Aperture previews on internal HD while RAW on external HD - possible?

Hi. I need a solution that will allow me to store my RAW and old JPG original image library on external drives and keep high quality JPGs in the Aperture library on the internal drive. For me this would act as a secondary backup to burning RAW files to DVD for archival and disaster recovery, and also allow faster access to certain functions of Aperture that don't require messing with RAW masters, not to mention freeing up a lot of space that is very much needed. Especially now with 24 and 36 MP RAW files from my D7100 and D800, RAW files are often in the 60-70 MB range while an HQ JPG of the same image might be about 10x less. Is this possible with Aperture? Is anyone doing something similar to deal with similar issues with a different solution that doesn't include Aperture (I've been using Aperture since the beginning so I don't have a lot of experience with different solutions, but I'm willing to switch), such as Lightroom or Capture NX2? Obviously cost and hardware are limitations here. Ideally, I would have a RAID setup and offsite auto-backup, but this would require TBs of storage on top of the TBs I already have, which usually costs upwards of $100 per month (i.e. bitcasa). Not an option for me right now. Thanks for any suggestions!
P.S. Just to be clear, I'm aware of the relatively high quality thumbnails (up to 1024 pixels) Aperture generates, which are available in the program even if the managed library is unavailable (unplugged). This isn't good enough for my purpose. I'm talking about large JPGs, at least 2 to 3 times larger than a 1024 thumbnail that could potentially be of use in a professional context in the event the orignals were lost or unavailable.

Aperture is structured to provide exactly what you want.  You have a few details mis-understood, however.
Read my short guide to the parts of Aperture.
Your Library holds Images (each Image is a record in a database).  You control whether the Image's Original (the file you imported) is stored inside the Library package or outside.  Images that are stored outside the Library package can be on-line or off-line (Images stored inside the Library package are on-line any time the Library is open in Aperture.)  Aperture lets you do much with Images whose Originals are off-line, all of which involves metadata:  you can rate them, put them into different containers in Aperture, assign keywords, etc.  What you cannot do when an Image's Original is off-line is:  print the Image, change Adjustments, or export the Image.
Aperture is designed to deal with the problem of Libraries taking up too much space an a single drive by relocating older or rarely-used Images' Originals to a second (almost always external) drive.
Cleverly, though, Aperture also includes another file based on your Image that can be useful.  This is the Preview.  It is a JPG file.  It is stored in your Library package, and thus is always on-line when your Library is open.  You create a copy of your Preview file by dragging an Image from Aperture.  Those copies can be emailed, used in other programs, etc.  (Added:  In fact, it is this Preview file that Aperture makes available to other programs via OS X's Media Browser.)
You control:
- whether Previews are created
- whether Previews are deleted
- the size and quality settings of the Preview file.
You can control these things for each Image in your Library, but in practice this is usually set for the entire Library and not changed for any subset of Images.
Put your Library on your system drive.  Relocate [some, many, almost all] Originals to a dedicated external drive.  (Note that this is not a one-way trip: Aperture makes it easy to relocate or consolidate any Originals at any time.  And don't worry about the Finder folder structure: it seems important to you, but to the computer it makes no difference at all.)  Set your Previews to the highest resolution and quality that you might need.  (I set mine to equal the resolution of my largest display, with "Quality" set to 10.)
You now have pretty much what you asked for:  a trimmed-down Library, RAW Originals off of your system drive, and the ability to create fairly large, high-quality JPGs of your Images at any time.
The next step -- should your Library outgrow this set-up -- is to put your Library on a fast external drive.  External drive throughput is excellent today.  Start-up time for a Library on an external drive is slower, but once loaded a Library on an external drive should appear to the user no different than a Library on an internal drive.
The above makes up your _working copy_ of your Aperture system ("system" = Library + Images' Referenced Originals).  For backup, make two copies of your _working copy_.  Store one off site.  Never have all three in the same physical location.
The Preview is, as you've noticed, a good "extra" back-up of your work.  Just be aware that it is a JPG, and is likely lower resolution than a new file created by exporting an Image.
Lastly, you might re-consider using optical media for archival purposes.  I looked into this three or four years ago and concluded that keeping two copies of my digital archive on hard drives was less expensive, easier to maintain, more reliable, and gave me far more latitude for storage and retrieval.
HTH,
--Kirby.

  • How can I do backups on internal disc while sharing an external USB drive?

