Aperture skipping import of similar file names?

I discovered this this other day and raised the question in a "top 10 Aperture Suggestions" post. I've done more investigating since then without coming up with a solution. So I'm going to post it as it's own question here.
Up to now my workflow has included aquiring images from either a negative scanner (which creates a TIFF), or a Nikon D100 digital camera (which creates an NEF). From there I open up the original in Photoshop, make any manipulations I need to and save the new file as a psd in the SAME folder as the original. I can easily keep track of images I have manipulated because I can see the psd right next to the original TIFF or NEF.
I end up with images called something like photo01.TIFF and photo01.psd. They are completely different files, the TIFF being the original and the psd being the cleaned up, manipulated version - both in the same folder.
Here's the problem. Aperture doesn't recognize that there are two different files there. Perhaps because the file names before the extension are the same, it ignores the second one during the import process.
During my latest experiment I took an original TIFF scan of a negative called 129_20.TIFF, opened it in photoshop, did some color correction, and saved it back to the same folder, calling it 129_20.psd. I also created a smaller websized jpg of the same image and called it 129_20.jpg. Now even though there are three files in the folder with admittedly similar file names, anyone would be able to tell that they are actually different files, the original TIFF, the modified psd, and the jpg for the web.
When I try to import those images into Aperture using either the Import>Folders into a Project command, or the Import>Images command, Aperture only sees the original TIFF and only imports that TIFF instead of the three that are in the folder. If I take the TIFF out of the folder and try again, now Aperture sees the jpg file and I can import that, but not the psd. If I take both the TIFF and the jpg out of the folder and try again, of course only now does it see the psd.
Once the images are imported into Aperture, I notice that file name extensions are not visible under the images, so unless I click on one and use the Info window or ToolTips to show the meta data, I cannot easily see which version of the image I'm looking at in Aperture because it doesn't display the .TIFF, .psd, or .jpg extensions.
This is troubling to me and I hope I've simply not come across some setting somewhere that will help Aperture "see" my different versions of the same image. There doesn't seem to be anything on the boards or the Aperture manual directly about this. I've stopped importing because after 14,000 images, I've realized I'm "missing" all of my Photoshop corrected ones. Before I continue importing, I'd like to figure out if there is a work-around, if it's operator error, or if Aperture doesn't can't tell the difference between similar files names with different extentions.
Sorry about the length of this, but I'm trying to be thorough.

Yes I discovered exactly the same thing whilst trying to overcome another problem - that aperture lost metadata on tiffs saved with IBM PC bytes rather than Mac bytes ( in this case out of house scans done on a PC ). I tried saving my files as tiff Mac, psd and jpg in the same folder but with the same name apart from the extension. As you say Aperture only sees them as one file ( although it adds up their combined file size according to the image information dialogue box window ). On import it only imports one file. If you use the 'Import Folders into a project' option from the file menu it sees the three files in the navigation section OK but again only imports one. I then experimented with doing major changes in image size and adjustments and of course that made no difference.
I did find that I could import the files individually by dragging them one by one into a project but of course that is no help if you have thousands to import.
After some thought I decided that perhaps that was in tune with the idea behind Aperture being that you have only one master file which you then repurpose and export as required. My conclusion about Aperture at the moment is that it would be great if we were all starting from scratch but that it is struggling to cope with the admittedly enormous task of dealing with photographers who have massive libraries of existing images created, processed, keyworded and stored in all sorts of programs. Clearly we all need access to these and the info they contain as well as dealing with our future work.
Sorry not to be more help.
Best wishes

  • How to import songs by file name (not by song name)

    Hi
    I've got many files with different names yet they all have same song name (the website precisely!!!). When I import them into iTunes, all of them appear with same song name (such as www.apple.com). Is there anyway I can import them by file name as song name???
    Thanks

    iTunes uses the id3 tags, not the file name to determine the information that is displayed. There is no way that I know of to change this. Are you saying the songs have the same title, artist name, and album name but they're different songs?
    Check out Doug's Scripts. There may be something useful there.

  • Saving documents with similar file names

    When saving documents with similar file names, I used to be able to hit save as button and go to the file folder I wish to use. I could then click an existing file in the folder to draw in the name and then just modify it slightly to create the new name.
    In Reader DC I get an error saying this is a read only file an can not be saved.  I can save the file if I use a different file name but then I have to go in and rename the file. i.e. if I have a weakly report that I save, I may have the file name "Installerspayroll.we.04.25.15.pdf."
    I used to be able to click on the existing file name to bring it into the name box and then just change the date. The updated version is not allowing me to do that, creating more work.

  • How to import MP3 with file name into library, rather than tag?

