Aperture Slow Performance
Aperture 3 is running very slow on my MacBook Pro Retina 2012...I think a big factor might be that I have roughly 20,000 photos/videos in my library, and the library is stored on my external drive as a managed one. I have a WD 2TB Firewire 800 (I use a Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to use it) external...I know that Firewire 800 is extremely slow compared to USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt. But is there any way I could boost Aperture's performance?
Every time I open up Aperture, it is "Processing". This will last easily 1-2 hours, making it barely useable. Most of the time it will give me a spinning rainbow wheel and I will have to force quit. Should I create separate libraries because mine is decently large? I really would like to keep all of my photos/videos in one location on my external, but if keeping everything on the local drive would be better, I can try that. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!
What is your Aperture 3 version? Have you updated to the latest version? If not, update to Aperture 3.5.1 for the best compatibility with MAvericks.
If you have Aperture 3.5, make sure your Preview preferences are set according to this support article: Aperture 3.5: Set "Share XML with other applications" to "Never" for better performance and faster quit times
Every time I open up Aperture, it is "Processing". This will last easily 1-2 hours, making it barely useable.
You may have imported corrupted videos or image files, that cause Aperture to continually try to create previews. Is Aperture more responsive, when you launch it with the Shift-key held down? That is a sure sign for problematic content in the library. Try, if removing your last import from the library fixes this. (see: How to Screen an Aperture Library for Corrupted Image Files or Videos)
Or the internal libraries in your Aperture library need repairing. Try the First Aid Tools: See: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

Aperture 3 Performance is Unbelievably Slow
My library is not huge (~9000 images), but Aperture 3 performance is ridiculously slow. My library resides on an external drive (a Mercury On-The-Go High Speed Portable SATA Solution unit). No other apps are open. I have 2GB RAM. I have turned off the faces feature, thinking that might help. No dice. The software is unusable at this performance level. Any ideas? Thanks.
I have been flamed (OK, toasted a bit)for suggesting that:
-- Defragging the Aperture Library is necessary at all or helpful if done,
-- Simple copy out/copy back is not enough.
But this is precisely what I have seen. OSX does an incredible job of keeping disks A) optimised and B) largely defragged. The Aperture Library appears to be a huge exception. I suspect that this may be an artifact of the "Package" concept. It is clear that in many cases a Package is intended to look like one single file. I wonder if this keeps all of the internal files from being reorganized when copied. I hasten to add that I am way over my depth here.
I can confirm that:
-- Deleting the cache and prefs files seems to fix the major speed problems.
-- The various preview, index, and related files can become fragmented into hundreds of fragments. Master image files are typically not more than four fragments. Obviously, the faster your disk, the less this is an issue, but for those of us who are running a plane Jane mini with a slow drive, a RAID 0 is not an option.
-- As noted by many, iDefrag's "Quick On-Line" mode cleans this up in mere minutes. (Fewer minutes the second time.) And, as a side benefit, it cleans up the various Private and Spotlite files that may have become fragmented. All of this WITHOUT attempting a major reordering of the disk. (Probably just as well, because, as noted repeatedly, OSX does an excellent job of optimization.
In any case, the happy coincidence of all of this and the multiple udates from Apple is that Aperture 3 absolutely roars. I still keep my stuff backed up in three copies, but crashes, hangs, etc., have never been a problem and all of the brushes and sliders are much more responsive, on 100 MB TIFF images at full resolution, than Apeture 2 ever was. -
Running Aperture and Slow Performance on MacBook Pro
I am running a MacBook pro w 4 GM interal memory, lost of HD space, and OS 10.8.4. Often when working with Aperture system performance seems very sluggish to the point of becoming unuseable. Export of 20 images to mail can take 10 min. It just becomes so slow as if strangled for memory. I find I shut down other apps but don't think this should be necessary with current OS technology. Any suggestions? Thanks
Have you checked what it going on, when Aperture becomes sluggish?
I'd recommend to launch some diagnostic tools, if you have not already done so:
Aperture's own "Activity Viewer": From the main menu bar: Window > Show Activity
This will tell you, how Aperture is spending its time : rendering, previews, scanning for faces or places, raw processing. Inparticulur, check, if Aperture is hanging while processing one particular image or video over and over again.
The Console window: Launch it from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. Look, if you see error messages or warnings in this window, when Aperture starts to hang.
The Activity Monitor: Launch it from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. This window will tell you, which processes are using the cpu, the RAM, and doing page outs to the disk. You can see, if other processing are competing with Aperture and slowing it down, orif Aperture is starved for memory.
How large are images? Do you have very large raw files or scans, or are your photos moderately sized?
Is your library on the internal drive or an external drive?
Do you see this slowness only with your main Aperture library, or also, if you create a new, small library with a few test images?

