Aperture Stills Question

FCP X 's browser will show me my stills in Aperture, but only the masters are showing.  I would like to use a version of the still ( one that has been cropped and  has other adjustments done to the still image.  Is there a way to see and bring in the versions ?
I shoot most of my stills in RAW using a very flat picture style, ( same as the video) and then each one  is adjusted.  With Final Cut Express I would export my stills and resize to 1920 x 1080 on export.  The newly exported  jpegs woud be on the media scratch drive.
As I am typing my question it occurs to me that I might be better off using my previuos work flow for these large raw stills.  While it would be nice not to have duplicate files ( one RAW and one JPEG ), FCP X might not be the best software for resizing raw stills.  If I were contiuue with my older work flow where would the best place to put the converted and resized exports?

BenB,
Thanks for sharing your results.
I did a quick test also.
I creatred a new project and droped a clip in that was a 1920 x1080 29.97 fps AIC. ( It's AIc because it was on the media drive via a FCE lOg and transfer).  So by my understanding my project is now 1920 x 1080 i 29.97 fps.  I brought in 2 stills form the browser under Aperture.  One was a 5616x3744 RAW picture the second one was a 3680 x 2070 JPEG ( a still from a video camera ).
In both cases the Background wheel was gray for a few seconds and then went to green, so some work was being done to the stills.
Clicking on the info button while the still was selected showed that the JPEG still was now a 1840 x 1035/60 fps JPEG.
The RAW still became a 2808 x 1872 /60 fps JPEG.
I am somewhat surprised at the dimensions of the stills and really surprised that they are 60 fps !
Whats up with that ?
FCP X seemed to handle resizing the RAW stills very quickly, now a whoe batch of them might be more noticeable.  I haven't tried applying any effects or exporting them to see what they might look like.  I may try that later.
If I can't find my versions of Aperture stills in the browser I guess I will use my old work flow and export the versions to a folder on the media drive.  Then import them.

  • RAW Photos from Canon EOS 7d imported into Aperture still not working...

I have just purchased a new macbook pro with the most current operating system and have updated Aperture 2 to the most current version and my Canon EOS 7d RAW files are still showing up with a red box message "Unsupported File Format"......WHY ISN'T IT WORKING?! I've been waiting for months for this to work and finally they say it will work with the update and it it doesn't. And I read about the "~" issue and I checked and don't have that condition in any of my folders. PLEASE HELP!

In addition to the above comments, make sure you have run "Software Update" (if you're new to the Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner then select "Sofwtare Update..." from the pull-down menu).
The EOS 7D, being rather new, requires that you have +Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.7+ installed. This is an update to Mac OS X (not an update to Aperture.)
If unsure, open "System Preferences" -> "Software Update" -> "Installed Software" and view the list of updates to ensure that you specifically have that update already installed.

  • Some Aperture stills not appearing in iMovie 11 Media Browser

    Hello all,
I have been importing images into Aperture for a while now and just realized that iMovie (09 and 11) are not reading some of the stills I have stored in it. I have made sure that all my images are stored in an Aperture managed library and not as reference files. When I start up iMovie it takes a while and scans for new videos but I'm concerned with the stills that are not appearing. I can see the project and album titles appearing in the Media Browser but iMovie states that there are no files inside. I've also told Aperture to always share previews with iLife and iWork. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forums.
The fact that you are able to see the Ap library and the project suggests that there maybe no previews available for that project.
At the top of the Library tab is a little cog, within here is an option for previews, also in the Ap preferences is another option for creating previews, check that these are set correctly.

  • Aperture stills importing to DVD Studio Pro

apart from loading all my aperture library into iPhoto (and that generates loads of extra files on the drive), is there a way to import stills from Aperture into DVD Studio Pro? There seems to be an iphoto or a file browser input but nothing from Aperture. Any ideas folks?

Have you tried dragging the folder of stills from the finder into the DVDSP assets tab?

