Aperture Library_original

I recently upgraded to Aperture 3 and have had a number of issues pop up during the upgrade process. After installing Aperture 3 from the disc, I opened up the program before checking for any software updates (my neighbor tells me this was a bad idea). I was prompted by Aperture 3 that I would need to upgrade my Aperture 2 library to the new format required for 3. I clicked 'OK' and went out for dinner.
I came back a few hours later and noticed my computer had locked up at 35% of the upgrade process. I had to force quit Aperture 3 and then reopened it. I never received another prompt to upgrade my library, but all my photos seemed to be there without any issues.
I noticed a little bit later that I now how 2 library files residing on my hard drive. "Aperture Library" and "Aperture Library_original". The "original" file was about 10GB smaller. When I checked the package contents on each, I noticed the file structure was different, which didn't concern me in itself, but I noticed that only a portion of my masters were present in the new Library. I have photos dating back to 2001 and the new library only contained masters from 2009 and 2010. The "original" library still had all the old masters.
I had some other issues come up, like not being able to use the brushes feature on 90% of my photos, so I eventually uninstalled Aperture 3 and got 2 back up and running. I then reinstalled 3 and ran the software update before opening (on my neighbor's recommendation) and was then prompted to upgrade my library again. The upgrade process went fine this time, but I'm still seeing only masters from 2009 and 2010 in the "new" library file. I'm able to use the brushes feature on all my photos now, but I'm a little concerned about what's contained in the "new" library.
I now have two rather larger library files sitting on my hard drive and I tried deleting the "original" file to free up some space. I received an error message that one of the raw files was currently in use, so I canceled the deletion.
Any ideas what's going on?

So the second time around, you upgraded Aperture library_original to Ap3 spec, but only some of the images have survived the upgrade?
Do you still have a copy of Aperture library_original in Ap2 spec so you can rerun the upgrade? If so, I'd make a backup copy of this asap so you always have a copy to work from.

  • Aperture Library_original.aplibrary

Hello all ... just updated from Aperture 2.1.4 two weeks ago to 3.1 with no apparent issues. Updated to 3.1.1 just the other day. I've noticed I have two aperture libraries in my pictures folder, one marked for version 3.1.1 and the other called "Aperture Library_original.aplibrary," which is about 10 gb bigger. Strangely, my iMac (250gb HD) still shows about the same amount of space available as before the Aperture 3 upgrade. Is this "Aperture Library_original.aplibrary" really there, because it doesn't seem like it's taking any space, but says it's 79gb. Can this be deleted or moved to an external drive? Thanks in advance!

So I copied the original.aplibrary to an external drive before moving it to the trash on the internal drive. Everything seemed to work fine, so I deleted it off the internal drive. Aperture still working fine. The only difference is before, my drive showed 133gb used and 116gb available. Now, it's reversed, showing 116gb used and 133gb available. Goofy, but everything seems OK now. I think Aperture just didn't delete the old library like it's supposed to during the upgrade from version 2 to version 3.

  • Aperture Library vs Aperture Library_original

    Hi all,
I have just completed my installation/upgrade from AP2 > AP3.... I'm liking the difference in speed definitely.
A quick question, which may be redundant but I would like to be sure.
I have a 1TB drive with my Aperture Library on. The *previous library* took up about 760gb. The new one takes up about 695GB. That adds up to 1.4TB. It doesn't make sense.
I had previously backed up my library before updating with TimeMachine, so I feel safe that I have a secure copy, but can I reliably delete the "Library_original" file?
I'm mostly concerned from a disk integrity and tidiness point of view.
    Thanks in advance.
    Aaron

    Hey Aaron,
I ran into the same problem recently, having "technically" more space being tied up by the two Aperture libraries then was possible. After a quick look around the forums I came to the conclusion that I would just copy the newest (v3.) library over to a new drive.
As far as I can tell everything moved over correctly and I haven't lost any photos. I do have a few backups, so I wasn't terribly concerned. Not sure if there is any good alternative.