I have about 10,000 photos (.jpg ~3MB each) in my Aperture Library. I want to add many more photos but I'm worried about slow performance. My questions:
1. How big is your library or how big do you think the libraries can get?
2. Have you noticed slower performance with larger libraries?
3. Any opinion on breaking up into multiple smaller libraries vs. 1 larger library?I am running two libraries,
one for all of my work related imagery, 15,000+ images 50/50 raw & jpegs and
the other for all of my stuff I shoot of sporting clubs, the bit I give back to the community, 18,000+ predominantly jpeg's
both run smoothly, one on the MacPro and the other on the G4 laptop.
Issue starts to be the backing up, if you are thinking it will get BIG, try a library for each client. Could be a good selling point as well, "your imagery is isolated from other clients and has its own dedicated backup".

Aperture slows down on edited files
Hi folks, i run Aperture 2.1.2 on a 13" MacBook 2,4 GHz with 4 GB of RAM.
I noticed a loss of performance on both referenced and managed files as they get edited, especially when added of sharpen and enhance adjustments: the more adjustments they get the more Aperture slows down, especially annoying is scrolling through a 100% zoomed photo, with the movement delayed by 2/3 seconds...
There's actually a difference between referenced and managed files, as managed ones respond a bit better, but still not as an original one.
P.S. all masters are on the internal drive.
Thanks for any suggestion...cwog is correct about the overhead for displaying edited master images, but I disagree with his suggestion to export to view images. I suggest you use "Quick Preview" to display photos with minimal delay (use "P" as shortcut to turn on and off). You need to make sure you generate a preview automatically and set the size and quality under "Preferences --> Preview." Previews do not require the calculations for display as does the edited master image. Display time is much quicker.

Having real issues with Aperture 3.2.2. It is getting incredibly painful to use! General use is VERY slow and the longer I work with it the slower it gets even if it is the only application open. I just wondered if there was a reliable step by step guide in improving Aperture's performance?

MacBook Pro 2.8GHz dual core
4Gb RAM
750Gb HD (1/2 empty) Library is stored on internal drive.
25,000 library with all masters stored in Aperture library (library is as old as Aperture 1.0 and has under gone several upgrades with new versions but never a rebuild).
Majority of images are 8MP Canon RAWs but am starting to work with 18MP Canon RAWs after a camera upgrade.
Even contemplating jumping ship to Lightroom, but I like Aperture workflow and tools and I'm guessing my biggest issue is the size of my library.
I have read various things on here about rebuidling libraries, or using seperate libraries by year to reduce library size. I don't want to invest a load of time for minimal results. I also appreciate my machine would benefit from a RAM upgrade, but not wholly convinced this will fix my issues?

Is Aperture processing in the background? This shows at "Window➞Show Activity".
8 GB RAM recommended anyway. Check page outs if you want to see for yourself.
Splitting Library will have no major effect: Aperture uses memory well. Library size is mostly immaterial except as relates to drive size. (You have ample free space.)
Repair/Rebuild recommended. I do this regularly for all my Libraries. Of course, you shouldn't even open Aperture without having backups of your Libraries and Referenced Originals. Do this overnight -- it is also good to let Aperture run unmolested for a few hours, which it should have time to do after the Repair/Rebuild is complete. (Since your Library seems intact, "Repair" should be enough -- don't have to "Rebuild" yet.)
You may have additional "bottlenecks". Things to check:
- Does Aperture run faster/smoother under another user account? If so, delete your Aperture Prefs.
- Does Aperture run faster/smoother with another Library? If so, look for corrupt Images in your Library.
Repair, Rebuild, and Prefs deletion are covered on the Apple Aperture trouble-shooting page.

