a shared library prior to installing the 3.4.4 Aperture update in mid-April 2013. Upon first launch of Aperture after the update, there was a message stating that the library needed to be upgraded. The upgrade completed succesfully, and Aperture has been running properly.
To remedy the problem, I have tried the following:
    1) Repair Permissions of the Aperture library
    2) Repair Database of the library
    3) Rebuild Database of the library
    4) Opening the iPhoto library with the menu command <Open Library in iPhoto> in Aperture (Same notice to upgrade the library appears)
    My setup is:
    - Latest 27" iMac w/ 3.2GHz Core i5, 16GB RAM
    - OSX 10.8.3
    - Aperture v3.4.4
    - iPhoto v.9.4.3
    - Aperture library is stored in the local hard drive in the Pictures folder
    - iPhoto used to make print products only availble in iPhoto
I have searched the boards and have noticed people with similar symptoms but not the same circumstances.
Does anyone have a suggestion or solution?
    Thank you.

    Added:
Just in case you cannot find a backup of the Aperture Library that has been created with AP 3.4.4, make a current backup of your Aperture library and trash the file "DataModelVersion.plist". Then open your library in Aperture 3.4.4. Aperture creates a new version of this file, at least my experiments showed, that the file can be restored this way.

  • Aperture library corrupted - have photos on iPad; how to get them back on my Mac?

My Aperture library became corrupted after a Time Machine restore. For some reason, half the photos are missing and videos are all scrambled.
I still have my complete Aperture library on my new iPad (in iPhoto for iOS). Does anyone know if there is a way to get the photos off my iPad and back onto my Mac so I can restore my complete library? I will never rely on a Time Capsule for Aperture backups again, learned my lesson!

    deepey,
have you tried the usual trouble shooting after restoring your Aperture Library from Time Machine? If you invested a lot of work into your Aperture library I would try first to fix this, before giving up on it.
If your Aperture Library is referenced you probably need to reconnect the missing masters (select the images with missing masters and select File->locate referenced file).
If your Library is managed, the "Aperture Library First Aid Tools "(repairing permissions and repairing/rebuilding the library) may help, see Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
Transfer from the iPad (sorry, I do not have an iPad available right now to try it, only an iPod): Do you have Photo Stream enabled? You can transfer via PhotoStream or use the sync cable - Aperture can see the iPad as a camera and import like from a camera, see: Re: Importing photos on iPad to Aperture

  • Cannot open aperture library in iPhoto

I recently opened an old iPhoto library in Aperture. This changed the file extension, and presumably the file structure. Libraries are supposed to be interchangeable between the two apps, but now I get the following message when I try to open the libary in iPhoto: "To open this Aperture library in iPhoto, it first needs to be upgraded with Aperture 3.3 or later. Quit iPhoto and then open your library in Aperture to upgrade it." I'm running Aperture 3.4.5 and iPhoto 9.4.3. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the database (and whatever the third option was when Aperture is launched with Command-Option). Any suggestions?

    Stephen,
the problem is probably an inconsistent DateModelVersion.plist file in the Aperture Library.
If the library cannot be repaired, try to restore this file from your backup, from a time when the library could be opened in iPhoto. If you have Code installed, you can try to edit the file manually.

  • Sharing Aperture library with iPad: a little annoyance...

When editing a photo with a 3rd party plugin (or Photoshop), Aperture creates a 2nd version in TIF or JPG. This image is stacked with the main image. 9 times out of 10, the image edited should become the primary image I want to see, with the RAW (or original master) becoming a backup in the stack.
I wish there was an option for iTunes/iPad to sync only the top image of the stacks within a giving event. If anyone knows of a way to do this currently please let me know.
    Thanks!

  • Aperture library sync over two machines?

