Aperture library lost after deleting preferences/repair?

Hi:
I tried opening Aperture this morning and got an error message saying: "There was an error opening the database for  the library <library_name>."
I found this article from Apple support (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805) on the problem.  I wasn't able to use the "first aid" tools (even with Option/Cmd held down, Aperture refuses to open) so I deleted my user preferences.
I was able to reopen Aperture, but now EVERYTHING is gone.  I use referenced files (apparently, a good thing in this case) so I know that the original RAW or TIFF files are there.  I also verified this independently through Finder.
However, I'm not sure where all my projects are, or my keywords/tags on the photos.  My fear is that this is all stored in the Aperture database, and that it's all gone at this point.  Is that the case?
By the way - I tried a repair, and nothing happened.  I'm guessing the library file is "zeroed out" at this point (everything gone) and so a repair job didn't have anything to repair.
Bottom line - how screwed am I at this point?
Jim

Hi Frank:
I really appreciate all your help, especially since I know you're doing this out of the kindness of your heart...
OK, answers:
All referenced files, nothing managed.
There's a backup (I think) of library from last month, I may end up reverting back to that.
RE: how the drive is formatted - I was pretty sure I'd formatted it OS X extended with journaling, but Disk Utilities show it's a Win NT filesystem.
Tried copying the library to my internal HDD, it won't even copy over (the copy function just says "Preparing to copy to desktop" but never completes).
I'll try the rebuild but since I (apparently) can't get Aperture to 'skip over' the new catalog it creates (as opposed to pointing it to the old catalog), then I don't know how the rebuild will turn out.
Been using it for a while, and there's enough work in it that it'll be a PITA to recreate - especially if I've lost my tags and my non-destructive edits.  If those are all still there somehow, someway, in XML files or whatever, that's cool.  Fortunately my file structure on the HDD is "/PHOTOS/<year>/<month/<shoot date and name>", and the structure for my projects is (was?) the same.  So if all I have to do is recreate the projects, not a big deal.

I do not have a startup disk. I did try fsck (based on what I learned from your reply-thank you). This failed (fsck); here is the message:

  • Help!- aperture library disappeared after copy

I'm screwed...After a long holiday with my macbook and my aperture (3.0) library (90GB) on an external drive I finally get home and decide to copy the library onto my iMac (pictured folder). I always keep a copy in my external drive as a backup and for macbook use (internal drive too small).
Well, I connect the drive to my iMac, and try replacing the aperture library. Takes very long thinking, so I decide to delete the old aperture library on my iMac and just do a simple copy. Everything seems fine, it starts and says it has 50 minutes to go...so I leave for dinner. An hour later I come back and not only had the aperture library not been copied (only 700 mb or so of it), but the source isn't there either! i.e. it disappeared from my external drive!!
I though it might be a database problem, but mac os x says I have 90 GB more free space on my external drive, so the aperture library seems to have been deleted!
HELP HELP HELP....all of my photography is in there and I cannot believe I have lost everything just by trying to copy it!
    thanks for any suggestions!

Yes, I must agree. I have exactly the same problem. Come on Apple - do not invite us to 30 day free trial and give us this hassle for the weekend.
    Any help appreciated.
The 30 day free trial cannot convert an Aperture 2 library.
Using the trial you can can only import into a new Aperture 3 library, and should not have any of these conversion issues.
We converted 6 workstations this weekend, specifically did not convert the imaging as that can be done in the future on an as-needed basis.
All of the libraries reside on disks that are no more than 40% full, for performance reasons.
The first library we converted was 500GB and at about 2.5 hours it froze at about 58%. I trashed the partial conversion and started over with a clean copy. This time, in Aperture 2 I did a Library rebuild before I converted. After this the conversion ran perfectly, in about 4 hours.
I ended up with a new file called Aperture Library, and another file called Aperture Library_Original. I found that this is the way the conversion is designed if you have the diskspace for 2 full Libraries. If you do not, it will delete the original after the conversion.
At any rate before converting run a rebuild in Aperture 2, and then make a backup of that library. You will then have a very clean original should anything happen in the conversion.
I am happy to say we followed the rebuild and backup on the other 5 Libraries, ranging in size from 500GB to 1.2 TB, and all the other conversions went smoothly.
The key is have plenty of diskspace available, more than double the size of your library, and Aperture will leave an Aperture Library_Original which can still be opened in A2.

