Aperture+Slow Generation Of Previews

Hello All,
I'm wondering if anyone can offer any suggestions regarding Very slow preview rendering ? I have a DP G5 with 1.5 G Ram.
I imported 1100 Jegs from my Canon Mark II, I have the preview size set to fit between 1920 * 1929 pixels and a quality of 5, it seems to take about 30 minutes to generate all the previews, - is this normal ?, I relise 1100 odd pics is a large number, but is it usally this slow ??
Thanks

Preview can really slow things down in Aperture. You might consider leaving them off and then generating them only for the images that you need previews for slideshows, iLife integration, or drag-and-drop. This is what I do, and it seems many others do the same from what I have read on this forum.
There is good info about Previews here:

Or search these discussions as this has been discussed quite a bit.

  • Generation of previews is still a very significant problem

An old problem surfaced again yesterday, after several years of stability.
I decided to upgrade my previews in preparation for a move to a new iPad.  My reading says that, with the retina screen, the new iPad is capable of handling larger image files and showing much more detail than previous machines.
I have had much of my Aperture Library on my iPhone for well over a year and I liked this functionality.
So I set my preference for Preview quality higher and selected all my photos (around 22000) and started an "Update Previews".  Three or four times, the process crashed and I restarted it.  Then there was a crash that could not be handled.  Each time I rebooted Aperture, it crashed before I could do anything about it.
So I did all three recovery procedures.  Holding down Command-Option on reboot, I repaired permissions, repaired the database and then rebuilt the database.  This let me reboot successfully, but once the Update Preview recommenced automatically, Aperture crashed again.
My reading says that there was a corrupted file somewhere.  But there's no way to find it without trying Update Preview on one or two or a few image files at a time—a process which could take days or weeks with a big library.
So I wiped my disk clean and copied over one of my back-up libraries and gave up on the Update Preview.  Presumably, my back-up library has the corrupt file in it and I wasn't about to lose all Aperture functionality again.  Fortunately, I maintain a number of Vaults and other Library back-ups (created outside Aperture), so I can recover when my default Library gets into a state like yesterday.
The bottom line is this—there appears to be no way to easily root out a single corrupted file.  When you try to generate a Preview of a corrupted image file, Aperture will crash, and sometimes this is fatal and you have to simply replace the library you are using.  So there's a crying need for an effective method of finding and correcting a single corrupted file, AND/OR the software should report a corrupted file, but carry on with the generation of previews for the thousands of good files.
I've decided to avoid this problem in the future by changing my work method.  I can do without the previews.  I've turned off the Maintain Previews for this Project, for all my projects.  I will select a few of my best images and will create high-end previews of them for my iPad and that will satisfy my needs.

My reading says that there was a corrupted file somewhere.  But there's no way to find it without trying Update Preview on one or two or a few image files at a time—a process which could take days or weeks with a big library.
Yes, that procedure would be terribly slow on a large library: But you could search more efficiently by a "divide and conquer" method:
    Back up your library.
Divide the set of images in your library in two albums of equal size; album A1 and A2.
Try to build the Previews for all images in Album A1 at once.
If that succeeds, you know that does A1 not contain the corrupted image - you'll have to search A2 next.
But if it crashes again, the corrupted image is in A1 and not A2.
Depending on the first result now build two albums B1 and B2 from the images in either A1 or A2 (depending on the result of step 1).
Then divide again, and again, and again, until the album is so small that you can spot the broken image.
Using this subdivision strategy you could scan 100000 images in only 16 steps
So there's a crying need for an effective method of finding and correcting a single corrupted file, AND/OR the software should report a corrupted file, but carry on with the generation of previews for the thousands of good files.
d’accord!    Have you sent feedback to Apple? http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html

  • How do I stop the auto generation of previews to imported files?

In a recent post it was suggested that I do not let Aperture automatically generate the previews to all imported files. I think that is a great idea, but how do I stop the auto generation of such files?
Under Preferences/Previews I have unchecked the New projects automatically generate previews, but after I do the import the processing wheel continues to spin for quite some time (depending on how many files I imported).
    Thanks in advance.

  • Everytime I open Aperture it starts rebuilding previews and thumbnails. Any idea why?

    Help please?

