Aperture on a 4 years old Mac book.
Hi,
A would like to open my *.NEF files of my camera (D5100 Canon). For this I have seen that I need the last updates of Apreture but I only have the 10.5.8 update of Mac OS X, and I have seen that I need the Mac OS X Lion update so the Mac OS X Snow Leopard also.
My Mac Book is 4 years old :
Processor: 2,1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 1 Go 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I know that the last update of Aperture can run on my computer but I would like to know if with the new exploitation system and the last update of Aperture my computer will run normally or if it will be slower. For the while I don’t have Aperure at all.
Thanking you in advance for your answer.
An excellent RAM vendor is OWC:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/Pro/Core2/
They will also answer questions, provide tools, etc. regarding the feasibility of your RAM upgrade. Great folks that I have bought from for decades.
Upgrading the RAM to maximum is essential. Once RAM is upgraded to 3 GB I believe your Mac will run 10.7.4, and OS 10.7.4 will convert D5100 NEF files with or without Aperture.
Note that in general newer versions of apps and OSs take advantage of more RAM. This is a good thing because RAM is cheap and designing around more RAM improves performance. However it is not so good for old laptops trying to run state-of-the-art images management applications like Aperture. OS 10.7 uses more RAM than previous OS versions, so when running Aperture with only 3 GB RAM I suggest:
• Try to run Aperture by itself. For sure quit apps like browsers when running Aperture.
• Restart before Aperture work sessions to clear possible memory leaks
• and/or switch from 64-bit operation to 32-bit operation (which will make some additional RAM space available). See Switching Kernels:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I believe that with 3 GB RAM it will all work, but my own old laptop is on 10.6.8 so I have no personal experience with 10.7 on an old MB. My 2011 MBP runs Aperture 3.2, OS 10.7.4 and 8 GB RAM and it rocks.

I recently update my 4 year old mac book pro to Yosemite. I am now getting a pixilated log inn scene from time to time. What do I need to do?
how often does this happen for you?

My 5 year old Mac book won't turn on. It seems to be holding a charge. In the past 3 months I've replaced the power source, battery, & had a full diagnostic run on it.
Tanks dominic23, do you think that the dead battery can affect the macbook performance? I do alot of video work, and since the battery died i cannot do a smooth preview of my videos in premiere cs6, seems like a memory problem but it worked fine before the battery issue.

Should I download mountain lion ? I have a 2 year old mac book pro
This isn't really a case where we can tell you what to do. You have to tell us more about your computer use and needs and we can make suggestions.
Do you need it?
2 years old means you're probably running OS 10.6-something. Do you have any really old software you use? You may have to update some of that too. sometimes people spend a few dollars on Mountain Lion and then hundreds on associated requirements such as hardware upgrades, or a lot of software that needs newer versions.
Are you planning on buying a new computer in the next year or two? -
The question says it all. I found a laptop sleeve, but I don't know what the average size (in inches) of a 4 year old macbook. Is it about 10 or 12"?
Correct. All MacBooks ever made only came in 13" screen size models.

Would you please help me in cleaning my two years old mac book pro
my computer is two years old. i vist many sites and as a result it has
gradually become very slow.is there any advice please? You are posting in the developer forum. This is a quiet corner of the forums where few people will see your post. If you give us some details about your setup, we can get your post moved to a more appropriate forum.
A good way to do that eould be to try a little program I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.
The output from EtreCheck will say what forum your post need to go into and, perhaps, what your problem is.

