APERTURE SUPPORT

as a new apple user,G5,2.3,and as a aperture user I am both surprized and troubled by the lack of support and the dead quiet of apple concerning aperture.the members of this forem are some of the most gifted computer users I have found on any form,my fear is that you are so gifted because apple gives very little support and you must find all the answers yourselves.Adobe has vidios to show how to use Lightroom and that program is only weeks old,I have been stuggling with aperture since it came out and I still cannot find any answers to when the program problems will be fixed.is apple always so separated from the people who buy their products?? thank you all for the answers you have tried to give in the absence of apples quiet..Michael

Hey, hey,
Thanks for the links to the Aperture review sites
I found this tidbit to be enlightening from Luminous-Landscape at the bottom:
Howdy,
I just read the review by Michael Reichmann titled "Apple's Aperture a non-review"
"in light of this generally negative commentary, that I provide full disclosure. I have been, and still am a beta tester for some Adobe products, including Camera Raw. Furthermore, Thomas Knoll, the original author of Photoshop, and creator of Camera Raw, is a friend, has attended several of my workshops, and we have been shooting together on several occasions. I also have a friendship with Kevin Raber, the US VP of Sales and Marketing for Phase One, the publishers of Capture One software."
That said, I found many falsehoods for example:
"Firstly, it appears to be designed for future Macs. If you have a typical 2004 / 2005 generation Mac you will find running Aperture to be an exercise in waiting."
Not true and misleading.
It runs super fast using an October 2004 2.5 GHz mac with a nVidia6800 card. Faster than anything Photoshop could ever do.
"Firstly, it appears to be designed for future Macs. If you have a typical 2004 / 2005 generation Mac you will find running Aperture to be an exercise in waiting."
Again, not true. See answer to first statement.
"another problem is font size. Maybe its me and my middle-aged eyes, but a couple of hours with Aperture makes me want to visit my optometrist to see if I need better glasses."
Doing a side by side comparison of both Photoshop & Aperture the palette fonts appear to be exactly the same size as Aperture project fonts and sometimes Photoshop fonts are smaller still. Again another misleading statement by Luminous-Landscape.
"One of the major complaints against Aperture, which I resoundingly echo, is that it is a unitary database program. By this I mean that it keeps all of its files and data in one huge database. This has several implications. The first is that your entire collection of raw files, completed files, versions etc, can not be larger than a single hard drive. This is simply unacceptable for a professional application."
I'm using the same size hard drive that I was using for my Photoshop files 400 GB HD but now with Aperture I am saving many many gigabytes of storage that Photoshop was using with it's multiple versions of the same image file. So in fact by using Aperture a user can save on hard drive space.
"Yes, I know that you can change to a different database, but what if you want to search for, compare and re-catalog files that reside on different disks? Can't do it. Bad. Really bad. Can you say "dumb design"?"
Aperture not only lets a user search multiple databases it does it much faster than Photoshop. The same exact databases or hard drives used for photoshop files can be indexed and searched in Aperture.
"I am very uncomfortable having my files living inside a large unitary database."
"Consequently Aperture really has little utility for cataloging images. Without the ability to catalog files outside of its own limited environment, photographers are forced to use other cataloging programs, and these are incapable of reaching inside Aperture to index its files. All in all a bad situation."
Another flat out lie. Aperture can access any metadata and has presets from IPTC & EXIf protocol which is an industry standard. It has very robust metadata & cataloging features.
"I've left the question of raw editing till last. I have to say that I'm not overly impressed. Both Camera Raw and Capture One do a much better job in almost every regard, and faster to. It will also be unusual for any photographer to be happy with the overall level and variety of image control offered by Aperture, and therefore a trip to Photoshop will be necessary."
No data is given to back this statement up. We are left with believing Mr. Reichmann's already misleading statements.
"Apple makes this fairly easy on the way out, but problematic on the way back because Aperture doesn't understand Photoshop's layers."
Again, another fabricated lie.
Aperture can manage photoshop layers very well and maintains their stucture. All one has to do is select External Editor from Aperture and make the edits in Photoshop, the layers are preserved for future edits.
"(Layers on files coming back into Aperture from Photoshop are flattened, though if you re-export they are still there)."
Not true at all. See answer above.
"the Photoshoped file needs to reside inside the Aperture database for the whole system to make any sense without large numbers of multiple copies of files ending up all over the place."
Not true. Aperture makes 1 file that is edited in Photoshop, just 1 and it is placed in the Library not all over the place as Mr. Reichmann would have us to believe.
"Metadata and IPTC support is not very good, with no IPTC templates"
Not true.
"and also the inability to export complete metadata to other applications or import it properly."
Again, Mr. Reichmann does not know what he is talking about. All metadata is preserved on Aperture and is exportable.
"There are other flaws and gotcha's, almost too numerous to mention."
Name them. I'll be waiting.
In light of Mr. Reichmanns comments Luminous-Landscape has gone down several notches in my book.
love & peace,
victor