Closing and reopening Aperture after it completed its job just started rebuilding previews & thumbnails again and again
If all previews have been generated, and you still see frequent processing of previews, there may be two reasons:
Your Preferences settings do not take, because the preferences file in the user library is corrupted.
You may have imported a corrupted image file or video, for that the generation of previews will never succeed.
The first can be fixed by removing the Aperture preferences apple.com.Aperture.plist from your user library, see the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics on how to do this.
The second requires to search your last import, and to try to generate previews manually for subsets of these images, to find the one, for which the generation of previews will hang.

  • Aperture slows down on edited files

Hi folks, i run Aperture 2.1.2 on a 13" MacBook 2,4 GHz with 4 GB of RAM.
I noticed a loss of performance on both referenced and managed files as they get edited, especially when added of sharpen and enhance adjustments: the more adjustments they get the more Aperture slows down, especially annoying is scrolling through a 100% zoomed photo, with the movement delayed by 2/3 seconds...
There's actually a difference between referenced and managed files, as managed ones respond a bit better, but still not as an original one.
P.S. all masters are on the internal drive.
    Thanks for any suggestion...

cwog is correct about the overhead for displaying edited master images, but I disagree with his suggestion to export to view images. I suggest you use "Quick Preview" to display photos with minimal delay (use "P" as shortcut to turn on and off). You need to make sure you generate a preview automatically and set the size and quality under "Preferences --> Preview." Previews do not require the calculations for display as does the edited master image. Display time is much quicker.

  • Is my live site going to be as slow as the preview?

How accurately does the preview function represent reality once a site is published? Is my live site going to be as slow-loading as it is in preview? (Images are optimized, and the pages giving me problems don't even have a lot of images.) I am also having trouble with my FAQ page - the anchors are not pointing where they should be (I have rechecked in the design page, and they are place correctly.) I am doing a total redesign of my existing website, so I don't want to publish until the entire site is ready to go (at least the most important pages)...but I'm freaking out, because if the live site is going to load as slow as the preview, we're going to have a problem.  SO....to those who have already published your sites - Am I worried for nothing, or is this a real concern?

The other reason Preview in Muse will be slower is that Muse has to both generate and view the page. Muse doesn't generate the pages until you navigate to them in Muse Preview. A lot of the time is spent in the generation of each page. When your site is exported or published the generation occurs at export/publish time. When viewed in the browser the pages only need to be downloaded and viewed by the browser. That said, if a page has a large number of images that equates to a lot of data for the browser to download.
Temporary sites on Adobe Business Catalyst are free with no strings attached. Click Publish. Type in a name for your temporary site and click OK. In few moments (or minutes depending on the size and complexity of your site) you'll have a free temporary site on Business Catalyst to test with.

  • Aperture 3: low quality preview images

I don’t know if it's just a problem with my (new) Aperture Trial library or if it's a Aperture 3 bug:
The preview images Aperture 3 (trial) creates from raw files (in my case NEFs) are different from the JPEGs exported using the same JPEG settings.
I get the impression that the preview images don’t use all the adjustments applied to the raw files. They don’t have the moire reduction applied. The preview images of high ISO images have color noise, the exported images don’t have that color noise (the moire and noise settings of raw fine tuning are applied to the exported files but not to the image previews).
As the preview images are used for the Finder media browser, iLife, iPhone/iPod touch picture sync and other things the lower quality is not acceptable for me.
The preview images of Aperture 2 are identical to the exported JPEGs from Aperture 2 (using the same settings).
I use Aperture 3 Trial with a new trial library and a few hundred raw images just to test Aperture 3.
I already erased all preview images and rebuild the previews. I deselected using the embedded JPEGs from the raw files and I let Aperture rebuild the miniatures.

It seems that Ap2 syncs the previews to the iPhone... you have to clear the previous cached previews before it will load higher quality previews... anyhow, here is what I did... and photos look better on my iphone (not feeling motivated enough to verify if it is the same quality as iphoto sync)...
1.) change Ap2 prefs for "limit preview size" to "don't limit"...
2.) select all the photos in the album(s) you are want to sync, right click (ctrl click), and select delete previews...
    3.) sync your iphone again...
if that doesn't work directly, you might need to uncheck sync photos to delete all photos on the iphone, but the ultimate goal is to ensure refresh with the higher quality previews...
Hope that makes sense or gets folks in the right direction... Apple really needs to put a check box in future version of itunes to sync full quality or something...