  • Menu entry under 'Tools' for connecting Bridge with Photoshop gone after deleting preferences

Hi, after I had problems with Photoshop HDR-Pro dialog not coming up, I deleted the preferences of both Brodge and Photoshop. Now HDR-Pro is working again, but just from inside Photoshop, not from Bridge. I don't see the menu entries under Tools to batch pictures in Photoshop. The tick in Bridge -> prefs -> start scripts -> auto collection cs5 is set. Actually I de-selected and selected, deleted prefs 3 times, it's still set now, but the menu doesn't show.
The first time I deleted Bridge's prefs, the Illustrator menu was gone as well. After deleting the prefs again, de-selecting and selecting the Illustrator bits in the start scripts, it's showing again. Only Photoshop is still missing. I read this article
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3941856#3941856
but it didn't help - the start scripts are set correctly in Bridge's preferences, and I've deleted the prefs several times now.
    Can anyone help?
    The versions:
    Bridge 4.1.0.54
    Photoshop 12.1 x64
    Thanks in advance
    Dagmar

Don't know what you mean with deleting prefs, did you use the option key to reset the preferences? or do you mean deleting the Bridge plist file from the user library preference folder.
And in PS the same, did you use the key commands for refreshing preferences?
I understand that you have CS5.5 and it did work before? Also do system maintenance with check and repair disk permissions, (use Apple Disk Utility for this).

  • Aperture library removed after transfer to Photos

    Hi
Wonder if anyone can help - I made a mistake and imported my Aperture library into Photos without thinking...and it seems to have deleted the Aperture library, so when I open Aperture there is nothing in there...no projects, albums etc.  How can I restore this to Aperture and delete the Photos library??
    Thanks!

If your images were stored in the Aperture Library, migrating them to Photos should have left the Aperture Library intact, although with a different suffix. Check in Users > Pictures (or wherever you kept the library) to see if you can manually locate and launch it.
If your images were "referenced" in Aperture (stored outside of the Library file) and your Photos preference was set to move them to the Photos Library, then it is possible that Aperture no longer can "find" them.
To restore the Aperture Library folder use your Time Machine, or other, backup. There is no automatic way to migrate Photos back to Aperture, that I know of.

  • I have just imported Iphoto library into aperture library, can I delete now the Iphoto Library ?

Hi, I have juste imported Iphoto library into Aperture Library (did a copy) - can I delete my Iphoto library as I won't use Iphoto anymore ?
    Thanks Hélème

    Helene,
Both of those things you pointed out are mere *metadata*.
When you imported your iPhoto library, since you did a copy, your libraries are completely independent.
When I was in your situation, I moved my iPhoto library to an external disk and then went to the Aperture library to see how it behaved, even though i was 99.99% sure my iPhoto and Aperture libraries were separate.

  • Aperture Library permissions changed, deleted package contents

I was helping a friend move his Aperture setup from an iMac (10.4) to a Macbook Pro (10.5). He has set up a referenced system on external drives, and the Aperture Library is also kept on the same external drives. On the iMac, we set up permissions to only allow his account to access the Library and referenced masters, allowing read-only access to other users.
After connecting the external drives to the MBP (10.5, remember), I changed each drive to respect the permissions on each. Then I changed the permissions to be read and write for the current user. Aperture would not open the file, complaining about permissions access (I may have also changed the ownership as well, trying to get it to open).
Then the Aperture Library icon was grayed out; trying to "show package contents" became inaccessible, saying it was busy "moving or copying files." When it finished, the Library file went from 22.9 GB to 0 Kb. All the package contents had disappeared. Aperture still will not open the Library file because the permissions are "incorrect."
This was disastrous, to say the least (but we had a backup, though it was about a week old). The only "odd" thing that stands out was the username/owner was the same on each system (10.4 and 10.5).
Any idea why changing the permissions would cause the Library's contents to disappear? Any idea if I can recover the contents?

Well, yes, changing the external drive to "Ignore Permissions" would solve the problem in the short term. But it would be better to control access to the Library file on the new computer.
Would checking "Ignore Permissions" restore the Library package contents?

  • Aperture Library Menu after iPhoto import

When I purchased Aperture I imported by iPhoto library into it.  This created a bewildering number of entries in the library listing seen on the left of the screen.
my Library listings on the left in windowed view.  It is just clogged with entries created when I imported my iPhoto library... there are numbers, projects, dates, rolls and albums all one after anothe.  You seem to only be able to choose "all items" "favorite items" or "recent items" and some additional arrangments.  Is there a way to pare this down without damage?  Here is a small section of what I see...

