Aperture newbie - library / file folder question

I am still trying to figure out the best way to use aperture to organize my work and even after reading the documents, I'm confused about why it stores things the way it is and what other options would be of benefit.
With iPhoto, everything was stored in the iPhoto library. With they way Aperture is set up, I still have an Aperture library "file" that is 6.x gig but all my files are being stored in the pictures folder under their own folder names. I was under the impression all pictures were stored in the library file like iPhoto did. I'm assuming I just have something set differently.
So if that is the case and I can store all my images in the Aperture folder, what is the advantage of doing that versus they way its storing all of them now? Is one way better than another? Any opinions?
Thanks.
Matt

On a laptop or on an iMac you probably do want to manage by Referencing image Masters. Hard drives slow as they fill, so at some point - perhaps immediately - you will want your Masters on one or more external Firewire 800 hard drives. OWC <http://www.owcomputing.com/> has good Firewire 800 solutions.
With Referenced Masters, simply Finder-copy each new batch of images to the external hard drive and eject the camera card. Then (after backup of images) from within Aperture Import the images by Reference (when you go to import, on the right hand side of the import window select "Store files in their current location").
Existing images on your hard drive can similarly be imported selecting "Store files in their current location" however personally I would move the originals to an external drive prior to importing into Aperture because trying to keep originals on the single iMac or laptop internal drive will sooner or later overfill the drive.
During the import process is also a good time to assign all manner of keywords, so take some time in advance thinking about keywording.
A good rule of thumb is not to fill any drive more than 70%, and for best speed keep important drives no more than 50% full.
Good luck!

  • Aperture 3 library file organization question

I tried searching for an answer to this question but I had no luck.  Perhaps I was searching on the wrong keywords.
In the older version of Aperture, you could look in the "guts" of the library and see individual projects, but as far as I can tell with Aperture 3 you can only see files by date (i.e. by year, month etc).
My problem is that I don't currently have access to the entire library via Aperture, but I have access to all the files via the cloud (I am using Crash Plan).  I need to find individual files but searching chronologically makes no sense and neither does downloading the (terabyte plus) library to use in a local copy of Aperture is not feasible.
Is there a way that I can identify specific projects within the Aperture3Lib file?  Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Attached is a couple of screenshots of what Crashplan shows.

No sorry in Aperture 3 all that got turned into entries in database files. And even if you could find them it would do you no good because the only place an actual image file is located is in the Masters folder, where the files imported are kept and the Previews folder, where the previews are kept.
Also bear in mind that the Masters folder is organized by import date and time not image date and time.
As a  side note you need to be very careful using an online backup service for Aperture (and iPhoto) libraries. Because of the way the # libraries there have been reports of some of the services causing libraries problems when restored.

  • Newbie Library file question

I have an application that fails 50 -60% of the time. The author wants me too remove the Library file that allows me to see AVI movies from my Casio Elxim digital camera. This call to that file allows the use of Quick time to view my camera avi movies and it works flawlessly.
However I read in David Pogues Missing manual for Tiger OSX that he reccomends not moving or deleating Library files.
So what I was wondering, is there a way just to comment out this library entry so I can see if this is the culprit the author of my failing application claims it may be with out deleating the Library entry?
Thanks in advance for your time.

    Hi Da Brain,
Your backup is up-to-date, as always, isn't it?
    So,
yes, do not delete the file, but you can simply drag it off the Library, put it on the Desktop, restart your computer, verify that it is not anymore at its Library location, and try now, see if your system really works better without it.
As soon as you would need the file again (or if it causes an unexpected problem), you would take it back from the Desktop, drag it back to its Library location.
What file is it exactly? If it was not installed by Mac OS X itself, trying the Desktop move should be perfectly safe.

  • Blinking file folder question mark on start up!

