  • OSX Mavericks problems: Applications not opening/crashing before opening. General slowness

I have a Macbook Pro 2011 model, 2.4ghz and 4GB memory running current Mavericks. Has been working completely fine up until the other day.
At first it started acting a bit sluggish, freezing on some apps and them taking a while to open. Then out of nowhere it fully froze to the point where I had to power off using the power button. Since then only core applications will open. Safari, mail, utilities etc all open fine and just run slowly, Safari in particular can take over a minute to load a page. Pretty much all of the other applications won't open. Chrome was the first to stop working, then Word, Pages and some games. I click on them on the dock and the icon bounces up and down but they just never open.
I've searched on this forum and tried some of the suggestions. I tried repairing disk permissions but it hasn't done anything, tried repairing the disk but it hasn't done anything. The hard drive is 1TB and has 400GB of free space so it's not overly full.
The first thing I did when the problem occured was to check activity monitor to see if anything was rinsing my CPU. Everything seemed normal with usage at about 15% with only one app open. After restarting I have the same problem, but now CPU is at nearly 100% usage with only Safari running. Some of the applications I can't actually open are appearing on the processes list but not appearing as open.
Problem still exists during Safe Mode, and I have no current back ups to revert to. All I can think to try is to back up currently with Time Machine and then to Reinstall the OSX or possibly do a full restore. Would the problem I'm facing not come back immediately when I restore to my back up, thus effectively making the restore pointless?
Is there anything else you can suggest to try?
Thanks in advance for any help

Encountered same problem, solved by downloading Prokit 4.5 and installing, then Aperture started right up. Good luck.

  • Aperture is current, program will not open raw from Nikon D4

    Greetings
Having issue with opening RAW files from Nikon D4.  Very odd indeed.
    thank you for your assistance.

Nikon preview is different as it is not using the OS X raw converter.
Are you running ALL these images through the Nikon software before importing them to Aperture?  That could be a problem because while the files are saved as "NEF" they have been modified by Nikon's software.
Have you tried a D4 image straight out of the camera (i.e. read it straight off the compact flash card)?  Do not use any sort of utility from Nikon to import them from the camera.

  • Mac osx 10.5 will not open download - has a 'no entry' bar over icon and message 'not supported on this architecture', also has overwritten previous version.

As above. Did not notice the 'no entry' sign and dragged icon in applications as per your instructions and it replaced the previous version. Now have no Firefox at all. Tried 3 downloads, all no good.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

  • Aperture 3.4.5 does not open raw files from Nikon P7800

Apple's list of supported cameras includes the P7800, but I get unsupported image format when I try and import nrw (raw) files. What gives?

Check your installed DCR version in the "About Aperture" panel and use Software update to see if a later version is available.
But I think you may be out of luck.
You indicate you are using OS X Lion, for which the last RAW update looks like 4.0.9 - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4757
Support for the P7800 was introduced in RAW update 5.0.1 - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5371 - which looks to be for Mountain Lion up.

  • After downloading OSX Lion iTunes will not open

I have just installed OS X Lion and tried to open iTunes. The message i get is it can't access "iTunes Library.itl" as was installed by a new version of iTunes?? So what now?

Make sure you've installed all of the available OS X Lion and iTunes updates.
If you aren't sure how to update, see this -> OS X: Updating OS X and Mac App Store apps

  • DNG will not open after Maverick osx

After installing Maverick osx, many dng do not open and I get the message:
Could not complete your request because the file format module can not parse the file.
The error occurs randomly on files that have always worked well.
I already tried to reinstall Photoshop CC and Bridge but the problem remains.
    What can I do?
I use an iMac late 2012, 16gb of ram, graphics card GTX 680MX and disk fusion.

    alb.montagna wrote:
I found a temporary solution deleting the XMP files,  after the DNG works perfectly in both Photoshop and Bridge.
If using DNG files only there should no XMP files.  With DNG they are written to the image.  Only if you edit RAW files should you have XMP files as they contain the edits.

