Aperture slide show - very sluggish start

I have the most powerful Mac ever   (MBP Retina 2,6 GHz) and to start a slide show looks not very impressive - that dreadful rainbow circle for 10-15 seconds every time and then waiting for another 10-15 sec. (+ two aperture crashes during one day). All fresh installations. It does not look very great .. Still something to be improved from the Apple part ?

How large is your slide show? A moderately sized slideshow on my MBP starts immediately, unless I use the "Places" theme and Aperture needs to connect to the internet to download maps. What theme are you using for your slideshow and how many images are in the slideshow?
Do the images in the slideshow have high quality previews?
two aperture crashes during one day)
Have you done any trouble shooting after the crashes? The reason for the crashes may be the same, that is causing the slide shows to start up so slowly.

I made a 46.5 min aperture slide show and tried a number of times to Export it so I can burn it to DVD to be viewed on an HDTV, so far with no success!  I set computer sleep to 3hrs and let it export over night and the furthest i've gotten is 66% Exported! Why is it taken so long and seem to stop but the activity status goes up ever so slowley???? Im using an iMac  7,1   2.4 GHz with 6GB of memory running 10.8.2 what am I doing wrong???

Rendering will take a very long time  - I once needed 6 hours for a shorter high definition movie with plenty of effects.
What theme are you using and what settings?
The "places" theme needs a good network connection.
And the finished movie will need plenty of disk space.
And the finished movie will need plenty of disk space. Have you checked the available  space on your disk?
What exactly happens when Aperture fails to render the movie? Are there any diagnostics, error messages in the console window, that relate to Aperture? Does Aperture alway stop at the same image or video clip?
if all fails, you could render your slideshow in two parts and combine the two videos on your DVD.

  • Question about Aperture slide shows

Question about Aperture slide shows. How can I eliminate banding in a blue sky when photos are displayed in Aperture Slide shows?

What kind of banding? Do you have a screenshot?
It could be jpg compression related, I think the previews are all jpgs.

  • In the middle of my Aperture slide show the color set on the custom text has locked to an old color I was using and will not go to a new color (white)

In the middle of creating my second Aperture slide show I find I cannot change the color of the text (even though I select it in selected slides & default slides and in various colors choices) to a new one. The first color that I was using keeps appearing. Where is the solution please ?

I personally like to Crop, and then use PNG for my screen-caps. If I need more images, say to show other Palettes, etc., then I do one each for those shots.
We see a lot of full-screen caps posted, where aggressive JPEG is used, and nothing can be read. That is especially true with images, like Adobe Encore's Flow-chart, where there is a lot of text and linking being shown.
    Just my personal preferences.

  • How to arrange photos in Aperture slide shows to the beat of the  music?

Is there anyone that knows how to arrange photos to the beat of the music in Aperture slide shows? I have tried to do a search for this topic, looked at "help" and still can get things to work properly. The "beat of music" command seems to be grayed out. Is there a bug in the software? Any help would be appreciated.

I have been following this thread with great interest. I have tried to do this in Aperture as well. Jumping ahead just a bit to what might be David's next issue, once we figure out why the option is not available to him.
For me once the music has been added the " Align slide to the beat" is available. However it doesn't seem to do anything.
I have accomplished this in iMovie and Final Cut Express. In both of these programs you have to actually mark the beats for things to work. You mark the beats and the software sets the play duration to match. This is pretty easy in iMovie. I am hoping for a similar or better interface in Aperture 3. How is this accomplished in Aperture?

  • How do I edit out the first 20 seconds of music in an Aperture slide show?

I don't want to use the first 20 seconds of a piece of music in a slide show.  How do I start the music 20 seconds into the song?  Thanks.

Since no one else has answered, here is my solution:
I use a free program called Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net
I export the track from iTunes, trim with Audacity and then re-import the new version back to iTunes (".trimmed)" so that it appears in Aperture music selection.
(I have no connection/investment whatsoever of any kind in the developer of Audacity!)

  • Glitches in Aperture slide show playback

I am using my MacBook Pro to present a 38 minute Aperture (3.3.2) slideshow with a projector. My slide show includes a few video clips and overall the images and video are sized at 1280x720. The show has about 40 audio clips of mostly narration but also some music. Mostly the show runs very well and I think it's great. Occasionally there are glitches in the playback. Video stops moving during a transition (1 second dissolve) or the last word in an audio clip will be cut off. This is the most important issue to fix. Some image transitions stutter a bit before continuing as usual.
The weird thing is that these problems are not consistent. They don't always happen at the same place. I am wondering if I might be taxing the limits of the system. I make sure to shut off everything not needed, such as any other applications, unneeded menubar monitoring items, etc. The show runs perfectly in the preview window or just on the MacBook Pro screen. It is just when I connect it to a projector or TV that I have problems.
If I run Activity Monitor during the show preview I can see Aperture usually running over 85%, often over 95% and it shows virtual mamory usage over 1.35 GB. I just have 4MB of RAM. Do you think not enough RAM is the issue?
Another thing I notice is that I have 2 types of video clips in the show. I have completed time-lapse videos, usually about 1.5 minutes, and these run perfectly, audio & visual. In other words these are the product of video export from a completed video project. The other video parts are short video clips from my video library, usually less than 10 seconds, some with built-in audio. These are regular QT movies. Most were 1080 HD clips converted to 1280x720 when I found the 1080p clips wouldn't play well. Is there any particular type of video clip that requires more intense work on the part of the processor in order to play well? What type would be best? Maybe a lower quality setting? I probably used a high quality setting.

