Aperture to delete images on CF card or camera?

Whenever I finish importing images from my CF cards into Aperture, Aperture asks if I want to erase the images from the card. Unless I want to keep the images on the card I normally agree to erase.
But thinking about this, is this really the best method or is better practice to let the camera delete the images and if so why? Or does it not make any difference.

As far as recovery programs are concerned formatting vs. erasing seems to be about the same. In fact one of the recovery programs I used recommended formating the card to recover the images. Go figure.
Everyone has their own system and precautions. Me... I download straight into Aperture on 2 different computers and have not had a problem with over 100k images. I never delete images from the card within Aperture. After downloading into Aperture I then backup Aperture before ever reformatting the cards, which I only do in the camera(s). I strictly use Canon cameras and have never had a problem cross using cards between different Canon SLRs, but with the cost (cheap) of cards I hardly ever move a card from camera to camera as I usually always have extra cards.

    Hi.
Have any of you been able to find a feature that deletes the imported images from the CF-card, so you don't have to manually delete images them from the CF-card.

There isn't at tis point. Consensus view it that it's best to delete/format in camera.

  • Image importing via card reader...

    Hello all,
When importing images via a card reader, I am no longer given the option to delete images on my card when Aperture is finished downloading? Is there some kind of option or preference I have inadvertenly clicked on or off? I really like my card empty upon completion of downloading.
    Thanks.

next time you have the import screen open, look for the tick box in the top right of the screen and make sure its checked.

  • Deleting images after importing

Aperture 2.0 won't delete images from the card after importing. I click the button to delete and eject, and then in the confirmation dialog again I click delete, but it quietly ejects the card with no errors and all of my images are still on it.
I'm using an 8GB SDHC card with a SanDisk USB reader. My camera is a Nikon D40x.

I'm getting frustrated (and somewhat annoyed) at the inability of Aperture 2.0 to delete images from a memory card.
Users that claim they don't get this option might like to set the "display alert when done" option in the Import panel. Once this is set, then the program displays an alert following successful import. There is the option to delete the imported images from the memory card.
The delete option worked flawlessly on versions 1.1 through to 1.5, but is now broken.
For reference, I'm using the new SanDisk Extreme IV Firewire (800) CF reader, and have been using a SanDisk Extreme III 4GB compact flash card.

    Help

usually when a file can not be deleted, it has to do with the file being used elsewhere, kind of a lock. This could happen if the same program that viewed the picture, then tries to delete, because that same program failed to unlock the file when it was done viewing it.
If all pictures are transfered to your computer and you don't want any images on the card anymore the best and the quickest way is to put the card back in the camera and select format card from its menu. Once you used the format a few times, its usually fairly fast to find it. But all camera are not the same, so I can't speak for all of them, if you know what I mean.

  • Vault Deleted Images?

    Greetings,
Is it safe to delete the folder Aperture Vault Deleted Images (or sub folders and files from that folder) from the external hard drive that my vault is on? There are a lot of deleted images in it that are taking up space.
    Thanks in advance - Scrags

    Yes.
They are moved to that folder as a safety precaution in the event you realize that you didn't intend to delete them.

  • Upload photos from iPhoto to CF card in camera

I'd like to upload phptos from my Powermac G4 to a compact flash card in my DSLR. My Mac recognizes the camera as a drive, and I can drag jpeg files into the camera drive, but they don't show up on the card in the camera. When I open the camera drive in the Mac, the photos are there, but not in the camera. Very frustrating. Cab anyone help?.

Sounds like an interesting solution, but I have no idea how to implement your suggestion. I'd certainly appreciate your help. By the way, I took someone elses suggestion of using a card reader. Tried this to no avail. Even though the reader put the images on the card, the camera didn't recognize that they were there.

  • Deleting images using iPhoto and a 128GB SD card and a Sony a6000

I am having a problem with deleting images after transfer to my mac using either iPhoto or Aperture (All newest version) under Yosemite 10.10.2. What happens is I can transfer images and video from the a6000 into my mac but when asked to delete and answering that it is okay to delete I run into an issue. When after deleting the images in iPhoto and looking at the a6000's stored images there are blanks that have the filenames but know images. I have to format the SD card to get them cleared off the SD card. I would say it is a bug. It happens in both iPhoto and Aperture. And this occurs regardless of if I use an SD USB reader or hook up the camera video USB. The bundled software called PlayMemories from Sony doesn't has a feature to delete the images off the camera. The a6000 is a newer model and I think the way Sony organizes things on the SD card is crazy but it would be nice to have the delete feature in iPhoto actually works like every other camera I've owned.

