In addition to Frank Caggiano's questions- what was the last MacOS X version that you have been running, before your drive broke, and what version are you running now? Did you upgrade everything to the same versions, after you reinstalled the system on the new drive?

  • Why does aperture (OSX 10.7.5) delete image from album deletes master in project sometimes.

When on occasion does Aperture delete the masters and all versions when you delete from an album. This absolutely should not happen. If you create an albbum of selected images and when you have finished delete the album as not needed it deletes certain masters connected to that album as well. At the moment you can make an album fronm selected images but never dare delete it as you have no idea what you will lose!
    Getting fed up with aperture!!

Well, if we can catch you in a welcoming mood, let us see if we can't pro-actively correct some other user errors  , just in case.
A simple place to begin is my concise guide to the parts of Aperture.
Here are some other resources of note.
Aperture is a fantastic program.  It is, however, almost certainly not, at heart, like any other program you've ever used.  Understanding the differences will certainly keep you from getting fed up with the program.

  • Quick preview acting up

    Hi,
I spent the last few days reorganizing my Aperture library and migrating from managed to referenced files.
The problem I'm having is that Quick Preview doesn't work with the embedded JPEGs. It does work with the previews created by Aperture but they always stay somewhat fuzzy thanks to the scaling algorithm in Aperture/OSX.
Aperture does use the embedded JPEGs on newly imported images.
My question is: is there any way to get Aperture to read those embedded JPEGs again ?
The fuzzyness (even though it's subtle) is killing me since I mainly use quick preview to quickly assess image sharpness and delete the unsharp images quicly after import.
    What I've tried:
    - Delete the stored previews (this results in 1024x768 images in preview that get scaled up to full screen and are small when I press Z in full screen mode)
    - Rebuilt previews (1/2 size, quality 7): this results in somewhat workable images but still with some fuzzyness and absolutely not as sharp as the embedded JPEGs.
    - I've consolidated the masters to see if it's caused by the Referenced masters system (it isn't). I've moved them out of the library again afterwards.
    - I've rebuilt the library and did a consistency check.
It affects all my projects that were in the library prior to the reorganisation. And once again: newly imported images work properly, so quick preview isn't "broken" completely.
Any ideas on what I could try ?

The other option (which I'm considering) is to use referenced libraries and import the Raw+Jpg into Aperture. Then do a "new master from Jpeg on the raw files displayed. The jpg's are now displayed as a version. With referenced libraries, you can delete the versions without losing the raw file. If you can use the jpg, great. If you want to edit the raw, simply do a "show in finder" from under the file menu and drop the nef into NX and do your "in-camera" edits such as Picture controls ect.... Then export the file as jpg or tiff and drop back into your aperture project. I'm leaning this way to avoid using another application and Aperture is clearly more capable than View. One of the advantages of View, however, is there is an "open in NX" function. You cannot use Apertures' "edit with" command to open the raw file. It will only render a tiff or jpg to an outside app. It would be nice to be able to open the native raw file in NX using this function. Not a big deal with the "show in finder" option and referenced libraries.

  • Icc profiles on the mac questions

There seem to be multiple locations in OSX for icc profiles. I've found them in system/library/coloursync, library/coloursync and user/library/coloursync. Both display and printer profiles seem to be mixed up in these 3 locations.
Is there a preferred location for different profiles - or does Aperture/OSX find things as required (ie, it 'just works') ?
Also - my lab sent me its .icc profiles which I've copied into my system/library/colorsync/profiles directory. Aperture seems to find them okay. Are .icc files universal (ie, mac and PC) ? I didn't specify that I was a Mac user when I requested the icc profiles.
    Paul