    I've been given a CD with about 200 MP3s of lectures. They are to be listened to in order, and the file names reflect the order number, like "lecture 1", "lecture 2", etc. However, when I drag them all into iTunes, the names in the iTunes library don't include the file names - they are simply "lecture", which I guess must come from a tag in the MP3 file. So iTunes is ignoring the file name and thus I end up with 200 entries in my iTunes library that can't be ordered properly. How can I get it to use the file name when importing?
    Mike

    If you have your iTunes preferences set to keep your iTunes Music folder organized, it's possible that even the file names have changed according to the files' tags. In that case, you'll need to (at least temporarily) disable this option and import the files from your CD again.
    Once you're sure the files have been successfully added to your iTunes library and the file names kept intact, you can use the Filenames to Song Names script from Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes.
    This should get everything sorted out.

  • Java.io.File only returns similar file names

    I have written a bean which reads a directory and places the file names in an array, which can be accessed by a JSP page. At first, the files inside the directory were named wb_1.jsp, wb_2.jsp, wb_3.jsp and so on. When I change a filename to something like work.jsp, it still appears in the file list, but when I rename it to something like identify.jsp, it doesn't!
    If I count the array, it does read the correct number of files.
    Class FileHandler
    // Imports
    import java.io.File;
    // Class
    public class FileHandler
         // Constants and variables
         public File dir;
         public File[] files;
          * Returns the number of files found inside the given directory
         public int showFiles()
              try
                   setDir(getDir());     // Get file directory as set in the bean property
                   files = dir.listFiles();     // List the files found inside the directory
              catch (Exception e)
                   System.out.println(e + " : No files found to return a value");
              return files.length;      // Return the number of files
          * Returns the file name by using the in value in the files array
         public String returnFileName(int in)
              return files[in].getName();     // Return the name of the file
          * Sets dir file type to the setproperty value in
         public void setDir(File in)
              dir = in;     // Set class variable value for dir
          * Returns the dir value
         public File getDir()
              return dir;     // Return the setproperty value for dir
    }And the JSP code which reads the array
    out.println("<select onChange=\"jumpMenu('top',this,0)\" size=\"5\" style=\"width: 200\"");
    String fileName = new String();
    for(int x=0; x<file.showFiles(); x++)
         fileName = file.returnFileName(x);
         out.println("<option selected value=\"beheer.jsp?action=2&file=" +  fileName + "\">" +  fileName +"</option>");
    out.println("</select>");

    I forgot bean properties im the above code lines. Here it is, just in case.
    <jsp:useBean id="file" class="FileHandler" scope="page" />
    <jsp:setProperty name="file" property="dir" value="C:\\IBM Websphere workspace\\Project\\Web Content\\WEB-INF\\include" />

  • Missing Breadcrumbs Caused by Similar File Names

    Using RH9
    Producing both WebHelp and HTML Help (with missing breadcrumbs the same in both)
    Using only the SSL option to generate the breadcrumbs
    As in some previously posted cases, a few topics in a large project are missing breadcrumbs. There are no quotation marks or other unsual characters in the file names or titles. I was able to narrow down one error to something I could fix in a test project.
    In the following HHC entries, the breadcrumbs were missing from the "General Ledger Processing Recap (AM72)" topic when the help was generated. (Everything after the second item is a bookmarked TOC entry, with no breadcrumbs expected, but I left those items in the example in case they make a difference.)

    But when I changed the file name of the parent topic from General_Ledger_Options.htm to GenLdgrOpt.htm, the breadcrumbs appeared correctly in the output for the parent and child topics.
    This stragegy for fixing the breadcrumb problem seems to be hit-or-miss. For example, I've tried the same approach to fix another topic and have had no success so far. Is there anything about how breadcrumbs are generated that would explain how renaming the file would fix the problem?

    Rick,
    I think you are right about the file name length being an important factor, but the cause doesn't seem to be as simple as a too-deep nesting level. I was able to fix the problem in another topic by shortening the file name of the topic that preceded it at the same level.
    The one hard case that remains is a topic that contains a lot of bookmarked subheadings. I found that if I cut that topic's number of subheading TOC entries to 33, the breadcrumbs for the topic worked, but with 34 TOC entries, they did not. My best guess is that there is a limitation of some kind on the internal aggregation of TOC information -- including information about siblings and children.
    By the way, I also tried inserting breadcrumb placeholders, instead of automatically generating them. That caused RoboHelp to crash (instead of just failing to add breadcrumbs to the offending topic). When I removed the placeholder from the bad topic, it worked OK with the other topics.

  • Problem importing to mp3_ file name will not change

    I have experienced this problem multiple times before and still can't find the solution.
    Every-time I Import a Cd to "MP3" a weird file name is created. When I located the mp3 after import then try to rename it. I notice that the weird file name is still saved and appears always on top of the player (quicktime)
    how do i fix this bug?

    Steve--
    Do you have the "save as a copy" checkbox checked in your "save as" dialog box? If that is checked, you save a file with the new name and keep your working filename the same. If it is not checked, you save a file with the new name and the open document filename does not change.
    If you're talking about changing the name of the file in the finder after the save, you're right. The open Photoshop document will not know that the filename has changed since the save. If you hit save, it will create a new file with the old name.

