Aperture + noise ninja?

I'm shooting RAW with an S2-PRO and am experiencing a lot of noise in the shadows, including annoying linear patterns. I tried my best to eliminate it with aperture's noise tools with no success. Finally resorted to a round trip to photoshop and noise ninja more or less fixed the problem. My question is, will aperture support noise ninja as a plug-in someday? Duplicating masters with round trips seems crazy with the excellent file management that aperture has. Please consider it aperture? Thanks. Yes, this is my first post!

I hope so. Aperture NR works well for most of my images, but recently I had to resort to what you described. Noise Ninja saved the day. Any time I don't have to store a full Photoshop image I'm grateful.

  • Noise Ninja for Aperture has been released

from the picture code site ...
+PictureCode today released a plug-in version of Noise Ninja for Apple's Aperture photo editing and management software. The plug-in allows Aperture users to employ best-of-breed noise reduction without leaving the Aperture workflow. The official release is available on the download page.+
    http://picturecode.com/news.htm#MacIntel
    http://picturecode.com/nn_aperture.htm

with regard to your PS profiles, they will work here ...
+Noise Ninja includes an automatic profile loader that attempts to select the best matching saved noise profile when you open an image. The automatic profile loader looks for a saved profile that matches the camera model, ISO setting, and image type of each image opened in Noise Ninja. The automatic profile loader looks in two folders when searching for a matching profile. It looks in the main profiles folder that is located under Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Noise Ninja for Aperture > Profiles. It also looks in the secondary per user profiles folder under Macintosh HD > Users > Username > Library > Application Support > Noise Ninja for Aperture > Profiles. The automatic profile loader looks at the camera model, ISO setting, and image type encoded into each profile's filename until it finds one that matches the image. If any of this information is missing in the image or in the profile's filename then a match cannot be made. If a match is not found then the automatic profile loader does not select a profile and Noise Ninja runs the automatic profiler to create a new profile from the image itself. You can manually select any saved profile by selecting Choose profile... from the Profile drop-down.+
you just need to create the folder and drop them in it ... then auto load will work ...

  • Aperture 3 and Noise Ninja

Has anyone heard when Noise Ninja will be updated to run Aperture 3? Right now, Aperture 3 is instructing that I run Aperture in 32-bit mode rather than 64 in order to use this plug-in but that doesn't seem to be working.

This past Wednesday (17th), I had an email exchange with a support person from PictureCode. He reported that:
"We will make a 64 bit Aperture 3 plug-in available once we've had time to test the plug-in and installation process. The plug-in is already running. We just have to finish testing and update the web site. I do not anticipate this taking more than a week.
We will provide this release as soon as we can."
    So soon, I suppose

  • Use Noise Ninja in Aperture or Photoshop?

If I am going to edit an image in Photoshop (eg cloning some clutter out) and want to reduce noise, is it better to do this in Aperture with Noise Ninja and then edit with Photoshop or just send to Photoshop apply Noise Ninja and then make other edits?  Is this an option, does Aperture send the Noise Ninja edits across to Photoshop or are these lost?
I am moving to CS6 and will run 64 bit (and Noise Ninja for Mac is still 32 bit ... annoying).  Hence my interest in running NN in Aperture.
Of course if Aperture or Photoshop matched NN ...

    Very good reasons  .
OP -- do you need to use an external editor for any other edits?  If so, then use PS as the base file for all external edits.  If not ... imho it's easier (and this ease if worth something) to just launch the external editor directly from Aperture.
So _if_ you are going to edit in PS, _and_ you are going to use NN, then call NN from PS.
Put generally, I suggest that you _always_ launch external editors from PS whenever you will be using more than one.  This aggregates the edits into layers (at least I think it does) saved as a single Aperture Master.  (Each calling of an external editor creates a new Master in Aperture.)
Aside: the handling of externally edited files in Aperture violates the "non-destructive workflow".  The implemention is, imho, immature.  I'm hoping for a robust solution in the next full release of Aperture.

