Aperture stops responding when adding another iPhoto library

I bought Aperture so that I could merge/add my wife's laptop iphoto library with her iMac Iphoto library.  I have read all the forums and tried to make sure that everything was good to go for this process.  When I try the process Aperture just stops responding every time.  I have plenty of hard drive space, plenty of ram. check the librarys with the library first aid apps, everything!!  I am mad because this shouldn't be difficult.  Can anyone help.

How many photos and how long did you leave it before you decided it had stopped responding?
I was testing a theroy last week and did an import for 18,000 images, but with each image going to it's project so Aperture needed to create 18,000 projects for the import.
It stopped responding and to all intents it looked like it had died. But in Activity Monitor I kept an eye on how much memory was being used and noticed this was still changing over time so I let Aperture continue (even though it wasn't responding).
After about 4 hours, it crashed with a message saying it had caused the virtual mempory page file to 40+ GB which OS X decided was excessive and force quite Aperture. The point being, for those 4 hours when it appeared to have died, it was actually still working away.
So, first I'd recommend running the process overnight to give it enough time to finish or really die. If it really wont finish, it may be related to the Aperture/Mavericks memory leaks problems that have been reported here recently.
If you are not in a hurry, you could wait for Apple to stabilise the combination and see if it then works.
Alternatively, it you want to get it done quickly, here's what I'd try:
Which ever library you want to import, back it up and then open it directly in Aperture.
Organise the projects (what were events in iPhotos) into folders, say one folder for each year. So for example you now have a 2011 folder containing all your 2011 events (projects). CTRL + Click the 2011 folder and choose "Export->Folder As New Library". This will create a new library containing just the 2011 events.
Now, back in the main library tell Aperture to import this 2011 library and see if it handles the smaller (and Aperture created) library any better. If it does, you can go to the other library and repeat for each year of photos.
If it still doesn't, I try creating a brand new library in Aperture (File->Switch to libray->Other/New) and try importing the 2011 library into that.
Essentially you are trying two things with this approach. First, to see if smaller libraries import successfully. Second, to see if the import is successful when you import an Aperture created library into an Aperture created library (rather than an iPhoto created library into an iPhoto created library)

  • Itunes stops responding when adding music

I have an iPod classic (I think 5th gen) it had worked great for a long time and then a few weeks ago it just froze. After it froze I forced restarted it and all my music was gone. Now I am trying to add all my music and everytime to go to do it (whether on mac or pc) a few files will load and then itunes will freeze and stop responding. I am running itunes 10.6.1 on my pc and 11 on my mac and I have restored the ipod a couple times but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I would love any advice or help because this is extremely frustrating. Thanks

    CORRECTION:
my iPod is the IPOD CLASSIC not 5th gen

  • Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I have iPhoto 11 on my macbook. I want to export photos to another iPhoto library on an external hard drive. How can I do this.

I have run out of space on my internal hard drive on my macbook and I want to create another iPhoto library on an external hard drive using most of the photographs already on the hard drive.
I did this easily on an old G4 mac and an old version of iphoto. I simply imported the photographs from the library already on the hard drive to the new library I created on the external hard drive.
It does not seem to be possible to do the same thing using iPhoto 11.
I have no idea where to find the files on the mac to do it the more direct way by just importing the files.
    Any ideas?

Here's one way to do what you want:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them:  Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
    A couple of comments:
    a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.
c: Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

  • Thunderbird stops "responding" when I try to enter a password why? this is new today.

As of this afternoon Thunderbird stops responding when I attempt to enter a password. The accounts have been working for years with thunderbird until today. I can open thunderbird in "safe" mode but that is not useful since plugins are disabled.

I ended up removing v 1.0.1 of "Provider for Google Calendar" plugin; installing v 0.25, then re-setup the Google calendar
These instructions are where I found the different location link to use while setting up the calendar in thunderbird/lightning.
    https://sites.google.com/a/tc.columbia.edu/tcapps2/home/how-to/accessing-email-and-calendar-with-thunderbird
The gmail calendar location prior to today was linked to a "googleapi://... .../?calendar=email address... etc." link.
After I added the new gmail calendar to thunderbird the location link is to "https://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/... etc."

  • ITunes stops responding when I plug in my iPod.  I have updated iTunes to latest version, still crashes.  OS is Vista.

iTunes stops responding when I plug in my iPod.  I have updated iTunes to latest version, still crashes.  OS is Vista. How do I fix this?

    Hm... Strange.
    I had reset the iPhone.
I tried disabling the auto-launch of iPhoto, and...
...when I plugged iPhone in, it started to freeze iTunes, but after a minute or so, the iPhone started synching. I found this odd because I had disabled auto-sync (I press Sync in iTunes when I want to have it Sync).
Now, of course, I do want auto-launch of iPhoto back on, since I like it for when I attach my digital cameras. I hope that when I set it back, it won't re-introduce the problem.
The restart I did may have helped. I resist restarting because my wife's account is often open and she frequently leaves unsaved files up, so it is a pain to respectfully close out her work and then restart.

