Aperture not recognizing keywords for smart album

Friends,
I've set up a smart album that contains images with a particular keyword. The smart album contains family pictures and I use it for my screensaver. I've done this for several years without incident.
Today, I noticed that the album only contained about six images (instead of the hundreds it previously contained). Baffled, I looked to see if the images that used to be in the smart album, but no longer were, still have the magic keyword. They do. If I add the keyword to an image again, it will be included in the smart album. However, there are hundreds of images with the keyword that the smart album is not picking up.
I'm running Ap3 with all updates.
Have any of you experienced this? I've repaired the library to no avail, and I'm currently rebuilding the library. Any other ideas?
Thanks!
Steve

I have had this happen. And, while I'm not sure why it happens, I've found that if you select "text" from within the smart album filter and enter your magic keyword, all works as it should. Totally baffled by the why's behind this issue.
Hope this helps!

  • IPhoto 9.4.3-keyword "" not working correctly in smart albums

Every May I work on the 5th Grade recognition slideshow (using Keynote) for our 5th grade students.  In iPhoto, I always give photos the checkmark keyword after I've placed that photo so that I know it's been added/used.  I have many smart photo albums with keywords like "5th graders 2012-2013" and others like the checkmark.
None of the smart albums seem to be recognizing and using the checkmark even though it's one of the smart album criteria.  For example, I have a smart album called
"5th grade-already used" which has the criteria Match All:  Keyword is "5th graders-2012-2013" and Keyword is "✔".  However, even after giving some photos the checkmark keyword, this smart album shows up empty.
Similarly, I have another smart album called "5th-Still to use" which has criteria Match All: Keyword is "5th graders-2012-2013" and Keyword is not "✔". The photos that I've placed the checkmark on are STILL showing up here.
These smart albums have always worked before.  Has anyone else noticed issues with the checkmark keyword not working properly?  It has to have happened with an update sometime in the past year.

When I went to open the library using iPhoto Library Manager, it had to upgrade the library to work with this version of iPhoto.
    That's normal.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Aperture Not Recognizing Duplicates When Importing From iPhone. PhotoStream is Involved.

Apple makes great software. Aperture is not some of it.
    Here's my setup:
'11 MacBook Air OS X Lion
    Aperture 3.2.2
    iPhone 4 ios 5.0
1.5 TB External Drive. Aperture Masters and Library reside there, separate from each other.
I keep my photos in a structure such as: Aperture Masters > Year > Month > Date > original_photo_name
I'm running into trouble with Aperture not recognizing what photos are duplicates when it comes time to import photos. My workflow is that I'll import photos every so often, leaving them on the iPhone, and delete them twice a year.
    ISSUE 1 (The Annoying One):
Aperture is showing a lot of photos that have already been imported even if I select "Don't Import Duplicates". Aperture has done this for a long time. I know that when it comes time to importing them, it doesn't import the duplicates, but this is just a sign that something doesn't work very well. (Maybe it's because I switched to an iPhone 4S and then back. I synced all my photos, and then back again to my iPhone 4, so the sequential number of the photos remained intact. I don't think that's the problem though.). This is just a minor annoyance that shows that Apple can suck at software (remember MobileMe?).
    ISSUE 2 (The serious one):
short version: Some photos on my iPhone won't sync to my Aperture library because it thinks they've been synced through PhotoStream. They are not in my Aperture Library or in my Aperture Masters in the filesystem. How can I fix this. What bloody file do I have to delete for Aperture to stop being confused?
longer explanation: When iOS 5 came out, I was excited by PhotoStream. I had enabled it on my MBA, through iPhoto (I hadn't installed Aperture on it yet, as I was using an iMac to manage my Aperture Library). I believe it synced a bunch of photos from my iPhone, but then I stopped using it on my mac. Left it on on my iPhone. Installed Aperture. I initially enabled PhotoStream but swiftly disabled it once I was not sure how it would deal with photos being uploaded from my mac etc - just seemed like too much magic was going on. I then proceeded to sync my iPhone, not importing duplicates, and it synced a bunch of photos, but didn't sync some of them, displaying the following message:
Any tips on how to fix this and be able to import those images would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. - I thought that iPhoto might be causing the problem. I checked there and there were some images imported through PhotoStream, but not some of the ones which were not imported on Aperture. Putting that another way: the iPhoto library accounted for some of the images that were not imported, but not all of them. I deleted the iPhoto Library and tried reimporting with Aperture. Still no luck.

I have precisely the same problem. Very annoying. Worked fine with iPhoto, borked with Aperture 3.

