Aperture locks up on import/export after Mavericks

Since I upgraded to Mavericks and the corresponding version of Aperture, I have gotten persistent Aperture lockups. When I say "lockups" I mean the spinning beachball of death, and I have to force quit the "not responding" Aperture.
I've tried command-option launching Aperture and repairing or rebuilding the database.
I've tried safe booting, and creating a new user and a "clean" account.
Importing: I can import files from my camera's memory card. However, if I try to select a folder of images on my desktop, it locks up. The folder contains nothing but JPEGs.
Exporting: I've been able to export images. I've had lockups when trying to export MOVs. I also had a lockup when trying to "consolidate originals" so I could migrate all of my images out of Aperture and into Lightroom.
I have tried various search terms in Google to see if this is a known problem but haven't found anything that seems to be import/export specific, or that can't be fixed with a database rebuild.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Barring any solutions to this problem, my workaround was as follows:
Open Aperture Library via "View Package Contents" in Finder
Pull all of my files out.
Use Lightroom instead
I lost all of my albums and project organization, and Aperture adjustments of course, but at least I have my photos back.

  • Problem of Data Import/Export after migration of Oracle DB 9i to 10g

We have encountered the following problem after the migration of Oracle DB 9i to 10g R1 and ESRI ArcSDE 8.3 to 9.1.
In our development server, a view was created by joining of one feature class (point feature), two attribute tables and one F table. We have to perform a process to export all the features in that particular view from the development server and then import them to the production server. In total, there should be about 60,000 points.
Form our past experience (using Oracle DB 9i and ESRI ArcSDE 8.3); we spent about 15-20 minutes to complete the import-export procedure. However, after the system migration, the speed of the import-export procedures is extremely slow, which is talking about 2 hours for ONLY EXPORTING 5MB data.
We would like to seek advice in solving the above problems. THANKS!

Try to delete old stats, then gather new stats on the schema and try the export again.

Sounds like you're using an obsolete version of the software. What version is it?

  • Aperture locks up when Exporting Versions

After upgrading from 2.1.2 to 2.1.3, whenever I export versions Aperture locks up until the export completes and I cannot do anything in the meantime. Sometimes this is accompanied by the SPOD and sometimes not. Also, the time taken to export varies greatly, by up to a factor of 3.
In effect, all these problems mean that I don't have background processing which was one of the big improvements of v2.1.
    Regards,
    Terry

I'm having the very same problem. This is bad news.  I upgraded to Mavericks last week, and then had to update Aperture.  Now it says my 400+GB library has to update, and then at the end it won't complete.  I've done this with a three months older copy of the library.
Apple, you need to figure this out--I'm a working professional and now I don't have access to 4-5 years worth of work--this is serious.  My library appears to be corrupted.

  • I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialog box so large I can't get to the eject card button.   I have to force quit Aperture.  How do I fix?

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialogue box so large that I can't see the eject card button.  Consequently, I can't get rid of the dialogue box without having to do a force quit on Aperture.  How do I fix?

I can drag the dialog box, but I can't move it up far enough to get to the eject card button.  The dialogue box contains all the jpeg Numbers I am trying to upload.  It has never done that before.  It used to be just a smal dialogue box with no jpeg numbers in it.
It is even difficult to get to the Finder with the Dialague box is open.  I have to force quit aperture.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Best export format for importing into After Effects or even back into Premiere

Please look at this video, work in progress.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49_wbdKALQk
The opening, featuring a ribbon of videos, was created in After Effects, using Digieffects Freeform.
The  issue is the poor quality of the videos that are featured in the  opening -- compared to the high quality of videos from the original Premiere  project., which you can see at the end of the clip.
To create the After Effects project, I exported a series of video clips from Premiere  to mp4.
Then I imported them into AfterEffects.
The bottom line, and the purpose of this question, is I am thinking that  MP4 was not the best choice for the Adobe Premiere export.
What  is the best format to export video from in Premiere Pro CS5 to import  into after effects, or to import into any other editing program,  incuding importing right back into Adobe Premiere, if that is eever  needed.
    AVI?
    MOV
    MP4
And any other settings that will result with the highest qualiity videos for importing.
    Thanks