  • Does Aperture support deletion of multiple "unnamed" face tags?

Faces is a great feature.  I love it.
I have 40,000 pictures in iPhoto.  iPhoto currently does not have a way to select all "unnamed" face tags in a photo and remove them.  I have to click each separate "unnamed" face tag to delete it.  Because of the volume I am working with, without a global delete feature, I am looking at a 100-hour project (approximately 60,000 mouse clicks) to accomplish the deletion of all these "unnamed" face tags.
I was hoping that Aperture would offer this feature, since it is a Pro app.  I called Apple today and they told me that "No, Aperture does not have this feature, either."
Does anyone know if Aperture does have a way of doing this?  I tried to get an Apple Aperture support rep on the phone to think "outside the box" today on this, but he couldn't think of anything.
It just kills me that because I can't select multiple face tags in a photo and mass delete them with a single keystroke or click that I'm facing 100-200 hours worth of work, literally about 60,000 mouse clicks, in order to get rid of all my "unnamed" face tags.
Thanks for any ideas anyone might have.

Why is it worth 100 hours of your time to remove them?
(While I think_if_ there is a way to do what you want.)

  • Can't access Aperture support forum

Hi all, not sure whether this is the right place to report a problem with the Aperture Support forum - I couldn't find anywhere to report the problem so posted here. When I try to enter it I get the following error message
    "Unsupported Browser detected.
Announcement: Apple Support Communities has discontinued support for your current browser.
In order to provide the best platform for continued innovation, Apple Support Communities suggests using the latest version of Safari."
I am using Safari Version 7.1 (9537.85.10.17.1) and I can access the other forums without any problem.
    Thanks in advance

I just got this too, on Firefox, in Private Browsing mode. I was trying to access How to remove Adware? when it redirected to the same page as fleetwood reported. I've attached a screenshot. I'm using Firefox 33.0 on Mavericks 10.9.5. I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this either.
UPDATE: The link works fine now.

  • Does Aperture support the use of Filters or Brushes?

I want to be able to have more control over the final print versions of my photos using Aperture (instead of having to spend hundreds on the latest Photoshop)... Does Aperture support any type of filtering or brushwork? Any freeware out there that dovetails with Aperture?

    Steve Weller wrote:
    No, but...
I poked around inside Aperture a while ago and there are some icons and other images that suggest it is coming one day. My guess is that there is insufficient hardware or OS support for it right now and so it ha not been enabled.
And if you look in the .plist file you'll see preferences for "brushes" labeled Dodge, Burn, Saturate, Desaturate, Warmer and Cooler. Brushes also appear to have Size, Softness and Strength attributes - does this indicate future drawing pad support??!!

  • Aperture support of CANON EOS 350D?

Could you please tell if Aperture supports CANON EOS 350D.
Please note that even if one would expect the CANON EOS 350D to be identical with the Digital Rebel XT they *are not* identical with regard to the latest I-Photo. I can't load photos in RAW format from CANON EOS 350D to the latest version of i-Photo even if you can do it with the US Canon
Digital Rebel XT! So, please tell me if I can take photos in RAW-format from my CANON EOS 350D to Aperture which I intend to buy if it is compatible. When is i-photo going to support raw format in CANON EOS 350D?
    Thanks!
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi,
I just came back from a Aperture seminar and I asked one of the Aperture presenters whether there was support for the 350D or not. He couldn't give me a clear answer to that and he was not aware that there was an american version of the camera called Digital Rebel XT and a european version called 350D where the Digital Rebel XT is supported by Aperture.
He did however say that Apple would continue to implement more raw file formats in Aperture as Canon opened the raw files for Apple. His advice was to contact Canon with regards to the 350D raw files.