  • Downloading artwork - "could not get artwork for some albums"

This might have been addressed before, but I browsed the forum and couldn't find a thread. Sorry if it's been gone over several times.
I live in Turkey and I've added albums to my iTunes. I checked the box in the Get Info next to Artwork and I selected Get Album Artwork from the Advanced tab. It scans through all the albums and then says "could not get artwork for some albums." "Some" albums means all of them actually. And the error tab details say "artwork not available." I also tried getting artwork by right clicking on a single album but I get the same error. Before it was a 609 error. Now it just says not available.
I logged out of the store, quit iTunes, loaded it again, re-signed in to the store and tried to get artwork that way, but got the same result. No artwork. The albums are things like Let It Be, Allman Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald... Albums that should certainly have artwork available.
    I'm using Windows Vista.
Has anyone had and conquered this problem? Any ideas on what I should do? I have 300+ albums, so getting the cover art from wikipedia would be a bit tedious. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give!

    Hello, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are your songs from Audio CDs or iTunes Store? If not you may need to manually find the album artwork for them as these songs may not be listed in the iTunes Store database for your region.
iTunes: Album art may not download properly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1815
iTunes will only download album artwork for songs that it can find in the iTunes Store. iTunes will check each song in your iTunes library and attempt to match it up with a song in the iTunes Store. If the data matches, iTunes will download the album artwork from the iTunes Store and add it to the song in your iTunes library. If iTunes does not find a particular song's artwork in the iTunes Store, you will not see an alert message. iTunes simply does not download artwork for that song.

  • IPhoto not recognizing keywords created in CS3

I've added keywords to files (both psds and jpegs) I've created in Photoshop and Bridge (CS3). If I look at the file info in Finder, the keywords are there. But when I look at the info of the file in iPhoto, the keywords don't show. Also when I create a Smart Album to match the keywords, nothing shows.
    Any ideas?

You shouldn't reverse engineer answers from your initial hypothesis
Not what I did. I searched on Google and found only references to jpeg and tiff supporting IPTC and none to psd. Have you tried that? I'm not sure that the Finder supports IPTC data, only limited Exif.
Why would photoshop be writing for the benefit of the Apple operating system when it's cross platform?
Because they're nice people? Or because both Oses support basic metadata comments?

  • Smart Settings for Smart Album

I have created a Smart Album to gather all my RAW images. These constitute about half of my 1900-image library.
For some reason, only 30+ images show in the Smart Album
I configured the Smart Settings HUD as follows:
    Source = Library
Search Criteria = Any (of the following specifications)
    Text = .NEF
    File Type = RAW
So, where did I go wrong?

To find all your raw images, the following shoud suffice:
    Source = Library
Search Criteria = Any (of the following specifications)
    File Type = RAW
The text rule is unnecessary, and if you are looking for a specific raw format, it will be quicker to use the the rule
    File Type = RAW
    Aperture: Filename includes NEF
That will be quicker, because not all text will be searched.
But your own rule should work. Have you checked, if you have any additional filters set in the search fields of the Browser and Inspector?

  • Keyword and Smart Album question

I have a keyword named "sunset"  that I use for all of my sunset pictures. In the keyword HUD it says I have 178.
I then created a smart album to display all of the sunset pics. Under the Keywords heading I have tick boxes for "sunset" and beneath it is a tick box for "sunset (time)". If I tick just "sunset"  it displays 134 items.  If I tick just "sunset (time)" it shows 219 items. If I tick both it shows 347 items.   Both contain the keyword "sunset" and there are no obvious duplicates.
Can anyone tell me what's going on?  I don't see a (anything) behind any other keywords.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    John

    John,
there is a predefined keyword "Sunset" in the "Photo Specs > Time" list of keywords.
When you added your own keyword "Sunset" you created a duplicate. Aperture distinguishes the two instances of "sunset" by adding the category "Time" to the predefined sunset, since it is defined as a subcategory of "Photo specs > Time > Sunset".
When you search in the Keywords HUD for Sunset, you should see this:
You could merge your sunset with the predefined sunset keyword, if you want to get rid of this duplicate. Or rename your keyword to my_sunset, or similar.

  • Aperture not recognizing Canon G-10 RAW Files?

All of a sudden Aperture is not recognizing my G-10 RAW files. It did yesterday, but not today. I just downloaded the new aperture update thinking that might change things, but no go. Just says "unsupported file format"
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Shane

What is your import workflow? Are you (appropriately) uploading images first to the hard drive before importing into Aperture? Was the card (appropriately) reformatted in-camera before shooting the new batch of pix?
Direct camera-to-Aperture or card-to-Aperture workflows can be problematic, as can using the computer for erasing card images or reformatting cards.

  • "Device Not Recognized" - but for only one of three iPods?

    Hi-
I am hoping to get some help, as I am stumpted. Here are the symptoms:
    1) I have been successfully syncing two Nanos and a Mini on the same XP machine for sometime
    2) One of the Nanos now gets a "device not recognized" message upon connecting, while the other two iPods will still connect just fine.
    3) I've tried charging it fully (and running it down), the five R's, putting it into disk mode (updater doesn't recognize it's attached so can't restore), and installing iTunes on another machine (other machine doesn't recognize it, either).
    4) The problem Nano charges and plays just fine on its own.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Try downloading and installing iPod Updater 2006-01-10 (the version previous to the 2006-03-23) and restoring your iPod with that.