  • Aperture help/questions - File Size, Versions, etc

    Hi,
I am new to the Mac, and after a small learning curve am now loving it. Can’t believe what I missed all those years under Windows. Anyway one of my biggest problems has been workflow and photo management, so I rushed out and bought Aperture without much investigation. I’m still getting to know it, and so far think it’s very good except for the following points, which may be down to my inexperience with the product rather than any shortcomings. I store all my shots as managed files in my Aperture library.
    1. File sizes. Often I use Photoshop for minor/major modifications. There would be few shots that would not require some tweaking if I wanted to get the best image. I have PS3 set up as my external editor. My problem is the huge file size generated after using PS. For example my master file may be around 3mb (jpeg) but my PS file is 45mb! Now if I have a few versions of the PS file, as often is the case, I go from a few megabytes of storage for the image to a few hundred megabytes of storage!! Is there a way around this ??
What’s more if I create a Duplicate Version of the PSD version and do NOTHING it grows again. For example my initial JPEG is 2.78mb, I creat a new version via PS and add some adjustment layers and save the new version back. This new version has now grown to 45.56mb. I then wish to make another different version based on my previous version so I first select the version1 and then Duplicate Version. Now before I do ANYTHING if I save it back I get a new version with a file size of 68.49mb!!! If I do this again, my next version is hasn’t grown in size again, it’s still 68.49mb. What gives ??
    2. Per 1) above can I save back from PS in JPEG and not PSD to bring the file size down. That is open the file in PS via the external editor in Aperture, make some adjustments and save it back as a new version in JPEG ??
    3. Related to 2) above I often want to have multiple PS versions. For example the first one may just have some USM added. Subsequent ones however may have different crops, tonings, etc. So in Aperture what I do is create my first version and add the USM and whatever other standard treatments. Then save this. Then create a duplicate of this version and open the duplicate in PS via the external editor in Aperture. Make some changes then save back. Only now I have 4 files – the original, my version 1, the duplicate of this and my new version based on the duplicate. So I must now delete the duplicate (file three) version . Is there a better way ??
    4. I find it hard sometimes to tell if I am on a master file or a version. Is there a way to definitely tell ? For example on occasion I have gone to delete a version, I get the dialog warning that all versions and masters will be deleted and then I seem to have lost both the version AND the master ?? This seems a bit dangerous.
    5. The vault seems very slow to update when minor changes have been made. For example I created a new version of a master with a minor modification performed in Aperture (saturation set to zero) and then updated my vault. This should be a very quick process as the new version really just consists of some modification information and not the whole file. The update takes as long as if I were to add a few hundred megs of new photo’s to the library ! Is it overwriting the whole vault again, or is it just updating the changes (as I assume it should)
Sorry for the long winded explanations. Any advice/help/thoughts are much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Check your Export Image settings like quality, size, DPI. Prior to Open with External Editor make the photograph as best as possible, all adjustments, crop, etc and then take it to Photoshop, back to Aperture and print it or upload to web etc. If the photograph is being used on the web there is no need to make a huge file
quote: "above can I save back from PS in JPEG and not PSD to bring the file size down"
You might think about keeping the jpegs jpeg on the export from Aperture to PS instead of jpeg to psd to jpeg.
    4. quote: "I find it hard sometimes to tell if I am on a master file or a version. Is there a way to definitely tell ?"
the "m" key toggles from Master to Version (adjusted).
    5. quote: "The vault seems very slow to update when minor changes have been made."
this is contingent on the system like rpms, processor, usb or fw...

  • Aperture newbie question

I just got my first Mac and decided to get started with Aperture (after being a long-time Lightroom user).
I am trying to get used to the import functions - as compared to LR - in moving my files into the Aperture library.
I have been using various cameras (primarily Olympus) where there is an option to shoot RAW+JPEG and I see in the import box there is an option whether or not to import both, and if importing both - which to have as the MASTER or to import as separate masters.
My question is: once the images are imported, is there anyway to change this initial selction (I know if you import them together you can later change which is the master)"
For example - if I had it set to import both and set the JPEG as master, can you separate them into two separate masters so they both show in the browser?
Or the opposite - if you import them as separate masters, can you then "combine" them so that only one shows?
In Lightroom this is called "stacking", but it seems that the only way to do this in Aperture (unless I am missing something which is completely likely) is by a series of photos that were taken sequentially.
    Thanks,
    Steve

If you import both with one as Master (JPEG or RAW), you can use the context menu to create a new version from Master and then switch it to the other file type so you have side-by-side JPEG and RAW versions. This is done one at a time though (AFAIK - there is no batch process to split them after importing together).
If you import them as separate Masters, you can manually stack them as you wish by selecting both and then using the Stack command in the menu or using 'Command + K' keys (AFAIK - there is not a batch process for this procedure either).

