Aperture Slideshow Slide timing problem

We are having a problem with Aperture on an iMac. We have several preset slide shows that we use frequently in our office, and just recently, the slide show began to have a weird bug. When the slide show is stopped manually with the space bar, then started again with the space bar, it will play about 6 slides at a much faster rate than our settings. Then it goes back to normal. If we try to compensate for that by going back a few slides, then Aperture plays up to 25 slides at a faster speed, then goes back to the time we put in the preset. This occurs in multiple projects.
We are playing the slides with music, showing the photos for a fixed time, not looping the slides how, crossfade is checked. It does this with a project of 100 images or with a short slide show of 12 images. We have restarted Aperture and the Mac. We are using the latest version of Aperture. I tried making a new preset and it still happened.
This is a really embarrassing problem to have when presenting to our clients. Any ideas? I am seriously considering re-installing the program. Is there a way to repair" the installation so that we don't have to reinstall?
We are running an iMac with OS 10.4.11, 2.33Ghz, 2MB Ram.
Thanks,
Carol E.

Update...
I had tried copying my Aperture library directly to my iMac, as stated above, which did not work. Then, I copied the library to another LaCie HD that I got from Mac Mall, and that worked fine. It turns out that both of these are formatted for the MacOS, but they aren't journaled, so FAT32 is not the problem (journaling maybe or some other issue, but not FAT32).
So last night, I went to the Apple Store with my iMac and two external hard drives in tow.
So I'm in the Apple store with the a Creative guy, who is a very experienced Aperture user and photographer. We operate my iMac attached to my "Aperture Library external drive". The slide show misbehaves as expected. It does the same with the small temporary library I had made, too, on the iMac. So we hook that same HD to one of the STORE Mac Book Pro computers.... and LO and BEHOLD.... *+that computer also had the same issue as mine+*
I said "HA! I broke your computer!" So he reboots the store's Mac Book Pro, which has Deep Freeze on it, and it goes back to the same state it was in before we were using it. He runs a slide show again, same problem with the timing after pausing a slide show.
The conclusion is: The problem with the slide show is an update to Aperture and/or the video card for the iMac and Mac Book Pro, because those two computers use the same video card. Or perhaps some other OS update that affects both of those computers and whatever hardware they have in common. The guy helping me suspects the video card or something related. I went and tried the Mac Pro in the store, and it does not have this issue (same as my Mac Pro at the office). However the Mac Pro did exhibit some strange slide show behavior, as a horizontal (refresh rate problem?) line that travels up the screen during the slide show.
I couldn't say if all the newer iMacs or Mac Book Pro's in the store have this problem. He used one of the laptops that they have at the creative bar for doing classes to test things. But it is possible if you go to an Apple store and use Aperture on their iMac or Mac Book Pro computers, you will see the same thing (pause the slide show and it screws up the timing).
As to the file problem... I don't think there is a problem with the files anymore, since it copied just fine to another external hard drive. I think the problem is with the iMac. I can access the library and I can vault it to another external, and I can copy the library to another external using finder. I just can't get it back on the iMac. I may fiddle with moving the files around some more and see what happens, but I may just have to live with the fact that the library won't move back to the iMac internal drive. We plan to get another Mac Pro in a few months, so perhaps this won't even matter.
Anyway thanks for the help on this issue. Hopefully Apple is listening, or at least listening to an Aperture user that has also found this problem. I will probably post on some more forums, and maybe someone with some influence will check out the problem.

  • Import Aperture slideshow into iPad as SLIDES

I prepared a slideshow using Aperture, individually introducing texts and modifying slide layout. 550 slides, this was a lot of work.
    Then I bought an iPad.
From what I found until now, the only solution is Aperture > iPhoto > (movie) > iPad
I don't care for a movie, I want to keep my slideshow, its quality and the ability to browse my own speed.
Using the album I prepared before is not the solution, as I loose the additional information for each slide.
    QUESTION 1
CAN I INDIVIDUALLY EXPORT PICTURES AND ADDITIONAL LAYOUT PREPARED FOR AN APERTURE SLIDESHOW AS JPEG FILES ?
I moved to Photoshop to redo the editing job, then import into Aperture.
Too bad, the order of pictures is lost when exporting to iPad.
And I did not find any solution for modifying orders of pictures on iPad.
iPhoto for iPad says it would do it (drag and drop), but I did not find how yet...
Should I individually drag pictures into an Album on iPad ?
    QUESTION 2
HOW TO MODIFY ORDERS OF PICTURES IN AN IPAD ALBUM ?
There should be solutions for both. Hopefully a simple one that I did not find yet.
    Can anyone help ?