There seem to be multiple locations in OSX for icc
    profiles. I've found them in
    system/library/coloursync, library/coloursync and
    user/library/coloursync. Both display and printer
profiles seem to be mixed up in these 3 locations.
Is there a preferred location for different profiles
    - or does Aperture/OSX find things as required (ie,
    it 'just works') ?
    [snip]
I cant' speak as to whether display and print profiles should go in different places, or Mac vs. PC profiles, but the general rules for which Library folder to use are:
/System/Library: Don't mess with it. If an installer puts stuff there, that's fine, but the /System folder and all its contents should be considered hands-off at the user level unless you know what you're doing (the greatest ability to screw up the system comes from mucking around in the /System folder).
/Library: Files (in this case ICC profiles) put in this folder's subfolders will be available to all users of the computer.
/Users/Username/Library: Files put in this folder's subfolders will be available only to the user specified. Other users will not have access to them.
So basically, if you have multiple users on your Mac and you want them all to have access to the ICC profiles, put them in /Library/ColourSync/Profiles. If you only want yourself to be able to use them, they go in /Users/your username/Library/ColourSync/Profiles.
If you only have one user, and will never add any users to the computer, then placing things in /Library or /Users/username/Library will always yield the same results - you'll always have access to them.
You probably haven't broken anything by putting the other ones in the /System/Library/ColourSync/Profiles folder, but you may want to take them out and put them in the appropriate place, for consistency.
Also remember that the user's Library folder is checked by applications first, then the /Library, and lastly the /System/Library. That's the magic of how it "just works" no matter which Library you put the files in.

  • Canon 10D RAW - Unsupported Image Format??

I have a folder of 66 Canon 10D RAW (.CRW and .THM) images. After importing to Aperture 1.5 I get 'Unsupported Image Format' for 29 of the images. If I try and open one of these images from the Finder in preview I also get a 'Cannot open' message.
Strange thing is iView Media Pro, RAW Developer, Canon DPP, Phase One C1, Photoshop CS2 and LightZone can all open and view these files! Only Aperture/OSX (Preview) is having the problem.
Any ideas how to 'recover' these images to Aperture?

You are indeed correct .... shame on me for not reading your post carefully.
Since you have .THM files, are you pulling the images into Canon's ImageBrowser or DP Professional before Aperture vs. importing direct to Aperture? The reason I ask is that iPhoto, Preview and Aperture all failing to read the same image is clearly systemic not application specific. It points to some level of corruption - - - as far as OS X is concerned - - - of the image and is obviously not application centric, save where the application calls on the OS support systems.
Is it possible for you to generate .DNG's for the "Unsupported" images and try importing these? It may be the CRW wrapper that is somehow unreadable at a myopically detailed level that other imaging tools blythly (and perhapds more appropriately) ignore. The DNG wrapper may allow the RAW content to be then read by Aperture.
Hopefully this is a more helpful response.

also mobjab are having a few issues with some handsets (including the n95) and yahoo at the moment and they are working on a fix. if you find you can send messages but cannot receive them on yahoo then hopefully soon it will be fixed. msn is unaffected

  • Printing to Canon iPF series

Historically I've always printed from Photoshop via the 16-bit Canon plugin. This works great. I just thought I'd give native Ap3 printing a try for once. After I go through the (awkward, buggy) layout feature in Aperture, it appears to hand off to the OS X print dialog.
There, it appears to have correctly picked up my color profile setting (custom) and my paper type and size (letter cut-sheet). After setting some additional options (media type, resolution), when I hit Print, the Canon monitor application starts and the combination Aperture+OSX Print Dialog locks up. It just sits there with no options in the dropdown. The printer actually lights up as if it's ready to print, but nothing goes over the wire.
I can print okay from other applications using the built-in print driver, so I think it is something with Aperture.
Is anyone else having this problem?