  • Noise Ninja 64-bit Plugin for Aperture 3

For those of you who rely on Noise Ninja, I figured the community would be interested in the news that they have finished their 64 plug-in for Aperture 3 and are in the final testing phase before release.
I wrote them yesterday, and got the following response:
    Hi Kevin,
We will make a 64 bit Aperture 3 plug-in available once we've had time to test the plug-in and installation process. The plug-in is already running. We just have to finish testing and update the web site. I do not anticipate this taking more than a week.

I will send you an email as soon as we have our release ready.
    Kind regards,
    Bill
    PictureCode
I have been using their application since 2004, and in Aperture since Apple introduced the plugin structure wit Version 2. IMHO, Noise Ninja is best-in-class, and great folks to deal with.

Yes! Got my email notice this afternoon -- it works!

  • Noise Ninja plugin just released for Aperture

    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/aperture/noiseninja.html
Any chance this will happen for Lightroom in the near future?

Unfortunately Lee_Jay that is at best a hack job and not even close to what
Adobe said they would do. They need to get off the pot with this and get it
done. Otherwise they need to be willing to add a considerable number of
features to LR including Noise Ninja like noise reduction, book printing,
better slideshow options, better web gallery options and so on.
I can understand if Adobe doesn't want to do it, but they do need to allow
third parties to do it. Without this Lightroom is only 1/4 the program it
could be. Photoshop without the plug-in support wouldn't be as popular as it
    is without it.
You may not agree and that is fine, however the customer is always right and
many of this need and demand this.

  • Noise Ninja Problem when downloading images from Epson P-3000 hard drive

I've just downloaded JPEG images from my Epson P-3000 hard drive and when I try to sharpen the images using Noise Ninja plug-in in Aperture I get the following error message: Editing Error. This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format. I don't have any issues using Noise Ninja with other images (using latest Aperture version) and this is the first time i've downloaded images from the Epson rather than my memory card. I'm wondering if the issue is related to the Epson. The metadata of the image in Aperture confirms that the image is a JPEG so I'm not sure what's going on.

  • Problem with plug-ins (Noise Ninja & Topaz Denoise)

I've been trying to try demo of Noise Ninja & Topaz Denoise.
    I continuously get following message:
    Editing Error
This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format.
I've deleted aperture.plist and repaired permissions.
    Does anyone have these working?
    How?
    Very frustrated.

I too have had nothing but problems with Topaz filters.
It seems they're not as Mac-friendly as the developer leads you to believe.
I've installed, had it working once, stopped working, uninstalled, deleted the Topaz Appliation support.
gone through the process again and again.
    and it's nothing but problems.
I've given up and am hoping to find another developer who makes an easy to install plugin for Aperture.

  • Noise Ninja Workflow

I tried to initiate this topic of discussion in the NN online forum, but participation seems light there.
The NN FAQ states the following: "It is usually best to apply noise reduction as early as is practical in the workflow. Post-processing adjustments like sharpening, contrast stretching, and color balancing can alter pixel values and noise levels in unpredictable ways. Depending on the amount of adjustment, this can make it more difficult for Noise Ninja to estimate noise levels. Sharpening, for instance, is a nonlinear operation that can significantly distort the distribution of noise values.
If your workflow requires that you use Noise Ninja after some other operations, then try to create noise profiles using calibration images that have been put through the same operations.
Running Noise Ninja early in the workflow is a good rule of thumb, but Noise Ninja can be applied at any time. Sometimes it may not be possible or practical to run Noise Ninja at an earlier point in the workflow. For example, most users are not using a RAW processor with plug-in support so they run Noise Ninja after the RAW processing step."
Although it seemed less than obvious in this statement that RAW processing must be completed before editing with the NN plugin, but this would appear to be the case, since the plugin is not using RAW file, and the file returned is no longer subject to the normal edit controls used for RAW images?
But when now going back over many existing projects and images to enhance via NN, the question is really to the difference between applying NN to the existing Versions, versus trying to back up to a point prior to adjustments having been applied that are not dependent upon RAW processing?
What are the Pros and Cons of what was stated above: "using a RAW processor with plug-in support so they run Noise Ninja after the RAW processing step" insofar as processing new images?

