Aperture Library-referenced and managed-how to add to...

I'm trying to put all my images in one library.
Right now, I have a library that contains some referenced images, and some managed images.
I want to make the entire library referenced.  That is, I want all of th original images stored seperatley from the Aperture Library.
Should I reconnect (consolidate) the images that are currently referenced and then proceed to make all of them referenced, or can I select the images that aren't referenced and add them to the same folder where my other originals currently stored?
Thanks

For the ones currently managed: File -> Relocate Masters. or Relocate Original

  • Referenced and managed files

I know this is a topic with a wealth of discussions but my search doesn't seem to bring up what I'm looking for.  Can anyone direct me to previous discussions or other web sites that deal with the whole topic of referenced vs. managed files?  Is there a good book to pick up for that?  I want to have Aperture access my photos from an external drive (for freeing up hard drive space) and I need to better understand how to do that.  Yet it sounds like I should be keeping it in Aperture as well via some sort of compressed file (managed?)  Basically assume I know nothing and want to understand the ins and outs of referenced/managed masters.
    Thanks,
    Steve Hadeen

    Hi Steve.
It's hard to understand -- but not _that_ hard  .  A book is not required.  See if this short description helps.
Be careful (and specific) with your nomenclature -- it will keep you from getting mired in the bogs of confusion that rim our sun-lit plateau.  Your camera creates files.  You import files into Aperture.  On import, Aperture puts that file somewhere, and thereafter refers to it as a Master.  The Master is never altered.  You control where Aperture puts it (and you can have Aperture move it at any time).  What you see in Aperture is an Image.  Every Image has a Version and a Master.  The Version is a text file containing instructions on how to vary the Master to produce the Image.  The Version of the first Image created by Aperture when it imports a file is essentially null (it contains no information).  When you create a new Version, Aperture names it "Version 2".  (The confusion here is that Aperture encourages the user to call Images "Versions".  This is a bit of a devil's bargain: it helps the casual user, but confuses the careful user.)  You can see the Master of any Image displayed in the Viewer at any time by typing "m" (it triggers the Image/Master toggle).
All you need to do is have Aperture move some or all of your Masters to your external drive.  Note that you can easily, at any time, convert Masters from Managed to Referenced and vice versa.  Note too that backing up your Library does not back up any Referenced Masters.  You must back up Referenced Masters in addition to backing up your Library.

  • IPhoto library, Referenced and Copy Too Identification!

I have been creating a library with about 25000 pictures in it.
Unfortuantly I have been importing using both options of copied and referenced,
as I couldn't work out which to use. (was told at one point that copied lost some detail/quality which I can't tell the difference)
I have now decided to go with copied "Importing(Option ticked)
Question is, How looking at my pictures can I tell which ones are referenced and ones copied?
    Many thanks

How are you at hacking SQL databases? If you're comfortable doing that you might be able to movethe files into the Library and then point iPhoto at them
Other than that, you could try rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager having first set iPhoto to copy. This may or may not work. Note: This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
If it doesn't you're starting over from scratch, as Larry says.
Also, to confirm: there is no differnce between a Managed and a Referencd Library when it comes to the photos. This is just dumb file storage. There is nothing to be gained from running a Referenced Library, and in some cases, much to be lost.

  • TM backs up Aperture library over and over again!

Ladies and Gents; I look forward to your insight how this happens. Every time I work in Aperture, Time Machine backs up the whole library file to my Time Capsule(1TB), eating space like hungry dog.
My aperture library is refrenced, so the actual pictures are stored in folders on the hard drive and Aperture only keeps the references. As I have some 15000 pictures amounting to some 40GB, the referenced library is 18.9GB in size.
Even when I just delete some pictures (in Aperture) or do minor adjustments (create a version of a picture in Aperture) TM backs up 18+GB every time.
For now, I have excluded the Aperture library from backups but would like to understand why this bug happens and how to avoid it. I have read somewhere that the latest 10.5.3 updated fixed this - but aperently not for me.
My software is always updated and the iMac packed with power. Thanx for your time.

I just did some reading on the forums and it appears that the issue happens when Aperture is running while TM runs backup. Subsequently, next time TM runs a backup while Aperture is not running it will back up the whole Aperture library all over again.
At the same time some people suggested that 10.5.3 has solved this. Not for me, any ideas?

  • Vault size vs APerture library size and related questions

My aperture library is 50GB for some 65,000 referenced pictures...how does this compare with others? To me, it seems a bit big.
Also odd. The vault backup of my libarary is 9.1GB ONLY! How come?
I think that all of my pictures are referenced.....is there an easy way to check?
If I make a new fresh library and restore from the vault, what will I loose, if anything? Will I need to reconnect pictures or anything?

that seems about right to me. what's taking up space are previews and thumbnails. afaik, the vault doesn't hold any of those, only the database, albums, projects and configuration files.
if you restore from a vault, all the previews and thumbnails have to be rebuilt. you can save a little space that way, because the thumbnail files don't shrink when you erase photos or move them to another project, but personally i don't think it's worth the time and effort.