My mac was working fine I shut it down because the mouse froze like it does some time. It turned back on with a white screeen and and a blinking file folder with a question mark on it and stays that way until it shuts down! Its a white screen behind it and it makes the start up noise. What is going on and how can I fix it? I already kept it off for a while then took out the battery.. any other suggestions?

I got this same message after using Disk Utilities to create a new partition formatted in FAT 32, booting from my windows XP CD, reformatting that partition to NTFS, and installing Windows XP on that partition. (So I can dual-boot without using Boot Camp Beta, which is expired)
I worked around it just fine by holding the "alt" key when booting, which (after entering my firmware password) allows me to select the boot partition. It's like I somehow selected "Neither" for my default startup disk.
It's possible that your problem goes beyond this.
By the way, in my Windows reformat, I did end up deleting several 200 MB partitions that appeared on my drive...it looked like this:
    (partition) (size) (name) (file format)
Partition 1: 198 MB [unknown empty
    Partition 2: 250000 MB [Windows FAT32
Partition 3: 202 MB [unknown empty
partition 4: 850000 MB [Unknown unknown
this one is formatted in the mac file system, but XP (of course) doesn't
    recognize it....
partition 5: 201 MB [unknown empty
Anybody know what's going on here? I sucessfully merged the first three from the XP cd, but I don't know what's up with Disk Utility and why it leaves these spaces after partitioning.....

  • Iphoto and aperture library file folder problem

    Hi all,
    I have a problem.
I want to have aperture and iphoto folders organized as itunes files fiolder. is possible?
I see in my aperure library that master folder (I have selected the option copy files in library) there are many and many date folder (many of them are empty) and I don't like this method of organization.
if I don't  check the option to copy files and keep my database with only thumb, I have the problem that if I modify or delete a photo the original remain untouched.
    please there are solutions?
    davide

    "(where?)"
Where you specify.  Please see section 6 on this page (the User Manual is slightly out-of-date -- substitute "Original" for "Master"):
Choose a location for the imported files by doing one of the following:
To store imported masters in the Aperture library: Choose “In the Aperture Library” from the Store Files pop-up menu.
To store imported masters as referenced image files, audio files, or video files in their current location: Choose “In their current location” from the Store Files pop-up menu.
To store imported masters as referenced image files, audio files, or video files in the Pictures folder on your hard disk: Choose Pictures from the Store Files pop-up menu, and then choose whether you want the files moved or copied to the Pictures folder by clicking the “Move files” or “Copy files” button.
To store imported masters as referenced image files, audio files, or video files in a location other than the Pictures folder: Choose “Choose” from the Store Files pop-up menu and select a folder. In the dialog that appears, choose a location to store the imported masters, then click Open. Choose Project Name from the Subfolders pop-up menu to specify that the files be stored in a folder with the same name as the project. Choose whether you want the image files moved or copied to the new location by clicking the “Move files” or “Copy files” button.
" (are you sure? I don't find this option)"
    I'm pretty sure.  From
    Deleting Images from the Browser
If you delete the last version in a version stack, Aperture asks whether you want to delete the master. If you confirm that you want to delete the master, the master is moved to the Aperture Trash.
When an image is represented in the Browser by a single version, you can select the version and delete it, and the corresponding master is deleted as well.
When you empty the Aperture Trash you should get a dialog box similar to this one.  Note the field with the check box:

  • HT201250 Aperture 3 library file permission problem

On trying to open Aperture 3 I get a message saying "Aperture cannot access this library. To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly". When I click OK Aperture shuts down. Can anyone help?
I've been stumbling through trying to rationalise too many Aperture libraries and moving them to an external drive. This is almost certainly how I've manged to get into this situation...

  • Playlist-Library file relationship questions...