    Hi,
On my Airport Utility there are two lines: "Time Capsule Disc", and below (indented) "Data".
(When I plug an external USB drive I can see it in this window as well)
Clicking (selecting) the first line, on the right hand side I can see the disc details (name, capacity and SMART Status (Verified)), and two buttons: Compress and Erase (I don't know if these are the words used on the english version mine is spanish).
Clicking on the second line (Data) I can see the Name "Data", capacity, used and available sizes and number of users connected.
    First question:
Why Time Machine can't see the "Data" volume if I untick the "Share files" checkbox?
    Second question:
Moreover, I've got a USB External Drive attached to my Time Capsule, so I have to have the "Share Files" checkbox ON, this makes my USB disc (fat32) available to my Windows computers but ALSO the "Data" volume can be seen from Windows. If there is any attempt to assign a Windows drive letter to the "Data" volume, next time Time machine wants to do a backup I'm getting a "disc wrong or missing, check credentials (or something similar)".
In summary, what I'm trying to do is Time Machine backups to the internal Time Capsule disc (making that disc unavailable/invisible to any other computer in my network) while sharing a USB external drive attached to Time Capsule.
    Advice, please!

Yes you can go to > Music > iTunes folder and copy the whole iTunes folder and drag the folder to your external and then on the new Mac click and highlight the iTunes folder and then in iTunes click on the button at the top (add folder to library) and you should see all your songs transfer from the external to the Mac and all songs start filling up in your iTunes library on the Mac.
This is the easiest method all songs and other media such as songs, movies, apps will be transferred over however you may not be able to keep ratings & last played counts using this method.
To keep all metadata including ratings & play count use the Apple method exclusively for this if you have to have your metadata, play counts and ratings saved.
I used scenario one above because it one of the simplest methods and I was just satisfied enough just to transfer all media over.

  • Beep the internal speakers, while there are external plugged?

How can I use the "beep" command and have the laptop beep even if there are speakers connected through the audio port, but switched off? Want to be able to set the beep to inform me of certain events, even when the external speakers are off (I keep them always plugged in though).
    Any ideas?

that is my problem, when there are external speakers plugged in, it just produces the beep sound through the speakers.

  • Remove Internal HD and mount as external? Possible?

Hey folks- thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I am retiring a G4 that is no longer starting up and has a busted optical drive. I'll be working primarily on my new MacBook.
I would like to remove the internal hard drive from the G4 and mount it in an external case so I can access the files. Is this possible? If so, any guidance or suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Chris

Get an external housing. Firewire would be best, however, since you have USB 2.0, USB would also work (but a bit slower).

Either use 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to develope the RAW files and to save them in another lossless format like TIFF, or try if Adobe's free DNG Coverter can convert your Lumix RAW files to dng. Then import the dngs. This way, your files will still be RAW files.  This works (most times) for my Lumix FZ28.

  • Possible for iPhoto to remove referenced Aperture previews that I deleted?

Maybe I've already gone down the wrong path here, but I've been using Aperture until iPhoto 09. I really want to face and geo tag my photos, so I'm sharing my Aperture previews with iPhoto.
Last night, I decided to clean out a lot of my junk shots because I shoot RAW and am running out of space. I figured iPhoto would be smart enough to auto-remove those files from the library, but... of course it did not.
Now, I have hundreds of photos scattered across multiple events that are gone. iPhoto thinks they're still there, still showing the small icon for each image. When it tries to reference the bigger version, I get the popup saying that it can't locate the original.
Any suggestions on how to clean up this mess? I know I could just delete the iPhoto library and start over, but I've already spent HOURS face tagging, and would hate to lose all of that information.
    Thanks!

I find this to be a huge flaw in iphoto. I deleted a large group of original duplicate thumbnails of some pics that I had that iphoto had imported. Now iphoto faces in littered with thumbnails of missing pics. It will take hours to manually look for and then delete these entries. If you delete the original pictures on your drive, iphoto should be able to re-index and remove the missing files. It can do this if forced by holding down command option when starting and choosing to rebuild, BUT this does NOT rebuild the 'faces' lists. I had spend allot of time manually selecting a long list of multiple faces lists. Not only that, but when you manually delete these empty faces pictures you have to open each one to see if it then shows "not found" and then close it and then delete the icon to get rid of it. In the main list of pics you can at least hit the delete key on the full size pics as you scroll them. It is very tedious. Now you might say, well just delete the iphoto pics first instead of the originals, but that doesn't work, because there is no sub directory within the "faces" lists to remove in batch. It;'s just a mess to manage and do maintenance on. In short the "faces" lists do NOT have much control or sync once you set them up and tag them manually which severely limits their usefulness.

