Aperture Stills to FCP

Can somebody PLEASE offer at step-by-step guide explaining how to re-size photos in Aperture so they won't look like total crap in the FCP Timeline.
My stills look great in the Viewer but they're horrible in the Timeline. I dragged the still files into a folder I created in my project file. I then imported the stills into the Browser.
My photos are 2496 x 1664. My video is 720 x 480, 29.97 fps, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC.
This is a very frustrating issue. Please don't tell me to do a Google search or to search this forum because I did and there's no step by step guide. I also searched the manuals and could not find an explanation.

OK, I tried creating a new project. I used a couple of HD Easy Set-up options but no matter what I choose, the frame size in my browser reads that the project is 720 x 480.
How do I set up a project so that when I import JPEG files that are already in an external drive, they will import into an HD project?

  • Aperture Stills Question

FCP X 's browser will show me my stills in Aperture, but only the masters are showing.  I would like to use a version of the still ( one that has been cropped and  has other adjustments done to the still image.  Is there a way to see and bring in the versions ?
I shoot most of my stills in RAW using a very flat picture style, ( same as the video) and then each one  is adjusted.  With Final Cut Express I would export my stills and resize to 1920 x 1080 on export.  The newly exported  jpegs woud be on the media scratch drive.
As I am typing my question it occurs to me that I might be better off using my previuos work flow for these large raw stills.  While it would be nice not to have duplicate files ( one RAW and one JPEG ), FCP X might not be the best software for resizing raw stills.  If I were contiuue with my older work flow where would the best place to put the converted and resized exports?

    BenB,
    Thanks for sharing your results.
I did a quick test also.
I creatred a new project and droped a clip in that was a 1920 x1080 29.97 fps AIC. ( It's AIc because it was on the media drive via a FCE lOg and transfer).  So by my understanding my project is now 1920 x 1080 i 29.97 fps.  I brought in 2 stills form the browser under Aperture.  One was a 5616x3744 RAW picture the second one was a 3680 x 2070 JPEG ( a still from a video camera ).
In both cases the Background wheel was gray for a few seconds and then went to green, so some work was being done to the stills.
Clicking on the info button while the still was selected showed that the JPEG still was now a 1840 x 1035/60 fps JPEG.
    The RAW still became a 2808 x 1872 /60 fps JPEG.
I am somewhat surprised at the dimensions of the stills and really surprised that they are 60 fps !
    Whats up with that ?
FCP X seemed to handle resizing the RAW stills very quickly, now a whoe batch of them might be more noticeable.  I haven't tried applying any effects or exporting them to see what they might look like.  I may try that later.
If I can't find my versions of Aperture stills in the browser I guess I will use my old work flow and export the versions to a folder on the media drive.  Then import them.

  • Stills crashing FCP

I am working in a FCP 1080i project and there's a section of the story which calls for a seq of rapid stills. FCP however is having trouble processing them and the system keeps crashing. The still frames themselves are around 2000 x 1331 72 dpi. Any ideas to help with the performance of this?

Seems also if I put all the stills on a timeline, my render bar changes from green to red about halfway down the timeline. Is there a way to change my settings to get more processing power on the timeline for these stills?

  • Clarity of digital file STILLS in FCP

I have a 720x480 DV NTSC project in FCP 6.
I recently read a tutorial that said to use the following specs when importing digital still files to this type project:
    Video Image - 720x480
    Single-Layer Graphic (Tif/Png) - 720x540
    Multi-Layered Graphic (PSD) - 720x480
So here is my problem... when I place a multilayered PSD file, it looks fine in FCP at 100%, but when I export the finished movie the stills look slightly jagged. When I rework the same stills and save them as a 720x540 Tif and reimport them to FCP, they look fuzzy in FCP but look much better in the final export (although very slightly distorted).
So what am I doing wrong?

Send us a link to that tutorial. It doesn't sound right. Your stills can be any size - the bigger the better. If you scale a 720x540 (or any) graphic past 100% it's going to look soft.
The other thing about working with graphics - don't trust what you see in the viewer and canvas, especially with an unrendered timeline. You can only judge the image quality on an external monitor.
There are countless articles and tutorials out there about preparing and working with stills in FCP. FInd a better one!
    Best of luck.

  • Disconnect Large Aperture Library from FCP X

    Hi,
I have a large Aperture library of over 200 gigs that takes over 10 minutes to load when I start FCP X.  I'd like to disconnect Aperture altogether from FCP X and then just save the few jpgs I need, when I need them to a folder that I can then pull the photos from.  How can I do that?
    Thanks,
    Don

I experienced the exact same problem. I have a iPhoto Library in another volume (or partition) with very small free space, while main/system partition (Macintosh HD) has big enough free space.
Turned out, the one that should have big free space is the volume/partition that contains original iPhoto Library (to import from), not the system partition. So, I freed up some space, reopen Photos app (while holding Alt key), and select the iPhoto Library to import. It works!

