Aperture reducing brightness to 120 candella

Apple Care tells me that my screen can be only lowered to 140 candella. Apparently Photoshop supports down to 140 candella.
My objective is to lower my screen to 120 candella for printing purposes and also so that it matches the back of my LCD display on my DSLR camera.
I'm told I will have to download Shades or Color Eyes to do so.
A 2nd alternative would be to simply adjust Aperture which I use primarily. I also use iPhoto for personal photos. Does anyone know how to fix this problem please?

Can I ask why you would want you Mac to match the screen on your camera?
The screen on your camera can not be calibrated for colour, though its brightness can be adjusted for the viewing environment.
The quality of you computer monitor and the software supporting it is able to be calibrated, what you should be wanting to do is to calibrate your computer for optimum editing and output device compatibility. Ideally you want to see how your image is going to look when it goes to print or another form of output device.
Your camera screen is great for previewing and is limited in its ability to accurately represent a scene and file quality. Use your histogram to get more info on camera. Another idea would be, once the computer is calibrated, compare the images on the back of the camera with those on the computer so you get an idea of how what is on the camera will look on screen.

My screen reduces brightness while using my apple tv - any suggestions?

Does it just look darker all the time or does the brightness change over time?
If it just looks darker, check Settings>Video and if set to RGB Low try RGB High or YCrCb.
I was watching a digital copy of final Harry Potter last night that came bundled with the Blu Ray - could not believe how dark the film was - I used to routinely use RGB Low on AppleTV1, and such settings options have only just appeared on AppleTV2.  I could see hardly any shadow detail on RGB Low, much improved on RGB High.

  • Can aperture reduce my iPhoto library size?

Hi, I have spent hours reading lots of discussions and whilst, maype part of my questions have possibly been answered somewhere else, I cannot get a definitive answer to everything I need to know.  I undrestand that aperture is different to iphoto, but I am confused by some of the answers regarding libraries that I have read! Any opinions or answers are gratefully received...
I have read that aperture organises the photo library differently to save space when compared to iPhoto that I understand makes duplicates for every change/edit that you make to a photo. My current photo library is nearly 120GB and I want to get some space back! I have external drives that I could move my iphoto library onto, but I want to keep my photos (well, certainly half of it) on the internal drive as I work away from plug sockets often and my 3TB drive needs power.
If I purchase aperture, do I import my library into aperture and will it then reduce my library down in size?
I know that iphoto and aperture can share a library, but can I split my library into photos onto my hard drive that I don't often need and keep the ones that I want on my internal drive?  Would iphoto and aperture be able to work fully if the external hard drive wasn't connected? My thinking is that only aperture can cope with having multiple libraries on multiple drives to work with at the same time, and that iphoto needs one complete library on one drive
I am happy with many of the photos that I have edited from years past ie rotation, red-eye correction and can't see a reason for every wanting to revert to the original.  Can I just export these as full size jpegs to my external drive and then delete them from iphoto to reduce the multiple versions of each photo it keeps, before re-importing them into iphoto which means it will only make retain 1 copy of the photo (the one that I need)?
Huge thanks for taking the time to read this!
    Neil

I have read that aperture organises the photo library differently to save space when compared to iPhoto that I understand makes duplicates for every change/edit that you make to a photo.
It uses the same Library format as iPhoto, so no, it doesn't organise the library differently. It gives no thought to saving space. Digital photography with a non-destructive workflow uses a lot of space. iPhoto makes no duplicates. It has a preview of an edited version. One thing that Aperture can do is not generate the preview. But that means no integration with other apps, and you'll need to export the shot everytime you want to email or use an image in a document etc.
Frankly, I don't think that space would be a reason to migrate to Aperture.
My current photo library is nearly 120GB and I want to get some space back! I have external drives that I could move my iphoto library onto, but I want to keep my photos (well, certainly half of it) on the internal drive as I work away from plug sockets often and my 3TB drive needs power.
    Split the Library. It's cheaper:
Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
If I purchase aperture, do I import my library into aperture and will it then reduce my library down in size?
No you just open it. It doesn't change it in any way without further intervention from you.
See above. I don't think you need Aperture. iPhoto can have the same number of Libraries as Aperture - i.e as many as you want.
Yes you can, but you might want to ask yourself why you're using a non-destructive workflow at all, if you're going to that bother to try and defeat it?
IMHO: there are many excellent reasons for moving on from iPhoto to Aperture - and they are all to do with the limited nature of iPhoto's tools. You mention one of them. I think that the suggestion I have above is the way to go forward, with multiple libraries.

  • Reducing brightness to zero = sleeping display?