Hi there,I have a problem with my pc at work and because I am not quite sure in which one is exactly the problem I decide to ask you.The pc is intel pentium 4 with 3 Gb Ram XP professional service pack 3 Photoshop CS 5.
The pc is connected to server(data base).When I open a bunch of photos (20-30) approximately 8 - 12 MB each one and sometimes I experience a slow performance(for example I am trying to retouch/clone something and it takes a lot of time for the pc to redraw/respond) the interesting part is that it doesn't happen always(sometimes can be even 3 photos and it will take ages to do something) also I notice that after appr. 20 minutes it's suddenly start to work as it should normally(it's like there was an update and when is updated/complete everything is fine).When that start to happen today I restart CS5 and load the same photos and it work fine, so it is really bizarre for me.I put a 89% ram usage to the CS5(I pretty much use only all the time Photoshop and bridge ) also made the history steps to 7 and the cache to 6 for big and flat files.I was checking the Efficiency and it's all the time 100 % so it's like it's not the photoshop but like I said today i just restard the ps and upload the same photos and got fix...I tried to copy the photos on my hard drive(so it should not be affect of the performance of the server but still the same as when I take them straight from the server.Because the hard drive is only 80 gb ( I don't store anything there ) i did clean up and disk defragment still the same situation.Do you know what can be the problem and is it the Photoshop or the Pc?I'll appreciate it.
Thank youCould be that your PC is sometimes looking to check things on the server, and maybe the server or network is busy/bogged down and you PC gets caught in that cycle mess.....so,
suggest next time you use Ps, set win performance monitor perfmon.exe or perfmon.msc ; setup to view graph of disk use and network activity and cpu usage.....then you may see/track a problem area.
on win7, task manager does most of the same stuff -
First off, i think it's sad that i have to use my non apple device to post this question... Why has my iPad become absolutely useless after updating to iOS 8.1? I am unable to use my mini because it crashes, slow performance, major battery drain.
Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.

Slow performance of discoverer portlets
Hi,
I am running into slow performance of a particular page in portal, there are multiple sites hosted on the portal but these all have static text and are very quick to load but the one page with discoverer portlets and a web-clippping portlet is taking ages. If I run these reports on their own they are instant. Has anyone had similar problems with 9.0.2 portal and the discoverer reports ? I tried to identify a particular report that may be the culprit by deleting them one by one and to no avail. After a few hours effort I found the design mode was hanging as well. Again, just for this 1 page.
There are 3 tabs on this page with about 4 report portlets and 1 web-clipping portlet.

Seems to have been resolved although I'm not sure if thats the end of the story. Will wait and see.....
So far apparently a port conflict of some sort in the discoverer config was causing it to hang and then also other system demands on the network and server housing the discoverer end-user layer were also causing problems.
No error messages unfortunately...... -
Server 2012 R2 slow performance over all
This is a DELL PowerEdge R820 / 256GB RAM / 4TB onboard storage configured as Remote Desktop Services Host /TS... running QuickBooks, MS Office 2010 STD, Symantec EndPoint Protection (basic antivirus installation ONLY)... 1 month old server... SUPER fast,
super powerfull.... Part of an AD in SBS 2008 Premium... single NIC card 4 ports / 3 ports disabled. single IP... no VLANS... server is able to resolve ANY pc, DNS record with no problems... able to resolve DC by name, able to receive GP, able to update, able
to do everything that I can think of.... EXCEPT... anything I open, word, excel, QuickBooks, IE.... takes forever to open... after the application is open is fast but to open anything takes 3-4 minutes.... open ticket with Symantec all looks good, created
lots of exceptions for antivirus/real time scanning, open ticket with QuickBooks: files look good application was removed and reinstalled to be sure all was done correctly... check the binding order for the disabled NIC; the active one is TOP option, no errors
at all in event viewers for system, application, setup, no errors at all in DELL management tool, no hard drive errors, no controllers errors.... this server is replacing an old dell poweredge 2008 STD with 24GB RAM... the old DELL opens the same applications
way faster than the new one... same Quicken version; old server opens Quicken in seconds, new one 3-4 minutes..... Real time monitoring NEVER goes above 1% for CPU and 3% for memory utilization.... one more thing... removed antivirus 100% restart... same performance
without antivirus.....
Any ideas will be great as of how to troubleshoot the slow performance....

Slow Performance - Java Related?
This is an old box that I bought used recently, but the system install is recent. The system performs very slowly - about 50% of the speed of comparable Mac's in the XBench database. If I use Xupport to manully run "All" of the system maintenance crons I get some improvement, but it quickly goes back to being slow.
Looking at my logs I have a "boat load" of Java errors under CrashReporter; there will be a string of "JavaNativeCrash_pidXXX.log" entries - many of them, as follows:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.

Function=[Unknown.]