Okay, here's where I stand at this point regarding exporting and/or dynamic linking between AfterEffects and Premiere.
I'm in After Effects.  I create a composition I like.  So I first tried the old fashioned way. I exported it into a MOV file with the animation preset. Millions of colors.  Same frame rate as my Premiere project, which also uses MOV files with no problem.
Howver when I import the MOV file created by After effects, the NEW MOV file section of the premier project plays sluggish.  And it also causes the videos that follow to play sluggish.   And they are all MOV files at the same frame rate.
The same thing happens when I do a dynamic link between the two projects.  A sluggish response starting with the After Effects dynamic link and affecting the MOV video files that follow.
It's a very short After Effects composition.  About 3 second slong.
I have a very powerful computer built especially for CS5 and premiere --so that should not be an issue -- recently was in the top ten of the benchmark list.
Up to this point my video files have played perfectly layer upon layer with no problems.
Is there something I am not considering?
    Thanks.

  • Colours trouble with a psd file after import/export through Lightroom 4

I'm working with CS5, and I just bought LR4. I took a psd file (in Adobe 98 space) and I imported it in LR 4, and the exported as psd file in Adobe 98 colour space. Both files, the original one and the other after import/export, are quite different. The saturation of the res is not the same... When I repeat this experinece with a psd file in sRGB or in Prophoto, I have no difference betwwen both files.
I then conclude that LR doesn't recognize the adobe 98 pprofile of my psd file.
Is that normal, have you tried this experience, is there a bug in LR or a bug in the way, I proceed?
    Best regards

When you import there is an Advanced button in one of the dialogs. Click that and you will be able to Paginate against chosen styles. That will break your document into topics.

  • Where is the AirPort Express/Extreme Config file import and export after the latest update (version 6.0 / 7.6.1)?

Before the recent update I was able to export the configs of my AirPort Express and Extreme for later import if needed. It is not so important for the Extreme as it stays at home, but my Express has several configs saved as it is used in various locations and at times I need to change the config from home use to travel use. I am unable to see how this is now accomplished within the new update (version 6.0). Both of the AirPort devices are on verison 7.6.1. Thanks

I found it, you have to have the edit selection made then the import/export option becomes available.

  • How to Delete imported JPEGS after matching RAW files are imported as masters

Using a 5D Mark III and shoot JPEG (SD) and RAW (CF).
Aperture 3.5.1, using a managed library
Perviously, using a 7D so new to shooting JPEG and RAWs from an aperture Aperture workflow standpoint.
I know that i can import the JPEGs > delete images that do not make the cut > then import the matching RAW files in the import dialogue that correspond to the JPEGs in the Aperture Library.
I use the RAW files as my Camera Master images and once the RAW files are imported, the smaller resolution JPEGs are no longer needed or viewed in my normal edit workflow.  I only need the JPEGs to quickly go through the images to find out which RAW files i need to import at a later time to increase the speed of import > edit > deliver.
    My Assumptions:
    1.  Logic would lead me to believe that after import the user should see a stack like image representation with whatever file type is considered Master to be on top and the viewable secondary file type on the bottom.  clicking on the image stack should allow you to see both file types as you would normally see with image stacks with the same files types.  This is not the case...  What am i missing here?
    2.  Logic again would lead me to believe that when i have the ability to delete one of the 2 image types as i do not need both in the end.  After the import process is complete and RAWs are backed up, I want to delete the JPEG files as they are just taking up more space on my DAS drive array...  There is no need to keep a duplicate of every file in both JPEG and RAW format.  This is not the case as when i delete the JPEG or RAW, both files formats are deleted simultaneously.  What am i missing here?
    Problems: (correspond to Assumptions above)
    1.  I do not seem to have access to both images (JPEG & RAW) in a stack where i can expand and close the stack to see both?  It seems like i only have access to the image type i have selected as Master?  This seems counter intuitive to what the workflow should be as why would aperture 'lock the secondary file types away' so you can't easily view both file types as the same time for comparison?
2a.  Reality seems to be that i do not have access to the JPEG and RAW image files.  I can only see one at a time by selecting the images and choosing 'make JPEG master’ and then respectively... 'make RAW master', but you can't see both at the same time for file comparison.
2b.  Also, I can't find a way to delete the JPEG images after the RAW files have been imported.  I would presume most professional photographers shoot RAW and do not shoot JPEG as their camera master or editing master images.  I do not understand why aperture has captured both as a pair in the library that does not allow me to delete the JPEG (in this case) as i have selected the RAW as my master.
If someone can please help...  The function seems like either i am missing something obvious or that the implemented function of using RAW + JPEGs files for import is broken from a real world workflow standpoint.

