Aperture thinks missing images are duplicates

I am running Aperture 3.4.3 on Mountain Lion on a 17" Macbook Pro.
Aperture crashed while importing pictures from an SD card.  When I try to start the import again I have the following problems:
When 'Do not import duplicates' is checked.  It will not list the pictures that previously attempted an import but are not in the library.
When 'Do not import duplicates' is unchecked, I see all the pictures on the card (including those that are missing).
I do not want to import all pictures and then go through the library to figure out which ones are copies and manually remove them.  There are hundreds of pictures on the card.
I have tried holding command-option and have rebuilt both the database and the library.  This does not change anything.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The partially imported images must be somewhere in the Aperture library. Have you looked into the Aperture Trash or checked if they are somewhere in a "Recovered Project"?

  • How do I find out where iTunes thinks missing files are?

I have several hundred "missing" files in my iTunes library but they are all actually on the computer. But I don't remember where the were previously. I add dozens of songs at a time to my library all the time and there is no Earthly way for me to constantly remember where they were before. I don't just want to reimport the files because I have several hundred playlists with these files and it would be completely stupid to edit them all one at a time when all I need to do is to move them back to where iTunes thinks they should be. So where is that? The Windows media player has a column that displays file location. Why doesn't iTunes? (This is so stupid. It makes things -not just this- so much easier when you have the file location in the music list in your music player.)
Is there a way to find out where iTunes thinks the missing files should be at?

    Chris CA wrote:

The exclamation mark means ITunes doesn't think they are anywhere.
If you right click - get info on a song then view the Info tab, you will see where iTunes last used it from.
I'm not a newbie. I know quite a lot about iTunes. You sound like you don't though because if you did you would know that this is not true. If you "right click - get info on a song" (pressing cancel to the Locate popup) "then view the SUMMARY (not info) tab" you will see "Not Available" where the file location usually is. I wouldn't have asked this question if I hadn't gone through the steps already.
Thanks for trying though. Next time, please try the advice before you give it.
I add dozens of songs at a time to my library all the time and there is no Earthly way for me to constantly remember where they were before
You should not have to remember anything about where they were.
    I agree.
Are you always moving them around?
When I install a new hard drive. Yes. I generally keep everything organized and I let iTunes keep the folder organized but several years ago I used windows media player to organize my media.
Frankly I don't know HOW the recent songs/videos/etc. go missing. But some do. Maybe I accidentally move a folder without realizing it. Mistakes happen. Then I need to move it back but since I didn't know I did it in the first place I can't possibly be expected to remember where I moved it from.
Do you have iTunes prefs -> Advanced Keep ITunes music folder organized ticked and Copy files to iTunes ... ticked?
*OF COURSE!* Again, I'm not a newbie.
I have several hundred playlists with these files
Why would you have several hundred playlists?
I don't mean to sound rude but you sound like an Apple fanboy. Are you trying to tell me how I should use my own program? The answer to the question is I am a salsa instructor/DJ and I am constantly adding songs and videos to my library. Every month I have various salsa events, classes and performances that I do. I use my iPhone for the music. I need to maintain the playlists because students/teachers/studios/clubs/bars/churches/etc. call me back and want a repeat of the great salsa night I gave them a year ago. Naturally my playlists are highly organized into folders. So, I still have them and I need them.
Apple has its own ideas about how people should use its stuff but everyone is unique and our needs therefore are unique too. Apple doesn't realize this and still wants us to do things "the Apple way" even though "the Apple way" only works well for people who want their hand held through everything. This is why I say you sound like a fanboy. You don't know my situation and question if I need hundreds of playlists. I do.
I just need an answer to the question.
Thank you for your reply though. It gave me hope, for a time.

  • Aperture 2 Thinks Referenced Images are Offline with Network Home Directory

Aperture thinks my Home directory is offline, but it's not. My Home directory is on a Mac OS X Server on the LAN (i.e., not on the machine in front of me that I run Aperture 2 on). I'm able to import images from my Nikon D200 in RAW/NEF format using Aperture 2, and write them to my Network Home directory (again, on the Mac OS X Server across the LAN) with no problem. Images are added to Aperture Library as REFERENCED images. Actual image files and Aperture Library are within the Pictures folder in my Network Home directory (on the OS X Server across the LAN). Previews and images show up fine initially. However, after importing and quitting, the next launch of Aperture 2 shows those same imported/referenced images as being offline (i.e., alias badge with red strike-thru). No way to get Aperture 2 to recognize that these image files are really ONLINE, not off.
Tried to re-establish the link from Aperture to each image file using File->Manage Referenced Images..., but that corrupted something. Image becomes red slate with "Unsupported Image Format" message, and image preview goes blank/gray on next Aperture 2 launch.
Previous version of Aperture (v1.5.?) did not have this problem.