    Hi Constance,
You would first need to export the slideshow from iPhoto as a Quicktime movie.
Then you can view it on your iPad.
    Here's how:
    iPhoto '11: Export a slideshow

iPhoto '11: View photos or slideshows on iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV

    Hope this information helps ...

  • Another Aperture slideshow and iDVD question

When ultimately making a DVD, why do some people export their Aperture slideshow to iMovie and then iDVD, while others export the slideshow to the desktop and then import directly to iDVD (skipping iMovie)?  I suppose another question is: is there somewhere an idiot's guide to all the various output and resolution options?  I'm reading that if you export at too high a resolution, iDVD will jack that back down and then you get "artifacts."  Are there optimal export resolutions for, say, Standard TVs and HDTVs when exporting from Aperture to iDVD?  Thank you!!

    MarkPek,
To add to what leonieDF has said.
I don't use Aperture for slide shows very often, but I make hundres of DVD's with iDVD and Toast.
All DVD's are standard definition, unless you use aa application like Toast and create a AVCHD Bluray disk.  It doesn't mater what type of TV you play it on, it's SD.  Some TV's do a good job of upscaling and the SD looks very good on them.
If you were to send a folder of full resolution 20 MP ( or whatever your camera is) images to iDVD there may be problems.  I don't think iDVD is a very good at rescaling images.  Sending 1920 x 1080 images or movies to iDVD has worked very well for me.  I expect 720p would do well also.
I would recomend you do a test of a slide show of 1 min or less and trry a few different settings.  I would try to export with a preset of Apple TV,iPad for a starter.  Note that using Apple TV iPad 720p will give you a frame rate of 24, where as the other Apple TV is 30 fps.  I have never tried feeding iDVD a movie that was 24fps,  I not sure how that would go.  I may give that a try and see what happens.
I use FCPX not iMovie, but I think that iMove works the same way.  In the moive editing software you can just drag your Aperture stills into the timeline from the photo browser to creat your slide show/movie.  But realize that the movie editing sofatware will actually use your Aperture previews for this.  So your preview preference will determine the resolution of the images going into your movie.  If your previews are set real low the results may not be very good.  A setting that is closer to your monitor resoulton would work very well.
Do a test and let us know hoiw you make out.  If I get a chance tomorrow I'll drop a quick slide show into iDVD.  I'll export the same slide show with a few differnt settings and then put them all on one DVD to play back.

  • Can I make an aperture slideshow and use it in iweb?

I need to know if I can make an aperture slideshow and use it in iweb (not making it a quicktime movie)? I don't want to use I photo (I know how to make one in Iphoto and put it in Iweb and I dont want to do this). (dont want a .mac gallery either) Please help. thank you!!!

Aperture slide shows are just for review. They can not be output. TBMK
Honestly, you've exhausted most of what iLife can do, and quicktime will probably be your output even if you go to Keynote to make your slide show.
But with Keynote you'll have more control over how the Quicktime is compressed.
Otherwise, you're looking at the expense AND the learning curve of Flash.
Maybe someone else will chime in with a 3rd party solution.

  • Show captions in Aperture Slideshow

I am creating a movie consisting of a few Aperture slideshow segments, and other clips. I want to show captions on some of the slides of Aperture; how do I do that? I see how to add them into the metadata, but what is it that makes them viewable as the slide shows?

It will depend on the slideshow theme, if you can show the captions as an overlay. If it is available, you can enable "Text" in the "Selected Slide" setting for individual slides or "default Settings" for all slides. For example in the "Classic Theme":
The same will work for the Ken Burns Theme, but not for the other more elaborate themes.