  • Help!- aperture library disappeared after copy

I'm screwed...After a long holiday with my macbook and my aperture (3.0) library (90GB) on an external drive I finally get home and decide to copy the library onto my iMac (pictured folder). I always keep a copy in my external drive as a backup and for macbook use (internal drive too small).
Well, I connect the drive to my iMac, and try replacing the aperture library. Takes very long thinking, so I decide to delete the old aperture library on my iMac and just do a simple copy. Everything seems fine, it starts and says it has 50 minutes to go...so I leave for dinner. An hour later I come back and not only had the aperture library not been copied (only 700 mb or so of it), but the source isn't there either! i.e. it disappeared from my external drive!!
I though it might be a database problem, but mac os x says I have 90 GB more free space on my external drive, so the aperture library seems to have been deleted!
HELP HELP HELP....all of my photography is in there and I cannot believe I have lost everything just by trying to copy it!
    thanks for any suggestions!

    Any help appreciated.
The 30 day free trial cannot convert an Aperture 2 library.
Using the trial you can can only import into a new Aperture 3 library, and should not have any of these conversion issues.
We converted 6 workstations this weekend, specifically did not convert the imaging as that can be done in the future on an as-needed basis.
All of the libraries reside on disks that are no more than 40% full, for performance reasons.
The first library we converted was 500GB and at about 2.5 hours it froze at about 58%. I trashed the partial conversion and started over with a clean copy. This time, in Aperture 2 I did a Library rebuild before I converted. After this the conversion ran perfectly, in about 4 hours.
I ended up with a new file called Aperture Library, and another file called Aperture Library_Original. I found that this is the way the conversion is designed if you have the diskspace for 2 full Libraries. If you do not, it will delete the original after the conversion.
At any rate before converting run a rebuild in Aperture 2, and then make a backup of that library. You will then have a very clean original should anything happen in the conversion.
I am happy to say we followed the rebuild and backup on the other 5 Libraries, ranging in size from 500GB to 1.2 TB, and all the other conversions went smoothly.
The key is have plenty of diskspace available, more than double the size of your library, and Aperture will leave an Aperture Library_Original which can still be opened in A2.

  • Transfering  aperture library via vault to new comp

I apologize in advance if my question already have been answered in another thread. But I couldn't find any threads matching my problems.
I recently bought the new iMac after my old 24" could not handle the pressure anymore. I wanted to move my aperture library from the old to the new. And ofcourse I wanted all info (adjustment changes and so on) to come with in the move. After reading a few threads on the subject I created a "Vault" that I later opened up in the new comp. At a fist glance everything looks great in aperture but when opening up a picture to make adjustments it says "image offline".
On my old comp I can see (where my pics are stored) two aperture files:
    Aperture Library
    Aperture Library_original
    …so far so good.
But then that are tons (well, many) folders named like my projects in aperture. And not folders within the aperture library file but stand alone…if that makes any sense.
What am I doing wrong? I get all the pics over to my new comp with the help of Vault but can't edit any of my pics from a few months back (when for some reason aperture started to create folders outside the library file)
On my new iMac i have 2 files
    Aperture Library
    Aperture Library_old
    ...so no folders got transfered
    /Jonatan, sweden

It looks like your Aperture library were a referenced library. When you imported your image files you did not import the originals into the Aperture library, but stored them in folders outside the library. That are folders named like your projects that you are seeing. When Aperture needs to access the originals to render edited versions, it will reference the image files in those folders, see this section in the Aperture 3 User Manual: Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images
When you create a vault, Aperture will only include images that you imported into the library, not the originals you stored outside. You need to copy the folders with projects as well to your new mac and reconnect them to the image versions, otherwise you will not be able to edit your images.
But it looks like you did create these folders outside accidentally and did not intend to use referenced original files. If that is so, I'd suggest to repair this, by consolidating your library.
Select the "Photos" view in the source list of your Aperture Library and select all your images at once.
Then use the command "File > Consolidate Originals" from the main menu bar. This will move (or copy) all referenced images from the folders outside into your Aperture library.
When you now create a vault, it will contain all images. Use this new vault to recreate your Aperture library on your new mac.  You can also simply copy your Aperture library itself to your new mac. You do not need the detour using a vault.
BTW: Where Aperture will store the originals image files depends on the settings in the "Import" panel. Make sure the "Store Files" option is set to "In the Aperture Library".

