APERTURE OR LIGHTROOM????please help!

i know this question has been asked a million times, but i want to know the pro and cons from each software. I have a Nikon D200, i usually dont print a lot of my photos, they are mostly for web albums and such. Please note: I am a new Mac user and there is a part of me that tells me to stick with Aperture but I cant ignore such name as Adobe....please help!

I am a very recent convert to Mac, after being a life long PC user and Mac hater (for over 20 years). I must say my Mac Pro tower and MacBook Pro laptop have transformed my photography work-flow. I typically shoot compressed raw images on my Nikon D200's
I presently use both, I first started with Lightroom 1.1 which was okay, until I got Aperture 2 which I quickly fell in love with as it felt very intuitive to use.
But I have recently installed Lightroom 2.2 and I must say that the 'Presets' function is great, especially the 'User Preset' combined with the great site www.LightroomKillerTips.com which has loads of 'Preset' you can download for free.
The 2 biggest negative about Aperture for me is hoops I have to jump through when combining the images I have worked on my laptop with my library of images on my Mac Pro. Plus, how it lumps all my images into one big (640GB and growing) catalogue file.
Issues I have yet to work-out with Lightroom are exporting a JPEG with a watermark of my logo. This is a breeze to do in Aperture and it can do it straight to email.
But all in all, I now think that Lightroom 2.2 will work out better for me going forward.

Have you used it before? It sounds like it's open a default - and corrupt - catalog.
You can create a new one and start from scratch by holding down control as you start it.

Can't uninstall Aperture to upgrade - please help

Been trying to figure out how to upgrade to Aperture full licence for a week.
On load of trial it asks you to selct the 'mode' - i.e.: Continue Trial, Enter licence Key or 'Buy' a licence.
When you click on the "buy" you go to AppStore - but then you cannot buy a licence as you need to install the software and the application reports an error that the 'software is already installed'
Trying to uninstall the software I discover that in Lion you must use the LaunchPad to do this: instructions below from "help"
Uninstall apps
To uninstall apps you purchased from the Mac App Store, hold down an app’s icon in Launchpad until all the icons begin to wiggle. Click an app’s delete button (x) to uninstall the app.If an icon doesn’t have a delete button, that app can’t be uninstalled.
To uninstall other apps, drag the app to the Trash (the Trash is located at the end of the Dock), and then choose Finder > Empty Trash.If you change your mind, before emptying the Trash, select the app in the Trash, and then choose File > Put Back.WARNING: When you empty the Trash, the app is permanently removed from your computer. If you have any files that you created with the app, you may not be able to open them."
However Aperture fits into the type "Cannot be uninstalled" highlighted in red above.
I am concerned that if I use a third party uninstaller I may lose application data....... Please help!!
P.S. Can you 'back up/save/ output etc the system settings for an application so as to not lose them on a reinstall??

I see from your signature you are using Mac OS 10.7.2 Lion.
Under Lion the Applications Folder is protected, and dragging from this folder simply creates Aliases on the Desktop. To delete an Application I found it easier to select the application and to use Command-delete. Then you will be prompted for your administrator password an can remove the application.

The setting, and all your Aperture presets, are stored in your user library, in the preferences folder and the Application Support folder. These will not be affected by moving the Aperture Application to the trash. Aperture will use the same settings when you relaunch it after the upgrade to the full version.

That is a well-known error. A dynamic library (PluginManager.framework) is missing from your System Library. Typically this error is caused by installing Final Cut. To solve this, you need to restore the dynamic library; the easiest way to do this is by reinstalling the system.

New To Aperture - CROP, RESIZE, PLEASE HELP!