    William,
what does your original iPhoto Library look like?
Your screenshot shows a list of projects. When you imported the iPhoto library, Aperture should have created one project for each of the events in the iPhoto Library. Does your iPhoto library have similar events?
If you see too many projects you can do two things to get them better organized:
Create folders (File > New > Folder) and drag related projects to the same folder. Then you can collapse the folders and hide the projects inside.
Merge related projects. If you select the "Projects" view (in the top section of the library inspector), you can merge projects by dragging a project on top of another project.
Do not delete projects, unless you want to delete the images in th projects. Projects are the containers of the images. Each image (and all its edited versions) resides in exactly one project, and deleting the project will delete the image and all its versions.

  • InDesign 5 'quit unexpectedly' after deleting preferences & even reinstalling

InDesign 5, after restarting my computer this morning, keeps crashing immediately when I try to open the software.
I have no idea why because it worked fine before the restart.
I tried deleting (all of them indicating from the forums) preferences:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe InDesign CS5.5
    ~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
    ~/Library/Caches/com.adobe.InDesign
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign

    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.adobe.InDesign.savedState

I even tried uninstalling and installing.
Can anyone out there help me?!
My error report at starting up:

just to confirm, do i do this through system preference and set one of the printers as default? do i also need to directly connect (with wire) the printer to the computer? i'm not quite sure how printers relate to this but i'll do whatever. thanks for your patience btw.

  • Non-compressed aggregates data lost after Delete Overlapping Requests?

    Hi,
I am going to setup the following scenario:
The cube is receiving the delta load from infosource 1and full load from infosource 2. Aggregates are created and initially filled for the cube.
Now, the flow in the process chain should be:
    Delete indexes
    Load delta
    Load full
    Create indexes
    Delete overlapping requests
    Roll-up
    Compress
In the Management of the Cube, on the Roll-up tab, the "Compress After Roll-up" is deactivated, so that the compression should take place only when the cube data is compressed (but I don't know whether this influences the way, how the roll-up is done via Adjust process type in process chain - will the deselected checkbox really avoid compression of aggregates after roll-up OR does the checkbox influences the manual start of roll-up only? ).
Nevertheless, let's assume here, that aggregates will not be compressed until the compression will run on the cube. The Collapse process in the process chain is parametrized so that the newest 10 requests are not going to be compressed.
Therefore, I expect that after the compression it should look like this:
RNR | Compressed in cube | Compressed in Aggr | Rollup | Update
    110 |                    |                    | X      | F
    109 |                    |                    | X      | D
    108 |                    |                    | X      | D
    107 |                    |                    | X      | D
    106 |                    |                    | X      | D
    105 |                    |                    | X      | D
    104 |                    |                    | X      | D
    103 |                    |                    | X      | D
    102 |                    |                    | X      | D
    101 |                    |                    | X      | D
    100 | X                  | X                  | X      | D
    099 | X                  | X                  | X      | D
    098 | X                  | X                  | X      | D
If you ask here, why ten newest requests are not compressed, then it is for sake of being able to delete the Full load by Req-ID (yes, I know, that 10 is too many...).
    My question is:
What will happen during the next process chain run during Delete Overlapping Requests if new Full with RNR 111 will already be loaded?
Some BW people say that using Delete Overlapping Requests will cause that the aggregates will be deactivated and rebuilt. I cannot afford this because of the long runtime needed for rebuilding the aggregates from scratch. But I still think that Delete Overlapping should work in the same way as deletion of the similar requests does (based on infopackage setup) when running on non-compressed requests, isn't it? Since the newest 10 requests are not compressed and the only overlapping is Full (last load) with RNR 111, then I assume that it should rather go for regular deleting the RNR 110 data from aggregate by Req-ID and then regular roll-up of RNR 111 instead of rebuilding the aggregates, am I right? Please, CONFIRM or DENY. Thanks! If the Delete Overlapping Requests still would lead to rebuilding of aggregates, then the only option would be to set up the infopackage for deleting the similar requests and remove Delete Overlapping Requests from process chain.
I hope that my question is clear
    Any answer is highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Michal