    Hello,
I periodically sync my library with a family member.(via vpn)
    Here's what I've found:
iTunes Library.xml seems to contain almost all the information that shows up in iTunes, i.e. playlists and songs.
If I copy over the target iTunes Library.xml, it also copies over MY playlists, thus deleting the target playlists.
As a temp fix I've been only copying over the music files not the iTunes Library.xml and then doing a manual import from the target iTunes.
But when I delete files, it doesn't delete them from the target music list until it's done manually (usually when you click a song on the target and it gets a "!-locate file?" thing...
Is there a way to copy over the iTunes Library.xml but preserve the playlists on the target? (other than exporting them all manually from the target first, copying over iTunes Library.xml, then re-importing all the target's playlists?...
I ask this because the target has so many playlists now that i'ts becoming quite tedious...
any other ways I haven't thought of? (library sharing is out of the question since it's a 2mb VPN, which winds up being about 1.3mb 'true' with the encryption-inflation...kinda like 'rear wheel horsepower' in cars.)
    Thanks all.

I had this issue and, after chasing it down on postings, I rebooted and made sure the drive was mounted before launching Itunes and that seemed to clear it up.
I did have to reset the location of the drive in prefs, owing to the still annoying defect in Itunes which blanks out the drive prefs if it does not detect the drive on opening rather than leaving it populated.

  • Newbie snapshot file saving question

I want to have Mullesight take a snapshot and place a JPG inside my "snapshots" folder on my desktop. The problem is that it keeps saving the same same file name and won't allow me to take more than one picture. I wish to have successive pictures named differently, such as picture1.jpg, picture2.jpg, etc., in my snapshots folder.

  • Move existing Aperture photos (from iPhoto) to Aperture's library's library

    Hi,
I recently moved from iPhoto to Aperture. I did something wrong tho, since now most of my photos in Aperture are still in iPhoto's library (all of these show the "iPhoto Original" keyword).
I want to have them all in my Aperture's library, but I put many time on Aperture's organization and don't want to have to import all from the very beginning. Is there any way I can move those files still in iPhoto's library folder to Aperture's library? I plan to uninstall iPhoto after that, that's why I want all photos in Aperture's library.
    Thank you

If the image is shown in Aperture, the image is in Aperture's Library.
The question is, where are the Master files on which the images in your Aperture Library are based.  (The keyword "iPhoto Original" tells you nothing about the location of the Master.)
Right-click an image.  Does "Show in Finder" appear in the pop-up menu?  If so, then your image has a Referenced Master (Referenced Masters are located outside the Aperture Library (the image is in the Library and has a pointer to its Master which is outside the Library)).  If not, your image has a Managed Master (the image, the pointer, and the Master are all inside the Aperture Library.
You can filter for images with Referenced or Managed Masters.  Also, most of the default Metadata Overlays include a Badge which will show you which images have Referenced Masters (as well as the status of the Master).
Since you (seem to) want to have all of your images' Masters be Managed (= inside the Aperture Library), simply select all images and execute the command "File→Consolidate Masters".  You can confirm that this has been done by using a Filter set to show all images with Referenced Masters.  It should show no images.
Once all of your Masters have been consolidated into your Aperture Library, you can safely delete your iPhoto Library.  You can also uninstall iPhoto is you wish.