  • Aperture thumbnail generation forever

    Hello
I like to have all my pictures in one place to share them with apple tv, so I decided to give aperture a try.
I imported all images (about 36000 from 12 years) into one aperture library.
Before importing I switched off face detection and preview generation.
After finishing I had a 236 GB library, but aperture starts to generate some thumbnails.
Problem is, it freezes on generating them.
I used the activity window to hunt down what is happeing and found out that it stops when it comes to a specific picture.
    So I managed to
    1) start aperture
    2) open activity window
    3) stop the thumbnail generation when it starts
    4) delete the picture where the aperture have problems
This way I managed to get from about 5700 thumbanisl to do to a number of 3500 thumbnails to do, but aperture keeps freezing at a single pic (the bad one)
But now, aperture starts thumbnail generation so quickly that I cannot open activity window and stop the progress before it reaches the bad one.
@Apple: could we have an option like "safe start" that won't schedule any processes for thumbnails before the user wants it?
So, any ideas out there? I tried everything I found like repairing, rebuilding, no help.
Is there any kind of log to look into? I am a newbie in mac os and aperture.
    Regards
    Klaus

This "bad" one is a video, some of the former bad ones were videos too, so does aperture have a problem in general with video files? Maybe its a good idea to just import all pictures and do the videos in a separate step afterwrds? Otherwise with 36000 pics (and about 300 videos between them) this is tedious...
    Klaus,
Aperture may have a problem with videos, if you have a problematic video codec installed, if the video is corrupted, or incompatible with Aperture. What kind of videos did you import?
If you can, delete the whole project, so that you do not need to select the video and reimport only the image files.
Check, if you have the 3ivxVideoCodec installed - if yes, remove it,
see: Aperture 3: May be unresponsive or have slower performance with third-party video codec
This codec could have been installed for example by FlipForMac.
If you do not want to delete all of your last import, you could try to delete the bad video directly from the Aperture library package:
Quit Aperture. Ctrl-click the Aperture library and select "Show Package Content" from the pop-up menu. Open the "masters" folder and navigate to the Year-Month-day of your last import. If you can find the video there, remove it, but don't change anything else. Afterwards the video should show as missing. Delete the version from the library. The dates in the Library package are based on "Import session", not capture dates.
Before manipulating the Library, make sure you have a current backup.

  • Aperture slow sync to apple tv 2 ( I mean hours)

    Hi....
I have a large photo library within aperture 3.1.2, and I have an apple TV 2 that I use for casual browsing of the library.
The issue that I have is that when I add new photos to aperture, it can take a day or more until they show up in apple tvs photos.
Its almost as if apple tv is looking at an older version of my aperture library.
I have done a software update in the mac that serves apple tv, and also, ensured that apple tv is up to date. I've tried closing itunes, aperture, logged off, log on, rebooted apple tv 2 (by unplagging)- to no avail, restarted itunes, aperture, apple tv etc etc.
I just dont seem to be able to say to apple tv 2 the equivalent of "hey, go an refresh your view of aperture, there are new photos in there "
This is really frustrating, because the photos that i want to look at the most, are typically those that I have just taken.
Its really weird. As an other example, if i make a new smart album in aperture say "photos from last couple of days", with the obvious smart album selection criteria, then this too does not appear in apple tv 2 until a few hours later.
This smart album works as expected in aperture- no problems.
They will turn up later, but apparently with no rhyme or reason as to the timing.
I think its down to apple TV storing an older version of metadata for the aperture library.
I could understand it if I had no photos at all coming across, or if only photos with previews that come across, but no, it doesnt appear to be any setting such as that, becuase they will come over, eventually.
This appears to be a big bug- New photos cant be shown on apple TV for a day or two - grrrrrr.
Im pulling my hair out with it.
    Any help really appreciated

Before photos can be shared to the ATV2, the images must be optimized, and some info stored in a file in the package of the particular Aperture Library you last used (if you have more than one) named iPod Photo Cache (don't worry about the name). This takes time apparently, and I often see some elapsed time before seeing on the ATV2. Since the device has no memory to hold the image content, this is not really syncing in the same sense as with an iPad or first generation ATV.
However, I never have more than a few albums selected to Share, as my primary Aperture is very large, and impractical to peruse on the ATV2. Still, it can take time to update the needed file in the package.
This file, which is in the package both in each separate Aperture Library and that of the iPhoto Library. This is why only one library can be shared with the ATV2.

  • Aperture Slow vs. iPhoto...