NOTE: We are unable to locate the function name symbol for the error

Many of the line entries that follow, but not all of them, refer to SargentD2OL, which is a Java app, which I installed, but it did not work properly so I removed it. Yet I continue to get Java errors that refer to this now non-existant app.
I have read that Java apps use a lot of resources, and that D2OL in particular uses a lot of resources. Can my slow performance problem be Java related? If so, any idea of how I can fix this problem?
G4 AGP Graphics Mac OS X (10.3.9) 500 MHz, 512M RAMSorry to take so long to respond, but other issues in life have demanded my attention.
None of the solutions given have had any affect. My Java folder has both a 1.3.1 and a 1.4.2 app - the Java Update 2 will not reinstall because it sees an up-to-date app in the folder. But reading the update file it says the older Java will be removed - but it is still there. Problem?
On XBench the system scores a 9 to 10, while similar boxes on the XBench database score around 18 to 20. My cpu, memory, and video scores are very low. The HD through-put scores are the only ones that are normal. TechTool Pro 4 finds no problems. I have removed the memory sticks one at a time and retested after each cycle - no difference.
I have two drives, each with a 10.3.9 install. One works fine, scores around a 17 on XBench, the other scores a 9 to 10. So it appears to be a software problem. The slower install is a drive from a iMac G3 that has been moved to the G4 - are there issues with this?
My favored drive is the prior G3 one (newer and faster than the other drive that system tests faster in XBench) - it has my profile and all my info on it. It worked fine in the G3 - no problems.

Slow performance on a iMac 27" (maybe originated by the HDD)

Well, I've had my iMac for 10 months now, but have never really paid attention to its performance since it was my first Mac and I was upgrading from a quite old computer, so it obviously proved to be a far superior machine.
However, I noticed the problem when I started to be more critical with my machine's performance (this triggered by the fact that I bought, some months after, a MacBook Air which flies beyond time and space). Curious about this, I requested a friend to do a benchmark test with Xbench resulting in his machine (another iMac 27” with comparable specs) clearly outperforming mine. Even the Air, with its slower processor and smaller RAM, has a relatively close performance.
Additionally, I have started to notice how the computer takes a long time to start-up and, after the desktop is “layed out”, it takes a lot of time before the machine becomes “responsive” (I usually try to start Mail and Google Chrome as soon as the pointer pops in!) with the final result that I have to wait in company of the beach ball for quite some seconds (half a minute) and even after the application had started, I can still hear the HDD working it as if there would be no tomorrow! And then, it is slooooow. Funnily enough, “tougher” applications like Photoshop or Illustrator don’t seem to have as many problems, relatively speaking.
A little bit on the background info: I have two partitions: one for Bootcamp (since I was migrating from Windows, I had some software that I wanted to use there: Matlab and Office, basically, and then some smaller Windows-only programs).
Derived from the benchmark test, I think I might have isolated the problem to the HDD (not sure though!).
SO THE QUESTIONS ARE:
1. How can I verify that the slow performance is due to the HDD being defective/badly configured/etc.?
2. Has the Windows Bootcamp Partition any effect on my machine’s performance under MacOS? (I would assume not, but you never know!). I have more than 1.3 TB free space left
3. What kind of corrective measures should I take?
4. Any other type of advice will be warmly welcome: I will try to do some PRAM and SMC resets but I am not counting on it. I had also ran the disk utilities and there were no permission errors (not so sure what this means, but I’ve read that it is supposed to be good news.)
5. Any extra info you might need, lemme know!

Probably not but 1.3TB of free space left on the total HD is not enough for OS X, OS X needs a minimum of 10-15% free space! If you mean 1.3TB of Windows space I'd recommend posting that question in the Boot Camp forum.

If the drive is failing per the AHT then it's covered by warranty and will need to be replaced. Remember back up!!!!!!!!!!

Can't hurt, make sure you read the instructions carefully and execute the tests exactly as they are described for Intel based iMacs.

If you no longer have a need for Windows on your iMac I'd recommend removing that partition using Boot Camp Assistant. That may correct your problems.
I would also recommend checking if System Preferences - Startup Disk and see if your internal HD is highlighted as the Startup Disk.
In addition I would recommend checking your Login Items (System Preferences - Accounts - Login Items) and delete any applications you don't need launching at Login. -

I have a Q9450 proccessor, Vista 64 bit with 4GB ram. ever since I installed CS4, things are going a bit slow in PPRO, and I don't understand why?
For example, scrubbing or playback in the timeline have become painfully slow, and sometimes, I see leftovers of the marker, as if I don't have enough memory (it's hard to explain in writing... I hope
you got it). Overall, all the symptoms shows I don't have enough memory, because of the slow performance, but it doesn't make sense, cause I have 4 GB, and in CS3 it all worked great.
Any suggetsions?worked just great...