  • How do I view imported pictures in file name order?

    I have an extensive picture library on my NAS which I would like to see on my iPad and/or AppleTV. I have made folders available for viewing and I've also imported some actual JPEG files to the iPad using iTunes. Try as I might, I cannot get these files to display in file name order (they are all named by date and time). Is there a way?

    Not using the built in photos app. You'll need to search for a third party app. I'm afraid I don't have any to recommend because I've never looked for any, but the default for the built in app is to sort by date/event.

  • HOW DO I IMPORT PHOTOS BY FILE NAME TO THE IPAD 2

    I need to organize my photos in my ipad by the file names that i have on my computer. I use a windows computer.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    See this article:
    iOS and iPod: Syncing photos using iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
    (the title says iPod, but it should work for iPad as well)
    You need first to connect your iPad to your PC for the sync options to be available:
    Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed.
    In iTunes, select your device's icon in the Devices list on the left.
    Click the Photos tab.
    Choose "Sync photos from."

  • MDIS skipping import of blank files

    Hi All,
    I have a situation where in the Inbound Port at times a blank text file /0KB file arrives . Since the port is set for automated polling the blank file also gets picked up and moves to the Archive . However there is an integration process which needs to write contents /data in that file .This process of writing has a time lag of few seconds . Since the file has moved to Archive by that time  the process do not find place to write its content .
    Is there any way we can configure MDIS not to import any 0 KB file .
    Thanks,
    Prabuddha

    Hi Prabuddha,
    I agree with Christian that there is no such setting in MDM.
    I would suggest if you are using PI as middle ware to send this 0 kb xml file at ready folder, you can stop this in PI.
    In PI>communication Channel>Processing Tab-->Empty-Message Handling=Ignore.
    So in this way file with Empty XML file (0 KB) at ready folder of MDM  will not come and thus will not go Archive folder.

  • Any ideas when I can use Aperture to import my raw files from Nikon D4s.

    Had it a month now and still waiting. Really disappointed I cant get going properly with my new camera. All that money and I have to use it

  • Aperture does not import Nikon JPG files when RAW and JPG

    I own a Nikon D2x that I download files to a Sony 40GB portable HD. When I shoot in RAW + JPG only the RAW file is imported when I connect the Sony HD to my Mac and import to Aperture.
    If I open the Sony disk Icon on the Desktop, I can see both the RAW and the JPG. In fact I can finder copy both files to the Desktop with no problem.
    Even when I connect the camera itself, the jpg files are not imported.
    This makes me think I should just shoot in RAW and save the space on the memory card.
    Why does Aperture not import the JPG files?

    it does import them ... but only displays the RAW file ... if you drill down into the library package you will see them ...
    here are threads dealiing with same issue ...

    I keep my photos on an external disk and import them from that disk into iPhoto. When I import, sometimes the file name is imported into the caption field and sometimes it does not.
    Any ideas why? I have search for others posts but can't find any. I did check the permissions of the files representing both results and the permissions are the same.

    What is displayed in the title field under the thumbnails?
    Have you tried selecting the offending photos, going to the Photos->Batch Change menu and selecting Title to File Name option?

  • The Organizer – Using file names as captions in SlideShow

    I am using Vista.
    I just switched from using ZoomBrowser to The Organizer and I have a collections of thousands of photos. In ZoomBrowser I could show the file names (which I used to describe the slide) at the bottom of the slides during a slide show. I have not found such a feature in The Organizer. Is there one?
    Otherwise, is there a method whereby I can do a batch import of the file names into the captions in the photos in The Organizer? I have the Flash Rename software which I can probably use to place the text of the file names in the Details of the Properties of the photo files.
    Please help,

    There is no similar feature in imOvie that I know of.

  • Pdf portfolio source file name and date in file details

    Is it possible to import the source file name and extension as well as the source file created date in the portfolio file details?  Need to document source to portfolio in working with 3rd parties that will only have the original source.  Need to document what was converted into pdf as not all files in a directory will successfully convert to pdf.  Sometimes need to convert 100's of files.  Manual entry is inefficient.  the file names and modified dates are displayed on the Combine Files dialog.  is there a way to capture the detail on that page?

    I don't need the detail of when the pdf was added to the portfolio.  I
    need know which dwg or jpg or word file was converted and the original
    created date of that file for control of information.
    That is impossible; sorry. For some *very specific* types of conversion to PDF the pdfx:SourceModified XMP tag will be set to show the last-modification date of the source file (for example DOCX files converted using MS Word), but there will never be a human-readable record of the source filename or its creation date unless you have manually added them as document XMP properties after conversion (this is what the "Custom Properties" dialog is for). To embed source data automatically would raise no end of privacy and security problems for customers, who most certainly do NOT want their recipients seeing details of internal documents.
    Without writing a plugin there's no access to the internal workflow of the Combine Files dialog, so you cannot use a script to read the names and dates of the files *before* conversion and store them automatically in the new PDF Portfolio's Fields array.
