Aperture split-tone adjustment?

I just switched from using Adobe Lightroom beta 4 to Aperture 1.5. Is it just me or is there really no way to make duotone or split-tone conversions in Aperture? I've been able to get some great looks with this feature in Lightroom (which has been available since beta 1) similar to cross-processing, etc.
This seems an incredible oversight by Apple as I know that many wedding shooters and fine artists use split-toning all the time.
Am I missing something?
G5 Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks for your post. I actually found somewhat of a work-around to my problem. I'm not sure where the selective recolor adjustment is in Aperture but I was able to achieve a cross-process-type color adjustment by experimenting with the tint adjuster within the Exposure module. I adjusted shadows, highlights and mid-tones and am fairly happy with the result.
In order to apply this type of adjustment to a black and white image, I think you have to import one because, when you apply the monochrome mixer to convert your image to black and white, you're unable to apply different tones/tints to various tonalities of the image because the mixer over-rides the tint adjustment.
On another note, can anyone tell me how to apply a vignette adjustment in Aperture?

  • Bridge CS6 How to turn off auto tone adjustment for the loupe?

Adobe Bridge CS6. 'Apply auto tone adjustments' is unchecked in Camera Raw Preferences. Yet every time I click on an image in the preview panel it does a tonal adjustment before it magnifies the image detail. I am viewing bracketed images and do not want any auto tone applied at any time while previewing images. How can I turn off all auto tone adjustment for the program - including the loupe. I never had this issue in a previous version. I'm on PC. Thanks for any help!

All 4 Default Image Settings are unchecked. Checking this further I have found this is only a visual issue in Bridge Preview. I have opened the same raw file before any adjustment had taken place (w/o using the loupe magnifier) in PS CS6 - and then again opened it after using the magnifier which did an auto contrast adjust on the image. Both files are the same in PS CS6. This is only a visual issue within Bridge (Master Collection CS6) on my Win7 64 bit machine. No issue with a standalone PS CS6 version on my XP 64 bit system.
There is no auto adjustment of the image until I use the loupe (magnifier tool).
Note my previous comment as to what happens when I use it. Thanks!
I have a feeling this is a bug. I have a Photography help group on fb and posed this question to them. I had mostly no issue responses but got this from another person. I checked after reading this and it is the same issue with me - this only happens with raw files, not jpeg. Here is his comment line.
Carl, I see what you mean, I have tried several adjustments to the preferences and none seem to work. The image automatically adjusts after a brief time. There does not seem to be any way to turn off the adjustment. I'm using Bridge CS 6 on a Mac. I don't think it has anything to do with camera calibration, but it only happens when using RAW files. I tried it on JPGs and TIFFs and it did not adjust the loupe image. Wonder what Adobe has to say
So - tThanks for any thoughts! So at least it's not going to be an editing issue - but it's a pain here. I use Bridge to edit my shoots and I often shoot bracketed images. While I cull images according to the histogram, I also do visual assessment and I can't have Bridge doing it's own thing on tonal adjustment.

  • Horizontal scroll not working  in aperture split view

I had recently upgraded to mountain lion and the newest aperture, but I noticed a problem with horizontal scrolling in aperture split view.  I am currently using a magic mouse, and it scrolls just fine within other applications except in aperture split view.  (it doesn't go to the next picture when I gesture  left and right)  if I do it many times, it will change to the next picture but then stops scrolling again.  I had tried to use a trackpad and it is better but I have to do it slowly and occationally it just doesn't work.  It only happens only in Aperture and not in safari or other applications.  Does anyone know the solution to this problem?  Any little help is greatly apprecitated

The recent Aperture update disabled the "Scroll to navigate photos in the Viewer" option.
You may need to reenable it in the Aperture general preferences.

  • Aperture crashes when adjusting print settings.

    Hello,
    Macbook Pro OSX 10.4.11
    Aperture 1.5.6
    ATI Graphics Card
I've had Aperture crash on me about 6 times today. Each time I am adjusting my print settings. Very frustrating. Within the last 48 hrs. Aperture has lost a handful of images. They were there one minute, the next they were gone. Now it's crashing when I'm adjusting print settings.
Also... probably shouldn't post this here but... My computer shuts down when running on less than 33% battery power. Just shuts itself right down... no warning, nothing.
    Any help... HUGELY appreciated.