To be clear - I am not a pro!
Ok, I just bought Aperture. I have only used Photoshop in the past. I have been watching tutorials but I simply can not understand or figure a few things out.
First of all, in Photoshop I can go to image size and see the resolution of the photo and the image dimensions in inches. Can I do this in Aperture?
Next, lets say I want to take a large photo and crop it to 5 inches by 7 inches to make a print. I know how to do this in Photoshop. I can set the crop tool to crop to 5"x7" and I know how to get a good quality 5x7 print at the best resolution.
But how in the world do I do this in Aperture?
How do I know the dimension in inches of the master photo and how do I crop to a specific size in inches? (I only see pixels) Is there a measurement for pixels that would equate to a 5"x7" photo? & How do I know I am getting the best quality for printing.
I know I must be totally misunderstanding the way Aperture handles these things. But I am totally confused! Can someone please tell me how to do this in Aperture and how it compares to Photoshop?

Thanks Tony, that helps, and I still have some questions...
I do see now in the export window that I can set up the photo to be exported at a specific DPI and a specific size in inches.
1) When I crop, how do I know I have not used too small a portion of the original image. For example, let's say I want to crop a photo to make an 8x10 inch print. In Photoshop, when I go to the "image size" window, I can easily see if I have used the 8x10 ratio cropping tool but I have actually cropped down to a 6x8 inch image. I now know that I will lose quality in printing. But how do I know this in Aperture?
2) As I said, I see how I can set up the size of the image to be exported. But how do I set up the image for printing at best quality? Again, if I go into the printing window and set up the paper size and layout options to 8x10 inches, how do I know I am not taking a smaller image and "blowing it up" to a larger size and losing quality in printing?
I hope I have been clear in my questions and thanks to anyone who can help!

Your photos remain in place, the catalog you have been using will remain. After you install Lightroom from the CC, all you have to do is open your existing catalog and continue right where you left off.

Just want to echo this complaint.
I have tried re installing Aperture 3 and I've looked for preferences or something to clear, but nothing helps. It continues to crash each time I open it no matter what.

After Aperture 3 update, I can't access old libraries. It tells me to close and relaunch but when I do this it just opens again on the same library. Please help!

I have just downloaded the latest iOS update for my computer, and then I was unable to use Aperture until I upgraded its software also. I did this, and it seemed to work fine on relaunch with new version - the last library I had open worked fine. BUT yesterday I tried to open a different library and I got a message saying
"the selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch"
I click the relaunch button and it relaunches but it just opens on the same library again. I don't know how to make it relaunch properly with the different library. Please help!! Thanks

TThe message is a bit deceptive the old libraries need to be upgraded before they can be used. To upgrade quit Aperture select one of the old libraries with the Finder and double click it. This will open Aperture on that library and ask if you want to upgrade it.
WWhile the procedure is safe it is always a good idea to have a backup of the libraries before doing this.

I assume you know where your catalogue file (the lrcat file) is located. In the same folder is a previews lrdata folder which you should delete or rename in Explorer, then start LR again.
If I've made incorrect assumptions above, sorry, and we'll go back over it from the start.

Lightroom 5 catalog issue. please help

I really need some help. When i open Lightroom 5, it gets confused and the catalog is not complete anymore. Half of them are missing.It shows the pictures on my SD card,which I always format.In other backups it's the same thing. So, I had to reimport all pictures which did month's ago and now the same AGAIN That can't be....

Are you speaking about Lightroom? By "main page", do you mean the Library Module with "All Photographs" selected?
If so, right-click on any photo and select Go To Folder in Library and it will highlight the folder containing this photo in the left-hand side Folder Panel.

I finished the 30 day trial for lightroom, and then I tried to pay for the monthly subscription, and the payment went through and I got the confirmation email, but it still only says "Trial Expired", so it's still not working!! Please help!

You are still trying to use the trial version that you downloaded. It is the standalone version, and has to be licensed differently. It will be necessary for you to uninstall that version of Lightroom, and then install Photoshop and Lightroom from the creative cloud application manager. After you install Lightroom properly, it will open just as it did before the trial expired, except that you won't get that opening trial screen anymore. All of your work will be intact. And you will be able to start right where you left off. The Lightroom program from the creative cloud application manager is precisely the same Lightroom program. The difference is in the licensing. The creative cloud realize on your Adobe ID and password whereas the standalone version relies on a serial number.
