Aperture library restored from vault different size to original?

Hi, I tried to share an Aperture library between two user accounts and it's messed up the permissions such that I can't use it in either account.
Shortly before trying to do this I updated the Aperture vault I keep on an external USB drive.
I've been unable to restore the permissions on the original library so I put it in another folder and asked Aperture to restore from my up to date vault.
After some time Aperture restored it's library from the vault I keep on the external drive but it's about 4GB smaller. The original aperture lib with incorrect permissions is 100.54GB and the new lib is 96.5GB.
As far as I can tell the library that has been created from the vault is up to date, so why has it shrunk by 4GB? Has the process of rewriting it in one go saved it to the disk more efficiently?
Regards,
Dave.

The vault is smaller as it doesn't store thumbnails or previews, both of which take up a noticeable amount of space.
When you use the restored library, I'd expect the thumbnails will get automatically rebuilt. The previews may as well, so eventually it will fluff back up.

  • Why are my masters offline in aperture after restore from vault (not referenced)

I really hope someone can help as I am at my whits end!
I recently had to do a clean install of lion and so dutifly backed up my Aperture 3 library to a vault. 100% of my library was managed and I have never referenced files and always avoided it.
I then restored the aperture library from the vault.
When the new library opens all the files and project organisation is there, but quite a few images are showing as offline.
I have noticed that the number of offline images is going up by the minute. Something is changing the state of the images.
I have checked inside the vault and all the masters are there, but for some reason aperture things they are missing. When selecting the "offline" images and then consolidate masters it gives me the alert that there are no referenced files!
I have tried repairing and then rebuilding the database but this has no effect.
Does anyone know whats going on or how I can recover the situation?
I really do look forward to some help from you guys.
    Many Thanks.
    Brad

    It seems so Puzzling Shutter.
I have the Aperture Library and the Vault both on the internal hard drive.
I prepared the vault yesterday and according to aperture it was up to date (updated it several times to make sure)
My vault was on an external hard drive and I copied it to the mac before restoring.
Once I restored. The library is the same size as the vault.
When I use the meta search bar in aperture and select show offline images it shows 144 but each time i come out of the all photos view and go back in this number creeps up!
When I then go and check the vault (on the mac) and the library, the file arent there either but the size of the library and vault hasnt gone down.
Do you think it could be because I copied the vault to the mac before restoring from it. Do you think I should try restoring from the vault as it is on the hard drive?
    I really appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    Brad

  • Cannot restore from vault...

This is driving me crazy! Here's the deal...
    - LaCie 250GB Firewire 800 (permissions & disk verified/repaired)
This disk contains my Aperture 1.5 Vault (Verified size, and it does still contain all of my data)
    • I backed up my Aperture Library to my Vault on the LaCie.
    • I did an erase and install on my startup disk.
    • I re-installed Aperture 1.1, and then ran software update to get it back to 1.5
    • I open Aperture 1.5 which is now empty, of course because it has a new library file
    • I go down to the bottom to select "Restore from Vault..."
    It's grey'd out.
    • I tried double-clicking on the Vault, and it just opens up Aperture
    • I tried dragging the Vault onto the Aperture icon. It opens Aperture, but still does not restore my library.
    • I did a show package contents on the Vault file, and looked through everything. It's all still there.
    • I even tried reverting back to version 1.1, but it still didn't work.
I am at my wits' end, and I have no idea how to get this resolved. Someone please help me out.
    Thank you.

  • Restored from Vault - extra images appear?