  • No opening of Aperture Library.aplibrary any more: HOW TO GET ACCESS?

It took me a long time till I decided to write this topic- I tried ALL the tips and hints described in this forum before.
This is the situation: APERTURE (1.5.2) does not open its library any more.
After having read about similar problems described in this forum, and after not beeing able to resolve the problem, I finally...
    - backed up the whole machine
    - reinstalled system (10.4.9) including all system updates (clean install, formatting HD)
    - re-installed APERTURE from original DVD
    - ran updater to arrive to APERTURE 1.5.2
    - re-installed new Prokit File in System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ProKit.framework/Versions/A/Prokit, got the file here: http://www.itsadirtyword.com/downloads/ProKit.zip, from thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=892893&tstart=30
    - opened Aperture.
Till here all OK. Aperture opens and shows a vergin project, asking if I wish to import sample project.
Now I wish to get my photographs back from the backup file.
I give the command "rebuild from backup" (maybe in english it's different, I do have a german version of APERTURE installed, there it is called "Bibliothek wiederherstellen").
Now APERTURE starts (and shows me) the import process, counting down around 80.000 files (there are not THAT many photographs, I guess it includes all the preview-files). This takes quite a while. When finished, it says: "Import was OK, now you have to re-start the program". No choice is given, I just push the restart button, APERTURE quits, launches again- but it does not open the project file. Just the startup screen is seen, and then the menu- but no window.
If I check for the Aperture Library.aplibrary file, it is there, in the correct folder, now 42 GB, which corresponds to the size of the backup file.
I do not have a chance to open it, however.
Even if I Quit the program, throw away com.apple.Aperture.plist (from >Library>Preferences) and re-start it again, it won't open the Library File. Just nothing comes.
Throwing the Aperture Library.aplibrary file, it causes APERTURE to create a new one upon start-up. If I then re-import the backup file, the same thing will happen again: Once the re-import finished, it will not open the project window any more.
I absolutely NEED to access these photographs. Please help.
    Thank you,
    Markus

Thank you so much, David, for your efforts!
I had tried this, but no result.
As APERTURE worked as soon as I had thrown the BIG library (the program just created a virgin library, which worked when importing pictures), I presumed the problem was the library file.
Even if I get upset that this kind of data base file is not bullet-proof, storing thousands of pictures which have enormous value (and where even the BACKUP file seemed to be corrupted, as the problem came up restoring the backup file!), I started from the idea that the problem was this library file.
    So, I...
    - made APERTURE create a virgin library.
    - opened the old (corrupted?) library file by option-clicking on the file and clicking onto "Show Packet Content".
    - I IMPORTED the different "xxx.approject"-files by hand into the new library.
This took me a quite while, but now it seems the system is up again.
Some photographs (shot in Nikon RAW format) show as "not supported file", I have to see how to deal with this, and if for example by exporting them I can save something.
I now made a backup, creating a new vault, and it worked with no error messages. Also controlling the vault file, everything seems to be there.
So, "somehow" all is saved, even if the real problem has not been found. This is why I will not set the flag on "Answered question".
As I mentioned before, I think that this data base handling of APERTURE has to be (nearly) 100% safe, as Mac OSX is.
It just HAS to work, no chance to arrive to "corrupted files" or something like this.
Apple: Build in automatic database repairings, make sure the backup files ARE ok (mine was not, it seems), do whatever is necessary for not leaving any possibility for "inconsistent files" or stuff like that.
If these things just CAN (and do) happen, the software is not worth a penny.
The photographs just HAVE to be in a secure place, like money brought to bank just HAS to be safe there. If even the BACKUP file is corrupted, WHERE is the security for my photographs?
Apple, if you wish to play in the "professional filed", this just HAS to work. No other choice.
Thanks again David for your efforts!

  • Windows 8 and PSE7 and PSE11 how to add actions

I changed over to Windows 8.  PSE 7 downloaded and opens up just fine.  I cannot seem to find any info on how to add actions to PSE7.  Windows 8 is not setup like 7.  There is no start button.  You cannot input programdata to find the hidden files.  I downloaded PSE11 trial version thinking it was just PSE 7..........same thing, downloaded no problem, opens up but how do you add actions?   I used many actions to resize the file, sharpen, and a few makeover actions by Florabella.  I would love to be able to use those again.   Thank you.

You probably need to do some study on how Microsoft expect Windows 8 to be used, especially if you don't have a touch screen.
    Two thoughts
    1. If you don't have a touch screen, Adobe Reader Touch may not be the best choice. It is much more limited than the regular Adobe Reader. Did you pick it for a reason, or just because Microsoft encouraged you into their App Store?
    2. Try a right click, sometimes seems to substitute for a touch off the edge. I know you can't just use the mouse as if it were touch.

