Aperture on G5 with GeForce 6600 or GeForce 7800 GT

Hi,
Can anybody tell me how much faster Aperture is on G5 dual-core 2.3 with the GeForce 7800 GT compared to the standard GeForce 6600 on this machine?
JO

  • Dual 20" ACD with Geforce 6600

Hi, is anyone here using dual 20" ACDs with the 6600? I have the stock 6600 in my dual-core 2.3. I read in another thread that performance wasn't great, but that was in relation to Aperture.
What's performance like otherwise? I'm thinking in terms of Final Cut and After Effects, applications that aren't GPU-intensive, but experience with similar would be useful.
    Thanks!

The main issue with driving two displays is that it divides the video RAM between the displays. So, your 128MB card acts like two 64MB cards. This isn't likely an issue unless you're playing games or doing something that needs to load textures onto the video card (e.g., Aperture, Motion).
There shouldn't be a noticeble difference in Final Cut since, as you know, it isn't currently GPU accelerated. After Effects, on the other hand, can use the GPU to accelerate previews, depending on the version of AE that you have.

  • GeForce 7800 GT vs GeForce 6600

    Hi,
Can anybody tell me how much faster Aperture is on G5 dual-core with the GeForce 7800 GT compared to the standard GeForce 6600 on this machine?
    PM G5 dual core 2.3 6600   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I realize that this is a 7800 vs 6600, but just wanted to add......
A buddy of mine came over with his MBP (ATI X1600 video card) with Aperture installed. The sliders on the MBP were much smoother than my Quad (Nvidia 6600) as well as scrolling thumbnails. The Loupe tool also reacted better, but still had some lag time, although not as jerky as my Quad.
I have an .aplibrary on an external LaCie 500GB with FW 400/800. I connected it to my friends MBP (FW 400 only) and ran some tests with the Adjustments HUD and scrolling. I had 'Create new version with adjustment' checked in prefs.
On the MBP, there was a slight delay (very, very slight) when creating a new version (instantaneous with its internal HDD) due to the speed of the external drive. However, the adjustment sliders were still much smoother than using the same external drive on my Quad (connected with FW 800).
I could go on and on, but the point is this.....
The Nvidia 6600 is a DOG of a card with Aperture. It has since been removed from the spec sheet on this page....
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=8 D19F826&nplm=MA438Z%2FA
....and is only a minimum requirement on this page....
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs.html
Why it is on one page and not the other only Apple can tell us.
The better question is "What is Apple going to do?". There are many of us that bought the new Quad, when it was first announced, with the Nvidia 6600. We have been left out in the cold. We were given a spec sheet that was wrong and no we are told that there are, NO UPGRADES!!
In my order, the only other vidio card option was the $1650 Quadra card (too much). The Nvidia 7800 wasn't offered until after my Mac was shipped.
Aperture was in the same order with my Quad, so Apple knew what I was getting and why I was getting it (Photo work). Yet 6 months later, Apple has yet to contact any of us with this issue.
Yes, I tried customer relations. They offered me $60 off on a $200 purchase. Basically, spend $140 more in our store, STFU and go away.
Joe, thanks for the 1.1 update, but my $5300 system is a 'Pig' running Aperture as compared to my friends $2800 MBP. And my friend can take his computer out anywhere he goes!!

  • Graphics Corruption in Some Apps - Problem with Geforce GT750

    Hi
I am recently facing a graphics corruption problem with my 2013 MBPr. Yesterday I noticed that the window that shows the mail in Mail.app suddenly showed just some noise (just some strange colors). I restarted the app and it was gone. Then I installed a game named "Tales from the Borderlands". On the menu of the game I noticed the corruption again. Every time I would exit and rerun the game, the distortion would randomly change. Here are some examples:
The problem appeared throughout the game too.
Then I forced "Integrated Only" using a gfxCardStatus to use Intel Iris Pro instead of Geforce GT750. I started the game and the problem was gone. I tried some more times again by switching GPUs and every time I noticed that the problem is with Geforce GT750 and Intel Iris Pro has no problem.
Any ideas what is causing the problem and what should I do? Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Tormirez,
I can't believe my eyes.. I actually was afraid this might happen.
Since I've been following the 2011 MBP forum after i had my MBP repaired (reflow by someone near Antwerp, Belgium), I've been learning some specific things about the very likely nature of these GPU issues.
All these issues seem to be related to the replacement of leaded solder by nearly pure tin solder + not soldering according to the best profile (temperature vs time).
The factor of time saving = money saving may very well play a role here.
When you consider the nature of that leaded solder problem versus the soldering profiles, it's not hard to imagine that the problem isn't just in the 2011 model range, but may actually have started FROM that range...! I've already heard that some 2012 models also failed in a similar way.
It may all be quite logical; tin solder needs a roughly 60ºC higher temperature to get into full liquid state then leaded solder.
As the cheapest way to produce boards is probably rolling entire boards through ovens, melting the parts on it, it would require very precise monitoring of temperatures UNDER the CPU and GPU, to be SURE you have a full flow going on.
But, at the same time, as you're cooking ALL components around 240ºC, they may have chosen not to stay at this temperature long enough. Or, maybe they stop at 240ºC, while 242ºC might be the minimum required temperature to guarantee full flow.
Etc.. It's a very complicated mix of factors that determines if small or large batches of board could contain errors at all or not.
But it may at least be called "bizarre" that these solder errors are found in tens of thousands 2011 MBPs, but also in 2012 models, and in the PS4 and also other brand Windows PCs!!
If you want to test your GPU hard, download GpuTest OSX x64 0.7.0 from ( geeks3d . com / gputest ) and run the FurMark based stress test on HD resolution for 30-60 mins straight, then turn your machine off completely for 15-30 mins (until it's really cold, put it down on some cold stone floor might help), then repeat several times.
If the same problem would be hidden in there as in the 2011 models, this is the way to get it triggered soon.
If you ask me, this might be the first report of the same problem in the 2013 series.....
Question; do you game a lot? If you answer yes, then it would pretty much make a connection to this similar problem I think!
I'm curious about the results of the stress test!

