Aperture loses my pictures on import

I have recently migrated from one mac to another, now when I import to aperture it says "items will import to untitled project keep/delete on iphone" then regardless of what I choose nothing appears in the library. Is this a conflict from migration?
Do I need to create a new library? If so whats the cons of running more than one library
Cheers

billy,
Is this a conflict from migration?
How did you migrate over? i.e. transfer your Aperture library?
What is your Aperture version? And your iPhone version?
Is there anything special about the photos you want to import? HDR or something? Can there be unreadable photos or videos in the camera roll?
What are your import settings? Is the "Store files" set to "In the Aperture library"or a flder on your mac? Make sure it is not accidentally "In their current location".
I'd try first to import into a new Aperture library - just for testing. If you can import without problems into the new library, try to fix your current library. Perhaps there are permission problems or the Library needs repairing after migration, see:  Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
If you cannot import at all in any library, try to import from a card on your camera, to see if the iPhone is the problem. If you cannot import at all, try if you can import, when working from adifferent user account. This is to see, if you migrated problematic settings from your old mac to your current account. Then post back with your findings.

  • Any value in exporting iPhoto pictures and importing them into Aperture?

I am moving from iPhoto into Aperture (moving my library again actually) and I know that iPhoto and Aperture can share the iPhoto library once it has been updated but I am wondering if there is any value (or even if it is possible) to export all of the iPhoto pictures and import them into a new Aperture library?  The reason that I'm asking this is that I know there are a lot of duplicates in my iPhoto library and I know that Aperture keeps only the original.  A couple of weeks ago I moved my iPhoto library onto an external LaCie SSD disk to use with my MacBook Pro but unfortunately corrupted that library and have to make the move again.  If there is any value in changing how I'm managing my library I should do it now.
The library corruption was caused by me needing to leave for work and disconnecting the LaCie before Aperture was done sync'ing with my Flickr account.  When I tried to use Aperture the next day it was not able to repair/rebuild or use the iPhoto library at all.  I was unfortunately not backing up the external disk so I lost everything that I had done to clean up the library after the move.  One lesson that I learned was do not automatically sync with Flickr because doing this on an MBP via wireless with an external disk library can add a lot of delay to shutting down Aperture after an MBP wakeup.

Just in case you have not come across these:
Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture

but I am wondering if there is any value (or even if it is possible) to export all of the iPhoto pictures and import them into a new Aperture library?
You can - an it will depend on what you want to achieve, if that will usefull. The way to do this would be by imprting your iPhoto library into an Aperture library using Aperture. But Aperture libraries and iPhoto libraries are now interchangable - both are photo libraries, and you could simply use your iPhoto library in Aperture and be done now.
Some reasons why you would want to turn your iPhoto library into a library recognized as Aperture library by importing it into a new, empty Aperture Library:
As long as the photo library will have the "Kind: iPhoto library", you will have to upgrade both iPhoto and Aperture always to the newest versions, or you will not be able to upgrade to a new library format, when a new release of Aperture comes - say (iPhoto '12 and Aperture 4); you will probably have to buy both new releases to continue working with your iPhoto Library in Aperture.
If the kind of your library is "Kind: iPhoto library", it will appear in the Media Browser in the iPhoto section, not in the Aperture section, even if you are using it as your Aperture library. And before syncing with iTunes you will always have to open the Aperture library in iPhoto to point iTunes to it.
Also, in Aperture you have more control about what will be included in your library - In iPhoto there is no way to specify the size and quality of previews. If you do not want or need previews, or you want smaller previews, or no Faces, it would make sense to recreate your iPhoto library by importing it into a new, empty Aperture Library.
If you have more than one iPhoto Library, you can merge them into one big Aperture library to be able to browse all your images without having to switch between libraries. Aperture works very well with really big libraries. There is no need to split libraries.
The reason that I'm asking this is that I know there are a lot of duplicates in my iPhoto library and I know that Aperture keeps only the original.
That is what I meant by having more control on what will be stored. iPhoto will always store a very high quality preview of your edited version; in Aperture you can decide what the preview size and quality will be. But Previews and originals are not duplicates; they are not the same image.

  • Aperture doesn't see all Pictures for import

I am having problems with Aperture finding photo files for importing. I set the family tree (having tried various routes) for viewing various folders and the images that I know are in the folder, just dont appear!

