Aperture problems

I am using Aperture 3 to manage and manipulate my photos but I am still struggling with understanding where my photos are stored.
I want to attach them to emails but when I do it has “review” written across the top. I also need to resize them.
I can’t rename a number of my photos at one go, I have to do it individually and that is driving me nuts.
Last but not least, I purchased an Aperture book with a test library disc in it and now want to delete it. Only problem is the main library is now called Aperture 3 trial library. How do I delete safely?
I’ll probably be back with more questions depending on the answers.
Thanks loads in advance.

Hi Doubled58-
Aperture allows you to store your photos in two different ways: Importing the photos into the Aperture Library itself (Aperture calls these "managed photos"), or storing them anywhere on one or more disks and telling Aperture to work with them and leave them in their current location (these are "referenced photos"). It comes down to personal preference-- if you want everything in one simple library file go with the managed route; if instead you prefer to organize things yourself use referenced images. The drawback to managed files is they are more difficult to get to in the Finder since they are buried in the library file; for this reason when you need to export managed images it's best to use the File > Export command within Aperture, or to use the Media Browser in Mail, etc.
To rename one or more photos simultaneously, first select them in the Browser (or Split View, etc), then select Metadata > Batch Change.
Select an appropriate format from the Version Name Format popup and enter a Custom Name if desired. This will rename all of the selected photos within Aperture. If you want to rename the image files on disk as well, check the Apply to Original Files box.
As for your last question: Aperture allows you to have as many photo libraries as you'd like, and you can switch between them at will. If you no longer need the "Aperture 3 Trial Library" or any of the photos within it you can simply drag it to the Trash. The next time you start Aperture it will present a dialog to create or choose a new library. You can also create a new library within Aperture by selecting File > Switch to Library > Other / New, then click the Create New... button. After you choose a name and location for the new library, Aperture will switch to the newly created empty library. You can then move the Aperture 3 Trial Library to the Trash.

  • Photoshop CS3 beta + Aperture problem

Is anyone having any trouble with photos in Aperture that were altered in the new PS CS3 beta?
I sent a photo to CS3 and added a few adjustment layers and when I saved, the thumbnail in Aperture appears as if it's inverted... like a negative. And the full screen version is much higher contrast than the PS version. Exporting a jpg shows the same problem. However, when I open that same image in PS again (using the open in external editor command), everything shows as fine.
Possibly just a bug since CS3 is still in beta?

    Matthew,
You can get this type of effect if you're using Alpha Channels in CS, CS2 etc. Did you by any chance save the image with an additional alpha channel?

  • Snow Leopard iMac 27" Aperture Problem

Aperture refuses to imports some jpg and CR2 images, imports others. Provides no explanation other than "Aperture did not import ..." All taken same time (within seconds) on same camera. Other problems with video card which is approved for replacement. Pictures imported into Aperture without a problem on MacBook Pro using same version of Aperture but only Leopard. Any comments, ideas?

Here is a site that comes up with the boxed "A". http://appletoolbox.com/
I'm pretty sure the site isn't a problem as it comes up fine on my iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro & Mac Pro. Since my daughter's iMac is only a couple of weeks old, I thought there might be a setting or preference that is at fault.

  • Lightroom and Aperture problem

Help! I have both Lightroom and Aperture installed on my computer. I should have never installed both because neither one now works right. I think I need to uninstall Aperture but I am afraid to because Lightroom doesn't seem to be importing pictures correctly! Help me please!! I have over 4000 pics that need to be downloaded off of my camera disc! Also, if I uninstall Aperature, will iphoto still function?

You got a mess on your hands -- don't worry, happens to all of us.
    1. Choose one or the other, but not both.  Either LR or Aperture.  If you have to, play a bit with each. But once you commit, commit all the way and _don't use the other_.
    2.  Find, isolate, and quarantine your digicam "negatives".  Where they are is anybodies guess.  Figure it out, for Aperture and for Lightroom.  Separate them from these programs.  Group them together.  Back them up.
3  Export all "developed" images.  If you already know which program you are going to use, export only those developed in the other program.
    4. Once you have selected to work with either LR or Aperture, import all digicam files and all previously-developed-files into the program you selected.
I have no idea why you LR pics are pixilated, but I would ignore it for now.  You have bigger problems, all caused by an un-flowable workflow.