    First some background:
I was having stability problems with 1.5 so I decided to back it out.
I backed up the app and library and then deleted them.
I installed all the various versions till I was back up to 1.1.2.
Then I restored a vault that I had updated just prior to my 1.5 upgrade. (So the vault was completely up to date)
After the restore was finished I noticed images showing grey boxes insead of thumbnails. (Although the thumbnails would rebuild when I selected the image)
I switched to the Library "All Images" view to see if this was true of all images where I noticed my problem.
    Problem:
    - There are a bunch of JPG images named FILENAME - Version 2 that show up in the "All Images" view. These images appear to be the .JPG sidecars that got imported with my .NEFs when I imported a folder of images. However, before I could have sworn that the .JPG that corresponded to a .NEF did not show up in Aperture.
The .JPGs don't appear in the album view (Which is where the .NEF+.JPG's were originally imported into).
Is there anyway I can prevent the restore from vault from creating these new versions of the .JPG's?
Aperture also won't even load some of these .JPG's. It only loads the embedded thumbnail and "Loading..." stays on the screen. Not sure why, because preview loads them just fine. I don't think I care about this part since I don't want them.

Apparently no one cares, but I figured it out myself.
    It's a bug with Aperture
The Vault does not restore correctly if it contains images that had both a Master Raw and Master JPEG.
If you try to restore a vault that has images that were imported with both a raw file and a jpeg file the restore will create multiple versions of the image. One for the raw file and one for the jpeg instead of only having one image that contains both the master raw file and master jpeg.
    To reproduce:
    - Import a folder of images that contains pictures that had both a raw image and a jpeg.
    For instance:
    DSC_2428.NEF
    DSC_2428.jpg
    - Take a note of how many images are in your library.
    - Create a vault
    - Update the vault so that it contains all the pictures.
    - Go to the File menu and select Vault->Restore Library...
    - Select the Vault that you just created.
    - Continue the vault restore process until it has completed.
    - Now look at your Aperture library. You will see that you have twice the number of files as the jpeg's will show up as additional files with "- Version 2" after the filename.

  • How can I get my Aperture library back from the Photos application?

As stated above, How can I get my Aperture library back from the Photos application?  I'm not a fan of Photos right now and haven't used iPhoto in years, so that wasn't a loss... I didn't realize when I gave Photo's access to my Aperture library, I was going to lose it...

  • How do i move aperture library to from MBP external drive

Perhaps I am not searching properly, but was unable to bring up a 2011 answer to this question. Does anyone have more current help than 2011?

Thank you, léonie, for your extensive help. I do not wish to impose on you, but have answered the first part of your response below. If you                      were to continue helping, I would appreciate that greatly. I also hope continuing the conversation within the community this way is ok. If not please advise.

“What exactly is the mess now? I do not want to contribute to it inadvertently by missing details.”
I meant that, the original library remained on my MBP and the copied library was on my new dedicated external drive. My original problem of only 50 gigs on my MBP meant the beach ball was quite active.
I set the library from within aperture to the file on my new dedicated external drive. Images I looked at appeared and all functioned well but slowly.
Since I had a vault set, had a clone of my original MBP hard drive from before the library copy and a time machine backup to another dedicated hard drive, I sent the original iMovie library to trash and deleted it.
I then reindexed spotlight and the MPB worked much faster, reflecting some 150 gigs available much better than 50 from before.
    Is this summary correct?
My external drive was formatted correctly. I did user finder to move my "iPhoto" library from my mac to my external drive.
I did redirect Aperture to the external drive. but I see that the original library remains on my mac. (Which, as I mentioned above, with much care and several types of backup, I trashed the original file, which was on my MBP).
So you could open your library on the external drive?  Is it working correctly? Yes
Are you able to open all images? Yes, based on a sampling of images.
Is your library referenced or not?  That means, did you import your images into Aperture or photo with the "Import Settings" set to "Store Files: In the Aperture Library"?
I am not sure from where you got the graphic labeled “Aperture Library”. My Aperture version is 3.5.1.
When I go to Aperture preferences and select import, this is what I see:
In advanced this is what I see:
I think the difference is in my version.
Continuing, when I look at iPhoto, it references the new library on my external drive. Here’s that screen shot.
So,  the Aperture setting says it is currently set to use iphoto for camera imports and iPhoto is set to use the new external drive’s library. I am not sure how file imports will be affected, but assume it will be the same. Is that correct?
Any comments up to this point?
I will now try the smart album comment.