  • After migrating from iPhoto: Aperture library 81GB and iPhoto Library 17GB

I Have ~10K images almost all .jpgs. I just completed the "rebuild from masters" command after experimenting with Aperture for a while. I was surprised to find that my Aperture Library was 81GB and my remaining iPhoto library was 17GB. First of all I selected "move" from the "rebuild from masters" command so I thought my iPhoto Library would just disappear. When I open iPhoto all my pictures are still there. So why the large library size difference?
    -thanks

How long since, you installed Aperture 3? You may need to leave the machine running for quite a while before things start to settle down. Sounds like you may be short of RAM and or a library with a lot of faces. Allan

  • I'm organising my Aperture library today and I'm going to go through my photos folder, import the images to Aperture and then delete the original folders. Just curious if deleting the source folders is a big no-no or not.

Topic title basically sums it up.

Alright. For my case was, my source files are inside the Document folders. Since importing the pictures into Aperture, deleting the source files/folders did not cause any problems with Aperture.
Whether it is a good idea or would depend on how comforatble you are with the idea in the first place. On one hand you can save up precious hard disk space, while on the other if the Aperture library gets corrupted, you might lose everything. Of course, having a backup of the Aperture library helps, as well as a time machine backup of it. On top of that you can also have an Aperture Vault to backup the library to a external drive.
In summary i think a reasonlable backup plan is just as important regardless of whether or not the source file is in which location. For my case, i only have the Aperture library as all of my source. A time machine backs up everything including my library, in addition to that, i also use Aperture Vault to back up to another external drive just in case.

  • Importing from iPhoto Library - referenced or managed?

I'm moving my entire iPhoto library into Aperture. Is it better to reference them in place (i.e. keep the iPhoto library where it is) or import them as managed files? What are the pros and cons of each? Thanks for your help.

The images in iPhoto are already saved to your internal drive. If you have a reason to continue to maintain an iPhoto library then there is no problem to keep them where they are. If you choose to import the images into Aperture you can if you choose move them off to an external drive and have them referenced. You could also have them managed by Aperture and if you do so, then the Vault will provide you backup for your masters (on an external drive). I continued to use iPhoto because my macbook wouldn't support Aperture and when returned home, I moved the images to Aperture. This problem has been solved by purchasing a Macbook Pro.
    Good luck,
    Jeff

  • Show and Share: How to add thumbnail for uploaded by URL

    Hi all,
I upload video by URL in Show and Share. Can I manually add thumbnail for video? and how to?
    Thank you very much.
    Bintasan Mokkamakkul

As per docs, the default behavior for show and share is to assign a
thumbnail based on the length of the video:
    Check out:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_3/showandshare/user/guide/edit-delete.html#wp1079137
TABLE:  Please match the # for each section:
    If your video is ...
    1. less than 3 seconds long
    2. Between 3 and 8 seconds long
    3. 8 seconds or longer
It uses this frame for the thumbnail...
    1. 0 seconds
    2. 4 seconds
    3. 8 seconds
If you have a video that is longer than 8 seconds, but the title shot only lasts for 5 seconds, the automatically generated thumbnail may not contain your video title. Or, if you recorded a message, the system may have captured an unflattering facial expression for the thumbnail. Use this procedure to correct the situation.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_3/showandshare/user/guide/edit-delete.html#wp1079137
The procedure to modify the thumbnail is listed in the link above. You
need to go to your uploaded videos and click "Edit Video" then follow
the instructions above to move the slider where you want the thumbnail
    to be.
Please keep in mind that video editing is only possible for some video
    formats:
Table 6-1 Video Format Editing Support
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_3/showandshare/user/guide/edit-delete.html#wp1080725
    I hope this helps!
    Cheers!

  • 2 4404's and WCS how to add an addition 4404

We have two 4404's and WCS. The 4404's are almost maxed out. We have an addition 4404 which we would like to add to the group of 4404's. What is the best way to do this?
    Thanks

If both on-line 4404 share the same configs (particulary the SSID and other stuffs) then copy the config into the new one (make sure the new one is off-line so IP addresses won't clash).
Change the IP addresses of the new 4404.
    Add into WCS.

  • How do I import images created in earlier versions of Aperture and saved to DVD as an Aperture library into Aperture 3.2.1?

When I insert the DVD into my MacPro the disk appears as though it is blank, with the little 'burn' icon in the top right
When I insert the DVD into my macbook it shows the full Aperture library structure and when I allow file sharing between the machines the MacPro can also recognises the files
I suspect I am making a basic error somewhere as the images are clearly all there.  This doesnt just occur for one DVD, I have dozens that are all perfroming in the same way when I try to import files created in an earlier version of Aperture back into the version I am now using, 3.2.1
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    Reiss.

To get the old library into Aperture it will need to be upgrade. To do this you will need to copy the library off the DVD onto our HD and then open Aperture on this library. Aperture should then upgrade the library to the latest version.