  • 32 bit HDR from CS5 not opening in Aperture 3

    Hello All,
I shoot in RAW and utilize Aperture 3 to do basic edits and archive my photos. When utilizing HDR, I first import to Aperture and then open the raw files in CS5 as PSD files. After running them through HDR Pro and getting either a PSD or TIFF file I then try to import the product back to Aperture 3 where it will not open properly. It is displayed as either a grey thumbnail or what looks like a noisy television screen. I have no clue what is causing this. When I run the PSD files through HDR Pro as 16 bit I have no problem importing it back to Aperture 3. Aperture is currently running in 64 bit mode on my computer. Hope there is something simple I'm overlooking. Thanks in advance!
    -Adam

Jim, the point where the file becomes 32bit is not on export from LR, but once you're in the "Merge to HDR Pro" tool inside of PS.  Your LR prefs are fine.
When all the images are open and merged, and you're looking at the HDR tool inside of PS, look for the dropdown menu called "Mode" on the upper right. Pull this down and set it to 32bit.  All of your tone-mapping tools will vanish, but this is simply because a 32bit file doesn't need to be re-mapped -- it contains all the data anyway.  You'll be able to perform all the edits you need back in LR, which will treat this 32bit file somewhat like a real RAW file.
Here's the part where Victoria's advice kicks in.  You have to save the resulting file as a 32bit TIFF, or LR won't read it.  My computer automatically makes it a TIFF anyway, so it should be pretty easy from here.

  • Why I can not open aperture 3.4?

After update first mountain lion 10.8.2 and after aperture 3.4, I can not open aperture app. Can someone help?
    Thanks!!!

What exactly is happening? If Aperture is crashing, when you are trying to launch it, deinstall Aperture by removing it from the Applications folder to the Trash. Then reinstall it from your original installation media (if you bought a retail version) or by downloading from the App Store, if you bought it there.

  • CalendarAgent downloads 25 MB day! Even if Calendar not open...

Hi - I spend part of my time at a remote site that accesses the internet via a shared satellite connection. It's lousy, but it's the only way to get internet access here. It has daily bandwidth caps (100 MB) which are regulary exceeded by the group of connected computers, even if very little email or web surfing occurs.
In trying to find out which of the users is sucking up all the bandwidth, I discovered that CalendarAgent on each MacOSX machine is constantly sucking down around 25 MB per day, even if the Calendar isn't open! Every 60 seconds CalendarAgent connects to google.com on https:443 and sends and receives a large chunk of data.  I took my computer back to the city to do more measurements and found this to be true there as well.
Obviously the connection to google.com is due to using Google calendars to sync multiple Apple calendars with other remote users, both OSX and other systems. But doesn't this bandwidth usage seem like overkill? Why should CalendarAgent use so much bandwidth all day long, even if I don't open my calendar all day?
Any thoughts on a way to reduce this horrible overhead without having to change our calendar sync system (we have a lot of external users who would not be happy if they had to reconfigure a system that finally is working to everyone's satisfaction, apart from the inefficient use of satellite bandwidth...)

    Hi Christian
I feel your pain.  You need better advice than this but maybe this will help keep the thread open.  You probably have down everything on HT3085 maintenance but never hurts to do it again.  You said once only AP was open and it crashed but check you loggin Daemons at startup.  Try eliminating the ones you dont need and turn off Carbonite while trying.  And of course try another Library and see if the problem exits.  And use a new login account  (thanks Leonie).   Make sure your read/write permisions have not changed on the Drobo 5d and its in HFS+ formate.  Your images (referenceed) can be on the Drobo directly connected to your imac but not the database of the Lib, it dosent like nas or ___.  You say it happens only in AP when Repairing  an image or it also happens outside of Aperture, that is AP is not open you still crash.  Do you have another monitor attached to the imac when hangs occur.  How much Ram and what percentage of empty HD space do you have.  Stay positive, from what I hear  most poeple run smoothly, so this too can be fixed.  David

  • HT3805 My Aperture 3 just crashed, i.e., it would not open and showed an error message -1712.  I sent the current version to trash and reinstalled from my A3 disk, but after installing again it still says "Aperture can not open -1712."