    Hello,
I recently purchased Aperture 3.0.3 after a brief trial using 1000 photos. Once I loaded over 80,000 photos between two libraries, I find the program too sluggish to even navigate and be of any valid use (yes, I have allowed the software to complete all of it's organization, Faces, etc.). Alternatively, the same photos loaded into iPhoto 8.1.2 make navigation a snap. I have tried all the basic troubleshooting that I know of and even gone to the extreme of reinstalling Mac OS 10.6.4 and Directory maintenance via DiskWarrior with only marginal help in speed. There is at least 100GB of free hard drive space and 1.5GB of free RAM available for use at the height of any use (on my MacBook Pro 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo).
Does anyone have any suggestion to make Aperture function as well as advertised? I will bump up the RAM if needed, but I have twice what the minimum requirements suggest.
“Technological change is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.” (Albert Einstein, 1941),
    Dr. Z.

1.5GB of free memory is not enough to run Aperture with much speed. Don't have too many images in any one project, i like around 1,000. 5k and you are pushing your luck. It will be slow if you try to work with the whole library rater than projects. Ensure you use Quick Preview to look through images and setting previews to a small size and modest quality should help the RAM. Allan

  • Aperture slowed computer down when importing large library

Hi, I recently imported 47,000 photo's into Aperture 2 from Iphoto. The entire process took several hours but when it was importing, my computer slowed down to a crawl. My browser took a while to open, Iphoto was slow to open and just about any program took much longer to load. Any task took much longer. I kept seeing the spinning ball when using Aperture. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be concerned? Any info is greatly appreciated

Not at all. Aperture's just using all the computer's resources as importing 47,000 photos is a very processor intensive job. Once it's done, all should be back to normal.
If it's still running slow after they've all been imported and all the thumbnails/previews have been made, then that's a bit odd.

  • Aperture Slow Performance

Aperture 3 is running very slow on my MacBook Pro Retina 2012...I think a big factor might be that I have roughly 20,000 photos/videos in my library, and the library is stored on my external drive as a managed one. I have a WD 2TB Firewire 800 (I use a Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to use it) external...I know that Firewire 800 is extremely slow compared to USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt. But is there any way I could boost Aperture's performance?
Every time I open up Aperture, it is "Processing". This will last easily 1-2 hours, making it barely useable. Most of the time it will give me a spinning rainbow wheel and I will have to force quit. Should I create separate libraries because mine is decently large? I really would like to keep all of my photos/videos in one location on my external, but if keeping everything on the local drive would be better, I can try that. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

What is your Aperture 3 version? Have you updated to the latest version? If not, update to Aperture 3.5.1 for the best compatibility with MAvericks.
If you have Aperture 3.5, make sure your Preview preferences are set according to this support article:  Aperture 3.5: Set "Share XML with other applications" to "Never" for better performance and faster quit times
Every time I open up Aperture, it is "Processing". This will last easily 1-2 hours, making it barely useable.
You may have imported corrupted videos or image files, that cause Aperture to continually try to create previews. Is Aperture more responsive, when you launch it with the Shift-key held down? That is a sure sign for problematic content in the library. Try, if removing your last import from the library fixes this. (see:                   How to Screen an Aperture Library for Corrupted Image Files or Videos)
Or the internal libraries in your Aperture library need repairing. Try the First Aid Tools: See:  Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

  • Aperture slow + issue with colors

I installed Lion + aperture 3.1.3 after which aperture become too slow to work with and the colors of my photos look different, as if they lost contrast!
    Does anyone noticed this behavior?
I am using a  2Ghz Core 2 Due processor with 4Gb of memory.

    Thanks rwboyer,
It doesn't happen only to the first access, but quite always.
And regarding the "offline" term, you are right: I meant to say "stored into an external Hd connected to my MBP".
I would add other details: as I stored my referenced files outside my MBP Hd, I work with preview.
All these preview sometimes are displayed in low-res despite I let Aperture creating a preview of whole library. Sometimes these preview are displayed suddenly, sometimes it takes several seconds and sometimes it doesn't happen at all.
    This makes me crazy!
I'm thinking to relocate all the master into the MBP Hd.
And now the questione is: import all the masters in the Aperture library or let the masters like referenced master inside a folder on my MBP Hd?
Which is the best way to save room on the Hd?
Thanks once again for the support