    leonie...
thank you for clearing that up for me.
I think that at this point it is silly to use the JPEG+RAW import functionality as it seems that it takes longer to do the above steps than to just import only the RAW files and press on from there.
I seems what i have done in the past of only importing the RAW files and then using the quick preview functionality to reduce image load times is the best thing in can come up with without keeping 'duplicates' in the database.
That really baffels me that there is no built in functionality to remove the JPEG from a RAW+JPEG pair and i wonder how the real world photographers who help Apple test and implement software to solve real world workflow problems thought the JPEG+RAW import was going to be used.
I do understand that i can use a smaller JPEG file size to reduce the bloat of the database, but used over hundreds of thousands of images is certainly going to make a dent in my total aperture database size and therefore storage needs down the road.
If you have any other workflow thoughts, or know of a 3rd party plugin/ etc... to fix this obvious shortcoming then i am all ears..
thank you again Leonie and have a great week

  • Multitrack session import/export

So I've been using audition since it was CoolEdit back in the 90s, and nowadays I work in film. I was excited about the release of CS5 and downloaded a trial as soon as possible, but I'm quite disappointed. why? It's still impossible to move multitrack sessions around.
Quick recap of multitrack audio capabilities in Adobe products...
Audition loads/saves .ses and XML files, with the latter recommended for future compatibility. It doesn't import other XML files.
Soundbooth only saves stereo files, but can load/export the ASND format (new in CS3/4?) to embed multitrack info (which can then be reopened and edited in SB).
Premiere exports OMF and its successor AAF (popular multitrack project exchange formats) and imports the ASND format. It imports and export final Cut XML files, but not Audition XML files.
Premiere also lets you select any clip and open it for editing in Soundbooth or Audition. That's clip, singular. Select two audio clips and the option is greyed out.
Neither Bridge nor Dynamic link allow multitrack audio sharing.
Do you see the problem here? If you have a pile of multitrack audio clips in Premiere (like you would after editing a film) there is no way to get your audio timeline information, with many tracks and many clips, from Premiere into Audition or its little brother, Soundbooth
    This is, frankly, a disaster.
Think about it: audition has by far the best forensic, analysis and editing tools of any DAW. But anyone using Premiere who needs to do fine-grained audio editing - because although Premiere is audio-friendly, it has its limits - is forced to export to something like OMF or AAF and then  bring into Pro Tools (spit). You can create audio in Premiere and export it as audio tracks (with blank space) to Soundbooth, from where you can throw it back and forth between SB and Premiere to your heart's content.
But if you're editing a film (not a music video) then there is no way you would want to put the audio together in Audition or Soundbooth first, because 90% of the time it will be following the picture. You can get individual clips out of Premiere and into the others...but only one at a time, which defeats the entire purpose of post sound editing, where you are trying to blend together multiple clips from different takes. And even though Premiere offers multiple options for exporting all the clip information and even volume/pan and plugin data to standard platform independent multitrack formats, Adobe's audio tools can't read any of those files.
When is Adobe going to fix this? I'm sorry to say that I'm becoming embarrassed to tell people I prefer Audition, because everyone in the business knows it's hopeless for multitrack portability.
And I'm not saying this to be selfish - this problem is really, really hurting Adobe's sales of both Audition and Premiere. Avid owns Digidesign, maker of Pro Tools. I hate both, but from a logistic standpoint they're a great combination, it's pretty easy to get stuff out of Avid into PT, and of course both of them have 'tradition' on their side. Apple has Final Cut, and Soundtrack Pro (rather like Soundbooth) or Logic, for those who want more. I don't care for this platform either, but it's a viable solution. And here's Adobe, with a decent lightweight audio editor in Soundbooth and the best analytical/forensic audio tool - which is exactly what's needed for film post - in Audition.
And yet there is no way to get your audio timeline out of Premiere and into either of these tools, nor do either of them load any industry-standard multitrack file formats, nor are they even compatible with each other. I was looking at an Adobe TV episode earlier today where they take a music project from Audition to Soundbooth...by exporting the tracks as individual audio files, which are then added to a brand new Soundbooth project. This is just ridiculous. I mean, if I'm consulting for someone about audio post for a film project or to outfit a studio, how can I possibly recommend Adobe's products? Individually they're great, but in workflow terms, forget it. Anyone who needs to get things done will probably go for Pro Tools, and since Avid and FCP are both more widely used than Premiere they'll probably go for one of those too.
I really can't understand why the audio tools aren't integrated to the same degree as, say, After Effects. Premiere + AE is a winning combo, and yet audio is arguably even more important than color correction or VFX, as almost every film has a soundtrack and audiences are far more intolerant of poor sound than they are of visual shortcomings. Please, please fix this. I live in San Francisco, so I'm not far from Adobe's offices: I will happily donate a day or two of my time, and even supply a waiver of any claim in intellectual property, to answer any and all questions about audio workflow. I think I've learned a few things worth sharing over the course of 10 features and about 50 shorts. It's not a big deal for Adobe to fix.
Message was edited by: Anig Browl to add the following: there is a LOT of stuff I do like about CS5 - Premiere has not gained a ton of new features, but it has had a massive performance overhaul, and the new features that do exist are very useful. The same is true of several other packages - I wouldn't want this to be seen as a 'nothing's ever any good' rant. The sad thing is that it won't reach its full audience because of the inexplicable barrier that remains in place between the NLE and the multitrack audio environment.