  • I use FCP 7 Studio on an iMac with Snow Leopard.  If I upgrade to Lion so I can use iCloud, can I still use FCP 7?

I use FCP 7 Studio on an iMac with Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  If I upgrade to Lion so I can use iCloud, can I still use FCP 7?

Thanks X!  I use Office 2011 as this iMac is only a year old.  I don't have Rosetta (is it an add-on?) at least, I've never seen it... so... you're saying I could upgrade to Lion with no ill effect to my FCP7 Studio and all it's files and my saved projects?

  • NEED HELP FAST!! Importing stills into FCP 6

    Hello everyone,
I have tried searching for a bit, but time is of the absolute essence. I am down to the wire on a project, and need to do some finishing things.
What I need to do is to import still images (from DSLR) into an HD timeline. I am working in an HDV 1080i60 sequence at 29.97 fps. Here is what I am doing...
    - Import the particular image
    - Everything looks fine in the viewer when I double click on it
    - When I take it to the timeline though and open it in the canvas, it looks like absolute sh**. The colors look fine I suppose, but it looks incredibly pixelated.
I have tried exporting the video, thinking that it might just be in the canvas, but that didn't fix anything.
So, it is not a problem with rendering, as some have said where I have searched... It could be a problem with size, but I am not sure.
If anyone knows anything, please post in here or PM me asap. Thank you for your help in advance.
    Cheers,
    Ryan

When you load an image or clip from the Browser into the Viewer, it is displayed at it's native resolution. But once you place it in the Timeline, it displays at the FCP Sequence resolution. Also note that the image will need to be rendered FULLY before viewing. Go to the Sequence->Render menus and make sure all render types are checked ... especially FULL.
Also keep in mind that FCP's Canvas window only shows a proxy of full quality.

  • Is there a way to transfer video from Aperture 3 to FCP 7?

When i first recieved my SLR i transferred all my video to aperture 3, thinking it'd be easy to connect it to FCP 7...while it is, i realize the codec differences/it lagging when i try to edit the footage. it's frustrating! I've since realized that Logging and Transferring is the way to go, editing is a lot smoother that way.
Is there any way I can get those video from aperture (v3) to Final Cut Pro 7? I don't have the original files anymore so the ones in the Aperture Library is all i've got left!
    please help!

Not within iTunes, no. You'd need to use other software to do that (QT Pro, for example).

  • RAW Photos from Canon EOS 7d imported into Aperture still not working...

I have just purchased a new macbook pro with the most current operating system and have updated Aperture 2 to the most current version and my Canon EOS 7d RAW files are still showing up with a red box message "Unsupported File Format"......WHY ISN'T IT WORKING?! I've been waiting for months for this to work and finally they say it will work with the update and it it doesn't. And I read about the "~" issue and I checked and don't have that condition in any of my folders. PLEASE HELP!

In addition to the above comments, make sure you have run "Software Update" (if you're new to the Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner then select "Sofwtare Update..." from the pull-down menu).
The EOS 7D, being rather new, requires that you have +Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.7+ installed. This is an update to Mac OS X (not an update to Aperture.)
If unsure, open "System Preferences" -> "Software Update" -> "Installed Software" and view the list of updates to ensure that you specifically have that update already installed.

  • How to keep quality of stills in FCP?

    Hi guys
I´m a cameraman not an editor and have a few questions for you.
I have a project coming up where we will do the whole film as a series of stills.
The stills will be shot using a Canon digital SLR camera, then imported to FC
Now, is it a way to import these stills and work with them, make an edit and be able to export the final film either to HD tape or 35mm print with out the stills loosing quality?
I guess it might be a way to work with proxy copies of the stills, then when the edit is finished, somehow replace them with the originals?
Could I even do this in FCE, or is Pro needed?
    Any input is welcomed

make an edit and be able to export the final film either to HD tape or 35mm print with out the stills loosing quality?< </div>
    The whole thing?
I'd use After Effects at 4k resolution and work closely with your transfer house's engineers BEFORE you start the project. Get their specs and work backwards from there.
FCP could be where you assemble the project's movies form other applications but your moves and effects should be composited in software designed for the job. FCP's motion editing interface is impossibly lame and the rendering capabilities are inappropriately coarse for hi-rez motion graphics.
FCP will handle the editorial and assembly/output tasks easily and can be used with low to medium rez proxies for rough editing. Substituting out your proxies for your high res images and high rez movies can be tricky in FCP so build lots of time into your schedule to get it right.
BTW, there's nothing new about these production techniques. I don't know where else you're looking but there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of blogs and production reports on rostrum camera production technique, including stuff by that Kent Burned guy.