Have you tried to toggle between folders in the Aperture Import panel? I noticed, that it takes some time for the image files to appear in the Import window.  And Aperture does not seem to refresh the Import Browser window, when you move files around.
    So try the following:
Close the "Import" panel in Aperture.
In the Library Inspector panel make sure, you have a library item selected, that you can import to, not the Trash or something, otherwise the Import window might appear to be empty in AP 3.4.
    Check again the settings.
Then select the folder you want to import from in the Import panel. Wait a moment for the images to appear. If the do not appear, switch to a different folder and then back.
If that still will not show your photos, switch between different "File Types" settings.
If none of this helps, check, if Aperture will see the Desktop or Pictures folder, if you are importing into a different Aperture library.
If even a new library does not help, it may be a problem of corrupted Preferences. Then you probably have a problem with corrupted user preferences.
Remove the Preferences: Remove the Aperture's user preferences from the User Library as described here:
    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
Note:Your User Library is hidden by default in MacOS X 10.7.x or later - to open it in a Finder window use the "Go" menu from the Finder's main menu bar.
Quit Aperture, if it is running. Log off and on again.
Open the user library by using the Finder's "Go > Go to Folder" menu and hold down the options-key, until "Library" appears in the drop down menu. Select it.
In the widow that will open, scroll down to "Preferences"
From the "Preferences" folder  remove "com.apple.Aperture.plist".
Then try to launch Aperture again.
But deleting the "Preferences" file will cause Aperture to forget the preferences settings. Be prepared to have to reset all options you set using the Aperture Preferences panel.

  • Aperture looses contact with masters imported in Library

I working with aperture 3 and since a couple of month aperture loses contact with imported master/pictures. At first I thought it was because i left the originals/masters in my time machine. But recently i imported pictures in my aperture library. Opening aperture now aperture says my pictures are not on line so I can't control my metadata. Please give me some clue or help to tell me what I do wrong

Hi Dick.  Can't say from the information you've provided.  This line, though, gives me fibrillations:

What have you been doing?  Where, exactly, are your Images' Masters stored?  What volume is reported when you right-click an Image with an off-line Master and execute "Show in Finder"?  What path is shown at the top of the dialog when you select an Image with an off-line Master and execute "File→Locate Referenced Master ... "?

Aperture ate my picture files and they are not recoverable.  The guy at the Genius Bar told me to Trash the App, empty Trash, then go to Purchases and reinstall.  But Purchases says it is "Installed" so it does not let me download it again.  HELP!!!!

I typed Aperture into Spotlight and sure enough it did show up.
It looks like it is supposed to be in Apps.
    But it is not there.
So I clicked on the spotlight Aperture and it opened up the App!!!!
But I do not know where it is to move it!
    How can I find it?
While Aperture is running and you are seeing it in the Dock, ctrl-click (or right click) the Dock icon.
You will see a contextual menu. Click on "Options", then select "Show in Finder".
And check the "keep in Dock" mark, so you will not lose it from the Dock.

  • My ipod touch is disabled for 22 million minutes and I want to fix it but I dont want to lose my pictures and everything else. Help please

my ipod touch is disabled for 22 million minutes and I want to fix it but I dont want to lose my pictures and everything else. Help please I dont remember the last time I updated it. Idk I think its been a year in an half since I known about it being disabled. What do I do? Im scared to restore it because I dont want to lose my stuff.

You have to restore and thus erase your iPod. that is how it works.
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

    Yes.
Have you failed to import them to your computer?

Will I lose my pictures if I have to "restore" my iPhone 3?

You should be importing all pics to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

  • If i synch my ipad to a new computer and update to ios5 am i going to lose my pictures?

If I synch my ipad to a new computer and update to ios 5 will i los my pictures.  i know i will lose my music.

Yes for photos that were transferred from your old computer.
You can avoid this for iTunes content by transferring your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer per the instructions included with this link along with transferring other important data you will need or want to access on your new computer such as documents and photos.