Did you ever figure this out? My MBP is doing the same thing. I'm trying to print contact sheets. I can configure the images for the sheet, but the "Printer" box show "No printer selected" and I cannot click on the text to add or type in a printer.
Below it, the "Print Settings" button is active, but clicking on it crashes Aperture within 3 or four seconds.
I think this must be an Aperture problem as I can print from PS and from the various Nikon programs I have.

  • Events a mess after splitting and adjusting time.(iphoto '11)

My most recent event is such a mess I don't really know where to start without writing an essay, in the hope that it's been seen before I'll be breif but am willing to expand and provide screenshots etc if it will help.
Basically, I've duplicated the contents of the event twice and ended up with 3 events called 'original', '16:9' and '4:3' (hopefully no explanation needed).
So the first thing I notice is when I click on any of these events, all 3 are shown in list view (with the collapsable arrows) but only one of the events will actually display the photos despite the others saying that they have the correct number of photos.
I'm wondering if this is now how iPhoto 11 works, if it is fair enough, I haven't actually split events like this before in this version) and if it is can I delete the two events that don't show photos without affecting the third event, I haven't tried so far just in case.
But it gets worse, I've collected together photos other people have taken and adjusted the time so they display in order, now instead of all all my photos being listed in one of the events I have a few in each and no matter what I do I don't seem to be able to regroup them except by highlighting all 3 events and opening them together.
My issue is compounded because I have a lot of photos in this event(s) and the more I try to move them around the more complicated it is to keep track of them.

    Old Toad wrote:
How did you duplicate the photos in the original event and then create a new separate event with those duplicates?
cmd-D to duplicate, select the second photo (I sort by date, so the second photo is the duplicate of the first), split event, (this moves all but the first photo into a new event), manually select all the originals in the new event and drag them into the first event.
When you open one of the events with no photos do you see any thumbnail windows, although blank?
No. Unfortunately I've been doing a little more fiddling so can't post a proper screenshot but using the one below as an example:
You will see the numbers of photos don't add up.
    By way of example:
    Three events (original, 16:9 & 4:3)
By selecting 'original' from the main event window I get what you see, it's as though I'd selected all three events before double clicking but didn't.
By selecting '16:9' from the main event window, all 3 events will open again in list view, in this view the 'originals' heading has the other 86 photos/thumbs in, the '16:9' heading has the other 86 photos/thumbs in, and the '4:3' heading has 1 photo/thumb in.
By selecting '4:3' from the main event window, all 3 events will open again in list view, in this view the 'originals' heading has no photos/thumbs in, the '16:9' heading has has no photos/thumbs in, and the '4:3' heading has 1 photo/thumb in.
If I do select all 3 events in the main event window and double click, I get all three headings with all the photos/thumbs in.
That was up until a moment or two ago, now if I repeat the action in coloured text, I don't get headings for events that don't show any photos.

  • Missing Aperture Built-in  Adjustment Presets

    Hello,
Just installed Aperture 3.5.1 when i go and try editing with adjustment presets I find that all the built-in presets are missing.I can not figure how to bring them back..those were handy tools as advertised by Apple on web site..very disappointed. Please help me.Here is the screenshot of the effects menu.

Delete Aperture from the Applications folder (but don't empty the Trash), then download it again from the Purchased tab of the AppStore. Probably the download was incomplete.

  • Aperture 3.03 Adjustment bricks suddenly disappear

In full screen mode I will see a histogram, but the space under adjustments is blank. So far I have been able to return to view mode. The space is still blank, no bricks showing, but I can pull down adjustments and click on any brush. The adjustment bricks return. Closing and restarting Aperture did not fix the problem. Using Aperture 3.03. I intend to demo Aperture at a club meeting on Saturday. Hope this does not repeat.

Sounds like you have Quick Preview turned on - check to see if the Quick Preview icon is selected.

  • Aperture Split View Misbehaving

The vertical photos in the split view bar have all switched from being displayed vertically/normally to being rotated and showing "squashed". They only do it with photos imported from my Sony DSV-HX5V, not iPhone or other cameras. Any ideas?

    A few simple things first:
    - Does the problem persist after closing and re-opening Aperture?
    - Are they distorted in Grid view?
    - In Split view, does changing from Filmstrip to Grid (still in Split view) correct the distortion? Does changing the size of the Previews in the Split view grid (use the slider) correct them?
    - What happens when you select one Preview, and select "Update Preview" from the context-sensitive menu?

  • Aperture Split View Problem

The vertical photos in the split view bar at the bottom have all switched from being displayed normally to being rotated and showing squashed and distorted.
I have tried to close and re-open Aperture, and I have also restarted the computer.  The pictures are distorted whther they are in the Grid view or Filmstrip.  I also tried to "Update Preview", but it tells me that it is up to date. The horizontal/landscape pictures are showing fine, the problem is only with the vertical/portrait pictures in the Split view.