I'm glad of these reports, and have been checking out AAT, which has potential. I do have some reservations about it, but this is not the place to critique helpful solutions; I'll limit myself to saying I'm a bit troubled by the obvious dependence on an old UI library and the conversion speeds, which seem slow for a task that is basically text-based (ie metadata manipulation). Look out for a follow up email, Michael, and thanks for your previous reply.
All the same, at bottom this is an Adobe problem - third party conversion utilities shouldn't be needed to move projects between Adobe's own software. It's a shortcoming of the CS4 & 5 suites, in that file-conversion approaches like that of AAT are necessarily destructive and thus preclude dynamic file exchange. I mean, would you buy a new car if the salesman said the fenders fall off above walking speed, but that you could fix the problem with $100 of duct tape?
Suppose, for example, one is polishing audio for a film, but audience tests or the director's opinion mandates a scene be cut, or (worse) lengthened. Making a change in the NLE would require export from Audition to a Premiere-compatible format (probably via AAT to AAF or FCP-XML, but see below), import to Premiere, consistency and compatibility checks, adjustment of the edit timeline as required, and subsequent re-export for conversion by AAT, import to Audition, followed by further compatibility and consistency checking - plus a separate render and media export of the video, since Audition can only handle a single video track.
While both hardware and sanity dictate that it's probably best to manage the project as a batch of single scenes or reels rather than moving an entire feature or TV episode at once, this process is likely to take at least an hour before audio editing can resume. In theory it should only require a few minutes for export, conversion, import, adjustment, re-export, conversion and re-import, but that process offers 6 stages for things to go wrong. Even if everything is usually fine, time-consuming sanity checks are still required, unless you like all-night emergency rescue sessions. In practice, a single small timeline change in the NLE may well be easier to accommodate by manually moving the audio in Audtion, and cross-checking the timecode in both applications.
When I started doing audio for film - back when it was film, and the audio was recorded on DAT or even analog tape - this was the norm and those skills still work. But it undermines the whole point of using metadata and products like Adobe Bridge for version management. This is not the fault of AAT in any way; it's just a fact that when your workflow involves export/import via third-party tools, you have to treat every such iteration as a separate project file and adhere to strict versioning and administration/backup practices even though these would be better performed by the computer. In a perfect world, we'd stick to a scheme whereby the editor locks the movie once and forever, the audio engineer and colorist work their magic on the soundtrack and the picture respectively, and then their efforts are united for the final master. But we don't live in such a world, and clients don't appreciate being told that changes which were easy and swift at an early stage are now either impossible or hugely time-consuming.
This is what I mean when I refer to being embarrassed to say Audition is my favorite editing tool. Most people want Pro Tools, because although it's expensive it's standard and the workflow is predictable. So that's what I end up using on a great many jobs; it's capable for most tasks, I'm good at it, and to be frank I can get paid a bit more for my ability to use it. The sad thing is that I can work better and faster in Audition, where things like the spectral editing, noise fingerprinting, and advanced filtering offer really amazing possibilities...but getting projects in and out of it are a terrible struggle. Soundbooth makes things marginally easier, but only marginally. I can see a possibility of rebuilding an audio timeline from Premiere using Adobe's Javascript Extensions, and then generating an audition-compatible XML file from there...but I can't say it looks like fun
As for exporting to AAF, Premiere CS5 has other problems. Many things can not be exported, like per-clip gain levels (because the Advanced Authoring Format doesn't properly support them, according to Premiere, although the protocol specification appears like it should). In any case, Premiere CS5 has trouble importing AAF; after exporting a short scene using all possible settings (normal, legacy, or normal with audio embedded), attempting to reload the exported file into a blank project causes an instant crash due to a kernel error (the import filter appears to launch a 32-bit process).
In any case, although AAF is still being developed it seems to be moving towards a BWF-style XML format, and most of AMWA's development seems concentrated in that direction. Final Cut XML appears to be the best solution, but this is (obviously) rather sad, and furthermore Premiere does not strip invalid data (eg >6.02dB gain, which Premiere clamps at +6 on import) from FCP-originated projects, but re-exports it - not an altogether bad thing for working with FCP partners, but not exactly optimal either.