  • Aperture RAW questions

So, I just took a peek at my system and there is only 2GB of pictures and 150 of "other". I'm thinking that the "other" are my RAW files (since I only started shooting RAW on a regular basis 6 months ago). My macbook pro has been lagging a bit lately and I have a feeling these RAW files may have somehting to do with it.
My first question is where can I find these RAW files. I've seen it before, but forget how to navigate to it.
My second question is once I find these files, would it be safe to back them all up on an external, and then delete them from my macbooks' harddrive? Or is that just stupid?
    Thanks.

    1.  How big and how full is your system drive?  In Finder, select your drive and run "File→Get Info".  Capacity and Available space are listed in the "General" section at the top of the Info window.
    2.  How big is your Aperture Library?  In Finder, select your Library file and run "File→Get Info".  The size will be reported at the top right of the Info window.  You may have to wait a couple of minutes for Finder to calculate the size.
    3.  Are your Images' Masters Managed or Referenced (or a mix)?  Referenced Masters are badged (you can show Badges on any of the seven Metadata Overlays, as well as on the Metadata tab of the Inspector).  If any are Referenced, determine where they are stored, find them, and find out how much storage space they occupy.
In general you should keep at least 15% of your system drive free (empty) in order to not crimp your system's performance.  It is normal for Aperture users to run out of storage space on their system drives.  The common solution to convert some or all of your Images' Masters from Managed (= stored inside the Aperture Library) to Referenced (= stored outside the Aperture Library, usually on a different drive).  Aperture provides tools to move your Masters wherever you would like them.  NB:  Referenced Masters are not backed up by Aperture's Vault feature, and are not backed up automatically when you back up your Library.  Therefore you must add to your backup protocol something that includes backing up your Referenced Masters.
There are many many reasons for slowing performance.  Lack of free space on your system drive is a common one, but you should not rule out others without checking.  It is also advised to run Software Update to make sure your OS and other programs are completely up-to-date.
    Good Luck.

  • Aperture backup question

I have been spending the last 3 days migrating from iPhoto to Aperture. I left the 15k photos I had in the iPhoto Library and have referenced them via Aperture. I have spent multiple hours organizing the Projects and Folders in Aperture so I finally have a hierarchy that makes sense. Here are my questions:
    1) Should I have moved the Library from iPhoto to Aperture? What are the pro's/cons to that move? I left them in iPhoto because my wife likes that application and I want to make sure she can easily view photos, but will move them to Aperture if it resolves question #2.
    2) How do I make sure that if my system crashes I do not have to reorganize all the Projects and Folders again? I back up my iPhoto Library, but how do I make sure my hierarchy is not lost? Will simply backing up the Aperture Library cover me, or do I need to do something else to make sure I do not need to go through this again?

"you will also want to backup the aperture library file as it contains all the "directions" for image adjustment ..."
Does this mean that it will also back up the "structure/hierarchy" even if the photos are in the iPhoto library? I am terrified of losing all the organizational work I have been doing. I am backing up the Aperture Library as part of my back up, but nto sure if it is actually protecting the hierachy since the photos are not in it.
Is SuperDuper that much better than the Apple "Backup" program?

  • How to import Aperture stills?

I am just beginning to explore Motion 4 and I need help. I am trying to import still images from Aperture into Motion 4. However, when I click on library/photos there is not option to choose an application. Is there anything I have to do to access images in Aperture?
    Appreciate any advise.
    Thanks

I remember that I could access the picture folders in applications such as Photoshop. As far as Aperture is concerned I can only locate the system icon for the Aperture library and when clicked on, it will open the application but not reveal the individual folders or images.
Anyway, I understand from your advise that I can not import still images from an application but from folders only. This will help me to better understand, knowing that there is no shortcut like with sound files from iTunes.
    Thanks for your help DH

  • Aperture Stills to FCP

Can somebody PLEASE offer at step-by-step guide explaining how to re-size photos in Aperture so they won't look like total crap in the FCP Timeline.
My stills look great in the Viewer but they're horrible in the Timeline. I dragged the still files into a folder I created in my project file. I then imported the stills into the Browser.
    My photos are 2496 x 1664. My video is 720 x 480, 29.97 fps, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC.
This is a very frustrating issue. Please don't tell me to do a Google search or to search this forum because I did and there's no step by step guide. I also searched the manuals and could not find an explanation.

OK, I tried creating a new project. I used a couple of HD Easy Set-up options but no matter what I choose, the frame size in my browser reads that the project is 720 x 480.
How do I set up a project so that when I import JPEG files that are already in an external drive, they will import into an HD project?