Yes but... you really don't want to use the iPhoto delete feature.
Never let your computer erase data without you first checking that the data is safe. Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then use your Camera to Reformat the Card. This has three advantages:
    1. You know your data is safe - because you've taken the time to check it.
    2. Reformatting the card is much, much faster - takes a couple of seconds
    3. Reformatting also refreshes the Directory Structure on the Card, helping prevent issues with the card and prolonging its life.
    But that's my 2 cents.

  • Aperture is not deleting images from 'camera'

I eject the CF card from my camera and put in a USB reader and plug it into the USB cable (from back of iMac to female). Aperture dutifully imports the images into my library then asks if I want to delete the files and eject. I click on that option and it asks again if I'm sure. I click on delete and eject.
Then Aperture ejects the CF without deleting the files.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
    Any advise?

Sometimes the FAT table becomes corrupt and the card needs a reformat. If you just delete files from the card, a hidden problem may jump out and bite you when you least want it.
It's always preferable to reformat in-camera than to delete files using computer software.

  • Aperture fails to load images from CF card, now not able to open

I have a new Canon 5D Mark III camera and was sold a  Lexar SD Professional 32 GB card and a Lexar Professional UDMA 7 Compact Flash 32 GB card.  Downloading the images from the camera is a problem.  I am using  a Mac Book Pro 15" with operating system OSX 10.6.8.   Aperture is on a Lacie external hard drive and now fails to open.  Yesterday, a message saying 'unreadable files' would show and a few images would be saved to Aperture.  Also, later, an 'unrecognizable format' message would appear. Before it stopped working, it would download one or two selected images but not a large number of images.
Any solutions?  Any comments would be appreciated.  Thank you!

Thanks Ernie!  The images would not load from the camera with the USB camera supplied cable.  Yes, the MBP has slot for the SD card and it downloads the images.
The Aperture library is on the LaCie external HD.  Don't know if the drive is formatted as OS X extended.
After posting the entry, I went to the local Staples store and purchased a Verbatium card reader and lo and behold, the world is fine.  The Aperture has returned and I was able to download all the CF card images.  The card reader would not read the SD card despite having it listed as one of the cards it's able to read.  Don't know what's happening here but at least I can use the MBP slot.
To me, it's strange!  It was all looking quite grim!  Thank you for your assistance!

Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
Photos > Use Raw as original.

  • Aperture installation deleted all image files from MacBook Pro.

After installing Aperture 3, I noticed that all the image files I had on my MacBook Pro immediately disappeared. These were stored in various locations throughout my computer depending on subject (e.g. "Emergency Response Training", "Summer 2009", "Car Restoration" and so on). A small number were in the "Pictures" folder but most were kept in other locations. All the folders and subfolders where these images were stored are intact but the images are gone. There is simply a "thumbs.db" file inside and the folder size is about 6 kb on average.
I did nothing other than install Aperture (no importing or library creation) and none of these images or folders are in the Aperture library. A similar thing happened with iPhoto where all my iphoto thumbnails show up but there appears to be no actual photo. No images prior to Aperture installation appear anywhere on the Macbook using tailored queries with "Find".
Apple support indicated that Aperture would not search out these photos unless prompted and would never delete them but It's hard to imagine how else this could have happened, as it happened only during installation (subsequent photos are fine) and targeted all image files in every location. Hard drive is new and indicates no problems.
Any ideas what might have happened - and, more importantly, how I might be able to recover the missing images? Unfortunately, my upgrade to Lion obliterated my DNS 321 back up disk, as well, and I don't yet know if I can recover those files.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Apple support claimed it was impossible for Aperture to delete files, as well, Allen. All I can tell you is I installed Aperture and the files immediately disappeared. I installed Aperture with the intention of learning its capabilities over the ensuing months, as I had never used it before, and so made sure to do nothing but install and launch so I could have a look at it and see how it was set up.
The network hard drive obliteration occured when I was trying to transfer novie files from my Macbook to my DNS 321 network drive, which I use to store all my backups and most of my media files. I've done this countless times with Snow Leopard without a hitch. However, when I tried it with Lion the system locked up during the transfer and I lost my connection to the drive. Once I managed to reconnect, I found that I couldn't get into the folders on the network drive anymore. All that would come up was a "My Documents" folder, which had no content. After doing a websearch I discovered that Lion no longer supports DNS 321 and that others with similar style drives had been having similar problems. What might be unique to my situation was that when I hooked up an old PC to the DNS 321 I was able to get back into my original folder set up but I found that the folders labelled from (A to J) were missing entirely and that the remaining folders had no content.
So, as I mentioned in my first post, the only input from me was installation and launch of Aperture and the only thing I was doing with my network drive was transferring movie files from the Macbook to the DNS 321 drive. If neither of those actions could possibly have caused the problems I described, I'd be very eager to learn what did.

