Aperture not opening due to alleged old iPhoto Library

Dear all
I try to open Aperture and I am getting this error message:
What I do not understand:
I am using iPhoto 9.3.2 and the library is updated
I am using Aperture 3.3.2
I am keeping separate libararies for iPhoto and Aperture, so Aperture should not even try to use my iPhoto library
Even rebuilding the iPhoto Database did not help
Even opening the Aperture library by double-clicking on it in finder did render the same error
When I restart the computer and lock on as a different user, I can open Aperture as long as I do not open iPhoto. Trying to open Aperture after openening iPhoto results in the same error. The only way to open Aperture again is by locking back on as another user and opening Aperture. Having done that, all other users can use Aperture again.
Does anybody have any idea what to do?
I am using the latest MacBook Pro with OS X 10.7.4
Thanks and best regards,
Robert

Hi Robert,
the safest way to share an Aperture library is to put the library into an own disk partition or onto an external drive. This way you can set the" ignore ownership on this volume" flag. Then both can read and write to the library using the default permission setting that "repair permissions" creates.
Would it be possible for you to use an external drive or to partition your internal drive?
To set the "ignore ownership flag" select the external drive in the Finder and then press cmd-I (for File > Get Info). Unlock the padlock in the Info panel and disclose the "Sharing and Permissions" brick. The flag is at the bottom of the panel.
Your drive should be formatted MacOS X Extended to be used with Aperture and directly connected, via firewire, usb, thunderbolt, not a network volume.
If you cannot use a separate drive right now, try to set the  "Shared Folder" flag on the folder with the Library, but some posters have reported problems with videos in a shared folder.

  • A Pages file will not open due to index.xml not found, what is up with that?

I recently saved a file on Pages 5.5.2. on my IMac hard drive.  Now I find that on attempting to open it the file will not open due to index.xml not found.  Hoe do I correct this?

I have this issue, as well - although perhaps in a different content.  When I try to open a file I created in the previous version of Pages, I will frequently (but not always), received the "index.xml not found" message.  I am very concerned that I may lose access to some of these files.  The old Pages icon is still on my dashboard, although I've downloaded the new Pages (that icon only appears when I open a new document).  I thought I needed to upgrade the old documents to the new Pages, but this didn't work.  Does anyone have any ideas?  And, I'm not a techie - so you'll need to break it down for me.

  • I cannot open several pictures from my old iPhoto library which I saved on an external HDD.

    Hi,
I saved my old iPhoto library on an external HDD and successfully opened them in past several times. But now with iPhoto 11 v. 9.2.3 all I can see is a black triangle (image attached) for majority of my pictures and folder from my old iPhoto library on the external drive. Several times I tried rebuilding iPhoto library but that did not help.
I am runnig MAC OS X 10.6.8 with most recent updates.
Thanks in advance for yor help,
I must admit its highly frustrating. Sometime I feel, am I still using the same Apple product or it is something else .

that indicates a disconnect to the original photos - have you deleted any photos using the finder or run any clean up software?
If no then download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  and use the rebuild command in the free trial to create a new library leaving the existing one as is

  • HT5037 Difficulty moving old iPhoto library from 2008 (not sure which version of iPhoto it is) to new macbook pro running OSX Mavericks.

I tried downloading AND RUNNING the upgrader and I'm stuck in an infinite loop.  After running the upgrader from the utilities folder, it looks like things are working.  Then a window pops up asking me to launch iphoto to complete the upgrade.  After launching iphoto, iphoto goes back to the original error message that I need to download the upgrader.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the upgrader multiple times to no avail.  I've also tried dragging my iphoto library from the external hard drive it is housed on to many different areas before trying to launch the upgrader, none of them worked.  The external hard drive format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I also tried dragging the iphoto library folder in the pictures file onto my new Macbook right next to my new iphoto library folder.  This allowed me to open up iphoto (Yay!) but of course, none of the photos from my old iphoto library were in their, even when the old library was selected.
I've read what seems like hundreds of posts on this same issue, but can't seem to find a solution that works for me.  I want to simply transfer my iphoto library from an external hard drive (my old macbook just crashed, so this is the only option) to my new macbook, keeping the albums, slideshows, and organization intact.
I would appreciate any help or feedback.  Thank you in advance for reading this!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1, can't open old iPhoto Library

I have upgraded to iPhoto 9.5.1, but now I can't open one of my old iPhoto Libraries.  I tried selecting it while opening iPhoto, but the file is gray -- unselectable.  It was on an external harddrive, so I tried moving it onto my desktop.  No luck. Help, I need those pictures!  I don't know what else to try.  When I try to click on the library in Finder I get a message in a Terminal window.... I don't know what is going on.

If you don't have a backup of the library you can use this may work in getting your photos back:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

I purchased a new imac (4G, OS X 10.6.8) in Feb 2011 and thought my old iPhoto library transferred over. It wasn't. And I can't get iPhoto to open on my old mac. It says, "can't open your current version of iPhoto using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto". I don't think my old mac will support the newer version of iPhoto so I feel like I'm stuck (this is why I got a new mac -- cheaper than upgrading all my software, etc). Help! I really need to get to my old photos, and no, they are not backed up anywhere. Thanks.

    You have two options:
Run the Library on a machine that has the same version as the machine that was stolen.
    or
Recover the files from this library and start over from scratch.
    To recover the files:
Go to your Pictures Folder (or whereever you have the back up) and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Your originals are in the Masters folder.
Note this will only recover your photos as imported from you camera.

  • Old iphoto library from an old computer's hard drive doesn't open anymore

My old computer broke some time ago, but I got the hard drive saved with its iPhoto library. I used to be able to open the old iPhoto from the old computer's hard drive with my new computer connecting them, but now it says that the old iPhoto cannot be opened because I have to update to a newer version, but the only button I can press is 'quit'. So I don't know how to get a newer version of iPhoto to my old hard drive or how to get the pictures out of the old iPhoto. I have a separate iPhoto in my new computer.
When I press 'show content' of the old iPhoto, there are no pictures anywhere.
Please help, I have my old pictures there!
    Thank you!
    Best regards,
    Petra

I used to be able to open the old iPhoto from the old computer's hard drive with my new computer connecting them, but now it says that the old iPhoto cannot be opened because I have to update to a newer version, but the only button I can press is 'quit'.
Petra, do you mean, you opened the old iPhoto application from the old computer on your new computer or did you open the iPhoto Library?
If you have a newer iPhoto version on your new computer, try to open your old iPhoto Library with the newer iPhoto version on your new Mac.
What was the old iPhoto version on the old Mac, and which version do you have now? And which version of MacOS X?
If you now have iPhoto 9.5.1 on your new computer, launch this version while holding down the options key (sometimes called alt key). This will bring up the library chooser panel. Select the old library on your old drive.  iPhoto should offer to upgrade the library., unless your old library has been created by a very old iPhoto version.
If the old library had been created with iPhoto '08 or earlier, you need first to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader to prepare the library.
See this document: iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
After running the upgrader, proceed as described above.
