Aperture Missing Masters

Hello Aperture Community,
Recently I decided to backup my Aperture Library to the cloud and decided to sync it to Google Drive.
Opened up my Aperture LIbrary to add some more photos to it and I noticed something really strange.
All of my photos had the little yield sign with the curved arrow.
They say the master is missing.
When I examine my Aperture library it is still quite large 387GB which should mean that all of my photos are there.
However when I try to find the images there are not many there and many of my images seem to be missing.
How can I get these back and why would the Aperture library lose all my images?
Jason

I guess my fear is that for some reason it turned into a two way sync and it tried to write back on the Aperture library thus corrupting it.
I don't use Google drive, so I cannot help with that.
I still feel that the files are sitting there I just can't find them since the file size is still correct at 400GB aprox.
If Google Drive did sync back, you will see exactly the broken references you are having now.
Aperture cannot find the original image files inside the Aperture library package. they are probably still there, and you will see them, if you ctrl-click the Aperture Library and use the command "Show Package Contents".
The big problem is that  Aperture cannot repair broken links to originals, if your library is managed. For a referenced library you could reestablish the links using "Locate referenced files".
The best option would be to restore your library from a Time machine backup, or whatever local backup you have.
The second option - very lossy - is to reimport the photos in the Masters folder, project by project, and essentially to recreate the library this way. Lift and stamp the adjustments and metadata from the previous versions, then delete the corrupted version.
The third option - treat your Aperture  as an iPhoto Library. Make a new backup of the current version of your Aperture library, then download the free trial version of iPhoto Library Manager (Fat Cat Software – iPhoto Library Manager). This great utility can sometimes relink originals and edited versions, when the First Aid Tools fail. You could give it a try - see this page:  Rebuilding a corrupted iPhoto library

missing masters in aperture , getting an yellow  exclamation mark ,

Q: Is there a way to place an image at 100% without having to do that extra resizing step?
I think here you want your images to fit in the full page size frame automatically. For this you can try the follwoing steps:
    1. Create a new doc
    2. Goto Object menu and choose Frame fitting options
    3. Select Autofit and from Fitting drowdown, select "Fit content to frame". Refer the screenshot below:
After this you images should automatically fit in the entire page placeholder frames. Please let me know if this does not work or if the problem you are facing is different and I did not understand your problem correctly.

  • Aperture/iphoto missing masters

I'm praying that someone can help me.  I use iPhoto and Aperture both.  I have about a 60GB library that hold approaximately 22,000 images.  I run my programs on the OSX Drive which is an 128GB SSD and I store the photos on a separate internal 750GB 7200 drive.
The problem recentlty is that about 12,000 masters appear to be missing.  In the browser view in Aperture I get the little yellow triangle with with the exclamation point inside. Most of the missing master appear to be from 2009 and earlier but I do have some masters from they period 2000-2010.
If I click on the "show package contents" of the library folder and go to the master folder the only years that are showing is 2011, 2012 and 2013.  Nothing from all prior years despite the fact that I can see the preview, high quality in almost full screen in Aperture.
WHAT I DID NOTICE is that if I look at photos from 2010 in Aperture that HAVE the master available, the bottom bar of the photo when I click on it says "From MobileMe".  If I click on one with the master missing (the little yellow triangle) it says "iPhoto Original".
All I know is that I want my master's back.  They are almosty ALL photos of of my kids. Can anyone help?  I've tried all rebuild/repair options in iPhoto and Aperture. I'm almost certain I didn't delete the masters.  I don;t have a time machine backup.  I did have other backups of the library but when I go to those, I have the sam issue, tons of missing masters even in the backup.
I'm worried that I am totally screwed and I'm heartbroken.  I can still see the photos which is what I don;t get.  I guess in the worst case I can go through and do shift-cmd-4 and take screen captures of any critical photos.
I'm wondering if someone can help me.  Is there some way to batch reproduce the masters from the data that I do have?  It's not just a thumbnail---it's a high quality image.  Have I some how created versions and deleted orginals?  Can someone--anyone help me?