  • Safari stops responding when I try to bookmark (and other slow problems!)

Two weeks ago my logicboard died, so I sent my ibook out to Apple for it to be fixed. Ever since I got it back this past Tuesday, my Safari has been extremely slow, but nothing else is wrong with my computer. Here are the problems:
    - The biggest issue is that Safari stops responding when I try to make a bookmark. The popup appears to select the bookmark's destination and to enter the name, but when you hit ok, the rainbow wheel comes up and it stops responding, so I have to reset Safari, and now I can't make new bookmarks at all.
    - It lags when it tries to open new windows, especially new tabs.
    - If a new page loads that scrolls at all, and then I try to scroll down, the wheel appears for several seconds until it can load the rest of the page. It's as though it gets stuck before it can scroll.
    - Sometimes when typing, it will also start to lag behind my typing speed, or if I try to click on a new field, it will not immediately allow me to type on occasion.
All these things have never happened before I sent it out. I have reset my cache, and I have tried entering the open DNS addresses in my networks, which has improved loading speed, but hasn't fixed any of these problems. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I can fix anything?

    Try verifying the hard disk.
Boot from your restore disk while holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo, then let go of the C key. You'll see an Installation window, select English. From the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab, then click Verify. If DU reports errors, click Repair. If Disk Utility cannot repair the disk you have several options. One is DiskWarrior or
TechToolPro If Disk Utility can repair any errors, go back to the Menu Bar, click Utilities/Startup Disk. In the Startup Disk window select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
If you don't have a restore disk, try booting into Safe Mode

  • Help. Photoshop CC14 on Mac 5k (2014) running Yosemite 10.10.1. Photoshop stops responding when I'm opening files, saving files or creating new ones. Is anyone suffering the same problem? Does anyone have an answer?

Help. Photoshop CC14 on Mac 5k (2014) running Yosemite 10.10.1. Photoshop stops responding when I'm opening files, saving files or creating new ones. Is anyone suffering the same problem? Does anyone have an answer?

First, go install the MacOS 10.10 updates - you should be on 10.10.2.
I haven't heard of Photoshop not responding during opens and saves.  Does it stop responding while the open/save dialogs are visible, or while Photoshop is actually reading or writing files?
10.10.1 did fix a crash in the open/save dialogs, but 10.10.2 still has some odd issues (mostly program errors coming from the OS code) in the open/save dialogs.

  • ITunes goes into (not responding) when tries to update library

How can i get my mac around this problem? iTunes goes into (not responding) when tries to update library

I just posted with the same question

  • After i upgrade to lion and updated logic pro to version 9.1.6 stops responding when loading "Ryu Chords" it stops responding, do anyone have any ideas what problem it can be?

After i upgrade to lion and updated logic pro to version 9.1.6 stops responding when loading "Ryu Chords" it stops responding on certain moment, i tried to reinstall freshly and update to version 9.1.5 but problem same so at this moment version is 9.1.6. I tried 64bit too but no changes. And the thing is that i need studio and i need to sort this problem quick.
Please everybody if you had same problem give me answer or any idea what to do
    Thanks

The sample rate is not 128 or so, you probably mean the buffer size...
But the performance drop makes sense: switching between a 64 bit process and 32 bit doesn't come free: it cost performance and creates a jitter, which also either shows as performance lost or instability.
You really have to move away from outdated 32 bit AudioUnits, sorry. Ask the vendors to finally release 64 bit versions, it has been several years since 64 bit is available.

  • Iphoto, navigating:  when navigating my iphoto library is there a short cut or hotkey that will take the cursor to the last photo (bottom of the library)?

iphoto, navigating:  when navigating my iphoto library is there a short cut or hotkey that will take the cursor to the last photo (bottom of the library)?

A list of all iPhoto '11 shortcuts is here:
Apple - Support - iPhoto - Keyboard Shortcuts
I don't know of any keyboard shortcut to jump to the last photo, but if you option click the end of the scrollbar in the film strip you will jump to the last photo in the film strip.

  • Exporting a Calendar and Photos to a another iPhoto library

    Hi,
I would like to export a calendar I made previously to another iPhoto library to continue working on it. Any ideas ?
    Thanks,
    Cedric
    (iPhoto from iLife'08, Leopard)

    Cedric
Unfortunately you cannot do this. A Calendar (or Book) is simply a listing in the iPhoto database file, and there is no way to export it to another Library. If you want to move it to another machine you will need to move the entire iPhoto Library.
It might be easier to move the pics you require to the iPhoto with the Calendar using iPhoto Library Manager
