Aperture & Photo retouching

This may not be the best place to place this question, but I can't find a way to e-mail it to Apple.
Apple's new Aperture program, while pricey, looks like a great one to use with iPhoto. But on occasion I need to remove or change an undesireable object in a photo, e.g., a telephone pole or light pole from an archectural shot, filling in the space by cloning another area of the photo. I don't see in the Aperture specs whether this can be done; red-eye, etc., yes, but nothing to the extent I am thinking of.
Can anyone help?

I use a Nikon D70 and also have a Nikon D100, with some pretty good lenses for each. I've used Nikon SLR cameras since the original F.
With the D70 I like to shoot in NEF (raw) + JPEG (small) when I can. For some time now I have been looking for a good product to allow editing and printing in NEF, but have not been sold yet on Nikon's or Photoshop's version. I have both Photoshop Elements 2.0 and Photoshop 7.0, neither of which can handle NEF files from their basic programs.
It was my understanding for reading Apple's web information about Aperture that it worked hand-in-hand with iPhoto, that at the least, you can retreive photos from iPhoto's library for manipulation, arranging or whatever, and that originals would essentially remain in iPhoto. Where they stay isn't really important--that was just how it looked to me.
Aperture looks like a great program, but I wanted to satisfy myself it could also do the editing I would like to do with a NEF file, without first changing that file to a format Photoshop 7 can handled (which I guess would be JPEG, TIFF, etc.).
Anyway, Apple doesn't provide that information in the material I looked at.

Is there a way to automatically backup the photo library that will be on the second hard drive to the Time Machine hard drive?

  • Raw files in aperture photo books

    Hi,
I'm creating my first aperture photo book. I uploaded raw files to aperture, made adjustments, and then placed the versions into the book. It is these versions (with all crops, adjustments, etc.) that will show up in my photo book, correct? (That's what it looks like when I preview the book, but I just want to make sure I didn't need to convert them to jpeg or anything before I spend over $100 on this book!)
    Thanks!

When you create a version in Aperture it automatically creates a jpeg, so you don't have to do anything else. It is all automatic.

Have a look at your import setting specifically Store Files:
Make sure it is set to where you want the originals to go.

  • Aperture photos not showing up in other apps

I just noticed that all my aperture photos arent showing up in other applications that provide an aperture hook. EXCEPT for the latest images that I have imported.
All my images are the and I can see the folders fine in other apps, but they show empty. I did have to do an archive and install lately so am sure that I had some files that didnt make it over..
How can I recreate my library in order to fix this?
am not missing anything in aperture, just the integration with other apps, I tried exporting and then importing my library but lost all the organization that i had done. so reverted
    thanks.

I had updated the previews with no luck, I just restored my library from the vault and it is rebuilding everything now.
that worked! maybe update previews was different than a rebuild of previews, but i didnt see that option.
    thanks

  • Can't see all Aperture photos

In iMovie '08 (7.1.4), I'm trying to use photos from Aperture (2.1.2). I can see and use all of my Aperture photos in the iMovie Photo Viewer except my most recent Aperture project. I have over 1000 photos in that project and can see them in Aperture but only 10 are showing in that project looking at it from iMovie. It seems to be a random 10 photos. None are rated, have any other odd keywords, or are any different format that my other Aperture Projects that are showing from iMovie.
I have re-started and re-booted all applications and my computer several times.
    Any ideas?

Never mind- I figured out the problem.
I "Updated Previews" in Aperture and now I can see them all in iMovie.

  • ITunes stopped syncing Aperture photos to my ATV and iPad

Out of the blue my iTunes has completely stopped syncing my Aperture photo library to both iPad and ATV devices. In iTunes the drop-down selection for iPhoto and Aperture is there but when I click sync nothing happens. My video, audio and apps all sync just fine. Any ideas?

That show that your original library is damaged and needs to be repaired.  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I want to learn professional photo retouching - help?

I am currently a graphic designer but I am extremely interested in photo retouching. How/what/where do I need to do/learn/go to make this happen? I've seem some software that claims to do this, but it all looks a little shady to me. All help will be deeply appreciated...and if there is another forum that I can post to also, I'm all ears!
    Thank you!!!

Well, if you want to do this professionally, you should probably learn Photoshop rather than Elements, since that's what any shop you would be working for would use. Most community colleges and so on offer courses in PS, as do many art institutes, etc. There are also many online courses which are quite good. The programs on DVD will certainly teach you the basics, but the good ones aren't cheap.
If you are hoping to do this as part of your business, remember that it always helps to have a credential.