  • Upgrading to Aperture 3, my Aperture 2 library got smaller (60GB vs. 102GB)

Moving from an old MacBook Pro running Aperture 2.1.4 to a new MacBook Pro, with Aperture 3.1.
I copied the Aperture 2 Library (55,000 images, nearly all referenced) to the new machine, and opened it in Aperture 3.1, which then upgraded my Library (overnight process).
Now I have two Libraries on the new machine: Aperture Library_original, and Aperture Library.
The new Aperture Library seems to work fine, and has the same number of photos as the original.
The original seems untouched, and if I try to open it in Aperture 3, it prompts me (again) to upgrade it.
    Here is my concern:
My new Library is only 60GB, whereas the original is 102GB.
What, if anything is missing? It seems to work fine, but I have not been able to check all 55K photos!
Searching online, I can't find any reference to Library size decreasing with the upgrade from Aperture 2 to 3. If anything, some complain that it becomes larger in Aperture 3.
Does anyone know what is going on, or how to check that my new Library is complete?

Your previews are best set to your screen size, the ideal preview size having an asterix next to it.

  • Aperture 3 - Error Importing Library

    Hi folks!
My Macbook's hard drive crashed so I had to reinstall OSX 10.6 and use the time machine to bring the stuff back.
After reinstalling everything I also updated OSX to 10.6.7 and and finally updated Aperture to 3.1.2 via App Store.
Then I tried to open the Aperture 3 and this happened:
    Error Importing Library
Now if I go to File/Switch to Library/Other/New... there is a new library called "Aperture Library (current default)"  (Version 3.1.2) including zero versions and masters.
My old library is automatically renamed as "Aperture Library_Original" including 17xxx versions... (Version 3.1.1)
I've tried to rebuild the library etc etc but it won't do it and gives the same Error Importing Library error all the time.
Now I even reinstalled everything again, installed 10.6.6 and now my Aperture is also 3.1.1. Still the same error comes..
Do you guys/girls have any idea what to try next?
    Thank you in advance!

Oops, not sure whether using References or Managed.. But I would bet that Managed..
Those other 2010 folders are from the time before Aperture 3, I purchased Aperture about 2 months ago via App Store.
Default Picture folder contains Aperture Libraries, iPhoto library, Photo Booth folder and few of those random 2010_ picture folders.. Don't even know why those are there anyway..
but but.. I'm now already starting to think that I've almost all of the pics in iPhoto..
If in Finder I right-click my old Aperture Library and choose "Show content" (or something like that, my OSX is in Finnish) -  I'm able to find those few new albums and their photos which are not in iPhoto.. If I just copy those to iPhoto and Import it again.. Naturally I would loose the project structure I've created in Aperture and few edited photos.. but at least I would get my Aperture back again and forget that this incident ever happened..

  • Aperture 2.0 Library disappeared after conversion in Aperture 3.0

Well, this is BAD. Converting the old Aperture 2 library in Aperture 3 and Aperture 3 crashed at the end of the process. After I restarted the program I got the message that there was no longer an aperture library. After checking in the finder I found that my whole library has actually disappeared from my system. What is the deal here? How come the library is completely gone, is there ANY way to get it back? And when I tried to start Aperture 2 again I got the message that the aperture library is a newer version and therefor cannot load. How come Aperture 2 seems to find a aperture library and aperture 3 can not? Is it maybe hidden from view in the finder or something? Any ideas?????
Hope to hear from you soon, thanks
    Cheers Q!

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down.  You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.

  • A single photo in Aperture smart album shows multiple times on Apple TV2.

Sometimes a random photo in my Aperture smart albums displays on my ATV2 multiple times..can I fix this? For example, currently a single picture shows up on the Apple TV in the photos taken "in the past week" smart album 124 times, and the same picture shows up in the "in the past month" smart album 15 times.
When I double check the picture in the original smart album on the computer, it appears correctly, i.e. only one time.
    Suggestions?

I'm having the same problem.  I deleted all the photos in the photostream then tried to drag a couple new ones in to see if they'd synch.  Nothing is happening.  I recently installed aperture (have about 125 gb in the library).  If anyone has an idea what to do, i'm open to try something.

  • Iphoto calendar is a mess, can we get a pro calendar in aperture?