  • Basic aperture library question

Trying out aperture i am discovering how large the library file can get. I have turned off previews but I am finding that my 88GB of photos is making a file around 70Gb in size. I know this is small for many people but that is way too big for me to keep on my 300 gb internal drive. Is this an average size?
I could buy another drive but it just bugs me that such a huge library is made when I don't want it. (And I thought Bridge's cache could get big) Is there a useful purpose that the library serves that I'm ignorant of ? I'm still trying to grasp the program.

I suggest Referenced Master Files (discussed in the tutorial). Try this workflow, first using the Finder (not Aperture) to copy images from CF card to computer hard drive:
    • Remove the CF card from the camera and insert it into a CF card reader. Faster readers and cards are preferable.
    • Finder-copy images from CF to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
    • Eject CF.
    • Burn DVD copies of the original images (optional backup step).
    • Eject DVDs (optional backup step).
    • From within Aperture, import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location."
    • Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing).
    • Reformat CF in camera, and archive DVDs of originals off site.
Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media.
If you follow the above steps exactly your files should import fine. I prefer Referenced Masters, even on a Mac Pro. IMO it makes for a clean backup workflow and a forever-logical organization. And Referencing Masters ensures that the size of the Library will always be small enough that it need not cause a hard drive to exceed 50% full and reduce speed.

  • Aperture STILL won't launch

Aperture stopped launching this morning. I tried the fix suggested in another thread of replacing the Prokit.framework with an older version but it didn't work for me. Unfortunatley that discussion is marked as answered and has gone off in another direction.
    Running version 1.5.6 of Aperture.
Odly another minor app won't work, You Control Tunes. Don't know if there's any connection. But right now I need to get Aperture up and running as I have photos to deliver tomorrow.

I think I found the problem, you may not believe me though.
I got Aperture working again after reinstalling Pro App Support even though it didn't work the first time. The one that worked for me is the latest version which seems to be causing everyone else problems. Anyway suddenly today Aperture stopped working again. Annoying beyond belief. So I reinstalled Pro App Support again and it worked again.
But here's the weird thing – just before both Aperture crashes I remembered doing the same thing on my computer. This may sound weird but both crashes (or refusal to launch) happened just after I connected my Nokia 6300 via bluetooth (USB d-link connector) to my Mac. Now I know what you're thinking, how on earth could that have anything to do with Aperture? I agree. Whether it's just some bizarre coincidence or some unknown technical flaw the fact is that it's the only thing I did with my computer. Anybody out there know why bluetooth might affect Pro App Support?

  • Aperture & Iphoto question

I'm very disapointed with Iphoto not giving me the ability to delete the original file after i have edited it on Photoshop CS5, endless duplicating with no configurable alternative.
I want to know if aperture does the same thing ? or does it delete the original file and keep the good edited one like its supposed to ? if so i might consider purschasing it.
    Thank You

You may find a non-destructive workflow -- one of Aperture's features -- helps your business.  Unlike edits in graphics programs, edits done in Aperture (they are called "Adjustments") are saved only as text instructions.  The gain in computational efficiency is enormous.  You create share-able image-format files only when you need them, and you don't save them (Aperture automatically saves your Adjustments).
But that involves a different workflow than you currently have.  When you use PS as your external editor from Aperture, it does duplicate the actual file on disk.  Your choice is less "iPhoto vs. Aperture" as "Aperture vs. Photoshop".  They are very different programs, designed to provide a comprehensive toolset for different kinds of users (Aperture is designed for photographers; PS is designed for graphic artists).
There are _many_ things to learn about Aperture, and, imho, _many_ ways in which it could serve you in your business.

  • Still Questions about Backing-Up Itunes

When I tried to reinstall iTunes (9.2.1) library from my external hard drive to a newly installed iTunes 10 on a new HDD, I noticed my play count, ratings, and EQ settings weren't present. Well, the new HDD was a bust in lease than 24 hours. I took out the new busted HDD and put my old HDD back in to my computer with iTunes and upgraded to iTunes 10. . . so I could finally play with my new Touch 4g. I'm getting another new HDD today; I'm going to back-up my iTunes 10 library and then move them to the new HDD.
My question , what am I doing wrong? I thought I read Apples instructions on backing up, and reinstalling an iTunes Library. Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

Thanks Katrina for joining the conversation. To be honest, I had copied and paste my iTunes folder back into Tunes. I'm sure I'm making this far more complicated than it is. Even so, I'd hate to go through 35000 songs and set EQ settings and ratings again. Thanks again for your assistance.
Here's Apples Support Instructions . . . I posted the wrong link but for me I don't think it makes any difference. lol! http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