  • Lighting effects filter not available on PScc - using windows 8.1 with GeForce GTX 680 graphics card

I have Photoshop cc and Lightroom 5.5.  My computer runs windows 8.1, 64 bit, with GeForce GTX 680 graphics card.
I am trying to use the lighting effects filter, but it is grayed out so I cannot select it.
Can you tell me what I need to change in order to use the lighting effects filter?

This is the Lightroom forum. I don't use the lighting effects very often in Photoshop. But if I recall correctly, it will only work on 8-bit images.

I've tried to set Raytrace 3D in AE CC 2014 with GeForce GTX 970 and i get this error
    Any fix soon?

It's better to skip the ray-traced renderer altogether since the AE team is no longer working on developing it.

  • MSI Geforce 7800 GTX with MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT in SLI?

Hi. I bought the MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT a few months ago with the intention of buying a second to run in SLI. Now i can't seem to find anywhere that sells it at a decent price. Originally i bought it from www.ebuyer.co.uk but they have discontinued it.

  • Would two 6600 gt's be better than 1 geforce 7800?

i have 1 6600 sli gt card in right now. i was wondering if i should get a second 6600 or just go out and buy the 7800. Would getting another 6600 double the power that i have with 1 6600? Or would getting 1 7800 be better than two 6600's? Thank you

That's the problem with this type of scenario and why I loath what comes out of the tech bunghole so often. This technology is nothing new and will probably fade like the last time. With more powerful GPU's and more on-board RAM, not to mention dual GPU's coming, and what's already being touted, I am not surprised by the time games and apps catch up to the current hardware, you will have, once again, outdated hardware as always. . On paper it's dramatic increases, but in reality (real world) not much changes. In other words, the numbers to cash expenditures aren't proportional to the user experience in my opinion. Now if you want bragging rights, or you're a benchmark whore, then have fun. I've had lots of fun myself with it, I'm just happy with respectable performance from my computer nowadays.
I can still play games at acceptable frame rates with my 5950 on a socket A motherboard, but it's hard to go back to that when you have a system like mine sitting next to it. And mine isn't even that fast compared to what you see floating around here.
My next setup won't be SLI either.
My father always said, you can't polish a turd, somehow it still manages to happen!

  • GeForce 7800 GT OC from BFG Technologies

My question is a bit different. I got a GeForce 7800 Gt OC, overclocked, coming for Christmas. It says on the box - for Mac OS X and Windows XP, 2000. Are the drivers already installed in the Dual Core G5 with PCI Express? Does anyone know for sure if this card will work? I will need to send it back if it doesn't. No where on the bfgtech.com website does it mention anything about it actually working in a new dual core with PCI Express. My wife will be so upset if I have to send it back. I needed it to use Aperture because the GeForce 6600 isn't fast enough.
Dual Core G5/2.3 GHz. with PCI Express   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It says on the box? Hmm.
For a graphics card to work on a Mac, it must have a Mac software drivers and Mac compatible firmware. Since Apple includes the nVidia GeForce driver in Mac OS X, the issue is firmware.
It's possible to put both Mac and PC firmware in the same card. ATI did it with one card (Radeon 9600 Pro). But the GeForce 7800 GT or GTX for Windows PC does not come with a combination firmware.
Apple flashes the GeForce and Quadro cards sold on their site with proprietary firmware. The only way to get your overclocked PC compatible GeForce 7800 GT to work is if you extract the firmware from a Mac compatible 7800 GT and flash the PC compatible card with the Mac firmware.
Even if you ignore the proprietary intellectual property issue, the currrent firmware dumper for nVidia cards (Graphiccelerator) is currently unable to dump the firmware from the GeForce 7800 GT.
If nVidia ever releases multi-platform firmware, I'll be first in line to buy a 7800 GTX from BFG only I want the one overclocked to 580MHz core clock speed. Until then, let's hope Apple releases the 7800 GT as a kit (or ATI releases a retail Radeon X1800 XT for the Mac).

  • GeForce 7800 GTX... the best card for a PCIe G5 Power Mac?