Thanks for the replies (in triplicate! from grommet). More information:
REFERENCED images that were imported earlier (using Aperture v1.5.x) show up ON-LINE in Aperture 2 (i.e., all is OK with the earlier images; referenced image badge has no red strike-thru).
The images that were imported more recently--all with Aperture 2--continue to show the referenced image badge with the red strike-thru, indicating Aperture thinks they're OFF-LINE (even though they're not). This makes it impossible to edit or use any of the more recent images that were imported with Aperture 2.
Here's the kicker: the more recent images imported with Aperture 2 and indicated as being OFF-LINE are stored in the SAME general file location as the earlier images that were imported with Aperture v1.5.x and are indicated as being ON-LINE!
My Home Directory is on a Mac OS X Server across the LAN.
    Aperture Library is at: ~/Pictures/
Earlier images are at: ~/Pictures/Digital Photos/Roll-000001/1999-05-26-0001.NEF
Recent images are at: ~/Pictures/Digital Photos/Roll-000107/2008-04-17-0001.NEF
Clearly a bug with Aperture 2. I've filed feedback with Apple. Hope to heck this bug is not overlooked in next incremental release. I'm stuck/dead in the water without a fix.

  • Aperture 3.03 - images are not automatically set to a GPS location

    Hi everyone!
First of all I have to apologize because I don't know the English terms for the Aperture functions, but I am using the German version.
I currently have a big problem by tagging my images automatically to a GPS track.
I can import the track from a GPS file generated with a Garmin eTrex H. I see the track - the purple line of the track. If I go over the line I see the date and time of the point i am over.
If I place an image over a point of the line, I am asked if the other images should be located too. If I answer to do so, just the image I placed is set to the GPS position. No other image! But this was working already some weeks ago!
I checked everything the date and time of the GPS, date and time of the images. But it still does not work.
Does anybody have an hint for me? Is there a problem with 3.03?
    Any help is welcome.
    Thanks a lot!
    Stefan.

    Hi villem!
Thanks a lot for the info! I think you are right. All tracks and images are done after the daylight saving time switch. I was used to use HoudahGeo for geotaggging before I was using A3. I updated HoudahGeo and it turns out, that everything was working fine.
I think the problem was, that the GPS turns to daylight saving time automatically but the camera wasn't. So there was two different time zones. I set the time in the camera now. I will see if this helps.
I also tired to set the time zone of the track in A3 but this didn't help! Is there any other workaround for this bug?
Thanks a lot for your help! I was trying this for days now!
    Stefan.

  • Dreamweaver thinks my images are in a folder

I've set up a site with many images in the root folder. When
I drag an image to the page (also in the root folder, not a

front of the filename as though the image is in a sub-folder. For
example, if the image is named picture.jpg the src box in the

Does anybody know why this is happening? It's really annoying
because I have to erase the slash for every image in order for the
image to display in the browser.

Your site definition is set to use root relative links. Don't

  • Images are missing in Project Manager

I’m replacing old images with new ones in RoboHelp HTML 10.
I’ve deleted the old pictures in Design view and pasted the new pictures in. (I know this is not the recommended way but with lake of time I found it to be the fastest way and we don’t feel the need to give the files described names at the moment.)
It has worked fine until now when I noticed that some images are not showing in Project Manager. I see the “folder” Images and I see a lot off images there but some are missing. The “missing” images are shown in Design view and in the browser after publishing. But in the report Unused files the “missing” images are listed as unused.
    I have tried to
    close and reopen the project,
    generate and publish the project,
delete an “missing” image from Design view and insert it by using Insert / Image. After saving this image, and some other “missing” images, are shown in Project Manager. But not all “missing” images.
Does anyone know why this is, or more important how to get Project Manager to show all images that are used in the project (without having to go through all 154 images trying to figure out which are used but “missing”)?
    Some more facts:
    They are all gif-images.
They are all stored at the top-level in the project folder. (Are there a limit how many images there can be in the top-level folder?  Should I create a separate folder and move the pictures there?)
    HTML-code for one “missing” image:
              <img src="image7.gif" alt="" style="border: none;"
                     border="0" />
    Grateful for any input!

I would have said "Try renaming the folder containing the images in Rh's Project Manager. That sometimes fixes the problem. You can revert to the old name afterwards."
Keeping all the images, and / or topics, in the root is never a good idea. It can slow things down and it's messy.
You can move the images you can see but obviously you cannot move the others. Try moving a topic that has one of the images to a different folder and see if that refreshes. Also try deleting the CPD file and reopening Rh.
    Backup first.

