Aperture thinks a project has offline referenced masters - but it doesn't!

I've just been consolidating two Aperture libraries by exporting projects from one library and importing them into another. For the most part this has gone smoothly, but in one project all the images have the little badge with the red slash through it, to indicate that the referenced masters are offline.
But they're not! The project itself is 2.2 GB - so all the photos are actually in it - and when I click 'consolidate masters' for that project, Aperture tells me there are no referenced masters for this project. For every image that's missing a master (if that makes sense) there's a version that's NOT missing a master. So the data's there and I can work with the image - I'm just a bit worried about making radical moves without knowing exactly what's going on
I've tried deleting the project and reimporting it, but to no avail - also, when I delete the project, it tells me referenced masters are offline and can't be moved to the trash.

If you can find such a thing.  I really doubt that exists since USB is a data connector not a video connector.

  • IWeb has published my Podcast - but iTunes doesn't show the updated feed

I created three new Podcast episodes today, which all work fine and are published to .Mac like a dream...
The first one was picked up by iTunes and downloaded as I've subscribed to my own feed. As you do. The last two are not showing on iTunes at all...
In fact I realised on closer inspection that only five of the twelve Podcasts are in iTunes. Any ideas why?
Interestingly, the iWed icon in the application bar has "2" in a red circle in a "you've got two waiting to be published" kinda way. But all the pages are blue and I have published all pages to .Mac. Honest.
I'm no RSS geek, so any help greatly appreciated!

  • Nano has Music on it, but ITunes doesn't show it!

    Hi,
When I connect my nano to my PC & it appears in ITunes without any problems. But when I actually select the Nano to see what songs I have on it, nothing displays.
ITunes just says theres so much spaced used and so much free. Then when I try and use my nano, theres no longer any songs or playlists or songs etc on it, when there was lastnight. But the space is still taken up & if you look at the nano as a disk the songs are their.
I have restored my IPod in the past and I'm sick of having to do this everytime I plug my nano in to my PC to charge it etc.
(also is there any specific way I should connect my nano to my PC? Nano already turned on 1st or not etc?)
Thank-you in advance for any assitance you can provide.
    Cheers

  • Freeing up laptop HD - referenced masters

I'm working with a large project of my India trip as a I travel. I have it sub-divided into albums based on different places I've visited as I visit them (chronologically).
I'm working on my laptop so space is limited and I now want to delete some of the initial referenced masters and externally edited versions. Is relocate masters the correct way to do this? And what about relocating externally edited versions? As I'm on a slow system, I still use PS for editing.
I backup my entire system to two external FW drives using CCC. So I already have 'relocated masters' on external storage. So all I really want to do is delete the masters/externally edited files on my laptop but I don't want to cause a break in Aperture's links. Is there a way to take advantage of these external drive files in the whole relocating/reconnecting process? Or do I need to relocate separately?
One possible solution I can think of: Would moving the referenced masters and externally edited images to the trash and then use Manage Referenced Files to point the broken links to the equivalent images in one of my external drives be sensible? And what about the other backup drive? If the external drive whose images the aplibrary now links to failed, could I then use Manage Referenced Files to restore the path to the other backups on my second external drive?
    Thanks for any help,
    Ross

I think you're saying you've got the images both on your internal drive as managed and on external storage. You want to delete the managed images on your internal drive, and use the images on the external drives. If I have that right, and assuming you've made all the adjustments to the images that are managed, and wish to keep those adjustments, then your best bet is to actually delete the images on the external drive then relocate your masters from your library to the external drive. That way you'll get them off your internal HD, keep all your current adjustments, and eliminate duplicates.
As I reread your post I'm not positive I understand what you're trying to do. You can delete referenced images from within Aperture and check the box to delete the masters. This will move your images no matter where they are to the trash. If you've then got them someplace else, edited with PS, you can import those.

  • Referenced Masters on network

It appears that Aperture 3 broke support for storing Referenced Masters on an NFS share. My library is stored on the regular HFS+ drive used to boot the Mac, and in Aperture 2 I had no problems storing Referenced Masters on NFS. This allowed them to be automatically backed up when the file server did it's nightly backup.
As anyone else seen this issue, and if so, any chance you have a solution? Without this being fixed Aperture 3 is completely useless to me.

    Re iPhoto on a NAS:
    Still trying to solve this.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. Simply a NAS is not a suitable home for an iPhoto Library.
Workaround: Make a dmg formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and put the Library on that and store it on the NAS.
I think I have to mirror the iTunes solution above,
This involves having iPhoto reference the files on the NAS with the Library on your internal HD or some other volume. I strongly suggest that you don't do that. Unlike Aperture, iPhoto has no tools to reconnect with lost masters (Originals in iPhoto) so should anything go wrong you'll find yourself re-connecting each individual photo in the Library with its Original +one by one+.
but figure out which folders to move
You would need to recreate your Library as a Referenced Library.