Is there a way to sync aperture libraries over two machines on a LAN?
I am going to try aperture but I am not sure which machine to install it on.
I have a mac pro and a mac mini which I run side by side. I use my mac mini for email, and iphoto, iPad syncing and music and my mac pro as my main work machine for music production.
Ideally I would like to install it on the mac pro where I get the extra power and screen real estate but then I do not want to miss out on not having photos on the iPad. As the iPad syncs with my mac mini, I am torn between the two.
Does anyone have any suggestions on this matter?
    It woudl be much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Felix

And that works fine unless you need both machines to have the library at the same time.
And it wasn't my point it was the OP's
    From the first post:
I have a mac pro and a mac mini which I run side by side. I use my mac mini for email, and iphoto, iPad syncing and music and my mac pro as my main work machine for music production.
So for the orignal specs both machines required a copy of the library.
Let's say in the middle of working on the Aperture library on the MacPro he needs to email an image to someone. Aperture will have to be shutdown, the disk unmounted and carried over to/cabled into the Mini. Just to send an email. Seems a lot easier to just have a copy of the library on the mini. The library on the Mini could even be a stripped down copy, no masters just the previews this way it makes it impossible to make changes on the Mini to images if that is a concern.

  • "To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded".  Aperture already up to date. still cant open aperture library. please advice

When I try to open my aperture library, this is the message pop out  " TO OPEN THIS iPHOTO LIBRARY IN APERTURE, IT FIRST NEEDS TO BE UPGRADED. "
My apperture application is already up to date. no more upgrade available. please advice what to do.

The update refers to the library not the application.
So is this an Aperture library you are trying to open in iPhoto or an iPhoto library you are trying to open in Aperture? You're post is confusing on this point.
In either case make sure the library is up-to-date in the originating application then the other should open it.
BTW what version of iPhoto abnd Aperture are you running?

  • Need help in distributing Master Folder (all my original pics), Aperture Library, Aperture Back-up, Vault and Time Machine

I have a desktop iMac and three external HDs. One HD called Aperture Library (2T) now has Aperture Library, Time Machine backups and Master Folder, which is where I put my RAW files of pictures I want to keep. A second HD called Aperture back-up (1T) has another large Master Folder. This was created a long time ago when I was using Lightroom. I plan to transfer pictures on to HD Aperture Library > Master Folder so I will have 1 Master Folder. A third external HD called Vault (1T) now only contains my Quicken b/u.
I have not made a vault yet for Aperture, because I am in the process of exporting files from Lightroom and bringing them into Aperture 3. What a mess, especially because I was not able to use my photo apps (Lightroom or Aperture) for a few months and forgot  the do's and don'ts. Please help me organize this stuff while I have the time and motivation. Greatly appreciated.

Note that Masters need only be backed up once (but to multiple backup locations) and that backup should happen immediately after copying to the hard drive from the camera card, before involving Aperture or any other images management app.
Time Capsule is an ongoing regular-routine backup process. Image originals instead need irregularly timed backup, once.
IMO referenced Masters make far more sense than building huge managed-Masters Libraries.
    • Hard disk speed. Drives slow as they fill so making a drive more full (which managed Masters always does) will slow down drive operation.
    • Database size. Larger databases are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller databases are.
    • Vaults. Larger Library means larger Vaults, and Vaults are an incremental repetitive backup process, so again larger Vaults are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller Vaults are. One-time backup of Referenced Masters (each file small, unlike a huge managed-Masters DB) is neither incremental nor ongoing; which is by definition a more stable process.
Managed-Masters Libraries can work, but they cannot avoid the basic database physics.

  • IPhoto and Aperture referenced library issues

    Hi,
For the last couple of days I've been busy trying to get my iPhoto/Aperture library to work properly. I recently created a referenced library using Aperture because of lack of space on my internal ssd. I can see all of my Projects, thumbnails, metadata etc. in both iPhoto and Aperture when my external drive is disconnected. However, there are two major issues:
    1) Most of the video thumbnails are broken, both in Aperture and iPhoto. By double clicking a thumbnail of a video (.mov, .avi etc.) it sometimes starts playing (with the external drive connected), sometimes it doesn't, totally inconsistent. I can export the video and it works just fine.
    2) While using iPhoto with the external drive disconnected, all Events are there, the thumbnails are there, everything looks ok, but I can only view some of the previews/photos after double clicking the thumbnails. A dialogue opens up saying "The volume for [imagefilename] cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume..", but I can actually see the full size preview behind this dialogue. By clicking "Cancel" the photo dissapears and is replaced by a black screen with a grey exclamation mark. This does not occur while using Aperture, I can see all of my previews in full glory when the external drive is disconnected. However, with the external drive connected everything works in iPhoto (except above mentioned issue with videos).
Please boys and girls, I need your help on this one!