Lots of questions here.  Mac version 10.8.2 Aperture Version 3.4.3.  I previously used iPhoto so that library existed first.  THen I switched to Aperture.  The only surviving library is the one with the missing masters.  It's been a while but I believe that this was the original iPhoto library and when Apple gave us the capability to interchangably use the library in Aperture or iPhoto, I just began to use this library principally in Aperture.  In other words I just opened Aperture and pointed it to the old iPhoto library.
Some of the missing images were published on Mobile Me (yes I have those masters).  I don;t still have a copy of iDisk but the photos would not ALL be there anyway.  I am missing about 13,000 masters--almost all the "old" photos that existed in the original iPhoto Library.
I've tried locating the referenced file to no avail.  I can't see the master in the lower pane.
If you cannot find the master image files anywhere on your Mac, but still see the images in Aperture's browser, you can at least save the previews of your images - just drag the image versions in question from Aperture's browser to a folder on your Desktop. That will save jpeg files of your images. These will not have the original quality of the master image files, however.
Regarding this method---yes that is what I've done and re-imported the files (about 25,000) into a brand new library but I am missing the high quality versions of the 13,000 masters.  What's REALLY interesting here is that this new library (a blend of about 50/50 high quality images and the lower quality images that don;t have masters) is about 30GB.  The library that is showing the missing masters with the arching arrow and the yellow triangle with the exclamation point is more than 60GB.  This would SEEM to indicate that the masters of all 25,000 images are there somewhere!!
Thanks for taking the time to help me.  I really want to recover these things.

  • Aperture regards masters as previews

    Hi,
I recently moved from iPhoto to Aperture. I opened my existing iPhoto library, which holds 25k pictures, in Aperture (so I did not use the File -> Import option, I simply opened the existing iPhote library).
Out of the 25k photos, roughly 500 of them have a badge with showing a yellow warning sign (I filtered on "File Status" is "Missing").
After some investigation through the Finder, it turns out that for these 500 photos, Aperture is missing the master files. So there is no photo in the My iPhoto Library / Masters but there is a photo in My iPhoto Library / Previews. However, these photos are actually masters, not previews, judging from the pixel size (3008 x 2000, which is the same as the other photos I took with my Nikon D70 at that time).
It looks to me that somehow Aperture regards these photos not as masters, but as previews. I can't find a pattern which of the 500 images are affected by this, it seems to have happened to some random pictures in my library.
Is there an easy way to let Aperture recognise these photos as masters again? I guess one option could be to copy each image to e.g. the desktop and import them again. How do I ensure Aperture links these newly imported photos to the photos regarded as previews?
Would the problem be resolved if I _import_ my iPhoto library into Aperture rather than just open it? What are the differences/benefits of importing an iPhoto library compared to opening an library in iPhoto?
    Thanks,
    Ivo

    Hi Frank,
    Aperture 3.4.5
    iPhoto 9.4.3
Yes, I could try to import the complete library as a new Aperture library but I guess this would create a library file at least equal in size of the existing library, i.e. 75 Gb. Are there any benefits of doing so? Will all the projects, keywords and albums be maintained? Will it make browsing the library faster?
I have tried to re-import one of the problematic photos to see if Aperture would automatically recognise and regard it as a master - no success.
    Best regards,
    Ivo

  • Missing masters in exported library

I have a managed library in Aperture 3. I am trying to export a project as a new library so I can transfer it to another mac.
After I have exported the project as a new library, if I open the new library, many photos have the badge saying "Missing master". I have exported with "Consolidate masters" and "Include previews" options active but it still happens.
In the original project, there is no "missing master" badge.
Does anyone know what's gone wrong here?

Ann's link is to install the "functional content" for Premiere Pro and Encore. This includes templates and styles in addition to the Encore "library." To get the templates (I think this includes Flash export templates), you must install this. However, this installs only a limited library of full templates - no buttons etc.
I think the OP had already downloaded and installed this.
John's link is the latest version of the full Encore library. An earlier version (but probably identical in content) is at the bottom of the link Ann provided. I think they improved the file size at some point.
Getting the filename the OP downloaded would help.

  • Can i replace missing masters w/ preview/browser images?