  • Aperture slideshow export to Pal

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows of a way I can export aperture slideshows to PAL to import in dvd studio pro for a dvd in the UK?
I have tried converting the videos with ffmgegx but the quality is not great?
Any ways around this would be very helpful, thanks

Aperture only produces a digital file of your slide show PAL refers to the encoding used when making a video disk.
Whether the video disk is encoded PAL or NTSC is determined by the software you are using to create the video disk.

  • Lost All Aperture Slideshow Themes

I lost all my Aperture slideshow themes after upgrading to iLife '11. At first everything worked fine and I was able to access the existing and new slideshow themes in Aperture from the new iPhoto '11 upgrade (as advertised). Then it all broke. Now I have no slideshow themes (or functionality) in either Aperture or in iPhoto for that matter. I'm not sure the exact moment that this all happened but just noticed it when trying to edit a few existing slideshows. The structure and music is all there but the slideshows are blank because there are no themes at all, just blank. I repaired permissions and checked file structures, did routine maintenance. Nothing works. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    Success!
I'm documenting this in case anyone else encounters the same problem. There are three files that can be found in HD>Library>Application Support. These files are: iLife, iLifeMediaBrowser, and iLifeSlideshow. They somehow got corrupted in the upgrade process to Aperture 3.1 and/or iLife '11. The thing is that trashing the corrupted files in hopes that a clean reinstall will rebuild them does NOT WORK. It simply makes shared media unavailable to any of the apps. I had to restore the files from Time Machine from a previous state.
This took an entire day of troubleshooting to figure out. I hope this helps avoid this for anyone else.

How can I create a slideshow that depicts only a version of a photo rather than the original?   Since the original and new versions are saved together, the aperture slideshow often choices the original rather than the desired version to display.

There are two things we use the name "Slideshow" for in Aperture:  a Slideshow Album, used for making Slideshows, and the Slideshow that is made.  (Imho, it is a design mistake to not call the containers used to create Slideshows, Books, etc., "Albums".)
The Slideshow will use the Album Pick from any Stack.  A good way to use Aperture is to promote the Image you want to regularly use (such as, for example, a Version with adjustments) to the top of the Stack.  This makes it the Stack Pick, and will be the default Album Pick.  If you haven't done that, you can still change the Album Pick for any Stack in a Slideshow Album.  Expand your Stack(s), select the Image in each Stack that you want to be the Album Pick (and thus shown in the Slideshow), and "Stacks➞Set Album Pick".  (Note the keyboard shortcut; there is also a Toolbar icon for this.)  The change is immediate.  The Slideshow will always show the Album Pick (or, if there is not one, the Stack Pick) for every Stack in your Slideshow Album.

  • Aperture slideshows to mobileme gallery

I have tried endlessly to export a good quality aperture slideshow to my mobileme gallery but it seems this can only be done as an album of pictures or as a movie through imovie.
Does anyone know another procedure whereby I can upload them as I originally create them with music, theme, transitions, etc?

I create 'high quality previews' in aperture first.
From there I create a 'high quality master file'...
    Export from aperture...
    Using a 'custom' preset
    H.264
    24fps
    at 1920x1080
I label this file my 'master' for play back on computer & smaller versions for other devises.
    From here in QT7:
    File-export-'Movie to Quick Time Movie'
    Options-     Compression: H.264
                      Quality: High
                       Frame Rate: 24fps
                       Encoding Mode:  Multipass
                      Dimensions: 640x840
                       Scale:  Letterbox
                       Sound:  AAC
Not sure whether to go from ITunes to Mobileme from here or if there is a way to go from iTunes to Mobileme via iMovie
    from here...
I've just tried so many ways that I am disappointed with the results every time.
I did create one movie in mobileme with great quality but didn't write down how I did it and now I can't repeat it...
I am also very disappointed with not being able to produce good quality movies on a DVD...
Any advice on this matter is greatly appreciated...I realize my I.T. understanding is somewhat limited but I do know what it is I want to produce in the end after having taken great images...

  • Slideshow crop photos problem when i close the thumbnail botton

In the slideshow i use thumbnail photo "turned on" to change the pictures (is it the only way to do it?)  and manage them with crop function but when i later close thumbnail (i don't want visible) photos resize. Any suggestion ?