  • Does Aperture support DNG custom profiles (.dcp) ?

Hi, how can I do batch correct raw images ? Does Aperture support custom DNG profiles (.dcp) from
X-Rite Colore Checker Passport or Adobe DNG Profile Editor ?
Or instead can I assign color correction icc camera profile (input ? device ?)
For example, I have already prepared jpg image with desired colors ang raw image, I want match colors raw to jpg image. I'm not interested in presets, I prefer and I can do it via profiling in other raw converters. But it will be Aperture usable for me ?
    Many thanks for answer

I don´t have the camera nor Lightroom, so just for what it´s worth, this requirement stated for DNG files:
+DNG files must be generated by the Adobe DNG Converter with the “Convert to Linear Image” option turned off.+
Not sure if that helps you. I´m trying something alike from PSe7 on a Windows Vista laptop for the Panasonic LX3, without luck so far... ;(

  • Does Aperture support RAW files from a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ27 camera?

Please can anyone let me know whether Aperture supports RAW files from a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ27 camera? The Apple Aperture site lists support for DMC-F35 and other later cameras but does not allow a search for others.
    Many thanks.
    John

Only the cameras on this list are supported:  Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
    Th FZ27 is not.
For my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 I am using Adobe's free DNG Coverter to convert the RAW files to DNG. It does not always work, but for most of the RW2 files I can work in Aperture this way. The stubborn files I convert to TIFF.

  • When will Aperture support Fujifilm Xpro1 raw files??

Does anybody knows when will Aperture support Fujifilm Xpro1 raw files?? It have been pendning for a while already, really hope there will be an update soon. Thanks.

I firmly disencourage people to purchase Aperture these days.
To everyone asking me for advise as a Pro photographer.
Apple attitude on this issue is of abandonement and ignorance of users needs.
Unfortunately, the feeling is that this is going to be the permanent standard.
They are not providing translations, not providing support to models such as X-Pro1 that has received inmediate reaction from major developers, neither do care for users that openly claim for RAW support for an extended model as X-10.
This is somehow another sign of apple arrogance in term of market predominant coompany.
If Apple do not begin to lose sales and an importan market share this is going to be worse and worse.
    Best way: Ignore Aperture.
Adobe is nowadays the ONLY option for photographers.
I don't like Lightroom so I must select my shots with Photo Mechanic, or Xnview and then go to photoshop.
    Sick of Apple.

  • Fuji x100 will aperture support this camera ?

Does anyone know if Aperture intends to support the new Fuji X 100, or if they don't what other tools are available to import the x100 raw files into Aperture ?

There's no way to know unfortunately.
what other tools are available to import the x100 raw files into Aperture ?
the X100 RAW files need to be converted in either RAW File Converter EX (which is bundled with the camera) or the free RAW Photo Processor. Needless to say it's a very cumbersome and clumsy process. So much so that I've gone back to shooting JPEG with this camera for the time being, which takes some getting used to.
I'll probably start shooting RAW+JPEG once I'm out of my testing phase in the hopes that Apple will eventually support it. I can't see myself integrating either of the apps I mentioned in my normal workflow, even if I'm not planning to use the X100 as a work camera.
    Fingers crossed for Aperture support.

  • HT4007 Does Aperture support Images and videos from the new 3D cameras?

Does Aperture support Images and videos from the new 3D cameras?

If the camera is listed here OS X Lion: Supported digital camera RAW formats or here Mac OS X v10.6: Supported digital camera RAW formats then the raw image file is supported by Aperture.
If the camera is not listed then as Keith wrote if it produces JPG's they can be imported into Aperture.
If you told us what camera you were interested in it might help.