I have an aperture library with some pictures where the master is missing.  I see them just fine in the browser.  I cannot find them anywhere on my computer and disks (i.e. I have read and explored every method discussed here and at other support websites to locate them).  We believe they were originally 'referenced' and then some time later the masters were deleted from the directory where they had been located.  Now that i am certain that no master is to be found anywhere on my computer, can the 'previews' be exported or somehow used to replace these masters?
They look good enough and appear to have the quality and resolution to make it worth the effort, but i have not figured out how to do this.  Suggestions?
    John

The previews can;t be exported via the normal procedure, the export pane, but you can simply drag them out of Aperture. If you click on one of the images and start dragging you will see the pointer turn to a green plus indicating you are copying the image.
I would make a folder or folders on the desktop and drag the images from Aperture into it. Create a smart folder in Aperture to select all the images with missing originals, select all those and drag them out.
Then you can import those images back into Aperture. Note that these images will be treated as new imports by Aperture, there will be no connection to their previews or metadata currently in the library.

  • Aperture Lost Masters after Time Machine restore

    Hello, everybody.
I have such problem. I experience some problems with mouse freeze after 10.6.3 update and tried to solve this problem by restoring my backup copy of system from Time Machine. I restored full hdd. All working ok, but Aperture lost links to Masters. I did not save pictures in Aperture library all of them imported to library as linked to original files (save in current location). I see files using Finder, I could find each file through check reference files in Aperture. But it almost impossible to do it for each file in Aperture Library (more than 20000+ files) manually. How i could fix this problem? OS 10.6.5, Aperture 3.1.1

If I'm reading your post correctly these are *referenced masters*, correct? And Aperture has lost the connection to them but you still can see them on the drive. Now you want to reconnect them.
    # Select all the images in Aperture that Aperture has lost its link to. You can use a *Smart Album* to so this. In the *Smart Album* select *Add Rule* then in the rule select missing. This will give you an album of all missing files. Select them all.
    # Goto *File->Locate Referenced Files*. All the missing files will be listed. You can reconnect them from here. It can be a bit tricky so it would be best if you read the section on this in the Aperture Users manual.
    Good luck

  • Aperture lost masters

I restored my aperture from a vault couple days ago and everything else went fine but the masters that were in the local aperture library were missing. The relocated masters were just fine.
When I checked the library using finder the masters were there alright but for some reason aperture couldn't find them. Then I had to manually import every master back to the aperture and with lift & stamp tool move the metadata from the broken master to the new master and then delete the broken master.
Luckily I had just moved almost all of the images to an external drive so had only 100+ of them in the local library.
So, I have few questions: Has anyone else had this kind of a problem? That master is there but aperture doesn't recognize it? And is there any way to point where the master is if aperture has lost it?
All the updates etc are installed.

I am beginning to think I ought to get the Apple team to do a "sticky" for me on this topic - it's the third time I've referenced it in a week...
If you've moved your library from one machine to another, or upgraded your Mac, or created a new user and are having problems running Aperture, or seeing masters/versions... the chances are that you have a permissions problem.
Here's a way to see if your library has been written-to by two different user-id's. You need to open Terminal, and change to the correct directory by typing (replace the /path/to/library with the correct location)...
    cd /path/to/directory/containing/Aperture Library.aplibrary
    (eg: I typed ... cd /Volumes/data/aperture)
then type in (or copy/paste the below
    find . -exec ls -ln {} \; | awk '{print $3}' | sort | uniq
If you get back more than one number (I get '501'), then you have a permissions problem. Note that this can take a long long time to run. It might be best left running overnight if you have a gargantuan library. I assume that's why Apple don't do it at startup...
If you do get more than one number, then read through thread http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4384572#4384572, and follow the instructions to change the ownership of the files, you'll probably find your problems go away.

  • Elements 3 WIN-file info shutter speed & aperture missing

Please forgive me if this is a duplicate but I haven't been able to locate this topic in help files, FAQs or on this forum. That doesn't mean it's not there-only that there is so much info that I can't find it.
I have a Sony DSC-H2 camera. When I open photo files from this camera in Photoshop Elements 3 and view File Info there is missing information on the Camera Data 1 tab-the aperture and shutter speed. This is supposed to be read only information.
Any ideas on why it's missing and how I can correct this?
    Thanks so much, Lisa

  • What Are The Limits To Aperture? (Masters, Versions, Projects...)