My Aperture 3 just crashed...by that I mean it would not open and showed the message: "Aperture 3 cannot open.  -1712."  I have the latest A3 version and had been using it continually for 3 years.  This was the first crash.  And it will not open as often as I tried.
I am using a 13" Macbook Pro with OSX 10.8.5.
I tried sending the A3 application to trash, and reinstalling from my A3 disk.  Install message said "installation successful."  But A3 would still not open and gave same message with -1712.
Any suggestions what I should do or try?
    Thanks

Perhaps your Aperture library was damaged, when Aperture crashed. What where you doing, right before the crash happened?
    - If you installed new software - programs, plug-ins, preferences panels, check, if they are compatible.
    - If you imported new images, you may have imported corrupted files, that crash Aperture.
Can Aperture launch correctly, when you try to open a new Aperture library?
Hold down the options-key, when you launch Aperture and select to create a new library. Import a few images. Does that work?
If Aperture will launch on a new Library, try to repair your current library. Hold down the key-combination option-command ⌥⌘  firmly while double-clicking the Aperture library to open in First Aid Mode. Hold the keys down, until the panel appears, and then try  the First Aid Options in turn.
I have the latest A3 version
Is it Aperture 3.4.5? The latest Aperture 3.5.1 will not work with Mt. Lion.

  • I Installed Aperture update today and Aperture will not open.

I am running OSX 10.8.2 and installed a new Aperture update today. Now when I try to open it says my libraray has to be modified.. I modified my current libraray and now when I attempt to open Aperture it crashes and lets me send a report to Apple but will not open up... I also updated iPhoto at the same time and it to says I must modify my library to run this update...I don't care about iPhoto at the moment... I am a serious photographer and want to get to my photos in Aperture and am unable to open it... Any one out there that can help me..?

There are so many threads here which contain the solution.  Have a read :-)

  • Aperture not opening videos

Hi, I am having a problem with Aperture.
Whenever I try to open a video (MOV files shot with the iphone) I just get a blank screen, the video does not open. If I drag it outside on the desktop I just get a very small file (like this small http://goo.gl/1yJwS ) that obviously does not work.
This happens with every video on Aperture, and I tried the following procedures:
    - I repaired permissions on the Aperture database, repaired the library and rebuilt the library
    - I repaired permissions and disk on DISK UTILITY
    - I uninstalled Aperture with CLEAN MY MAC, a program that is supposed to completely uninstall apps and then I re downloaded it from the Mac App Store
    - I opened the library with iPhoto ===> in this case I am able to view the videos, EVERYTHING WORKS OK
    - I opened the library with another Mac (same OSX version and Aperture version) ==> in this case I am able to view the videos, EVERYTHING WORKS OK
    - I opened the library with another user on my Mac ==> I get the same error
    - I opened another library with my Mac ==> I get the same error
It would seem that the problem resides somewhere inside my Mac, not in Aperture since I reinstalled it, and not in the library since it works fine on other Macs.
I don't recall installing any strange video editing software recently, since I have looked around in some forums and some users suggest uninstalling divx codecs.
I also tried using VLC media player as the external video editor, but when I try to open the video with that it gives me this error "Editing Error - This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format."
All my files are located in the aperture library, they are not referenced files. Also I am able to see the thumbnails of my videos and when I click on the INFO panel I am able to see al the file properties, including the video size which is obviously not in the order of Kilobytes like the video it exported but several hundred megabytes.
Sorry for the long post but I figured I would already let you guys know all my troubleshooting steps so as to exclude repeating the same procedures.
    Thanks ;-)

As a result it will not open my master, it is locked. when I try to open that Library  it says There was an error opening the database for the library. I have tried every thing. I updated the other libr but now it will not open the main to update. What do I do?

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down.  You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.