If your iPod encounters difficulties being recognized with this updater, put it into disk mode first:

  • Aperture not applying keywords to all selected images

OK, so I've been categorizing for a couple of days now, and everything's going fine. I'm going through around 200gb of files, applying keywords to each one.
Today, I opened Aperture and tried to start where I left off. I selected a bunch of files and dragged a keyword from the Keyword HUD to the selection, just as I've been doing all along. For some reason, today Aperture only applies the keyword to the image I'm on when I release the mouse, not the others in the selection.
Any clue what's going on here?

Ignore this post--I went through the archives and found a reference to "Primary Only," which turned out to be my problem.

  • Aperture not recognizing duplicates

When importing images into the library Aperture 2.1 does not recognize any of the 25000+ images on an external hard drive already imported as duplicates, although I ticked the "do not import duplicate" checkbox. This problem only appeared after I disconnected the external hard drive where the master images are stored and then applied keywords to all images. I did not edit the images. Rebuilding the library did not fix the problem. Deleting key words also did not make any difference. Any suggestions what to try next ?

News from Apple Tech Support, after I had to email and ask for an update....."currently they are looking into it. only status update I have"
    This is what I sent:
Photo 01 shows IMG_3316 already in Aperture and where it is in Aperture Library.
Photo 02 shows IMG_3316 (copy) in photo folder in finder. There are over 6000 photos in this folder. This is 1 of 10 folders I have to go through and import into Aperture.
Photo 03 shows IMG_3316 INFO from Ap Library and INFO from 01 All Photos folder. I had to drag a copy of IMG_3316 out of the Aperture Library into a separate folder to get the correct INFO to show. The Green and Red show the only differences between the 2 files.
Photo 04 shows 'Do Not Import Duplicates' checked and 'Move Files' selected. IMG_3316 (as well as the other over 500 photos in the original shoot already in Aperture) is(are) still available for Import. So duplicates are still imported and show up in the import window, when they already exist in Aperture.
Photo 05 Duplicate IMG_3316 in Aperture. The only difference is the new file is Referenced. Aperture won't let you Move Files directly into Aperture Library. So to move files they have to be Referenced first. However, as I have found out, Aperture won't move files from any other drive (internal or external) that the ApLibrary isn't on already first. But, the 'Move' button can still be selected?? If the file will not move, then why is the button active??
Metadata for both files. Again, the only difference is the second file is referenced (see Badges).
After spending over an hour on Tech Support, I could almost feel the TS guy rolling his eyes, I had to put this together to prove that Aperture will import duplicates. I don't have time to wait for an answer (fix really), so all I can do now is import everything, then go back and delete all my dupes.....It will be fun when I actually get to use Aperture.

  • Aperture not recognizing serial number

I went to the Apple Genius bar for help today and they wiped everything off and restored my OS.  I am now trying to put the Aperture software on that I bought 2 years ago, and it's saying the serial number is not valid.  What do I do?
    Thanks

There has just an update been released, Aperture 3.4.3, that is supposed to fix serial number issues, try if updating helps.
Is your Aperture version an upgrade from Aperture 2? Then you need to enter both serial numbers.
And checck the correct typing - sometimes letters can be confused, the letters in the serial numbers are all upper case, see Troubleshooting Professional Application Serial Numbers and see if that helps.
If all fails, contact Apple for an
Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers . You will need to provide a proof of purchase.

  • Album art displays in ITunes but not on iPod for some album

Hi, I have setup album art on iTunes for my ipod, and in itunes all the art shows correctly.
However the iPOD just displays album art for only some of the albums, not all...
This is really frustrating Apple. How can I report or fix this problem?
    Thanks
    Simon

I have THE EXACT same problem. Except, I added all album art by hand, to my ipod playlist after hand-selecting all 356 songs to my nano. Only to find that when I attempted to transfer the album art to my nano even after checking and unchecking the album art option, it does not work. Does anyone know if the album art needs to be added to itunes before songs are put onto the nano?

  • Aperture Not Recognizing iPhone Jpegs

Has anyone else had a problem with Aperture having issues with jpegs from iPhones while having no problems with jpegs out of other cameras?
The problem is characterized by selected jpegs turning back and displaying a triangle with exclamation mark and  words declaring that the image is an unsupported format. It also appears to affect some (but not all) iPhone images at time of import leading to the inability to import batches of images from the iPhone while having no problems with either RAW or jpegs from my Panasonic GH2
This problem has happened to me twice now and the only solution that works is rebuilding the Aperture Library.
I find it strange that it affects iPhone images only and wonder if this is a known Aperture issue or not.

Upon further testing, it looks like maybe the photos I took with "Camera Genius", a third party camera app don't save the camera model as part of the metadata. Looks like only the photos taken with the actual Apple camera app will log the camera as an iPhone.
So, question #2. How can I change the camera/model metadata (painlessly please ) of those that are "unknown"?