I have started out on the rocky road to upgrade the graphics card on my Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz running Mac OS X 10.5.8. The standard card, a GeForce 6600, does not do justice to this wonderful computer, and struggles with any serious video work.
The first step is easy – deciding on the best card. A little Googling shows that the GeForce 7800 GTX wins hands down over the competition.
The next needs patience – these cards appear from time to time on eBay; I will need a 512 MB PCI-e version (not 256 MB) as I am running 10.5.
I've waited a month or two, put in a winning bid and the card has arrived. Now all I need is the code to flash the ROM to make it work in myG5. Not so fast! I'll need a 128kb ROM chip! The idea of using a soldering iron terrifies me, so I'll have to find someone, who does this sort of thing for a living, to remove the 64kb ROM from my 7800 GTX and solder on a 128kb ROM.
But what's is the right spec/manufacturer/supplier for the 128 kb ROM?
If I am lucky my friend with the soldering iron may know. If not, I'm stuck. I've not been able to find this information anywhere on the Internet.
Now all I need is the right code for the ROM. It seems that there are two versions that people have used: one, which seems quite common, is lightly edited Quadro FX 4500 ROM code which does not use the full power of the 7800 GTX, which after flashing reports itself as a FX 4500; the other, which seems to be as rare as gold dust, has been fine-tuned to use the 7800 GTXs full potential. Cards flashed with this version report correctly as 7800 GTX. I really want this optimised code, but neither version is available from any of the usual places.
    Can anyone please help?

Many thanks to japamac, who kindly sent me an e-mail which put me on the right track re finding the ROM code, editing it and flashing.
I also now know that I no longer have to worry about soldering ROM chips. Yippee! The 7800 GTX code has been 'shrunk' to fit on a 64kb ROM.

  • Correct rom for Geforce 7800 GTX for Mac G5?

I just got my hands on a Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX 512 and would like to flash it to work on my Quad G5. I know it is floaing around out there somewhere in our Ether-Space. Would some kind soul please share? Thanks

I recently acquired a Late 2005 PowerMac G5 2.3 Dual Core. It came with the sluggish GeForce 6600. I too am interested in flashing a 7800 GTX with a ROM for Mac.
Will any brand 7800 GTX qualify? I understand there may be a problem with cards having different ROM sizes. Could anyone list specific brand cards they would recommend for this purpose? I know I shouldn't expect to find any new ones. I will look in all the usual places.
Also, is it important to get the GTX and not the GT?
    Thanks.

  • PowerMac G5 Quad GeForce 7800 GTX 512mb or Quadro 4500 FX

Hey, best regards for all users. I have a question about changing graphics card. I'll be gratefull for all help.
    I have PowerMac G5 Quad Late 2005 - M9592LL/A and OS X Leopard 10.5.8.
My card is GeForce 7800GTX 512MB and Quadro fx4500 model p348.
I'm looking for ROM for this cards for Mac G5. I want to change 6600 for 7800GTX 512MB or Quadro. Cards tested on PC are working.
Anyone can help ? I can't find any info about ROM for this cards.
    Thanks all !

Both the X1900 (R580) and the 7800 GTX (G70) are capable GPUs on advanced cards, both targeting and supporting Shader Model 3.0. 3D was a focal point in development for either card.
Approaches for shader implementation are very different between the two cards.
Arguements for either abound, but, 3D performance will be a defining factor to show shader prowess.
Architecturally, the cards are very different, but, in the end, memory bandwidth, an important performance feature, is highest with the 7800 GTX; 54.4 GB/s vs. 38 GB/s for the Mac Edition Radeon.
The next X19xx card, the X1950, almost doubled memory bandwidth over the X1900.
I know guys that use flashed X1950 (512 MB) cards really like them.
Support of DirectX 9 and Shader Model 3.0 make either card more than is necessary for OS X Core Image and OpenGL requirements.
You bring up a very important point regarding application specific performance.
Games are one form of benchmark, but not always indicative of real world performance.
In Photoshop, CS4, the 7800 GTX is a fully supported card, whereas the X1900 (256 MB) card is not supported. The 512 MB version of the X1900 is supported, but doesn't help owners of the Mac Edition.
There are pros and cons with either card, eventually driver and OpenGL support being the defining point.
Early driver issues with the X1900 in OS X and a relatively short retail availability likely affect the lack of empirical data on the cards performance.
The following, though comparing a X1900XT (not the little brother X1900GT which is the G5 version) with a Geforce 7800 GTX on platforms other than Mac, the comparisons do show pro oriented application performance.
Though not necessarily applicable to OS X and PPC Macs, I thought it to be an interesting set of tests.
    http://ixbtlabs.com/articles2/cpu/nvidia-vs-ati-on-amd-and-intel.html
Either card is great, either is way better than the 6600, and, as you point out, availability is an important factor.

  • Geforce 7800 GT or Ati Radeon X800 XT?

    Hey Tom,
I just got my Quad with the 7800GT and it works very well with C4D, there are some things within c4d you can do to speed up the viewport which can be found in the manual, but so far so good and no complaints. I don't know much about the ATI card but the Geforce works great.