    Hello.
In the Energy Saver settings I read that "never letting the display sleep may shorten it's life". But I really don't like that timer sleep thing. However, whenever I see fit, I turn the brightness to zero, until it goes darkest. Is this in any way similar to "sleeping"?
My question is does turning the brightness to zero whenever possible help increase the display's life?
What other tips do you have in this regard?
    Bye,
    Mircea

No, dimming the display is not the same as sleeping the display. When you dim it manually all you turn off is the backlight while the LCD display remains on. By manually dimming the display you are extending the life of the backlight which usually fails before the LCD.
I don't understand why you don't like the display sleep timer? If you are using the machine it won't turn off. I usually set my timer to 15-20 minutes. If I don't touch a key in that amount of time I'm generally not using it.
Are you having issues with the auto display dim? That is when the display dims but still remains on but at a low level? If so you can disable that in the Energy Saver control panel. Just deselect "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep".

  • Reduce brightness of Full Screen background

How can I do that please? It's rather too bright for me.

Hmm it would be a weird coincidence if it was with the host page or with youtube, since it happened immediately after I upgraded.
I'm using the latest version of Firefox, and I'm using the AdBlocker Add-on.
An Example page? Do you mean a link to a page where this is happening?
    http://www.spikednation.com/evideo/baby-loves-beer
It seems to happen mostly on embedded videos.(Facebook is another place where it happens.)
It looks fine in normal mode but when you go to fullscreen the background turns white.
Any other info that might help?  Thanks

  • Reducing brightness in bootcamp on Windows 7 to save battery

Im running a 2010 Macbook and the only way I have been able to adjust the brightness in bootcamp on Windows 7 is manually:
Control Panel > Harware & Sound > Adjust Screen Resolution > Advanced Settings > GeoForce 9400M Tab > Start the NVIDIA control panel > Drag all of the sliders for brightness and gamma etc to the left.
This is the only way I have been able to adjust the screen brigthness so as to save on battery.
There has to be a driver somewhere that you can download as this is so annoying!
Does anyone know how to improve on this method?
    Steve T.

you have to install Cirrus audio driver - Apple doesn't provide one.

  • Aperture Reduces Image pixels & size when exporting or importing. Why?

For some reason I can no longer find my original "master images" which I imported via a link from my PC.
I scanned the negatives at a high enough resolution/output size for an 11"x14" PRINT.
However, now I have a different version of that scanned image at 1708 x960 pixels.
Why does this happen to all of my exported images, even when I drag & drop these images to the desk top?
    Many thanks,
    Stressed-out aperture user.

I'm not sure if I understand your post exactly.
What size in pixels were the original scans? - 11" x 14" doesn't tell us much as we don't know how many PPI.
Assuming you are using Aperture to manage your masters (importing them into the Aperture Library) then you should be able to export them at whatever size you want.
Perhaps you were using referenced masters and have lost the external master files? - If so, then I think Aperture will only have "previews" available at whatever resolution you have chosen as the default.

  • How to reduce screen brightness below standard level

    Hi !
How to reduce screen brightness below standard level in ThinkPad T520 ?
I think it is possible somehow, but I don't know how. I reduced brightness to zero using Fn key + End key, but it's not enough, I want to make screen darker, because my eyes get tired.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The latest Intel graphics driver (from Lenovo) is here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-77038
This should provide a decent lower bound to brightness. If the install complains about unsupported hardware, force the install using Device Manager and Have Disk. (Something like this: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/11997-have-disk-method-for-windows-7-vista/ )
If that didn't work, try f.lux (https://justgetflux.com/). It has a software dimming feature (of course, this loses contrast).

  • MacBook Pro Repeatedly Loads Purple & Teal Stripe, Gray, Light Blue, Bright Blue and Bright Blue Stripe Screens Instead of OS after Optical Drive Replacement by Apple (PICTURES INCLUDED)