  • Aperture 3.4.4, Digital camera raw 4.0.5 cannot be installed

On my late 2007 Imac I run OSX 10.8.3 and Aperture 3.4.4. While installing Digital Camera Raw 4.05 I get the message Aperture version 3.4 or later, or iPhoto version 9.4 or later, is required to install this update after which the installation aborts.
I still had iPhoto 7.1.5 on my machine which I haven't used since 2008 which I decided to delete, but that did not help.
IMO the install programm should just work as it says you need either the correct Aperture OR iPhoto version, not both .
But anyway, what can I do to enable the update to work without doing a clean install of ML or buying a product I never use? Is there still some kind of iPhoto residu?
BTW, the last version of DCR I tried to install was 4.0.2. This had the same issue, but I let go of that one. I don't know what my current version is.
    Kind regards,
    Martin

I have all my Photo applications including Aperture in a separate map
The subfolder explains it. That is a problem in Lion and Mt. Lion. These operating systems rely on the applications being installed directly in the Applications folder.
However, you could  group your applications by creating folders in the Launchpad. Simply dragging the applications in the Lauchpad on top of each other will create subfolders there and you can see them all grouped there and launch them after double clicking the folder. That is Lion's and Mt. Lion's way to launch applications from folders.
These screenshots show my folders for Photography apps and Music applications. Double clicking reveals the folder contents for launching.

  • Leaving Aperture 2.1.4 intact while upgrading to Aperture 3

I am curious to know whether I can have a working copy of Aperture 2.1.4 after I have iupgraded Aperture 3. This would allow me to use Aperture 2 on older libraries or on archived libraries that I would rather not have to upgrade to Aperture 3, at least for a while.
If it is possible, can you describe how to do it.
What are the downsides or negatives with this approach?
    Thanks
    Steven

It's really easy to run a dual system with referenced masters, since you don't need to re-copy the Raw files into the new library.
Either way though, just rename aperture to "aperture 2" in your applications folder, install aperture 3 and create your new library. Use file->import library to import old libraries...
The only trick is that you have to hold down option while launching aperture 2 after launching aperture 3 to Tell it which library to use. Aperture 2 will try to use the "most recent" library which is the aperture 3 one.
The only downside is that aperture 2 might use or overwrite the preferences file of aperture 3 and vice versa, this has caused issues for me on my mac pro machine in aperture 3, had to trash the file and recreate it with aperture 3.

  • Aperture previews blacked out

Ever since I had to have my hard drive replaced and restored from my Time capsule Backup I have numerous Aperture previews that either appear in black, red hazy lines or incorrect preview pic.  I have run the repair functions and tried to right click and either update or generate preview but nothing seems to work.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I have run the repair functions and tried to right click and either update or generate preview but nothing seems to work.  Anyone have any suggestions?
Are your originals raw files and have you tried to reprocess the originals? From the main menu: Photos > Reprocess original? And tried to recreate the Thumbnails, not the previews?
Do the originals show the same corruption? Have you tried to export the originals and looked at them in the Finder?
Is your library referenced or managed, and if referenced, are the originals on the same drive as the library?

I had configured some message mapping object and averything was ok. I could activate that and do the test of mapping. When I try to change dependecies in that object I see this error. Now I can not even activate that object and test it. Now when I try to create and configure new message mapping I have got the same problem.
What I have to do in that situation?
    Can somebody help me?

I have an iPhoto library with only Jpeg's in it. I just installed Aperture 3.5 and imported several RAW photos in Aperture. Shouldn't I now have an Aperture library?

Should I create an Aperture library and import all of my photos from iPhoto to the new Aperture library? Then delete my iPhoto library entirely?  Just trying to get my library structure correct from the get-go as I plan to shoot only in RAW.
That is not an easy question. There are still a few glitches with the unified library approach. For example, the new iWork applications will not yet show the Aperture library in the Media Browser, only the current iPhoto library. If you are using iWork with your photolibrary, keep it an iPhoto library.
And it is unclear, what will happen, when Aperture or iPhoto will be upgraded to newer versions. Right now you need the latest iPhoto version to be able to upgrade older iPhoto libraries, if you want to open them in Aperture. So probably you will need to upgrade iPhoto as well, if you keep your library an iPhoto library, when both Aperture and iPhoto will be upgraded to Aperture 4 and iPhoto 12.0 or similar. In the long run it will be safer to convert the library to an Aperture library, if you do not want to keep updating iPhoto, but that can wait.
If you want to convert the iPhoto library to an Aperture library, back up your iPhoto library.
Then create a new Aperture library (with File > Switch to Library > Other/New ) and then import your iPhoto library into Aperture using the command "File > Import > Library" and select your iPhoto library.