I have not a link yet, i'm preparing the graphic layout at the time. I bypassed the problem importing in muse the right photos size without use crop. Maybe i should see better edit photo functions tutorials. I'm new with Muse.

  • Set default slide timing to .5 second

Can anyone tell me how to set the default slide timing to 1
second or less? No matter what options I choose, slide timing is
always determined by how long it takes me to click on the next
target. Ideally, I'd like to set the slide timing to be very short,
then have the timing of the objects I add determined slide length.
    Thanks for your help,
    Julie

Hi Julie and happy HannuChristmaKwanzaYule to you!
There is only one place I'm aware of that any slide timing
default may be set. In Captivate 2, you look at Project >
    Preferences... > Defaults tab.
In Captivate 3, you look at Edit > Preferences... >
    Project node.
In both places you will find a place to configure the default
slide time. This has no effect on any existing slides and I don't
believe it will factor into the mix when recording. Also it would
appear the minimum limit is one second. The only places this seems
to take effect are when inserting Blank slides and when creating a
    Blank project.
Hopefully this helps a smidge! Rick

  • Can anyone help me with Labview/GPIB timing problems?

I am trying to use a very simple VI (downloaded from the NI site) to control a Newport 1830C optical power meter.
I have been spending most of my time trying to use the VI issue a command to read the current displayed power. When I run the VI normally, I get no response from the meter, and the VI simply terminates without any error message. (The "remote" indicator does light on the meter, though, so it seems to be receieving the command.)
However, when I run the VI in the "highlight exectution" mode, everything seems to work just fine, and I receive a correct reading from the meter! Needles to say, this makes it really hard to debug the problem.
My guess is that I have some kind of timing problem, and t
he "highlight execution" feature fixes it by introducing delays. Is this correct? If so, how can I achieve the same thing by putting in delays by hand?
    thanks, Whitney White

    Whitney,
I agree that this is very likely to be a timing issue. VIs run much slower in highlight execution mode, therefore your instrument may need more time to prepare the data you have requested. Try wiring a delay inline prior to the GPIB reads and/or writes, or try using Service Requests (SRQs) to give the instrument enough time to generate the data it needs to send back to the computer.
Another possibility is that your instrument may not be IEEE 488 compliant. Some older instruments indicate that they are ready to receive data before they really are. Try changing the GPIB bus timing to the slowest setting (in the GPIB Configuration Utility). This only affects the time that the GPIB controller waits before valid data is on the bus and the DAV line i
s asserted (a step in the GPIB handshaking that occurs each time a byte of information is sent to the device) so this may not be effective.
Lastly, you may wish to try the instrument driver for your instrument. There is a contributed driver at this location: LabVIEW Traditional Instrument Driver: Newport Optical Power Meter 1830C. A 'contributed driver' means that someone outside of National Instruments wrote the driver and then submitted it for posting. This driver also contains a good example of adding a time out.

Do you have any suggestion for making my flat screen color match my monitor better? I calibrate my monitor using Color Eyes Display Pro, so I am aware that I may never have an exact match, but it would be great to be closer.
    Also, what is 'handbrake'?
    Thanks again!
Handbrake is a video conversion application. It transcodes DVDs, BluRay video or any simple video file such as those output by Lightroom into almost anything you want, but focused on files that iPhones and AppleTV understands. It's online here: http://handbrake.fr/ . I use it on all my video to lower the filesize significantly. I don't do a lot of video, but sometimes do "behind the scenes" stuff simply in iMovie, but the files that output are crazy large and can be really lowered in size simply by running them through handbrake.
Regarding the color matching, this can generally be done by calibrating the settings on your HDTV using something like a calibration disk. Generally these TVs (even if they are big name brands) come really badly calibrated out of the box to oversaturate color and give way too much contrast and far too high black levels as that is what consumers tend to like. They are also generally set up to sharpen the images, which you really do not want as it changes contrast (it impacts gamma) and such so turn off all sharpening and all dynamic contrast modes in the TVs menus. If you have kids, the Disney BluRay disks include a calibration tool that works really well. I have used the one on our Toy Story 3 BluRay disk to calibrate the living room HDTV. Afterwards I get really good matching results from it when streamed to from the AppleTV.