17 inch March 26-29 (order date – shipping date) 2011 MacBook Pro, 256GB Solid State Drive, 2.3 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, 1 processer, 4 Cores, 256 KB L2 Cache per core, 8 MB L3 Cache, 8 GB Memory (8GB 1333MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB), AMD Radeon HD 6750M Video Card, Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 512 MB total of VRAM. 110 GBs of free/unused disk space remaining.
Full Specs are in subsequent post.
The issues described in the title continue even after I’ve reinstalled the operating system twice (Snow Leopard) and installed Mavericks (which is working fine and even faster). I’ve tried many commands to repair this.
If anyone has experienced any of the symptoms above or below, your advice and response will be much appreciated as well as marked. These are the details:
My Early 2011 MacBook Pro has had the typical blue screens, screen freezes and graphics issues since I bought it about three years ago but nothing like this and NEVER any load issues until about a month ago. That was when my superdrive replacement was put in.
Since then my MacBook Pro will go into hard freezes or kernel panics. Then I’ll have to power it down manually and power it up manually. It’ll then refuse to load the OS until after multiple tries. It started out just 2 or 3, then 4 or 5, then 6-12, then 20. Now it takes over 30 boots to load the OS. These boot issues also occur even if it doesn’t freeze, i.e.: when I shut it down or restart it naturally (via the Apple menu, etc.).
95% of the time it’ll load to a gray screen instead of the OS. 4% of the time it’ll load to a light blue screen. Then there are the others: the first time this happened it loaded to the striped purple and teal screen shown in the picture. This happened the next four times then intermittently for about 5 or so more times.
It also loaded gray flickering screens. Flickering screens also occurred right before it froze and had to be manually powered down and up. Then it began to load regular gray and light blue screens and all flickering screens stopped. And then bright blue screens a couple times intermittently for a few days, sometimes with lines. Sometimes it’ll load to a blank/black screen as well. I’d reset the NVRAM and SMC but it still continued, happening multiple times a day, each time taking more and more hard shut downs and hard power ons to finally load the OS.
Until I installed Mavericks, every time it finally loaded the OS Finder began indexing. After Mavericks this has occurred 95% of the time.
After talking to Apple Support they had me do a NVRAM and SMC reset again over the phone. The MacBook Pro refused to load the entire time we were on the phone. After the call it got worse. It froze over 6 times that day and at worse took over 30 boots to load the OS.
I finally had time to deal with it the next day when it froze again. After over 25 boots it loaded and I put in the Snow Leopard OS dvd and ran Disk Utility. I verified the hard drive and it said it was fine. Repaired the disk anyway and it gave this message at the end:
“Updating boot support partitions for volume required”.
Next I tried to start in safe mode and it just hung up for hours. Then started up in single mode and it loaded the OS. It then loaded normally for three times in a row. I reinstalled Snow Leopard. Everything loaded normally. I waited an hour or so and then I downloaded Mavericks. 5 or so hours later Mavericks was installed. Everything hardware wise was fine for a day and all software issues were easily fixable incompatibilities. My Mac was even faster with Mavericks. However, Photoshop did give a perhaps relevant message:
“Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer’s website for the latest software.
GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences.”
(I have OpenGL enabled in Photoshop and it was already checked when this error occurred).
Two days ago I went to Disk Utility to repair permissions while logged in to a non-admin account. Verified and repaired the disk, then verified permissions. Everything fine. After repairing permissions however, it gave a weird error box:
"Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
The box stayed “stuck” in the Disk Utility window. My MacBook Pro then failed to do anything. I manually powered it down and up. It loaded to a gray screen with the error message box again: "Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
It then refused to load anything else but this message box on a gray screen even after rebooting it multiple times in safe, verbose and single modes and after resetting the NVRAM and SMC. I went online with an iPad and entered in the error and got some advice. I tried to run fsck and erase the /var/folders/ via single user mode but it still loaded to a gray screen with the error message. I just decided to skip to the end and Cmd-R loaded into recovery mode and reinstalled Mavericks again. That worked: the message has not appeared since.
Some people have said this error is related to a hard drive cable failure. I know that this cable was tampered with during the optical drive replacement procedures because I watched them do it.
Everything was fine for a day. Then yesterday my MacBook Pro froze while trying to open a VLC file. It took 12 boots to load the OS.  I tried single mode once and verbose mode once. 10 times it loaded to gray screens, even in those mode. A Safe boot lead to a bright blue screen. Finally reset the SMC and it loaded on the 12th time.
Just five hours ago the same thing happened except it took over 30 boots to load the OS. Single, verbose and normal boots, NVRAM and SMC resets lead to gray screens.  Safe boots lead to bright blue screens with and without lines (see pictures). Finally loaded on a normal boot.
I know I should have tried safe booting, verbose, single and recovery modes, disk utility, fsck and other command methods earlier this month but in the end, these methods have not solved the problem anymore than resetting the NVRAM or SMC.
There seems to be conclusive evidence that it’s a hardware problem, stemming from last month, the FIRST AND ONLY time my MacBook Pro was opened up. Maybe it’s the hard drive cable, but it could also be the graphics card and/or logic board (something that’s always been defective on this MacBook Pro, in my opinion). Many early 2011 MacBook Pro owners have given evidence to the latter possibility online.
The first time it started it seemed to stem from me using iPhoto and Photoshop a lot. I had both running continuously for about two weeks. This is another reason for suspecting the graphics card/logic board is at fault (in addition to three years of screen/graphics glitches). And since the card is soldered to the board and the board connected to the cable...I also have serious battery draining issues, something else that got bad after the Apple Superdrive repair. And the battery is connected to the board...
Also, since downloading Mavericks, windows from every app get blurry/fuzzy when I scroll or zoom in. I have read that this is happening to a lot of folks though for various reasons.
I guess it could always be the hard drive. I just don’t know. I’m taking it in to Apple, but can't right away because it’s not local.  I know they’ll be able to run a test on the hard drive. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem (especially the purple and teal striped screen) before they start poking around, possibly creating another problem that goes beyond my Apple Care Plan allotment.