  • Aperture 3 does not recognize duplicates on Import

I was running an up to date version of Aperture 2 on all three of my machines. I upgraded the 17 MBP to Aperture 3. All updates applied, seems to function normally. I exported versions from an Aperture 2 machine in an attempt to consolidate my libraries. No file names had been changed. "Do not import duplicates" was selected. Aperture 3 wanted to import all files even though some were already present. I went back exported masters not versions, still saw all files being available for import.
Here is what the AP3 manual says:
"When you import images, Aperture automatically checks to see if any of the images are duplicates of previously imported images. Aperture checks the filename of the master to determine if an image is a duplicate of one in the library. Select the “Do not import duplicates” checkbox to prevent Aperture from importing duplicates. If this checkbox is unselected, Aperture imports all images, even if they are duplicates, and creates a new master with a different name for each duplicate. Aperture never overwrites or replaces a master that has already been imported."
So the question is, was the "filename" the same in AP2 and AP3. The Finder thinks that the picture file exported from AP2 is exactly the same as the picture file exported from AP3.
Therefore AP3 is not correctly identifying duplicates.

Is your Library on a FAT32 drive or network share?
It needs to be on an HFS+ drive, and should be locally mounted. Putting the library on a network is not a good idea, as the library needs lots of small block random read/write speed and doing this over TCPI/IP is slow.
However, you should be able to put the RAW referenced files on a network volume, and keep the library local.

  • Aperture 3 does not detect duplicate files on import

On import, AP3 still shows the same files I'm importing from my compact flash card that have already been imported. Raw files are coming from a Nikon D70. This also happens when I try to import photos from an SDHC card coming off from a Canon HFS10 camcorder.
The check mark to "not import duplicate" is checked, yet imported files still show up. I had this same problem before with Aperture 2 and I had to revert back to an older version of CameraRaw -- I believe 2.2 -- to fix the problem.
    Need help please.
    Thanks.

  • Mysterious missing images

    Hello,
I'm fighting a TERRIBLE problem with my Aperture library and I'd love to see if any of you might be able to help. I've got a library with about 40,500 images. All of them are referenced and I've moved through a couple of different storage drives over the years. I just ran a "manage referenced files" on my whole library and it shows that I have about 600 missing files, spread across three offline drives.
The problem with this is, I don't use those drives any more and I can't find where the missing images are!! I went through every project and did a search for missing images and no project shows a missing image. It only shows itself when I run "manage referenced files." I would just ignore this and use my library normally but it rears its ugly head in one other place: project exporting.
I tried to export a project with 556 masters to put on a laptop. The export gave me an error that some referenced files wouldn't be copied. Problem is, I ran a search for missing or offline referenced files and it returns Zero. I exported the project with the "consolidate referenced images feature" and imported it into my laptop. The 556 images are there, not managed and looking good. If I run a smart search for reference files it doesn't return any. BUT If I run "manage reference files" on the library on my laptop it shows four missing files! It's crazy, I have no clue what's going on.
rebuilt all of my libraries, I've looked at the image folders in the project and I can't figure out what's going on. Can anyone help?

No luck on the smart album, I tried it and it reports no missing images:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3289/24218107220895a27c5fo.png
I also tried the opposite and searched for online images and got 556, the correct number.
The problem occurs when I click on the library and run "manage referenced files", this is what I get:
    http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2107/242099628501416543c1o.png
The thing is, the 556 images in this library are ONLY managed - there shouldn't be any referenced images. If you notice, that screen shot shows a master file with the name IMG_1151, but if I run a smart search on the project for "1151" I get no results:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3050/242099643102bbf57fbfo.png
So there are four "phantom" images that are reported as in the library that don't really exists. So frustrating! I'd love your other ideas for how to squash this bug.

  • How would I merge two Aperture 3 Libraries together loosing duplicates

I came here looking for a solution to trying to manage photos on my mbp and desktop mac.
I do the heavy lifting of my Photo Library, including keywording on the desktop which was a G5 PowerMac with aperture 2 and had a 12" G4 Powerbook which i took out with me to store images on the road. SInce the G4 would not run Aperture I just transfered raw images over to the mac when home. Since then I upgraded the PB to a 13" MBP and upgraded it to Aperture 3 so with no sync i basically just loaded the images into the mbp and did some processing there and transferred most raw masters over to the G5 when home. Due to the recent large scale abandoning of the G5 in Apple software upgrades I have moved over to a Intel Mac Pro for the desktop and so both mahcines are now on Aperture 5.
I would prefer to share the library but it seems this is not possible so I will continue to use the MP as the workhorse and in order to do so will clear out the MBP library to simply act as a mobile mule for images. Before I delete the Photo Library on the MBP I want to try to import its contents into the MP. Most of the images should be duplicates and I only want to make sure any originals only on the MBP are saved to the MP. I do not want to import those files aready imported and am wondering if the library of Aperture wil lrecongise many of these images are duplicates and allow me not to import them or will I have to suck them all in then locate and delete duplicates ( I have more pressing things to do with my time) my MP library is about 300gb and the MBP is 75GB.
Any help with solutions to this wil lno doubt entitle the originator to a place in the heaven of their choice.. thanks and Merry Xmas and a happy new year to all those helping out here.
    thanks
PS just to avoid confusion i am running MP on 10.6 and MBP is on 10.8