  • Email From Aperture Problem

Hi I am having difficulty with emailing photographs from Aperture 3 to Newspapers/ Clients. I use Mail to email them but what happens is that the Emails are Exported from Aperture as Rich Text which I have previously discovered causes issues with viewing/ saving images on some peoples computers.
My clients find that the images are imbedded in their email, some have told me they can't save them without removing all the caption info etc and some can't save them at all. I realise the difficulty is probably at their end but the customer is always right and it's up to me to work around it.
I know when the email shows in Mail I can go Format - Make Plain Text but is there any way to get Plain Text by default coming from Aperture 3? I am really in the dark and am assuming that this is my issue but only time will tell.
I had no such issues in Aperture 2

    Hi,
I don't know of a way to insure otherwise. The same problem as existed with A2, and from iPhoto for all time. It makes a difference even if no text at all results from the initial export to Compose.

  • Found the Solution to All of Aperture Problems! Easy Fix.

[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; Please start a new topic about your technical issue. ]
After much tinkering with Aperture 1.0, 1.0.1, and 1.1, I've found the solution for all the problems that Apple is having with Aperture:
They should simply acquire Capture One Pro and use that as the foundation for the RAW conversions in Aperture.

    Hello,
in my opinion Aperture 1.1 is a killer application for editing files. The support for systems with two displays is the best I have worked with. But there are many fields to improve.
    - Quicker, easier and reliable IPTC keywording like iView Media Pro offers.
    - Still needed: better conversion of RAW files. Capture one Pro´s Color tools are very precise. When you are shooting portraits stay with C1. I have to open nearly every image converted with aperture within Photoshop. This is barely needed with C1Pro.
    - The HUD experience is still weak I think. Tweaking an image exactly is painful because the sliders are too small and sometimes a little move of a slider meens a lot of change inside the image.
    - Generated Webpages are full of coding errors. Weird thing: the templates are correct.
    - Versions of images should be marked more clearly. Please show me names or Pop-Up notes or something.
    - Having a closed vault looks good and sounds cool. But for now my vault holds 36 GB. This will grow quickly. I don´t feel good about it. I could use several vaults. For every month, every year. But am I able to search in all of them at the same time? Does Spotlight searches inside Aperture libraries? I dont think so. iView does. So I use iView to keep an eye on my aperture lib. That sound like a joke...
But I like Aperture a lot. It is a revolution. When I work with images I usually have 2 to 6 versions on my harddrive. Plus backups. One original. One for print, one for the web, one for the client and so on. This is all gone with Aperture. And that´s great. But a revolution is not an easy thing. Many things are to improve. And they have to be improved without loosing this Aperture thing.
My conclusion for now: Aperture is a workhorse. It helps a lot to edit images and to distribute them. It helps to keep images organized.
It is not a digital archival system nor a high precision raw converter. When you are shooting lots of images during events - use Aperture. When you are shooting high quality productions use anything what makes sense to you. Aperture is a version number 1.1 We have to be patient until the revolution evolves.

  • Aperture Problems - Redline Badge

Hi, I'm new to this but I do hope there is some kind person out there that can help. My problem has only just occurred due to an aperture update to 3.1.1. I'm running Snow Leopard. My problem is that all my images (even ones I upload now) contain this "redline badge" which means that all my images are now "offline" - which isn't the case although my images are stored on a 10tb Drobo configured so that if any 2 of the 5 discs go down then I can rebuild them from the remaining discs. However I can edit the images and export them - I just have this annoying "red line badge" on every image, so does any out there now how to fix this, I have already carried out "Repair Permissions", "Repair Database" and "Rebuilt Database" none of which have resolved the problem. - Many thanks - David AA

    Hi Frank,
My apologies once again for not replying sooner - Happy New Year. To answer your questions.
1- I assume that you can see the Drobo and the files on it with the Finder? Is there any delay when you access it via the Finder? - I can see the Aperture library on my Drobo FS in the Finder, when I try to open the Aperture folder all the images are loaded and seen in the Aperture software.
2- Is the Drobo connected via USB/Firewire or is it networked? In either case is there any kind of power saving settings on it thats spinning down the disks? Also whats the power settings in the Mac? - not sure how to answer this - but the Drobo FS is connected to my Apple 2tb time capsule - esata.
3- Even though there are really not offline what happens if you attempt to reconnect the images? As an experiment try reconnecting one or two images and see what happens. - not tried this - I would welcome some help as to how to do this function.
4- What happens if you make a brand new empty Aperture library and import into it? Try on both the internal and external drives. Is the Drobo the only external drives you have? Can you get your hands on another external for a short while to see if the problem is only with the Drobo? - Again not tried this, but can tell you that I can export aperture "redlined" images and re-import into Aperture and the problem disappears.
    Many thanks.