I am making a calendar using the aperture library in iphoto and having lots of troubles.
When i have added the photos to their positions, i find that i need to edit some photos to fit their neighbours, and then having to close iphoto, open aperture and edit them, yet those changes fail to show up in the applied photos, so have to edit outside the project and replace the photos...
Also while working on this project my library is locked so i cannot open aperture without closing iphoto, even if i want to work on entirely different things, interrupting a normal day workflow.
When i reopen iphoto it has forgotten my position and just shows the full calendar again, forcing me to search again for the place the photo i have edited in aperture or to replace with another i have found that fits better.
The calendar templates are quite limited, on a few pages i wanted to place more photos or have other orientations which is possible when making a book, and the size of calendar is relatively small, could be good with a possibility of making professional calendars one step bigger.
Is there any way to tell apple that there are many who would need a proper calendar inside aperture, to be able to make professional products or who have migrated from iphoto being used to making calendars and cards and wanting to continue that in what should be a better program?
Even having the exact same calendar available in aperture would be huge benefit, and ensure many more being made!

That is what the command "Provide Aperture Feedback" in the Aperture Application menu is for:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
How are you switching between Aperture and iPhoto? When I use the commands "File > Open Library in Aperture"  and "File > open library in iPhoto"  to switch back and forth between the application, the iPhoto will open with the calendar selected, when I switch back from Aperture, albeit not on the calendar page, that I last viewed.

  • Aperture No Longer Working With Screen Saver?

For years I've been using my Aperture library (specifically, the "Flagged Photos") with the Screen Saver in OS X.  Since I upgraded to Lion last night, I have discovered that my Aperture library no longer shows up as an option in Screen Saver -- only iPhoto does.
As I am remiss to ditch years of work and return to iPhoto -- I was hoping someone might have discovered a solution for this problem (perhaps something to do with the iLife browser in Lion?).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you please explain what you mean about "checked the new sharing preferences?" I see no way of setting any "sharing" preferences in Preferences or anywhere else in Aperture. Do you mean you just looked at the sharing preferences?
Since I've upgraded to the latest version, when I go to the System Preferences, Aperture is very slow in showing up on the ScreenSaver settings under System Preferences and the virtual Library folders no longer show up (they show up under the Desktop window though). However, after closing Aperture, the screensaver would display "looking for pictures" and would not display the photos.
The latest upgrade definitely broke something, although it greatly improved Aperture's response time, as it was getting pretty sluggish before the upgrade.

  • How do I get custom book themes to appear in Aperture?

I want to create two custom book themes in Aperture - A4 Landscape and A4 Portrait - so that I can print them on A4 photo paper. However, after creating the custom themes, they do not appear in the custom theme list which is preventing me from creating an A4 sized book. I closed and restarted Aperture and I have also closed and restarted my MacBook.
My Aperture version is 3.5.1 and I am running Mac OS X 10.9.1.

Folders for the two custom themes I have created do appear in Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes.
    Schof,
I will try your suggestion of creating a new Aperture library and let you know what happens.
If a new library does not fix it,  there is probably a permissions problem with your user library, or a problem with the "Books Theme" folder.
I'd try to trash the "Books Theme" folder:
    Quit Aperture.
    Delete your "Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes".
    Log off and on again.
    Create a new Custom Book.
Can you now see it in the "Themes" drop-down menu?
If that does not help, trash the preferences as well:
    Users/MacPro/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
and log off and on again, or restart the system.

  • Updated my Aperture to 3.2 and now it won't open at all! I haven't backed my photos up and i'm worried i'm going to loose them all! Anyone else having problems or know how to fix this issue??? Cheers

    Any idea's guys????

You can still backup your library without opening Aperture.
Your Library is typically in your Pictures folder while the application is in your Applications folder.
So you should backup your Library first (drag it to an external HD to copy it or use a Vault) and then try the procedures on the Troubleshooting Basics page.

  • I was editing photos and it was getting stuck or frozen and working really slow, so I attempting to close aperture and reopen it but it won't quit aperture and now it won't open up to my photos either.  Any ideas?

I was editing photos and it was getting stuck or frozen and working very slowly.  I attempted to restart the computer but it would not allow me to quit aperture.  Now aperture appears in my toolbar but will not open up so I can work on any photos.  Any ideas?

Did you try opening from the Applications folder?
Depending on how far that gets you, I would also take a look at the Troubleshooting Basics.