  • Aperture Library missing from Drive

So, I have about a 240GB Aperture Library.  I went to open Aperture today to set up a new vault, but Aperture said it could not find my library.  I went to locate it on the appropriate drive, but alas, the entire library was missing.  The drive is showing that 240 GB are still being used, but nothing is showing up.
Anyone have any idea how I may be able to find/recover my library from this drive?

Yes, I checked in the trash.  Nothing there.
I tried both Disk Utility and Drive Genius 3.  Disk Utility told me I had errors in the drove, but when I went to repair it, it gave me a message that the repair could not be completed because the drive could not be unmounted.
Based off of the amount of disk space that is used, it APPEARS as if the data is still there, but for some reason, it just doesn't show up.
I don't intend to use the drive for anything.  I just want to get my photos off of it and get rid of it

  • How to email Aperture library photos from iPhoto

Want to use Aperture library photos (which I can easily view from iPhoto 11) in the beautiful email systems of iPhoto. When I select the Aperture library photos and select Share-email nothing happens, then the Share-email menu becomes grayed out. According to the help available all aperture library shots are fully available for use in iPhoto 11. Any suggestions? Thanks

You hav to move the photos from Aperture to iPhoto to do this.
    1. Using the Media Browser you can drag from the browser to the iPhoto Window - this yields the Aperture Previews
    2. Export from Aperture to the Finder, import to iPhoto.
That said if you use Apple's Mail.app you can
A: Take advantage of the Stationery feature, which has more templates than iPhoto, more varied thatn iPhoto and others can be downloaded
B: It's a full mail application, with an outbox and so on
C: You can email from Aperture, and so avoid this loop into iPhoto.

  • Can I copy certain aperture library files from the finder?

    Hello,
I have an older library, that I updated to the current Aperture, and recently froze from bad media.  I think it was a bunch of videos in one of the events.  Anyways, I want to copy some of the photos from a event in the old library to a new working library.  Can I do this from finder?  I tried exporting and it froze, leaving the photo export in some limbo state...

Do you also have iPhoto 9.5.1? If you open your Aperture library in iPhoto you can use "File > Reveal in FInder > Original File" to show you the original image file inside the library. Then you can copy it easily to a new location.
If you do not have iPhoto, you can reveal the original photos by ctrl-clicking the Aperture library and using the command "Show Package Contents".  Your images are in the Masters folder, organized by the year, month, day of importing them.
But be careful, when browsing these folders. Only copy, don't move.

  • Aperture library copy vs vault

    Hi,
sorry if this is redundant, but I couldn't locate the clear answer to this seemingly basic question:
if using a referenced library, what is the major difference/advantage of creating a vault versus a simple drag & drop copy of the aperture library onto an external HD?
    Thanks,
    Mike

The Finder is the strongest Mac app. It has been being tested by every Mac user and has had resources allocated to improving its stability since Mac day one. And, all of us use the Finder constantly so we are very conversant with appropriate usage. IMO if one has the discipline to go to the desktop and manually multiple backup using the Finder that is the surest kind of backup.
Personally I prefer manual non-incremental backups. It can be done with forethought after one is comfortable that everything is well with whatever it is that is being backing up.
I keep old iterations of the backup in the event that there is a critical flaw in what is being backed up. E.g. I built a Filemaker images database for an antique store. The db user was given admin control of the db against my recommendation, changed the password at some point, and then left town. Old db copies allowed me to go back to the last backup made before the password change and start over with a new user.
Drag-and-drop is good for Referenced-Masters folks in particular because Masters are not backed up by the Vault process when using a Referenced-Masters Library, so the users need to separately be backing up Masters anyway.
Most important however is to get the backup done however one does it. Other techniques like Vaults, Time Machine, etc. may assist folks who have difficulty maintaining the discipline to properly drag-and-drop.