  • Use Aperture to geotag photos, then export

I am using my iPhone to track my location when I take pictures with my digital camera. The app on my iPhone produces a .gpx file, and Aperture uses it to geotag my photos. These geotags appear in Aperture and iPhoto. So far so good!
I am also maintaining a Picasa photo library for my wife's Windows PC. I would like to export these geotagged pictures from Aperture or iPhoto so I can import them in to Picasa - but I want to keep the geotag information and not recompress the file. When I export pictures from Aperture, the files come out a different size - too different to merely be the geotag information. I think the picture is being recompressed.
Can I export without recompressing? I think I'm missing something pretty simple!
    Thanks!

    Andreas Yankopolus wrote:
    $ exiftool -geotag trackname.gpx *.ORF
Thanks Andreas! I'm assuming I would put my logger file in the same folder as the pictures, and then navigate to this folder in Terminal before giving the command? I don't know a lot about command line stuff.
    Frank Cagiano wrote:
You keep using this term 'recompressing'  but you've never stated what image format you are importing into Aperture or how you are exporting the images from Aperture.
If you could describe your workflow in some detail including how you are exporting from Aperture and the settings you are using and explain what problems you are having a solution  simpler then those proposed might be available.
Sorry! I am pretty new to this. I am just using the JPEGs my little Canon S100 gives me. This camera actually has a built-in GPS, but it rarely works and if it does it take ages to lock on. My iPhone does a better job, so I am trying out different geotag apps to see if there is one I like. I am planning to upgrade my camera this year, and if I can get the iPhone geotagging working well I have many more choices of camera open to me. I may shoot in raw, but I really don't do much beyond cataloging my pictures to look at them later.

  • Questions on Subviews and Import/Export in Data Modeler v3 EA1.

I have a few questions about the capabilities of Data Modeler v3 EA1:
    1) Is it possible to rename subviews? Would like more meaningful names then Relational_x - Subview_x.
    2) Is it possible to save documents at subview level?
    3) Is it possible to import/export subsets of data?
    4) Having problems importing Erwin 7 .xml file, is there known problems with this import?
    Judy

    Hi Judy,
    1) To rename a subview just right click on it in the browser tree and select "Properties". In the properties dialog change the name and click OK button.
    2) You can save a subview as new Data Modeler design - from the File menu select Export -> To Data Modeling Design. In the newly opened dialog select the subview you want to export and click OK button.
    3) After saving a subview as new design (see answer #2) it can be imported in some other design (File -> Import -> Data Modeler Design).
    4) What kind of problems do you have with import of Erwin 7.* xml file?