  • Error (-50) synching Aperture photos to iPhone

    Hi,
iTunes seems chronically unable to synch some of my Aperture photos to my iPhone. This is not universal, but it happens consistently if I include certain albums in the list to be synched.
Basically, the synch proceeds as normal, with the iTunes status saying "synching photo X of Y" with X counting up, but after a while, it stops, generates a popup and none of the photos appear to have synched. The popup error says "The iPhone MikesIPhone cannot be synched. An unknown error has occurred (-50)." A message is also written to a console that says:
    6/28/11 11:26:27.403 AM com.apple.usbmuxd: MuxSendToClient send failed for 0xf-3315a3c0884bb37651fb55ab4a70721a40ac329d@0xfa250000:65438->0x1003296f0-iTun es/com.apple.iTunes:5644: 32 - Broken pipe
Any ideas how to fix this? I've tried "Generating Previews" in Aperture for all of the photos in the offending album, but this does not help. (Note that the photos sync fine with an old-style Apple TV.) I feel like the iPhone-downscaled cache of the image must be corrupted somehow, but I don't know how to force it to be rebuilt without deleting/reimporting the photos (and thereby losing all of my edits and metadata, etc.)
    Thanks,
    Mike

I'm having the same issue. It appears to be a problem in Aperture because the iPhone will sync normally if I select iPhoto in the Sync Photos from menu in iTunes (or if I stop syncing photos altogether).
I read on another thread about deleting the iPod Photo cache, so I did that, but it didn't have any effect on this problem.
This issue only recently started on my machine, and I can't recall doing or changing anything that might have induced the problem.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • How to share Aperture photos

Just got 3rd generation Apple TV - does anyone know how to get Aperture photos to show up?  I've set up home sharing

In the iTunes application go to file > homesharing and choose the photos you wish to share, click apply/sync and you should then be able to select the photos on the Apple TV.

  • Cannot share aperture photos

I can no longer share aperture photos with apple TV using home sharing in iTunes. This happened just recently, probably since 05/01; however, only notice a few days ago that this is happening. I have aperture since Jan/11 and shared photos normally. I can select aperture from drop-down menu in iTunes, but the total photos shared shows 0 (I have at least 9000 photos in aperture database). Please help!

I also had the same problem, but was able to resolve the problem by creating a brand new Aperature library, and then importing my old library into it.  I made sure that the Aperature preferences were set to share everything, and when I went back into Apple TV it could see all my photos.
This could be a real pain if you don't have enough disk space, to copy your entire library, but I didn't have this problem.

  • Aperture photos don't show on iTunes synch

Synching with iPhoto works fine, butI can't see any photos when attempting to synch to Aperture. As noted in another post, Projects don't show up. It does see smart albums, but with a zero photo count for all. Any thoughts on why? Do Aperture photos have to be managed in the library vs referenced in order to be seen and synched? [All of my photos are references to outside image files.] Does it matter that the Aperture library is maintained in a non-standard location?

in the photos tab of the A-TV setup, there's a label near the top that says, "Sync photos from:" and a pull-down menu next to it. from here you can choose either iPhoto or Aperture. you have to have Aperture selected in order to sync them and see your albums.
also, make sure that you've got at least Aperture 1.5, but preferably 1.5.2 and that you've got previews turned on and being generated for new albums. finally, there's also a setting in the preferences to share the previews with other iLife apps. i think iTunes needs that to be able to see/sync photos.

  • Aperture photo book vs iPhoto quality

Hi, will photo books printed from Aperture give me better quality than photo books from iPhoto 6? This will help me decide if I should buy Aperture or not.
Is it true that Aperture prints books at 300 dpi and iPHoto at 150 dpi?
Any advantages to printing photo books in Aperture (what does Aperture photo books do that iPhoto doesn't)?
    Thanks,

Recently I uploaded and had printed a hardbound book that had been designed within Aperture. Prior to this, I have used iPhoto to produce 10 such books starting back in 2002. I have always chosen the picture book format because it provided the largest images.
This time I used Aperture because it allows large images with small captions and a good deal or freedom of length and placement.I particularly appreciated the good snap placement between the pictures and other captions. The ease of producing 2 page spreads was impressive. The book ran 84 pages and the quality of the resulting was very good–on a par with my other Apple photo books.
On only one occasion have I had a problem with quality control of these books. In that case an a good high resolution image was pixelated. In that case, I was able to call Apple and speak to someone, who after hearing my description, asked me to send my copy back and issued a reprint order.
My only bit of consternation with this order is that I found no such contact information enclosed with the book.
Finally, I haven't seen any specific suggestions within this formum for third-party print houses that can produce good quality books. Just assertions that alternatives do exist. I would be willing to strip down the .pdf file of the book I have just created to some of the trickier images and see how these one of these print houses fare.

  • Aperture 3.6 and Aperture Photo Library

When Aperture 3.5.1 is upgraded to Aperture 3.6, will Aperture 3.6 cause the Aperture Photo Library to undergo an upgrade?  If so, is that upgraded library compatible with the Mavericks version of Aperture?
I'm curious, since I will have a Mac running Mavericks and Aperture 3.5.1 (accessing the Aperture 3.6 library)...
    Thanks