  • Deleting images/files in harddisc, aperture 3

    Hello smart ones,
I'm having a tough time figuring out how to delete images in Aperture 3. I mean delete as in get rid of completely, not just in aperture library or such. I've been searching the blogs, net, discussions, etc, and trying and trying without success.
So. I need space in my harddisc and I imported "everything" in the beginning, and now it would be very easy to clear up some space w/aperture. I just cannot find a way to delete a version(s) and a master, so that it would also delete the actual file in the disc (in finder, sort of).
I actually tested the method of deleting the file in finder, but aperture still had it somehow ?!? Even restarted it but the photo was still there, eventhough the actual file was in the trash (=system trash).
If any of you have knowledge, I would be really happy !
    Thanks in advance,
    Teemu

    You're image didn't display.
What this all means is you have a messed up installation. If you imported as you say you did (in their current location) and you can see the masters in the finder OUTSIDE of the Aperture library package but Aperture shows you no images if you search for referenced images then something is seriously messed up beyond having to delete files twice.
If all you've written is correct then I would suggest you stop normal operations and try to find out what is going on because what you got ain't right.
Have you run the Basic trouble shooting steps? That would be a good place to start. Also make sure you have a working backup.
    good luck

  • Deleting images from camera

When I've imported photos into iphoto, it asks if I would like to delete the images on the card. Is there an option for this on Aperture?

There is, but you'll find that most of us strongly recommend against doing so. If something went wrong with the import, your images are erased before you had an opportunity to find out. Import your photos, make sure they all transferred properly, back them up, then erase your card using your camera.

  • Trouble downloading some images from CF card to iPhoto

My iMac was full - no space left on it. I did not know this until I tried to download a 16GB card that was almost full of RAW images from my 50D.
There were approximately 600 images on the card. Around 450 of them downloaded fine to iPhoto. Then I got an error message saying that my hard disk was full, and that I would not be able to download the remaining 150 images until I created room on my computer.
So, I went thru my image files and deleted about 200 photos, figuring that would create plenty of room for the remaining 150 that I still had on the card (the images I deleted were the same file size as the ones I was trying to download, so it should have freed up enough space).
When I tried to download the remaining 150 images, only about 5 or 10 downloaded successfully, then I got the same error message saying that my hard disk was full.
So, I again deleted more images, then tried to download the remaining images. This time, my computer wouldn't accept any of the images. I didn't even get the error message - iPhoto simply froze up when I tried to download the images remaining on the card.
I later deleted a few thousand images - to ensure that there would be plenty of room on my computer for new images. I then downloaded another card with about 600 images on it (from the same 50D). I had no problem downloading all 600+ of the images on this card. However, when I went and put the other card back in the card reader and tried to download those remaining 140 images, iPhoto simply froze up again and I couldn't download any of them.
WHen I put the CF card in my 50D, I can view those 140 images on my LCD screen without any problems. In fact, all of the info is intact for each of the images. But when I try to download to iPhoto, iPhoto freezes up and won't accept them.
I do not use any other photo program, so importing them into something like Lightroom or Aperture is not an option. I am also not interested in paying money to upgrade to a newer version of iPhoto, so I want to keep this within the iPhoto 08 that I currently use.
What I want to know is, does anyone know how I can get these images downloaded into iPhoto? Is there some type of software recovery program that is free, that will work directly with iPhoto?
Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
+PS: I will be away from my computer for most of the weekend, so if I don't respond to anyone's post promptly, my apologies. I'll review all posts and respond to them when I again have internet access in a couple days.+

    Thank you, Terrance.
I have cleared a ton of space on my hard drive. This is evidenced by the fact that I have recently uploaded about 2,000 photos onto my iPhoto app. Each photo is from a Canon 50D, and is a RAW file, so each image is right around the 20mb sie. These are huge files, and yet I've been able to download a couple thousand recently. Yet I still cannot download the 140+- images from that Compact Flash memory card that gave me trouble previously. It seems to me like somehow iPhoto and that particular card are having trouble "talking to" each other ever since I tried to "force" iPhoto to accept more than it could hold at that time.
Also, you mention using an external hard drive. I shoot only in RAW. When I import a photo into iPhoto, and edit it in iPhoto, iPhoto remembers what the original photo was like before I edited it. So, I can always go back to an image and simply ask iPhoto to revert the image to the original RAW file, and it does so.
My fear with using an external hard drive is that when I export an image from iPhoto to the external, that the external drive won't "remember" what the photo looked like before I edited it. Can I save the actual RAW file to the external, or do I need to export the photos as jPegs? If I can only export a jPeg, then I will lose much of the extremely detailed information that the original RAW image file contains.