If Apple has a specification for any of these, I couldn't find it.
It's obviously not on the Aperture web site under tech specs.
I couldn't find it in the user manual, but I have been known to stink at searching the manual.
I did some searching on this forum, but I kept coming up with some rather old posts.
Which means, the answer is probably right in front of me and I simply can't see it. So, sorry for asking a question that I'm sure has been asked and answered more than once.
I was wondering if anyone knows what, if any are the limits for ...
How many Masters in a Library?
How many Versions in a Library?
How many projects in a Library?

  • Aperture missing "Picture Package"equivalent to photoshop???

Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that aperture is limited to printing very crude contact sheets that really do not compare to photoshops "picture package".
Basically I tried to print two 8x12s(different images) on a 13x19 photo paper. Ultimately I ended up going into photoshop where I resized the two images to 8x12s and positioned them onto a new 13x19 canvas. This then was a newly created file that I reimported back into aperture. I know this is not really a good work flow, but it seems that aperture has not even thought out a very crude picture package equivalent to photoshop
Also there is no measurement showing inches just pixels. It would be nice if they could show a ruler layout on the image it self similar to photoshop. Resizing in photoshop is much more practicle and straight forward.
I here that lightroom is far better for printing packages also.
Does any one agree about these shortcommings???

This is a glaring omission that has been noted since day 1 of Aperture 1.0, made more frustrating by the very robust printing features available in Lightroom. Surely Apple is aware of the problem, and hopefully they will find a fix in 1.6 or 2.0 or whatever comes next, but it's aggravating to know that a fairly sophisticated app like Aperture requires shareware oddities like ImageBuddy or Portraits-n-Prints in order to get packages working.
Time to fix this one, Apple. (Get the book tool working usefully while you're at it too!)

  • Aperture - Missing SystemID file?

After upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard, I have been having issue with my Aperture 3 install. Twice I have reinstalled Aperture from the install disc and entered my serial information, but as the user in this thread did ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2677071 ) I have to reenter my serial information every time the computer reboots.
I have used Software Update to install all the Aperture, ProApps, and OS updates.
I have also trashed the preference file and looked for a SystemID file in the /Library/Application Support/ProApps/ProAppsSystemID folder but I don't have one. It didn't get recreated with the fresh install.
    Anyone have suggestions for me?

    Benny,
That post does not indicate looking for a file called SystemId, but rather removing the ProAppsSystemID file, which you have called a folder. If yours is a folder instead of a regular file, then there may be a problem there. The last post indicates the user had moved that file and it was recreated later. Have you tried moving/deleting that ProAppsSystemID file?

  • Aperture missing from Media

I used to select photos from Aperture in the Finder under the "Media" category, but suddenly I only see iPhoto (which has nothing of note in it).  How can I restore Aperture.  I'll need to be able to find it to use Adobe's Carousel.
    Aperture v 3.2.1
    OS 10.7.2 (Lion)

    Hello Alice,
    that is a pity.
Then quit Aperture, remove the Aperture preference file from your Library, maybe that file is corrupted, log off and log on again.
    To remove the preferences:
To open your hidden Library select:  Finder -> GO -> (hold down the opt/alt key) and select "Library"
In the Library open the "Preferences"  folder and remove "com.apple.Aperture.plist"
    Hope that helps

  • Synching iPad/iPhone with Aperture missing pictures

Recently when I synch my iPad and iPhone with iTunes , the number of pictures I get on my iPad or iPhone is either less or equal to zero when compared to the folders and projects in my Aperture Library. For Example my entire Aperture library contains 15331 pictures if I synch it all I consistently get 5604 photos in my iPad or iPhone. I have the latest versions of OSX, Aperture and ITunes as well as iOS. I have repaired, rebuilt the Aperture Library and repaired permissions on my HD but the problem persists.
Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

There is no solution. USB 2.0 is required. If your notebook has a PCMCIA slot then you might look for a PCMCIA card that provides one or two USB 2.0 ports, but I don't know if such an animal exists.

  • Export from Aperture - missing the edited version

After editing a raw image in AP3 and exporting (the version) as a jpg and importing the very image into Lightroom 3, I can not see the editing done to the image before export. What am I doing wrong?

    i have the same problem.
pictured edited (crop only) in Ipad4, looks good, save to camera roll, then i uploaded pictures to icloud/skydrive, but found the pictures on icloud changed back to original uncroped version, what is waste of time.
when use snapseed to the editing, pictures in icloud is normal, just as what it looks like in Camera roll.