  • Some Aperture stills not appearing in iMovie 11 Media Browser

    Hello all,
I have been importing images into Aperture for a while now and just realized that iMovie (09 and 11) are not reading some of the stills I have stored in it. I have made sure that all my images are stored in an Aperture managed library and not as reference files. When I start up iMovie it takes a while and scans for new videos but I'm concerned with the stills that are not appearing. I can see the project and album titles appearing in the Media Browser but iMovie states that there are no files inside. I've also told Aperture to always share previews with iLife and iWork. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forums.
The fact that you are able to see the Ap library and the project suggests that there maybe no previews available for that project.
At the top of the Library tab is a little cog, within here is an option for previews, also in the Ap preferences is another option for creating previews, check that these are set correctly.

  • Aperture stills importing to DVD Studio Pro

apart from loading all my aperture library into iPhoto (and that generates loads of extra files on the drive), is there a way to import stills from Aperture into DVD Studio Pro? There seems to be an iphoto or a file browser input but nothing from Aperture. Any ideas folks?

Have you tried dragging the folder of stills from the finder into the DVDSP assets tab?

  • Aperture, iPhoto, Mail, FCP X, Motion and Compressor suddenly kaput!

Yesterday I discovered that Aperture and iPhoto, which I hadn't used for several weeks, were refusing to open and throwing up an error message saying there was a "problem and they probably weren't compatible with this version of the  operating system etc."
Shortly after, I discovered that Mail and the latest versions of FCP X, Compressor and Motion were also disabled.
After searching the internet/forums it appeared that this problem (with Aperture) could be caused by installing FCE 4, which I had done a week earlier and the only cure was to reinstall the OS.
I deleted FCE 4 and went through all the usual troubleshooting strategies to no avail so I reinstalled OS X 10.8.5 which which took less than an hour and luckily appears to have cured the problem. (I had been dreading reinstalling the OS  as I mistakenly assumed it would wipe all the apps and folders off my Mac ......... but of course it didn't.)
So has anyone had a similar experience or can shed any light on this?
Now I have to decide whether I dare reinstall FCE 4 ...........

Quite a few bug fixes, like the text position bug in Lion has been fixed.
Here's some from Tim Payton on the COW
    - During Playback, zooming the timeline with the keyboard doesn't send you to the end of the timeline
    - Scale controls on timeline now update live
    - Synchronize Clips now works if you have multiple non overlapping video clips for a single audio clip. (huge!)
    - Preroll and Post Roll settings in preferences work.
    - HDV Footage with "better performance" doesn't look nearly as bad. Way less flashing.
    - Timeline feels much snappier.
    - Timeline index now includes sortable columns: name, roles, & notes, and you can edit the values! (huge!)
    - Zooming on the timeline now really centers on the playhead if skimming off, skimmer if skimming on
    - Inspector updates more consistently to the clip selected.
    - Startup is much faster.

  • Gimp Newbie Needs Basic Instructions in Formatting Stills for FCP

Sorry if this is redundant or too basic for the forum, but I'm new to Gimp (and honestly, photo editing in general) and need some basics. Tutorials, links, etc appreciated.
My question... In Photoshop, I can select a pixel aspect ratio that gives me the option of DV, widescreen, anamorphic, and others. Is there a similar feature in Gimp? If not, is there a process that you are using to prepare high resolution still photos for importing into FCP?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    *** is Gimp?
Anyway, I don't prepare hi-res, medium-res or even low-res photos for FCP. I import them and drop 'em on the Timeline (FCP will automatically scale them to Sequence and correct pixel aspect). Once I have them in FCP I can see how they look on an external TV monitor. After viewing them there, if they need any PS adjustments, I right-click on it in the Timeline and choose "Open in Editor" (Photoshop is set as my default still image editor in FCP preferences).
If adjustments are needed, it's typically rotation, contrast*, color balance*, fixing areas of the image that might cause morie patterns on a TV, etc. When I'm done in PS, I save the changes and close the image and jump back over to FCP where the changes were automatically updated to the image on the Timeline.

    * = can also be done right in FCP with the 3-Way Color Corrector

  • Making a still from FCP video

I need to make a still (JPEG, tiff, ...) from a frame of my video on FCP so I can put it in a Word doc afterwards.
    How do I proceed?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Place you playhead over the frame you want to create your still from, hit shift N and then export (using quicktime conversion) . Choose still image from the format menu and under options choose you prefered format, JPEG TIFF etc.