The digitization of data has introduced a complexity to our interactions with it that we continue to struggle with.  "Picture" and "Photo" now mean different things in different contexts.  In this case (and in general) defining our terms clearly is the first step towards understanding what we are trying to do.  Understanding is the path that allows us to do it.
All pedantic, but please stick with me here  .
You record a set of instantaneous data with a camera.
That data is processed by your camera and saved to a file.
The file format is usually either RAW or JPG.
You transfer those files to your computer, and you import them into the program Aperture (often in one operation).
From each camera-file imported, Aperture creates a record in its database (called, imho unhelpfully, a Library) and an Image that you see in the Aperture Browser and Viewer.
Aperture links the Image and the imported file.
The imported file is called, within Aperture, an Original.
    Every Image has an Original.
The Image is not the Original.  The Image is what you see in Aperture.
The Original is a file that is stored on your computer.
You can make changes to an Image.
    Aperture calls these changes Adjustments.
Adjustments are saved to another file attached to the record in the database.  Let's call this file the Changes File.
Aperture uses these two files attached to the record in the database to create the Image.
Image = Original + Changes File.
The Image is not a file.
Because the Image is not a file, it cannot be shared with other programs.  It exists only inside of Aperture.
In order to share an Image with another program, you must first create a file of the Image.
You do this by exporting Images ("File ▹ Export ▹ Version" is the command in Aperture; should be, imho, "File ▹ Export ▹ Image").
You may ask, "Why all the complexity?  Why doesn't Aperture save Images as files?"  The answer is simple:  Images can require less — and in many cases very very much less — storage space than files of Images.  Rather than save a full-size file for every Image, Aperture saves only instructions on how to make that full-size file.  The gain in storage efficiency is huge.  The trade-off is that although your Images are always available to be made into share-able files, you must create those files when needed (which you do by exporting selected Images).
Here is your question reworded with more precise terms:
    SamanthaR22 might have written:
How do I access Images in my Aperture Library in the Finder?  I would like I be able to select files in the Finder when I am making photo books online without having to create them by exporting Images from Aperture into a new Finder folder. Is there any way to view and download my Images directly from the Finder?
No, there is not.  Images exist only in Aperture, and are not accessible for use in other programs.  You must create, for each Image in your Aperture Library, a new file outside of your Aperture Library in order to use it with another program.
Aperture does allow you to create and save within your Library share-able files of your Images.  These files are called Previews.  You specify the file parameters in Aperture Preferences on the Previews tab.  These files are available to other programs via the OS X Media Browser.  These files are what you get when you drag selected Images out of the Aperture program and drop them on another program or on your desktop (which is part of the Finder).

  • Finding the Sample Library File and the Wyoming Folder

I had a 30 day trial and purchased the activation code (not the DVD). The "Exploring Aperture" tutorial mentions getting the Sample Library File and Wyoming Folder from the installation disk. • Aperture 3 library appears as a folder?

I have several Aperture 3 libraries and they all appear as the standard triple pane icon (package I believe—just click it and the library opens in Aperture).  However, my main Aperture 3 library (some 25K pics) appears as a blank folder containing 11 items.  I can open this one and also the other libraries with Aperture 3 itself.  That is not a problem.  I just purchased Dupicate Annihilator and managed to find duplicates in my other libraries.  But it will not open the main library (the one that has a blank folder instead of the standard icon).  Is there a chance my real library is somewhere else?  Can anyone direct me?

    Hello Leo,
What does the File -> Get Info Panel show on your Aperture Library? Do you see "Kind" = "Aperture Library" like this?
If not, I would recommend to repair the Permissions or repair the Aperture Library, as outlined in
Aperture 3 Trouble Shooting Basics http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
Are you working with Aperture 3.2.1? Then maybe the problem with Duplicate Annihilator is due to the fact, that this program has only been released for Aperture 3.1?

  • Aperture library file size ?

    Hello,
I have all my pictures on a specific drive. I don't want aperture to import the files into this aperture library, i only want the files to be referenced. So when i import the pictures from the drive, i select "Store in Current Location". And it seems to be ok (meaning when i click on a file and say show in finder, it shows the drive in question), only my aperture library (even when i import files as referenced) ... increases it's size drastically, no matter whether the files are stored in the library itself or if they are only referenced ... how come? I want to avoid a 100GB aperture library file!!
Can someone explain to me how this works?
    regards,
    k
    (i just bought aperture 3)

    K,
Aperture stores many little JPG files for every photo that is in your library (whether referenced or managed). There are thumbnails and previews for every photo unless you run out of space or turn off previews.
Your library should not increase by the *same size* if you store a photo *by reference* as if you store managed. For a managed photo, Aperture will have your original (master) plus the thumbnails and previews. The referenced will have only thumbnails and previews. You can browse your Aperture library by right-clicking and viewing the package contents. You can then look (*but don't ever touch!!!*) at what exactly Aperture is managing. You will see pictures with the same and/or similar names are your original, but you will see they are different sizes. If you see your original, then something is out of whack.
I hope your "100GB" library was just an example. If you store by reference, you would need a LOT of photos to make the thumbnails and previews take 100 GB.