I highly recommend switching to Vista 64 if you are a Windows user (Mac guys are OK with 10.5.4 or higher) Vista 64 will allow Production Premium CS4 to run using more than 4GB of Ram (XP/Vista32 Limitation). As with most NLEs, there are several programs running at the same time to give you the NLE experience. CS4 now allows each process to take up to 4Gb of RAM. If you have 16GB of RAM, then 4 processes can take up to 4GB each. This is a HUGE advantage over CS3. What are some examples of processes? DynamicLink, AfterServer, Photoshop Server, Adobe Media Encoder, Titler, Playback, Capture, Importer, and many more. I tell most people to count on buying 8GB minium.
So maybe I have to add more ram, in order CS4 to run properly...

Slow performance LR 1.3.1 (Library Module)
LR 1.2 is running OK on my iMac. A while ago I tried LR 1.3. The upgrade really slowed down performance. Mostly a lag in the sliders and navigation tools in both Library and Develop modules that made it unworkable to me. I changed back to LR 1.2.
Since I want to import Canon G9 RAW files into LR, I upgraded to LR 1.3.1 recently. Performance of sliders and the navigation tool in the Develop module seems the same as in LR 1.2 (or maybe even a little better). Which means it is OK (workable). It still shows the blur when navigating a 100% zoomed image though. But the navigation tool in the Library module still has the same slow performance as it had in LR 1.3. Unworkable!!! I tried everything: optimizing, new catalog, rendering previews, etc.
I need the Library module to work smoothly (as in LR 1.2) in order to compare images at 100% zoom. I am afraid I have to go back to LR 1.2 again and find another solution for my Canon G9 RAW files. Most inconvenient. I am very disappointed. Especially, since Adobe showed they CAN get it right with the Develop module in version LR 1.3.1...

Please Adobe, make the Library module run as smoothly as the Develop module in version 1.3.2...The preview folder is 2,11 GB big. The .lrcat is 47 MB big.
I opened a new test catalog. I imported 326 images. After the import I rendered 1:1 previews. It took a long time. Real memory used was between 700-1000MB. Virtual memory used was between 1000-1400MB. When it was done rendering it still keep on using 700MB real memory and 1000MB virtual memory. I had to close LR and restart. Real memory after restart was 75MB real memory and 375 virtual memory.
But it didn't matter. The lag in the navigation tool of the Library module was still there.
I noticed that when clicking in the navigation window there was less delay as when I slide the white square in the window (in Library module). In the develop module this seems the other way around. Sliding showed less delay than clicking.
What's going on here?
I also have a MacBook. Performance seems much faster than on my iMac overall. After creating a new catalog and rendering 1:1 previews, the lag in the navigation window seems less than before. But it was still there... -
Slow Performance Weeks after Encryption
I encrypted my organization's laptops several weeks ago and did not return them to users until after I could tell by device performance that the bulk encrypting task had completed. I have two users that are experiencing extremely slow performance on their systems. When the users are typing anything like a Word document, upon each keystroke they see the Windows 7 "circle" icon at the mouse cursor. This seems to come and go several times over the week, and every few days we are getting a request to resolve the issue but after restarting the behavior may not act up anymore.
I found a TID suggesting to change HKLM\SOFTWARE\Novell-FDE\Parameters\ThrottleEncryption to a lower level like Idle or BelowNormal. Is there anything else that I should also try? Thanks!Yes, but nothing from Novell yet - I will keep pushing them forward and let you know if I get some results.

We are now suspecting that there is some issues with the policy service that
plays tricks on us.

In ZCC on the devices that you are having issues with look at the Emergency
Recovery tab and see if you have multiple listings in here that corresponds
to the slowness. If so your devices are decrypting and then re-encrypting.
Your mention of being asked to reboot leads me to believe that is what is
happening to you.
I have had a few SRs going on this one for a while and it got bumped to
backend but no info in a month or so.

I encrypted my organization's laptops several weeks ago and did not
return them to users until after I could tell by device performance that
the bulk encrypting task had completed. I have two users that are
experiencing extremely slow performance on their systems. When the
users are typing anything like a Word document, upon each keystroke they
see the Windows 7 "circle" icon at the mouse cursor. This seems to come
and go several times over the week, and every few days we are getting a
request to resolve the issue but after restarting the behavior may not
act up anymore.
I found a TID suggesting to change
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Novell-FDE\Parameters\ThrottleEncryption to a lower level
like Idle or BelowNormal. Is there anything else that I should also