Select all the ones in one Project and run "Photos→Generate Preview".  Does that work?
"Update Preview" changes to "Generate Preview" when "{Alt}" is pressed.

  • Aperture hangs when adjusting the exposure....

After upgrading to Aperture 3, I've discovered that it often hangs when I try to adjust the exposure...have to force quit....happened three times today. Is this a known issue?

Yes. Read other threads on this. I work around by first clicking on an exposure adjustment without moving a slider. Just clicking sets Aperture to 'process.' Once you see 'processing' has stopped, you will likely be good to go. Also, if an image freezes Aperture, after relaunching the application, go back to that image and force a regeneration of the thumbnail (or preview). This too will help. And report to Apple. The more they hear, the more likely to repair the issue.

  • Need of DTMF tone adjustment

One adjustment our current smartphone doesn't have that we found it needed in order for better communication with our office's phone system is the ability to adjust the DTMF tone; so, while researching new smartphones, it is something we are looking for.  This is not listed in the User Guide for the Motorola Droid Razr so I chatted with Verizon and was told that since this is such a new phone, it should be capable of this.  I then emailed Motorola, they replied that the DTMF is not adjustable on this phone.  Have any Droid Razr users found this to be an issue?

    CF-Robin,
I'm sorry for any misinformation, but the great news is that the Droid Razr does offer an option to adjust the DTMF tone. Simply go into Settings> Call Settings> DTMF Tones> Select Normal or Long. I sure hope that helps make your Razr experience even more enjoyable!
    Thank you!

  • After upgrading my Aperture software, the adjustment tools don't work on most my projects. only a few. what happened?

Help... After upgrading, only SOME of my libraries allow the adjustments tools to work. What do I do to regain access that allows me to edit my photos?

I recall that from Aperture 2 to 3 the RAW decoder was updated and some of the adjustments required you to manually reprocess the RAW file using the new decoder. I don't remember the exact button but it appears on top with the RAW decode brick and says something like reprocess RAW. Once you do this, the new adjustments will work.
This only would matter if you are using RAW files.

  • Skin tone adjustments in Aperture

I normally use Photoshop for editing, and Aperture as an "image management" and output system. However, I just did a shoot of my brother's baby and I have 200+ pictures to correct so PS is not an option this time. My nephew's skin is very red, so I'm wondering what the best way to correct that is in Aperture. I normally use selective color or curves in PS, but neither of those are available in Aperture.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi there,
Sounds like we use the same prcedure for similar reasons.
Yes and no to your question, and sadly, a bigger NO that there isn't a true workflow. We're into the best workaround FOR YOU. Mine is FOR ME, and (as my wife will tell you, I'm unique .... which I take as a compliment, errrrr).
Yes, the time to batch export and then import may be faster, technically, possibly, maybe, who knows?
No, the issue of getting the photos tagged back into the stacks (if this is of use to you) becomes manual activity and is unsupported by the system outside of sort conditions.
You can easily overwhelm memory with CS2 loading images and Aperture there as well, so I tend to do 10 or a dozen at a time ... more if image size and memory permits. Run an Action in CS2 unless masks are needed, Save and Close. On Save, the image is placed back into Aperture without any further work on your (i.e. MINE since I am LAAAZY).
BTW, somebody else mentioned this. I am a big fan, but have ghad to learn to work with quarter tone Levels. If the color shift is most needful on the skin tones, and less objectionable elsewhere, you may be able to use the quarter tone adjusts in combination with exposure and white balance adjustments within Aperture. Oh, how I would like selection and masks!!!!

  • Re-arrange Aperture bricks for split toning

    Hi
Does anybody know if it is possible to re-arrange the control bricks in Aperture.
I'd like to know because I believe Aperture applies its affects from the top down (correct me if i'm wrong). If this is the case, i'd like to move the Monochrome Mixer so that it sits between the White Balance brick and the Exposure brick.
If my thinking is right, then it should be possible to split tone a b&w image by using the RGB levels sliders.
Just a wild thought! Hope someone can put m straight.
    Cheers

It applies them in the order they are executed by the user- AFAIK

This won't work if you're talking about the kind of split toning offered by ACR where the highlights are one color tone and the shadows are another.
You can really tweak out a B&W using the individual RGB sliders and the color sliders, but the color monotone is just mono.