  • Slow and choppy preview in CS6

    Hello!
I'm using After Effects to edit and things to my footage. I've found that it's pretty slow and preview is quite choppy. Also, RAM usage grows as I preview more, 4fps/24fps. In the end, the RAM usage is max, approximately 10Gb. I stop my preview but the RAM usage stays up. So, my question is, is the reason why my preview is slow and choppy, Cache is too small or too slow so the program loads the pieces to RAM, then slowly writes them Cache? I'm using 2 x Samsung F3 7200rpm 1TB drives in RAID0 for cache, previews and sometimes I render small pieces of video that. I think that the RAID0 -system is slightly too slow for cache. But there's a problem. Windows shows that HDD usage for my RAID0 is 0-2%. So, is it that my processor is too weak, footage disk is too slow (5400rpm 2TB), Cache too slow, wrong settings or something else? I've been thinking to breaking the RAID0 and replacing the cache disk with SSD. Would that help? And I would use one of those F3s to my "footage disks".
I'm using GeForce 660TI with After Effects and I don't find that it gives a lot more performance. I don't see any performance differences even when I've enable AE to use my GPU. So, is there some settings wrong?
RAM preview is as fast as normal, no speed gains, and still, no real time. Sometimes, when I RAM preview the footage and then preview it, as normal, it would play it in real time with audio (if selected) but sometimes when the RAM preview is done, it won't do that. It just "loses" the preview footage and it's like RAM preview didn't do anything.
And I want to make sure: Blue bar - from Cache, Green bar - previewed footage.
    My HDD settings:
    - 2 x Samsung F3 1TB RAID0 - Media Cache, Disk Cache, some of the footage (no performance differences if the footage is in this drive or other drive), Audio Previews, Video Previews ( mostly Premiere Pro ), Rendered files
    - 1 x Samsung F3 1TB - Boot drive, no footage, no files, just After Effects in it.
    - 1 x Samsung F4EG 2TB (5400rpm) - Pictures and footage.
    My PC (excluding drives)
    - Intel i7-870 (HT on)
    - 16GB RAM 1333MHz
    - Asus GeForce 660 TI
    - Windows 7 Home Edition 64bit.
If you could help me, I would be very thankful!
    Kind Regards
    Apollo

    Well, project info:
    1920 x 1080, 24fps, HDTV 1080 24 Preset.
One clip filmed with Nikon D800 (1080p@24), 16 seconds long
Added two shapes (very thin lines), one text, one  "Solid Layer" for vignetting, and then Nul for tracker which is for the lines and text.
All the Effects are in the videoclip: Sharpen, Levels, Broadcast Colors, SA Color Finesse 3, Unsharp Mask
I've used Numpad 0 almost all the time for preview. But is the space bar preview for previewing AFTER numpad 0 RAM-preview, because the RAM preview makes the green line over the composition. But if the most of the preview is done by NumPad 0, what's the meaning of the space button -preview in the After Effects when it seems to be a wrong way to preview.
Is there any way to improve this preview? More RAM, faster CPU?

  • My 3.4.5 has ~ 35000 jpg masters.  I have set aperture not to create previews on import and have ensured "maintain previews" is not ticked.  Every time I start aperture it insists on creating previews for ~ 4300 images. Why?

Having had the previews created I selected all photos and "delete previews".  It did this quickly and no more previews being created.  Once aperture is closed and then re-opened aperture immediately sets about creating the previews for the same photos.  I don't understand why this should be happening.
This is occuring on my Mackbook Air (Aug 2012) which has 256 GB storage. I am fast running out of space as I am using "Managed Masters".  I intend to make the masters referenced by relocating them to an external HDD but before doing this would like to clear up this problem first. I keep my Vault on the external HDD and have Time Machine and Time Capsule.  When I have relocated the masters to the external HDD I intend that TM backs the external HDD to the TC.  I tink that I will use the second partition on the external HDD for Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the Mackbook Air.
Any help or advice warmly welcomed.

    Frank
    Many thanks for your input.
Following your advice I have selected all the projects individually and checked the status of Mantain Previews.  Some were indeed marked up for Mantail Preview so I have unmarked them.
I have also selected Photos and deleted  previews and also repeated this for My Projects.
Checking the Get Info for the Preview folder in Aperture Library in Finder this now tells me that I have zero bytes for 564 items.
Close and then reopen Aperture and it regenerates these564 previews in the blink of an eye.  I haven't been able to locate these photos yet.  I know there are about 120 in facebook and 10 in photostream but dont know where the rest are.
It seems the issue is not with Aperture but with myself and not understanding Aperture sufficiently well
Do you see the problem this way?