130 Gb of the possible 248Gb are in use. Is there a reliable way of identifying and getting rid of unused or duplicate files to clear out some room and speed up the processor?
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Lion Cache Cleaner, CockTail, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Backuplist
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
iBackup
JaBack
Silver Keeper
MimMac
Retrospect
Super Flexible File Synchronizer
SuperDuper!
Synchronize Pro! X
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Adding RAM makes it possible to run more programs concurrently. It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster. What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent. It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs. -
5 year old mac book running slow
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to improve the performance? Or is it just because it is outdated?
Thanks DonnaThe MacBook should be able to run as fast as it did when
new, if it had the original content, system, applications &
had the same amount of free or unused hard disk drive
space compared to used capacity, as when it was new...
And the same internet. Web page content takes longer
and has more stuff to load, so that is slower acting now
since it wasn't as busy some years ago. My Macs are
all older models and run a few versions behind new.
You could check the information on how to look into what
your computer has in it, and get a few ideas on what a
user should do about their accumulated saved content.
A third-party gimmick to cleanup or modify the computer
so you may think it could be faster, is a false economy.
Those usually damage the system and can put adware
or malware into the OS X, so it runs much slower overall.
See what the author of this site says about slow macs...
•Mac Performance Guide - The Safe Mac:
http://www.thesafemac.com/mpg/
Sometimes when visiting web pages with poor content or
quality control, they may not be secure or may allow bad
content to accompany downloads of what may seem OK.
So the problem with adware or bad content arises and
that can be running in the background. To see or try to
identify that kind of thing, you'd have to be interested in
directly acting on it; and not rely on some mackeeper or
other garbage product that won't fix it. A fair look into
ways of removing 'adware' and other issues can be found
in TheSafeMac site. There also is an adware removal tool.
See these other guides at the same home page:
•Tech Guides - The Safe Mac:
http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/
A performance increase may be had by keeping an off-
computer archive of things you want to keep, then delete
or Trash the originals; an externally enclosed hard drive
can be helpful. Such a device also makes a good backup.
Not just one for Time Machine, but another (or two) so
you can choose to make a fully bootable system clone;
w/ utilities such as CarbonCopyCloner or Superduper.
The amount of RAM installed in your computer may be
upgraded, if not already to the maximum, and this is a
way to increase actual performance if you have larger
applications and a later OSX than the Mac shipped with.
What is the total RAM capacity installed in the MacBook?
If your MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008) is this:
Model Identifier
MacBook5,1
Model Number
A1278
EMC
2254
Then the total upgrade amount of RAM should be this:
Maximum Memory
8.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots
2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
If you were to upgrade the capacity of HDD storage...
Hard Drive Interface
3.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)
...or get an SSD instead, this info is helpful.
{the above, from http://mactracker.ca database, a free download}
More RAM and an upgrade to a solid state drive, could make the MB5.1
scream along OK. However it may not be adequate to run a later OS X
than Mavericks, if you even needed to go there. Some older Macs do
OK with OS X 10.9.3, others act like they'd prefer Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
A few good sources of upgrade hardware can be found through these
mac-centric online vendors, who offer Mac-tested products... Crucial
and macsales (OWC) have sites and upgrade parts. Also information
on how to perform some of the upgrades. iFixit.com has repair guides
that may be helpful to see what one may be up against to upgrade.
So there are a few things to consider, to clear out your saved stuff and
make an external hard drive a home for libraries of music, photo, video
and documents; some libraries can be used directly by their application.
When an application can use files that way, the duplicates in the Mac
can be removed, those Libraries that can be huge need not be internal.
Be sure to read up in the Support database before moving libraries.
There likely is a ton more to know, but it is better to learn about it than
find out something wasn't too hard to know, before an issue arose.
Good luck & happy computing! -
Migrated Aperture 3 upgrade from old Mac Book Pro to new Mac Book Pro. Can't open Aperture on new machine because I don't have the original serial number for Aperture 2 program originally installed on the old machine. What is the best solution to this situation
Call Apple and make a appointment.
You have 3 months of care and up to 3 years with paid AppleCare, let them handle it and bring everything in.

I have bought a new Mac Book Pro, and I need to know how I can move Aperture from my old Mac Book to the new one..
It begins with: F-285-NER-151-QBQ-and continues with 5 more 3 or 4 letters/numbers..
Yes, that is the number. And what version of Aperture have you installed? The same version as on your old Mac?
But it don´t work on my new Mac...
In what way does it not work? Does it require you to enter a licence number for Aperture 2 as well? That will be necessary, if your serial number is an upgrade serial number. Then you will have to enter all previous numbers as well.
Or does Aperture not accept the number as correct? Then check the spelling; some letters are easily confused like "I" and "1" and "O" and "0". Do not use the number pad to enter the numbers.

What is wrong with my 2 month old Mac book pro retina?
I bought a new 13 inch Mac book pro Retina at the end of May 2013. I have been to the apple store and called apple care several times. Now things are very bad. It would crash and give me a white screen every so often but over the last week things have gotten very bad. It will crash with the white screen, browsers and applications all close unexpectedly - it started with firefox then safari, then mail then face book, then adobe and finally iphoto and picassa. I did send in the reports. Also if I had a picture in i-photo my picassa program is set up to grab all pictures - recently any pictures that have been grabbed it says the files are corrupted. I keep having trouble with the air port utility in that it can't find the wireless network and or the time capsuel even though it can be wireless or plugged in by ethernet. I called apple care and got this very nice tech guy and he tried many different fixes and said he thought the hard drive would need to be replaced so got an appointment to take my computer in. They ran two tests and said everything is fine with the computer it must be the software. So now I'm supposed to get apple care to help me try and save all my data on flash drives! Can't back it up on time capsuel cause he said it would just back up the problem. So this seems overwhelming and I'm so upset. Well, then I thought about it and my old mac book in which all the data and software was transferred from hasn't been erased as I was having so many issues I hadn't done that yet. So my question is if it was the software, wouldn't it be making my older mac book do the same thing? What is wrong with my New Computer? As of tonight, I can't even open anything it gives a quick flash of trying to open and closes so the computer is totally useless - so no idea how to get the data off that is most recent. Apple says they cannot help cause it is a software program but now I have a 2 month old computer whish is useless. Any thoughts?
Call Apple and make a appointment.