I once had a problem where iTunes "forgot" about all my podcasts. I managed to fix this by simply dragging the downloaded podcast files into iTunes. It seemed to recognise them as being podcast files, and added a new subscription with those files in them.

  • OA_MEDIA images are not displayed after importing VO

My requirement is to add a custom check box to MES Operator page. In the process I extended CO, VO successfully and the check box functionality is working fine. But we found out that some images (coming from $OA_MEDIA) are not displayed. There are two image columns in the page. Images in one column are displayed while images in other aren't. Also what I have observed is, missing images are displayed until I run the VO import on server.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Can anyone please help me with this issue?

  • Why won't aperture arrange my images by name?

I loaded pics from my camera into Aperture and the images are all jumbled.  There is no order to them even though the previously loaded images (in the same library) are still in alphanumeric order (by name).

    What sorting have you chosen?

  • Aperture 2.1 thinks Managed files are missing

I'm hoping someone may be able to help with a nagging problem with my main Aperture library. I recently decided to store my images as referenced files on an external drive. The library currently contains somewhere over 7000 images. When I used the Relocate Masters command to move them out onto disk, it came back with a message that 350 or so (can't remember the exact figure) master images were not available and would not be relocated. After that, it successfully relocated all the other images to disk and these now correctly appear as "referenced" within Aperture apart from in one project.
In this one project, however, the 350 images are still appearing as "managed" and have not been moved out onto disk. If I try and relocate them, I'm told that the master images are missing or offline. However, if I look at the adjustment HUD, I have full editing functionality, implying that they are indeed available. Also, I've opened the package contents of the library and can see the raw files there.
In trying to troubleshoot this, I tried pulling one of the raw files out of the library package via the Finder. When I'd done that, all the adjustment tools were greyed out in AP for that particular image. When I put it back into the package, the tools were available again, so AP is definitely treating them as managed.
So I'm left with this one project where I can't move the raw files out and make them referenced. As it's only affecting one project, it's not a big deal, but it does mean that the library is quite a bit larger than it would otherwise be and as I want to put the library onto my MacBook, I want it to be as small as possible.
Anyone come across a similar situation? Any ideas on how to cure it? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I've had this happen too unfortunately. I'm not sure if this fix will work for you or even if you have tried it yet: Try force-reconnecting your masters. You may have to do this individually for a large lot of files or you may get lucky and the entire lot will reconnect with one attempt. My experience with this though is that the fix does not hold. Meaning, an computer restart, or a data base rebuild miffs it all up again.
I've just run into this problem too. I'm only dealing with about 250 problem images out of about 15,000, so I feel lucky compared to some of the other participants in this thread.
I'm not clear on what you mean by force-reconnecting. Can you remind me what this entails?

  • Error message when uploading book for printing. All images are jpg and rgb. Could they be too large to upload? What size is required and how do I reduce size in Aperture?

I receive an error message when I upload my book for printing. Not sure what the problem is. All my images are jpg and rgb. Could they be too large as it takes about 15minutes to upload to Apple. How do I reduce the size of the image in Aperture?

    Hi Leonie,
    Thanks for your reply.
Error message below. The preview is fine . I can discount the first 2messages as its a new computer so plenty of disk space and upload doesn't seem to be interrupted. I have uploaded to iphoto before. have tried to upload 3times with the same error message. I had to photo my slides with a Kaiser Baas photo maker , which apparently doesn't scan but takes photos in megapixels of the slides. I am wondering now if the format is incompatible though they are jpg files or the colour type wrong. The image files are  around 1-3 mb each and  72 ppi. I think  I will now scan them properly with a scanner to 300dpi anyway to improve quality.
Apple  talks about image files not being too big for uploading but gives no sizing of what too big is?
    Error message
    1. Upload Error. Loss of connection or file corruption during order upload may cause an incomplete order. Resubmitting your order usually resolves this issue.
    2. Low Disk Space. If your computer is running on low disk space, your files may be assembled incorrectly. Create more space by deleting unused files.
    3. Unreadable PDF file or image files. Files are sometimes assembled incorrectly due to CMYK or Grayscale color space. Use the RGB color space for best results.