  • Newbie - JPDK file and setting questions

I study this existing code, and can't get it to run properly. My first question is this:
    1) The code UrlUtils.constructResourceURL( portletRequest, HttpPortletRendererUtil
    .absoluteLink( request, url ) );
Returns a URL with respect to the provider. My machine name is "mymachine" for example, but it returns "localhost" instead. So, for portal page, it's "mymachine" for this host, and for resources, it's "localhost". Since they're not the same, I have some authentication issue.
Is there a configuration to get this to work properly?
    2) The provider's properties configuration file location
    I saw 2 files under WEB-INF/deployment
    _default.properties
    and:
    somepackage.com.provider.properties
Then, I look at these threads:
    http://www.it-eye.nl/weblog/2005/09/23/get-user-information-in-your-portlet/
    It says:
    default.properties
    application.properties
Which are not the same names as above
    This thread:
OC4J_Portal creating unwanted LDAP connexions to OID
    It says:
    oid.properties
So, what is it? Any properties file within WEB-INF/deployment? Where do I configure the name/location for this file?
    3) In that property file, there is this entry:
    definition=providers/somepackage.provider/provider.xml
The provider.xml file is located in
    WEB-INF/providers/somepackage.provider/provider.xml
However, I got an error, and it says it looks for the provider.xml at:
    c:/providers/somepackage.provider/provider.xml
So I moved the file there, and it stops this error. What is going on here, and how do I fix this problem?
    4) I already configure the OID in the container, with host, port, username, password. Why do I also need to do it here, and providing the same information (with some additional LDAP paths)
I am guessing that the OID for the container is for the web.xml (application level) security settings, while this properties file is used internally by JPDK.
    Could some experts please help.
Thank you very much in advance.

    Hi
In Safari Preferences>General, "open safe files" ought to be selected. Then, downloads open automatically based on their file type (.dmg, .zip, etc.). Safari does not ask you how you want to open the file.
I suggest downloading the Citrix file again. The corruption of the original download is usually not a function of Safari, but rather the source. If you still have a problem with the download after following the above, quit Safari. Go to the Finder. In your User Account>Library>Safari folder, move the downloads.plist file to the trash, then restart Safari and try the download again.

    Okay,
So I've been a long way with this iMac. It originally came to me with bad power supply. I replaced. Then it came back with bad capacitors. I replaced. Then it came back not booting. Here's where I'm stuck.
I dont see the drive if I use command - s. If I boot OS X install cd, I can select OS X 10.4.11 on [OS Volume Name] in Startup Disk, I can see all the files on the disk, I've ran all repair options including file permissions and Disk Warrior, but the OS never loads.
Tried Safe Mode, Single User, Verbose Mode, PRAM Reset, NVRAM Reset, reset-all in command-option-o-f mode, I've blessed the /Volumes/[OS Volume Name]/System/Library/CoreServices directory several different ways, still the OS never loads... blinking folder & question mark.
I dont have correct install cd for this system and can't reinstall. Any suggestions or repairing bootloader, kernel, or something advanced...???
    Anyone?

Hi Jkat, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Sounds like short of a proper install disk, you've tried everything but this...

"OK, restart your computer, hold down Command-s and type in the following:
    /sbin/fsck -y Enter
    /sbin/mount -uaw Enter
    rm /var/db/.applesetupdone Enter
    # The rm command is the remove command which deletes the file.
    # Robert: I'd rename the file via: mv /var/db/.applesetupdone /var/db/.applesetupdone.old
    reboot Enter
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!