  • 20" ACD brightness / Eye-One 2 problem

So I go to do my normal calibration with my Eye-One Display 2 on my 20" ACD and it goes fine, although I am surprised to see that the brightness level has fallen to like, 75cd/m2. So I turn up the brightness to 120, calibrate. Fine. Then I go to do a second profile (at D50) and when it gets to the brightness calibration, it says I'm down to 113cd/m2! What's going on!? Did my monitor drop from 120 to 113 in 2 minutes without my noticing? Or is the Eye-One broken/dead/unreliable? Or am I missing something else..?

Oh - btw - I didn't move the calibrator so it can't be inconsistencies in the backlight unless the backlight is fading uniformly.

  • Aperture file tripled in size after importing iPhoto

My iPhoto folder is 43GB and contains 20K images. When I imported into Aperture my aperture file grew to 120 GB. I deleted the albums in aperture which contained duplicate files, but my aperture file is still 120GB. Why is this and how can I get it down to 43GB. BTW, my aperture library shows 20K images so I don't understand why my file size is so large. Thanks.

    what type of files ???
do you have previews turned on ???
what size and res of previews ???
it is possible but a 300% increase is not likely ...
what is telling you 120GB ???
    Message was edited by: tidysteve
btw ... if you use a managed library it will never be the same size as all your photos ... always bigger ... thumbnails, sidecar files, previews, etc all take up space ...

  • Change Screen Brightness

Is there any way to adjust the brightness of the screen in Adobe Air for Desktop (running in Windows 8.1)?
I have an app that I want to always run at full screen brightness.
If not, does anyone know of any ANEs that will work?
If also not, does anyone know where to find a tutorial on making ANEs?

I you not familar with Native Extensions and C++ / C - you can try avoid using it using already done external apps. Just find one that can work in background so users will not see it.
http://www.nelsonpires.com/software/dimmer/ go there and download simple app.
Using executing NativeProcess you can run it. But before you can edit Opacity value in XML. So scheme may be next:
    1) using adobe air edit xml and update opacity value
    2) attach listener to main app exit so when you close it - you also must termiate your Dimmer
    3) run Dimmer with NativeProcess API from Adobe Air
    4) when you exit from main app - listener from step 2 will fire and you must close Dimmer from step using exit() method
This app actually not reduce brightness and just add black overlay with opacity. In most cases it's work prefectly. When you need to terminate external NativeProcess just call exit()
You may note that if you have some external app that can cover your functionality - better to use it instead developing own DLL Because Developing DLLs require addition skills.

  • Does Export Version reduces image quality?

    Hi,
I got smaller file size when I "export version" at "original size". My master was jpeg of 5.1MB and I exported in jpeg format, I got 3.6MB. If I "export master", I do get 5.1MB. What does Aperture do to the jpeg image that reduces the file size?
Then I played around with "image quality", which is 10 by default. If I set it to 11, I got a file of 4.1 MB, still smaller than the original 5.1MB. Set it to 12 I got a file of 10.4MB. I am kind of confused. I guess the "image quality" relates to degree of jpeg compression, and a 12 setting means that Aperture compresses the jpeg image at a lower compression ratio than my camera? Does Aperture uncompress jpeg image and re-compress it when "export version"?
The bottom line is, how do I preserve image quality after adjustments? In other words, I would like to export at the same image quality as my original photo, or as close as possible (I assume Aperture reduces jpeg image quality a bit every time I apply adjustments to the image via export). Thanks much for your time.

    Wanderzhuanyou wrote:
    2) When I make adjustments in Aperture I actually work on the image Aperture produces out of the master file - which should be about 73MB in my computer memory as the size of the image is 2848 x 4272 and Aperture works in 16 bit.
Internally, Core Image (which Aperture uses) actually works in 32-bit, but your basic idea is right.
    3) When I export, Apertures compresses this 73MB image (assume adjustments don't make much difference to the image size) to a jpeg file.
First the image will be reduced to the bit depth of your export preset. Image adjustments will make quite a difference to the final file size because areas of high definition detail and a large tonal range will both increase the file size for a given compression setting. So any sharpening, for example, will increase the file size.
As a test, export an image with no sharpening applied, then add some edge sharpening and export it again. You should see a noticeable difference in file sizes.
    Correct?
    Pretty much.