I'm a bit surprised to see no responses to my question. But for anyone else who looked at the question, here's how things progressed. When I am presenting I am doing so directly within Aperture and not by playing a slideshow movie. However, I learned that Aperture makes the necessary resolution previews at the time of rendering the movie so I made a slideshow movie even though I had no use for it. After I exported a slide show movie the show seems to run better within Aperture. Less glitches, etc. I present this show twice a week at Fundy National Park during July & August so getting it running flawlessly is my goal..
The next step was increasing my RAM to 8GB and this helped another level. Now the show runs quite well. No more dropped words at the end of audio clips. Almost all of the image transitions work well. It is just when going through movie sections that playback sometimes stutters a bit.

  • Aperture Slide Shows vs iPhoto?

Is their a difference between the two slide shows...iphoto vs Aperture?

Hi there, there is actually quite a substantial difference in how slideshows are "approached" inthe two applications.
In iPhoto you can easily select images, set a transition and a music track and "save" that slideshow for later use.
In Aperture, I do not think you can save the slideshow in such a way, but when you select an album or some images to show them as a slideshow, you pick a slideshow preset. You can have as many as you like, and also chose to show for example four images at a time (as opposed to iPhoto's 1).
Why would you want to do this, some may ask - well, you can get some benefit by doing so if you have a large monitor and see a slideshow more as a prettier preview/comparison tool for image impact. Aperture let's you add music to your slideshow presets as well.
So, depending on how you look at it and what your preference is, it is either more flexible or less comfortable
    Hope this answers your question.

  • Exporting aperture slide show

Trying unsuccessfully to export a large slide show 435 scanned slides to an external drive at approx 50% I get error message Unable to export Slideshow " A volume could not be found"
    Any suggestions

When you exported your slide show what option did you select, when you view it on your computer what app are you using to view the slide show.  Try importing it into iTunes if you have not done that then try to watch it via Apple TV, Or you can make a DVD or the show in iDVD.

  • How to get the best iPhoto/Aperture slide shows on Apple TV

Hi. I'd like to do very simple slideshows on Apple TV 2nd generation for friends and family, but haven't been able to get it to work very well. My needs, I think, are simple:
No gimimick transitions, e.g. no Ken Burns. I don't mind an ultra-brief fade in/out, but that's about it. I found Classic, and that seems to work. I'm only mentioning it as it might have a bearing on the next two.
I'd like complete control over advancing slides using the Apple Remote, or the Remote app on the iPad. No auto-advancing. If we're all enjoying, talking about a memory, the last thing I want is that memory suddenly yanked away to the next slide. When I try to pause, it pauses the music instead of the slides.
I'd like the photos to have 720p resolution, which is what the Apple TV 2nd generation is capable of. All the originals are higher resolution (typically 3000 vertical, varying widths depending no how I've cropped), but sometimes the Apple TV decides to make them much grainier than one would expect from 720p. Other times they look fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

No there is no way to Mirror full screen from an iOS device to the Apple TV. iOS devices are not 16:9 like your HDTV so the mirrored image appears as the size your iOS device would be if it were the size of your TV. Hope that makes sense.

  • How can an Aperture slide show be burned to a DVD?

I see Aperture can be exported to Facebook and Twitter or MobleMe for use by other "freinds" on their computers.  How can a Aperture produced Slideshow be provided to those that only can see the show on a tv set with a DVD player?  I want to use the editing feathers in Aperture and not be limited  to those available in the IDVD application.
    Message was edited by: vaunfromsyracuse

You can't do that with Aperture.
What you can do is export your Slideshow as a Quicktime movie. You need a special application to create a DVD that can play in a DVD player. If you don't want to use iDVD use Toast or another such app.

  • How to sync aperture slide show to dropbox

I miss mobile me...trying to use drop box...how do you upload aperture albums or slideshows to drop box... I have been trying for 45 minutes..
    thanks
    sailmom

.. I have been trying for 45 minutes..
What exactly have you been trying? What does not work?
You cannot sync your Aperture Library to DropBox. However, you can export your Aperture albums or the images in a SlideShow album to a subfolder of the "Pictures" folder in your DropBox folder.
This will not sync with Aperture, but write the complete album again, each time you export it.
To be able to export to DropBox, add your DropBox Folder to the "Favorites" section of the Finder's sidebar, so you can select it in the File Chooser dialog, when you export from Aperture.

  • How to export Aperture slide shows to dvd player

I'm finding plenty of iPhoto suggestions but nothing specific to Aperture.  When I export a slideshow using classic and its defaults the exported result is a .MOV file.  It won't play in the DVD.  I have not idea what kind of player will end up being the one of choice for the person I doing this for but I need a format that is universal,...if there is such a thing....AVI maybe?  Anyway I tried changing the default to Mpeg4 and the end product was still a .MOV.  The file Info says the codec is mpeg4 but since the extention is still .MOV I'm guessing it still won't play.
    Sure could use some help,
    Steve

After you export from Aperture you need to add the movie to an iDVD project. iDVD is required to create a disk in the specific format that your DVD player requires.

  • Aperture slide show music

I have added music to a slideshow and now would like to change the music. How do I remove the first music from the slideshow.

I got it Highlight and press delete.

  • Aperture Exported Slide Show Does not show last few photos

I exported an Aperture Slide show for an AppleTV (720P).  The slide show has over 2000 photos from a recent trip.  The slide show is about 115 minutes long.
Everything works fine until about the last few minutes, the music works fine but the screen goes black for about 7 photos, comes back on for 2-3 then goes black for the last 5 or so photos.  Does anyone have any idea why the end of the exported slide show is doing this?  If I watch the preview on my MAC everything looks fine all the way to the end.

In my case it was because my hard drive was nearly full.  I emptied the trash (had not done this in quite sometime) and it freed up a lot of disk space.  The full slide show compiled fine after this.  I found this when another recompile warned me that there was not enough disk space to compile.  Hopes this helps.