  • Aperture crashes when files are imported

I am using the Aperture 3 trial currently, and while it starts up just fine, whenever I try to import my iPhoto library Aperture chugs along for a bit, and then crashes. When I open Aperture again, most of my events are there (as projects) but they are almost all empty. A select few appear to have photos in them. If I try to import again, the same crash happens. If I import folders as projects from my pictures folder, it crashes. If I delete the Aperture library and try to import again with a fresh start, it crashes. Right now I really don't know what to do about this, I want to try Aperture, but I can't very well do that without being able to get my photos into it.
Admittedly, my iPhoto library is rather large (40,000+ photos), but iPhoto can handle this, and I should think Aperture was built for this.
    Thanks for the help!

I am having a very similar problem. I purchased the full version and get the exact same results. I rebuilt my library using iphoto's rebuild tools and the crash still occurs. I have rebuilt the library using iphoto library manager and the crash still occurs. I am frustrated that I spent 200 dollars and I am unable to import my iPhoto library. Any help would be great.

  • Aperture 3.2.1 not importing all photos from card reader

Aperture is not importing all photos from the card reader, i tried importing 720 photos and it was only seeing 480 photos, the card reader stopped reading, aperture was saying "loading assets", still,  like if it was still reading the card. and the first time it loaded the pictures the import button was not availllable once not all the photos were not all loaded when the loading assets message stopped.
i  had to force quit aperture, ejecting the card from the reader, aperture, on relaunch was still seeing the card as present but it was ejected from the finder , and  physicaly on the desk.
i had to go in Apple Acticity monitor to find a process that was still active , someting called mass media and had to stop it.
my work around was manually copying the content of the card on the external hard drive about  9 gig of photos on the external HDD where i keep my aperture photos.  copying 9 gig of photos over usb2 took an 50 minutes.
i had jpegs raw and some videos in 720p
    i have a MBP 2.26 ghz 13"
a Canon 7D and a Lexar 16 gig compact flash card.

I'm sorry, but I can't understand this paragraph. It seems like the "loading assets" message stopped but not all the photos were showing up in the import window. Were any of the photos duplicates? How long did you wait until you forced quit?
When you say "the first time it loadedthe pictures" you mean you attempted before and got the same result?
It does seem like it is either getting stuck on an image or is taking a long time to read the images off the card since the import button is not available...
When you copied the files to your external drive, you were then able to import to Aperture?
    Thanks

No, sorry... did not happen becasue no such model exists.
If the device is in recovery mode, any data on it is already lost.
    The only options are:
Restore the device to get it functional.
    Enjoy the paper weight.
For what reason did you attempt to update the device without first ensuring that your data was safe, meaning backing up the device and copying important pictures/videos taken with the device to a computer?

Possible if there is a problem with your iPhone's backup in regards to this data with no way to know this in advance.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.

Over the past 2 days i've been deleting pictures on my iPod so i can have enough memory to back it up, i deleted just about 3,000 pictures but still had 3,000 left on it. However i connected it to iTunes and my iPod went into recovery mode and i can't do anything until i've restored it. My iPod hasn't been backed up since April 2012 and i have had alot of important pictures added since then, will i lose my pictures? or is there anyway i can get them saved before i restore the iPod?

I have Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2 (424). I am having an identical problem.  All my pictures are imported into Iphoto when I downloaded them from my camera.  Until recently, I thought that the pictures were actually saved in the library.  Since I need to crop my pictures for the web, and Iphoto doesn't do that, I purchased Photoshop Elements to do that.  To my surprise, when I try to get a picture from Iphoto to Photoshop, it can't be done. That was when I realized, after wasting a lot of time, that the photos are not in the Iphoto library.
I started naming the pictures on Iphoto so I had a recognizable file name to open on Photoshop. Couldn't find it.  I looked in the Backup folder and the Transfer software folder (I have a Nikon camera), and the names I entered in the Iphoto display, could not be found.
When I am trying to upload a photo to the web, I get the Finder folder showing  with an active folder called "Photos" under "Media", which only displays Iphoto and PhotoBooth.  This is a folder name that I cannot find in my HD anywhere when I look for it.  If I edit a picture with Photoshop, I am not going to save it back to Iphoto (not sure whether it will work properly).  How do I get my folder of edited photos to show when I want to upload a picture to the web?
Where (the name of the folder) do I find the pictures I see displayed on the Iphoto library, including any name changes, keywords added, and so on?

See my response to your other post.