Well, since NN does not have its own raw converter, it has to work with tif, jpeg files. Which means that raw file was converted somewhere. My guess is that many are converted to tif or jpeg in the camera; hence, the profiles are available for various camera models and ISO settings.
Since each raw converter translate sensor data differently, how it handles noise is also subject to different algorithms.
Although it seemed less than obvious in this statement that RAW processing must be completed before editing with the NN plugin, but this would appear to be the case, since the plugin is not using RAW file, and the file returned is no longer subject to the normal edit controls used for RAW images?
The stand alone NN app does not read raw files. Just more options than the plug in. Once tif file is returned to Aperture environment, all the adjustments are available, except ones that has to do with raw conversion.
But when now going back over many existing projects and images to enhance via NN, the question is really to the difference between applying NN to the existing Versions, versus trying to back up to a point prior to adjustments having been applied that are not dependent upon RAW processing?
Why not just create new version from master, adjust white balance, then use NN. The plug-in tif file is also non-destructive and can apply all the Aperture controls.
What are the Pros and Cons of what was stated above: "using a RAW processor with plug-in support so they run Noise Ninja after the RAW processing step" insofar as processing new images?
    In most simplistic terms:
Pro: less noise in high iso images
Con: large tif files, leads to less details in the image
There is a tradeoff between retaining all the sharpness that you'd like versus getting rid of noise that degrade the image quality - it is a personal choice.

  • Noise Ninja crashes my PS CS6 (64 bit PC)

Noise Ninja crashes my PS CS6. What'e even worse is PS CS6 can NOT be restarted without restarting the computer first! As the noise filter in PS CS6 works really poorly, does anybody have a suggestion for software that works? I use the 64 bit version. No other problems - so far.

    steve963 wrote:
Way faster than NoiseNinja? What is way faster than 1 second? In any case, noise reduction in PS CS6 still sucks - BUT, in ACR it works VERY well. The secret is to KEEP your raw files.
Steve I was talking about ACR, which is why it is faster, because it saves an operation.  It is also a while since I used Noise Ninja because I have Topaz deNoise as part of their Bundle package, and while it is OK, it takes several seconds to do it's thing.
But if I was batching a large job, I would use Bridge and ACR, and sync as many images as I could reasonably get away with for the sake of speed.  I just can't get on with Lightroom.
I can't imagine why anyone would delete their RAW files after processing them.  Several people, including Noel IIRC, have spoken about going back to old RAW files with ACR7, and getting noticably more out of them.
I know HDDs are still at a premium, but they are still afordable.  I have 10Tb over 11 drives. That includes four WD USB3 My Book externals, but they are very nearly as fast as my (non raid) internals, and perfectly usable.

  • Noise Ninja Causing CS6 to Crash

I have read a previous post regarding this issue, but it did not apply to my problem, so here goes.
Attempting to run the Noise Ninja plug-in causes Photoshop to crash.
I have tried to run Noise Ninja on several 16-bit CR2 as Smart Object files (opened from ACR) and a 16-bit TIFF as Smart Object file (opened from Photoshop) and each time after the 'Profiling Image' step completes and the Noise Ninja dialog box opens, Photoshop crashes. I have tried using both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the plug-in (in there respective versions of Photoshop) and the same thing happens.
The Plug-ins have been installed properly using the manufacturer's installer.
I have tried rebooting my computer.
I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Noise Ninja.
    I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling CS6.
I haven't encountered any other issues.
Noise Ninja still works fine in CS5.

The root cause of this issue has been traced to an apparent bug in the public beta version of CS6.  Its been reported to Adobe and they are looking at it.    There were no issues with CS6 m.122 and this problem started with the public beta release (m.415).     Noise Ninja should not be crashing Photoshop because of this problem however.  It should merely report an error processing the image.    PictureCode will release an update very soon.  The update will fix the crash of CS6 and I expect it to have a workaround for the CS6 problem as well.

  • Noise Ninja Crashes Photoshop CS6

I copied the Noise Ninja Plug In from CS5.1 to CS6 but when I try to use it, CS6 crashes.
    Any suggestions/ideas.