    Hi,
If i get ur Q correct...
Compress After Roll-up option is for the aggregtes of the cube not for the cube...
So when this is selected then aggregates will be compressed if and only if roll-up is done on ur aggregates this doesn't affect ur compression on ur cube i.e movng the data from F to E fact table....
If it is deselected then also tht doesn't affect ur compression of ur cube but here it won't chk the status of the rollup for the aggregates to compress ur aggregates...
Will the deselected checkbox really avoid compression of aggregates after roll-up OR does the checkbox influences the manual start of roll-up only?
This check box won't give u any influence even for the manual start of roll-up....i.e compression of aggreagates won't automatically start after ur roll-up...this has to done along with the compression staus of cube itself...
And for the second Q I guess aggregates will be deactivated when deleting oveplapping request if tht particular request is rolled up....
even it happens for the manual deleting also..i.e if u need to delete a request which is rolled up and aggregates are compressed u have to  deactivate the aggregates and refill the same....
Here in detail unless and until a request is not compressed for cube and aggregates are not compressed it is anormal request only..we can delete without deactivating the aggregates...
here in urcase i guess there is no need to remove the step from the chain...
correct me if any issue u found......

  • Indesign 5.5 won't open after deleteing preferences and uninstall/reinstall

I have had the Design Standard 5.5 suite installed for more than a year. A couple of times I have had trouble with Indesign and have successfully gotten it working again. My Indesign stopped opening again a couple of days ago. I tried deleting the preferences and the cached items as I have done previously (based on advice in these forums) and that didn't work. I uninstalled and reinstalled the program and it is still not opening. When I click on it, I get to "Starting up Service Registry" and it "disappears" without opening.
Any ideas on what I can do to get this program working again?
    Thanks!!

Well, I think we are getting closer! But I still need some help. I created a new user account and was able to re-login and InDesign opened just fine. But now I am not sure what to copy from my "test" user to my personal user. I tried copying these items
InDesign Defaults:Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
InDesign SavedDataWindows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\Caches\  (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
But I still can't get it to start under me. (Actually, when I went into the "Roaming" one under me, that path didn't exist. So I just copied the whole thing from my test user over there. Maybe that's the issue?
Any final guidance is appreciated. I am getting gray hairs here!

    Hi,
I had similar problem. InDesign CS5 crash at startup, all other apps work fine.
    My op.system Windows XP SP3.
I solved the problem with following steps:
    1. Setup another user account (must be administrative) - let say "test"
    2. Login to the new account
    3. Start inDesign (in my case it started)
    4. Close inDesign
    5. Logout
    6. Login to your user account
    7. Copy preference files from "Documents and Settings\test\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign" to "Documents and Settings\your account\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign"
    8. Start inDesign
In my case it worked. All other actions described in this forum did not.

  • Library Lost After Reboot

My Mac Pro intermittently cannot find its iTunes library after a system reboot.
I suspect this may have something to do with the fact that my library is stored on an external FireWire volume; it seems like after a reboot iTunes starts asking for the library before the Finder's finished fretting and checking over all my peripherals. If iTunes would just hold its horses until everything was properly mounted there would be no issue.
Is there any hope for me, or do I keep having to send my kids upstairs to re-jigger iTunes when I want to watch the AppleTV?
    Any tips appreciated.

External volume is Western Digital 3TB connected via FireWire-400)

If you have a bootable external drive, then purchase and download Disk Warrior-4 on to the external. Review the documentation and run the program to rebuild the directory on your affected (internal) drive. No guarantees here, although this is a viable approach.

    Can anyone help?
My player 40gb Zen Xtra froze and after contacting customer support, performing a disk clean up and upgrading firmware, on rebooting I am missing about 900 tracks even though my player has the same amount of free space left as before the problem.
Can the problem be solved without re formatting?

    Hi again,
hope I'm not bothering you - just wanted to say "thanks" - I did go through w/the process - deleted the files and then let it try and rebuild itself.  The only problem was that I still don't have all my stuff back.  I think, though, it's because the WMP got corrupted yesterday - the problem, most likely, was when I found this thing on the internet where I could get a bunch of free music downloads - didn't think there'd be a problem - they all came from archive.org, which I've used many, many times to get a lot of live Grateful Dead stuff and some other stuff, like live Tortoise, etc.  I think it might've been the content or the amount of stuff that did something to screw it up - not quite sure.  At least I have my most cherished stuff back!
Wow - I wish I had that much computer knowledge - I'm not stupid or anything, but not that great with mechanical stuff, electronics or deep into computers.  I think, though, if I were to get the right training I could pick it up.
Well, thanks again.  Hope you have a nice rest of your Sunday (it's 1/5 about 5:15pm).
    Take it easy,
    Kent M