    Hello Jeff,
The problem you are having with the Canon PS and UFR2 driver is caused by the Paper Size > US Letter not being listed as a supported paper size. Instead, these two drivers have Letter, not US Letter. Therefore, when you do have the Page Setup > Format set to Any Printer and the Paper Size set to US Letter, the finishing options are not available.
You will notice an interesting phenomena via the Page Setup pane. Open an application like TextEdit, go to Page Setup and have the Format set to Any Printer and the Paper Size set to US Letter. Then change the Format menu to the Canon driver and watch the Paper Size automatically change to Letter.
The solution to this is to delete the CanonPS and UFR2 driver and use the new Canon 'CUPS' PS v2.11 driver. This driver has US Letter as a supported paper size, so you can leave 'Format for' at 'Any Printer'. And the driver supports both the 5075 and C5185, so you models are covered. Note that you will still have to use the Fiery driver for the other C5185.
Re the mailbox, the format setting won't affect this function. Your comment about PCL not supporting it is interesting. The PCL driver on Windoze definitely works with mailbox so you must have some other gremlins if that is not available.

I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro with MAC OSX 10.6.8, iPhoto ’09 version 8.1.2 and have downloaded two software programs: one is Aperture 3.2 and the other is Photoshop Elements 9 (which I got from a friend who didn’t need it).
I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.
    “Welcome to Aperture 3.2
Your library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of Aperture. Once upgraded, you will not be able to use this library with previous versions of Aperture.
Upgrading a library from previous versions of Aperture 3 generally takes a few minutes or less, though larger libraries will take longer. After that, Aperture 3.2 will upgrade your library's thumbnails, but you can use the application during that time.
Tip: To open a different library, quit Aperture and hold the Option key down while starting Aperture
    Current Library Location:
    Jadzia (home)   -----Pictures------Aperture Library
                                                      QUIT             UPGRADE”
I have heard horror stories  about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma.  I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?

Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop.  Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file.  For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Is it possible to share an aperture library with different users using osx server.

is it possible to share an aperture library with different users using osx server.

Not really.  You should not be sharing an Aperture library over a network.  It's not designed for that and you'll likely corrupt your library at some point.

I have an IMAC and I'm running OSX 10.9.2.  I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.  In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.  Is this possible? Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • Aperture no longer works with new osx Yosemite update

I installed new OSX Yosemite update and now it says that my Aperture App. will not work with this version. What can be done other than updating Aperture?

    Hi,
    It's a five step process
Call Apple Support for Software > Aperture
Answer questions at recorded message (have Aperture serial number ready – it is on a sticker on the back of the 'Installing Your Software' booklet) and you will be transferred to a real person.
Inform them of the issue and they will tell you that this is a known issue with certain users and they will request a 'Redemption Code' for the App Store for a standalone download of Aperture. The issue will be rectified in the next Yosemite release.
Wait for email from Support (they have to contact Support in California for redemption code, so depending on your time zone, there may be some delay).
Visit App Store, enter redemption code, and you are good to go.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have aperture 3 on Disc how do i install on MBP (OSx Mavericks)

Hi all, I have downloaded a trial version and started by putting in my Serial number frm origional disc.....all this worked fine, however now it wont open because apeture 3 is not compatable with OSx mav, the app is not on the desktop and is greyed out in the application list.
    please advise
    Regards Philip

    Philip,
if you are running Mavericks you first have to update Aperture to version 3.5.
You should see the update at the AppStore in the Updates pane.
If it is not showing, try to update first by running Software update from the -menu in the upper left corner of your main menu bar.  If no updates are shown, download the last update from the support page:
    Aperture 3.4.5
and install that. Then try update again at the App Store.
For the update to show at the AppStore, you must be signed in with your AppleID and Aperture must be installed in the Applications folder and simply called "Aperture", not "Aperture Trial" or something.

  • Can I purchase Aperture to run on OSX 10.7.3?

I'm seeing several discussions that mention Aperture as a possible solution to many of my iPhoto problems but when looking at it in the "store" the system requirements are minimum OSX 10.9.  Yet, I see reference to many using it with LION.
QUESTION: Can I use Aperture without upgrading from LION?  If so, how/where do I buy a version that will run?

The currently sold version at the App Store requires Mavericks, correct. This version will support iCloud fully.
If you want a version, that is compatible with Lion, you could buy the boxed retail version of Aperture at Amazon.
This will install a very early Aperture 3 version.
Download an upgrade to Aperture 3.3.2 from the Support page:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1561