  • Several Questions about Aperture Problems

Having used Aperture for some time, and being a Mac user since 1985, I have a list of questions about Aperture that I need help with.
    1. Periodically operating the sliders will make an image turn black. Sometimes this is early in a session, sometimes late. Various workarounds will bring the image back, but once this starts, quitting seems the only option. Can anyone help me with why this happens and how to stop it?
    2. About 20% of the RAW files from my supported camera display the Unsupported Image Format error screen. These files operate perfectly in the manufacturers software and in other image management software that does not use the OS RAW libraries. Can someone help me with the cause of this and the solution (not a "workaround" but a way to make it stop happening).
    3. ALL of my RAW files from my supported camera, when I try to lift metadata, return the error message that there is no metadata to lift. But in fact, the metadata inspector displays metadata. How can I stop this from happening and experience normal metadata lifting?
    4. When I use the DNG format from my supported camera, a great many EXIF fields do not display, such as lens data. Can someone help me with DNG files, since these never generate the UIF error screen (cf. #2 above) as the manufacturer's RAW files do. I'm forced to use DNGs to have all my shots, but the EXIF data is not fully displayed.
    5. Today I opened Aperture and no previews would display. Aperture froze while updating thumbnails. I'd not done any non-routine edits or imported any unusual files or formats. Aperture then would not quit. Is it safe to attempt to restart Aperture?
    6. At times Aperture slows to the point of not working at all. Long pauses simply in trying to enlarge the selection circles for redeye removal, for example. What would cause Aperture to slow down without warning at any point in the workflow? How can I experience a more consistent operating speed from Aperture.
    7. How do other image management programs like Lightroom compare on these points? Is Aperture typical or should I seek a change in my workflow, improvement in my hardware, or some adjustment in my installation?
Info: MacBook Pro, 4 GB RAM (apple), 320 GB drive, 45 GB free on drive; library of 3800 images. Fewer than 12 projects.
    Thanks for your assistance.

n #3. It looks like you're absolutely right on this. I went back and checked on photos I'd edited and there was the altered metadata. +Many thanks for dispelling that concern!+ I love being a happy camper. Check that one off the list!
On 1, I've followed the black-screen issues and pretty much all we know is that a workaround exists--usually selecting the crop box restores the picture, but a lot of times it blacks out again. Having used Apple products over 25 years, all of which was in my adult professional life, I haven't seen Apple willing to just let users tolerate an irritating "workaround." I think this is something that needs fixing.
On 6--I don't understand how the rotational speed would produce erratic performance issues. I can go a month of reasonable performance, and then suddenly things bog down. Also, if that is the reason, this really ought to be part of the System Requirements, or at least, a recommendation. Maybe it is already--I should check to be sure. I confess this is one aspect I had not thought about.
Thanks so much for thinking about these. I love my Apple products and have owned almost every generation of Mac since the "Fat Mac" (512K RAM! 800Kb Floppies!) and hate to stare at the screen and think I've been given a truly poor product--not in my DNA--but these things break my heart.

  • Editing in PS CS 5 / re-save edited version back to Aperture problems with image display

I use Aperture and send images into CS 5 but since latest Aperture update the images don't always display the adjusted version.  A re-start of Aperture is required. Any suggestions appreciated.  Never had any issues before.

  • PS Unsharp Mask and Aperture problems

Okay, this is bugging the **** out of me.
From Aperture I open up an image with external editor (PhotoShop), select an area, sharpen it using unsharp mask and save it. It shows up in Aperture, however the selected sharpened area is fine but the area I did not select and sharpen has disappeared and shows up in the main window as back and the thumbnail, white.
I’ve tried flattening the image in Photoshop but to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Simon

Are ypu by any chance using alpha channels? Aperture does not support alpha channels and you can end up with exactly the effect you describe.
If you are using alpha channels, you need to finalize their usage and remove the additional alpha channels before saving the image back to Aperture.