  • Do IOS restriction settings prevent restoring from a different backup

Can a child restore their iPad from their own backup and override restrictions set in place?

No, they could not - unless they have a backup that doesn't have the restrictions passcode in it. As Mr Jobs said, if they restore from a backup that contains the passcode, they will simply be reinstalling the passcode onto the device again.
They can restore the device as new and that will remove the restrictions passcode. That is what you have to do if you can't remember the restrictions passcode and you need to get into the settings again

  • Can one Aperture library draw from two iCloud streams?

I have successfully configured Aperture to pull from the user's iCloud photostream.  I'd also like it to pull photos from the photo streams of my children.  I can add their iCloud accounts in System Preferences, but it only presents me with the options to use their address book, calendar, and mail.  Not the photostream.
Anyone know how to do this, or work around it?  I'd love for the photos to stream in as they do for the primary account.
    Thanks

    only from one Apple-ID possible.

  • Any way to retain secure WiFi passwords after a restore from a different backup?

My work's IT dept. loaded on some secure WiFi passwords onto my new work-issued iPad 4 -- when I'm at a site with WiFi, it should connect even though I don't know the passwords.
I have an older iPad that is configured just how I like it.  I know that I can restore from old iPad to new iPad and duplicate those apps and configurations.  However, I believe I will lose the private passwords that IT entered for me.  I have read that I can maintain the passwords if I do an encrypted backup, but that will only help with what I've got now.  The new iPad is just at the stock config.  If I do an encrypted backup of it, then restore from old iPad, I'll still lose my passwords.  If I restore from the new iPad with the encrypted passwords, I'll be back to my stock setup.  I can't have both, right?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure they will only enter them on work-issued devices.  The only issue on the config is that I basically wanted to put a clone of the old one on the new one.  Lots of apps and tweaks that I'd rather not have to do all over again.  I think I'm stuck.

  • Two Vaults - different sizes

I am puzzled by my vault sizes - I am a backup freak and use a second vault on an external drive (Apple format) for a backup of my primary vault. I updated my vaults yesterday but noticed the size and "date modified" are different yet I can't seem to update the vault on the external drive. If I select the vault on the external drive and click "update vault" I get a popup which says "your vaults are already up to date." If I check the Get Info on the two vaults after the update, both the size and "date modified" are different which concerns me since I use the external drive for backup of both the original Raw files (folders) and the vault. Obviously I can delete the vault on the external drive then recreate it but this seems to defeat the purpose of a simple backup. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi kazjaz,
The 931.5 GB means the available space on your hard drive.   Since the figure is the same for both vaults, that seems odd to me.
I would suggest creating a new vault on the external hard drive and deleting these.
If you are using Time Machine, the original libraries, if they are on your internal drive, will be backed up as well.
Page 399 of the Aperture User Guide may give you a better understanding of this important process:

    I hope this information helps!

  • After restore from 3 different media, all I get is "please install an operating system."

The hard drive quit in my stepson's notebook. I bought a new one, installed it. I've tried to re-install Windows 8 from the USB stick he created when he got it. Didn't work. I tried from another USB stick restore image from an identical model, didn't work. I PAID for the DVD recovery set from HP... didn't work. I tried a Win 10 DVD... didn't work. All have the same problem, When the install is "finished", every time I get an error message saying "Please install an operating system" on what should be the first boot up.  After hours and hours of this crap I'm just about ready to throw the **bleep** thing away. There is no reason for this to happen, none. The only thing different is the size of the hard drive, it's 500GB instead of the original 350.  Extremely frustrated and hoping for some insight, Ken

    Welcome Blue.
You can clone the drive and change the product key.
You must make sure that they both have the same version of Windows COA's.
After you have the cloned drive booted go to START then COMPUTER then SYSTEM PROPERTIES.
At the bottom of SYSTEM PROPERTIES you will see CHANGE PRODUCT KEY.
Click on it and put the product key in that is on the bottom of that laptop.