Try reinstalling as Pierre suggests. If you manually just pulled the plug-in and dumped it in the plug-ins folder, you may have missed a resource file or messed with the Plug-in DRM.
Also, please submit all crash reports with your information and some details if you haven't already:

  • LR and Noise Ninja - Workflow suggestions??

Has anyone figured out a good workflow for this setup? I have a couple
hundred raw images that need NN processing. I would love to be able to
figure out a way to automate this.
    Thanks in advance

Personally, when I do batches of that size I don't need the NR to be perfect -- just better. I've been doing that using Noise Ninja in Bibble. I export from LR to hi res jpegs in a certain folder and then have LR open Bibble for all those images. I then use a hot-key'd batch that applies only NN and sharpening to all the images and then copies them to a separate folder. It's not real aggressive NR but it's a low effort routine that makes a big improvement. If a few key images warrant more attention, I do it more custom than that. If doing the NR on a jpeg is sufficient for you, you could set up something similar using PS or Elements but, for me, it doesn't pay to go the TIFF or PSD route on most of my images.

  • How do I switch Noise Ninja from Elements 8 to my newly downloaded Elements 11?

I previously used Elements 8 with the Noise Ninja plug in. Both are still installed on my PC. I recently downloaded Elements 11. Can I move the Noise Ninja plug in over to Elements 11 and HOW?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Grant

Copy your Ninja Plugin folder to Elemens 11 Plug-in folder .
The location of Plugin folder in Elements 11 is
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 11\Plug-Ins
As- If I have to copy my Nik software For Elements 11 from Elements 8
    Copy the Nik folder from-
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 8\Plug-Ins\Nik Software
    and Paste it under
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 11\Plug-Ins\

  • Aperture Noise and processing issues

So I've finally got down to processing the same Raw file of a Canon 1Ds and exporting it from Aperture as a .psd. I've taken the same raw processed in PhotoshopCS2 and saved as a .tif.
The shot is over a creek just after a snow. Gray water and trees covered with snow. I have to say, there is such an obvious inferior difference with Aperture full of color noise, color moire, even the image definition is worse. The photosho image is soooo much better that I must be doing something wrong, but I've been preparing images for prepress now for many years. The noise in the water is unacceptable. I could not turn this image in. I will have to do some other tests, but this really surprises me.

I saw this post in another thread as well, and trust me I am not trying to get an argument started. I only want information. I read reviews for all sorts of gear and sw, and sometimes I never see the same issues everyone else is seeing due to my experience or knowledge. So, I went to the ARS site, downloaded each set of files that was shot with the Nikon (not Canon since I don't own a Canon) and reviewed them to see if I could see the issues.
    Cat Photo
The Capture One image seems to have the least noise. Just at first glance, it seems to be the most appealing. It is softer, but less noisy than either ACR or Aperture.
Aperture and ACR seem to have equal noise, although the Aperture noise is different, seeming to have a bit of color (green) to it. But they seem close to me.
the Aperture image seems harsh in that is has edge enhancement or too much sharpening.
    Football Image
Again, the C1 image has the least noise and looks the "best" to me. There is still a great deal of noise in the black sky, but less than either of the other two.
Once again, the Aperture image, if zoomed into the QBs head, has noise that has green color to it.
Looking at ACR and Aperture side by side, ACR looks better to me, but it seems to be a color issue as well, so some of that might be correctable.
    Dog Image
To be perfectly honest, I saw no real differences in these images.
So the post said they were much worse, and from what I see, I don't see the dramatic differences that everyone is talking about. I see almost as much difference between C1 and ACR as the others.
I am not looking to get flamed, but I would like to know what others are considering dramtic flaws so I can get a better idea of what I am not seeing. I am not saying that is not the case, only that my less expereiced eye doesn't see it.
I am not a pro photographer, so I probably am missing something. But since there is a site that has some images we can all use for comparison, why not some objective talk about those images? It is easy to post "My images look horrible with Aperture but great with ACR" but lets use these images to point out to the lesser of us exactly what we are talking about.
And really, lets try to avoid 300% crops to prove the point.
    Chris