Experiencing Aperture problems with Snow Leopard - Probably best I just show you -

I think its a graphical display issue as it doesn't appear when viewing the image in full screen. Happens across multiple RAW images. If I resize and force a new preview its seems to correct the image. But its incredibly annoying as it makes any adjustments very difficult to preview.
Any suggestions? Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

    Same exact issue.
it happens on both internal lcd (15") and when connected through DVI to my 24" monitor. seems random, I have noticed during editing of one file, it showed up. I then adjusted exposure and it went away, then came back when I adjusted something else and went away again.

  • Error message exporting large picture file from Aperture 3.5

Recently I took a large panaramic comprised of 165 pictures using Gigapan Epic Pro and stitched together using software provided with Gigapan. I exported the stitched file into Aperture to perform final edits.  When I go to export the final version I keep getting an error message. The file size will be approximately 2.0 GB. I've been able to export a 0.7 GB file without problems (it did take several minutes). I have a late 2009 27" iMac with 3.3 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 16 GB memory. Any suggestions?  Not sure if this is an Aperture problem or if my system is not up to the task. Below is the error mesage I receive.  Thanks for your assistance.

    Testing: Exporting a large TIFF - the original is 24512 × 23016 (564,2 MP), 1.05 GB
The exported file that I am seeing on my Desktop after 10 minutes, is showing this in the Preview:
But after exporting there was no message at - neither an error message nor the usual alert when finished "Export 1 version completed - Reveal ...".
So, I am not yet conviced that the export went well, but Aperture can export gigantic TIFFs.
What is the file format you have been using? My test was done with TIFF, 16 bit.

  • Aperture referencing files to time machine HD instead of from 'working' HD

Every once in a while I will go into a project see the "broken link" icon on my previews. In Finder I check the location I have all my images stored (and initially referenced) on an external HD. They are there.
I go to File>>Locate Referenced Files and see the referenced images have been changed to a location on my separate Time Machine external HD. I locate them and everything is fine but it's annoying.
I don't not have Time Machine on automatic because I have a laptop and like to choose when it backs up. I've looked through other Time Machine/Aperture problems and couldn't find anything. Does any one know of a setting, advice, or have experienced this at all?
    Thanks.

Thanks. Sorry, for the delay to answer your questions:
I'm the only one managing the files, and it has happened quite a few times now. The files are in multiple projects ranging from recent imports to projects from a few years ago.
I didn't need to use "File→Relocate Master ..." just the "File→Locate Referenced Files" because my masters are still intact on my working HD. It says that my previous location was on "Volumes/Time Machine/photography/...etc." when I always import masters to "Volumes/My book/photography/...etc"
Does Aperture notice if I move master files because my thought is that Aperture is noticing my TM copying files to another HD and then referencing those instead of my original working HD I import to. Then, the next time I open Aperture it cannot reference the Time Machine files.
Is it because I have TM (USB) backing up my internal HD and my external working HD (FW800)?

  • Photostream in Aperture not working correctly

I have turned on Photostream on my Mac and in Aperture. Photos taken with my iPhone appear in my photo stream, and also in the photo stream in Aperture.
However, photos I import into Aperture from my camera do NOT appear in photo stream. Also, even if I drag and drop photos in Aperture into the Photo Steam folder thing, I get the "updating photo stream" status bar message in Aperture, but the photos never appear.
    This is driving me crazy.

I have the EXACT same problem...All worked well for months.  A few days ago the problem started in the middle of an import in Aperture.  Half the pics got through, made it to the folder and streamed to my other devices before it stopped working...and now it won't work at all.  Since its working the other way (when a pic is taken from my iO5 devices they appear in the Aperture Photostream folder) it makes me think this is an Aperture problem.
Curious if you've figured anthing out...I may reset photostream to see if that works but I don't want to lose my handy photostream file with 1000 pics on it.

  • Using photoshop elements 9 as an external editor - after saving in Photoshop the results do not display in Aperture

I set up my external editor as Photoshop Elements 9, I follow the instructions to edit a selected image in the external editor. When finished editing in Photoshop, I hit Save (not Save As), and go back to Aperture, and the work I did in Photoshop does not display in Aperture. Is there anything else I need to do to make the work I did in Photoshop display in Aperture?

I had the same problem with PSE 10, and this soution worked for me.  Thanks.  But is this the real answer?  Isn't there a way to save the file without having to add an "f" to the suffix?  It doesn't seem to make sense to me.  Is it an Aperture problem or PSE?  I went to the Apple store amnd the so-called aperture/photoshop expert spent an hour trying to figure it out and finally got the answer by reading this post!!!