  • Aperture thinks "Images Offline"

After installing Leopard and a second hard drive, Aperture thinks some of my projects are "Offline".
I did not rename, or edit my reference files outside of Aperture. The only thing that has changed was adding a second hard drive and installing Leopard. Before installing Leopard, I did use SuperDuper to clone my drive, and did a clean install of Leopard. But, the reference files and Aperture library were copied back to the original drive.
I have reconnected the masters through "Manage Reference Files", and everything seems to work fine. Restarted the computer and the files show "Online". Once I import new files into Aperture, the projects that I had fixed and reconnected, go back to "Offline".
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Found a faster way. Just went to manage referenced files and told Ap to reconnect the files on the "off-line" boot drive to the ones on the (actual) on-line boot drive--the same drive. It did it, and seems to remember.

  • How can I tell whether a project has managed or referenced images

    Hi all,
    Another noob question.
I started working with Aperture and imported about 20GB of photos from my hard drive into one big project. But I can't remember whether I imported them as managed or referenced images. I want to clean up my drive and delete one set of these if they're duplicates.
Is there an easy way to determing if the images in the Library are managed or referenced? I've looked all over for an answer, but can't find one.
    Thank you!

The "badges" in the lower right corner of each image will tell you if the image is a "referenced" image.
See this page for an explanation of the badges: http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=11%26se ction=9%26tasks=true
The badge icon will either be a small rectangle (which represents your photo) with an arrow (indicating that the real photo is elsewhere -- aka "referenced", or it will the rectangle will have a red slash through it, meaning it's a referenced image but the master is currently offline.
There's a third possible icon... which is yellow warning triangle (has a "!" in it) with the arrow. This means the referenced master was not found (e.g. the Mac can find the filesystem & folder, but your image is not there.) This means someone decided to delete or move images in the filesystem -- bypassing Aperture.
On a related note... it is possible to change your mind about whether you want images to be "referenced" vs. "managed". The "Aperture" -> "File" -> "Relocate Master..." will allow you to pick a folder on the hard drive and Aperture will copy the masters to that location -- converting a "managed" image into a "referenced" image. The "Aperture" -> "File" -> "Consolidate Master..." will do the opposite... it will convert a referenced image to a managed image, but does offer the choice of whether the "copy" vs. "move" (e.g. do you want to leave a copy of the image out in the filesystem which is no longer associated with Aperture vs. have the only copy of the master living inside the Aperture library.)

  • Aperture Thinks Files Are Neither Referenced Nor Managed

I've got a handful of files (fortunately, just a handful) that I can't relocate because Aperture says the masters cannot be located: "The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again." Well, that's wrong, because the files should be managed. But if I go to Manage Referenced Files . . ., Aperture tells me the selection contains no referenced files. So what gives? How can I rectify this?

Thanks, RB. I took one of these orphaned files and deleted the master and versions (I could have lived without the image). Aperture told me it couldn't delete it, because the master could not be found. I clicked continue, and the master ended up in the trash. I just re-imported it and moved on. I think I lost some of the metadata, but I'm not certain and it wasn't a huge problem. I did this with the other files that Aperture thought were neither managed nor referenced, with the same result.
I can't recommend that anyone else try this, because I'm not sure why it worked, but it did work.
PS -- Nice piece on saving a project.

  • Aperture 3 Referenced Masters on a Network Drive

I purchased a Synology Disk Station as my network attached storage solution. I was hoping to have my iTunes media and my Aperture referenced masters on the RAID-enabled network drives. I have had nothing but trouble with iTunes referencing media (extremely slow) so I gave up. Now I am attempting to relocate the Aperture masters to the network drive. According to this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252 I should definitely not be moving my images to the network drive, as the drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended, but the Synology Disk Station volumes must be formatted as FAT32. Meanwhile, I did try to relocate some images. One problem I have is that if another user logs in to my iMac before me and mounts the network volume named Sally, when I log in and mount the network volume, the volume name is not the same, it is Sally-1, and Aperture cannot find the referenced masters! I imagine this would happen with any network drive when multiple users are logged into the Imac.
It seems like I have a gigantic network brick that I may be able to use as a glorified Time Machine backup drive, or is there something I can do about this? How does one have networked Mac OS drives? Connecting a drive to an Airport Extreme the only way?
