Aperture to iPad

I am awaiting my iPad, and thinking about how to keep Aperture photos on it. I have Aperture set to shared previews. What is the best preview size and quality settings for optimized viewing on an iPad? The iPad specs say, "TV and video Support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter," which is not an Aperture available size for previews. Will I only get the jpeg previews, and not the RAW files, on m iPad?
Thanks,
Ken

As excellent quality as the iPad screen is, it's still ultimately 1024x768 resolution, no more. Convert your photos to JPEGs at that resolution and be happy, I wouldn't obsess over it beyond that.

  • Aperture, the iPad, and sort order

Basically, Aperture and iPad really don't seem to be happy bed buddies. Seems to me the bottom line is if you want to use your iPad to browse and view pictures, don't "upgrade" to Aperture.
My basic problem is sort order, and twofold:
    1. The order of Albums and Events (ie. Projects) are completely out of whack.
    2. The order of actual photos in albums and events are completely out of whack too.
Now I've seen complaints about 2. in the discussions but they seem to be pretty old threads and everyone's seemed to just have lived with it. I also see this support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3381. Seriously? Apple calls that a "Resolution"? Manually dragging a photo in each and every album / project so that it uses the custom sort? Then of course on top of all that monkey work, the sort will be screwed for any future photos added to the album / project. ***? You can't even call that a workaround, let alone a resolution. Seriously Apple. Has anyone had any better luck with it?
This has been a pain in the *** with A2 and the iPhone but I didn't really use that too much to display my photos. But now with A3 and iPad, it's still exactly the same deal? This is just plain stupid.
As to 1. I can't for the life of me figure out what this order is (it's not by date or by name / path or anything I can tell), or if there's any way to change it. Nor could I find any threads about this issue so any info or tips would be very useful.
I really hate that all this iDevice syncing has solely been designed for use with iPhoto/iLife and the pro applications were just tacked on as a badly implemented afterthought. Is the pro market (specifically the intersection of Pro software and iDevice users) really this small that it means nothing to Apple, a company which normally prides itself in its attention to detail and user experience?

After taking a breath I renamed "version name" using the batch change function (you can select to keep the original file name untouched if you want) with a custom name as following:
    <Image Date> at <Image Time> - <Version Name> (optional as a reference to the original file name)
synched with ipad and everything is fine now. takes only 30 sec. still annoying you have to go through these extra loops though...

  • Aperture for iPad

I'd like to see a version of Aperture for iPad in the future. Anyway just a thought.

It would need to be a cut down version as the iPad isn't powerful enough to support a lot of the functionality that is in Aperture on the Mac : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • How do i import specified albums in aperture to ipad 2

ipad 2 only seems to allow importing the entire aperture library. I woud like to only import specific albums. i am running aperture 3.1.2

Using iTunes, find/select your connected iPad, then choose the Photos tab, then scroll below as needed to select your album(s).

  • Order of items is messed up when sync'ing from Aperture to iPad

I scanned about 180 slides in order, resulting in files Scan-110528-0001.tif and up.
I imported them as a folder to a project into Aperture 3.1.2.
I applied the auto enhance preset using Automator to all.
I retouched some and changed some exposure data.
I set the project to be kept arranged by file name.
Finally I sync'ed the project to an iPad2.
Unfortunately, the photos seem to be in random order on the iPad -- not useful to show to others.
I added an album with the same files, ordered by file name, and also sync'ed to the iPad2.
    Same(?) scramble.
I called Apple's Express Lane, to no avail -- they let the call die and called it closed.
    Any suggestions, please?

    Yes, the reason is this:
the text portions (that reside within the RTF file) are texts that are used in multiple documents.
For example, it could be a company adress that is used in 100 docs at various positions. In order to reduce maintenance work, (in case the adress changes: e.g. new phone number), the text frame is placed as a file and links to the RTF file. If I placed real / normal text directly, I would have 100 instances of the adress. This would mean much more maintenance work.
Another advantage is, that if the length of the RTF text changes, I can tell the RTF text frame (in advance) to extend automatically (e.g. towards the bottom of the page). This enables a dynamic layout which reacts flexibly to changes.
It's similar to using an image multiple times. But here, it's text. And flexible.

  • Getting 5D Mark II Video From Aperture to iPad/iPhone

I’m looking for some help on my workflow.  I’d also like to know if I’m actually just missing something in the way iTunes handles syncing video from an Aperture library to an iPad or iPhone.  Video, and specifically video from my 5D Mark II, is what’s causing me trouble.  I think the actual issue is the manner in which iTunes handles the 5D’s video, but maybe you can fill in some of the blanks for me, and offer a suggestion or two.
    CURRENT WORKFLOW
I’m ingesting to an Aperture library via (1) Photo Stream (for still images from my iPhone 4S and iPad “3”), (2) PhotoSync for videos from the same two iOS devices (it’s an app that allows WiFi transfer from device to laptop, etc.), and (3) via CF card from the 5D to the laptop, over a FireWire reader (stills and video).  Once everything’s in Aperture, I add metadata, assign ratings, add keywords, make adjustments, and set up Smart Albums to make it easy to pick what to sync to my iOS devices (the two listed above, plus an iPhone 4 and original iPad for others in my household).
    ITUNES SYNC ERRORS
I use iTunes to select the Smart Albums and whatever else I want to sync from Aperture, and sync over WiFi.  In choosing the photos, the box is ticked to include videos.  Several videos sync without trouble, but it appears that they are limited to those shot on an iPhone or iPad.  The videos that came from the 5D throw an iTunes sync error, that basically says:  “Some of the videos in your iTunes library, including the video [file name], were not copied to the iPad “[name of iPad]” because they cannot be played on this iPad.”  A disclosure triangle below that text reveals the full list of files suffering this fate.
There are two problems with that error message.  First, the 5D videos are not actually in my iTunes library -- they’re in an Aperture library, just passing through iTunes on their way to one or more of the iPhones or iPads.  Second, the videos actually do play just fine on the iOS devices.  I know this because a friend suggested I test it by transferring the same 5D video file that would not sync over to the iPad a different way.  I used Dropbox to get the file onto the iPad, and once there, it played just fine.
    REQUEST FOR HELP
So, first, is this behavior as it should be?  I’d think that a video that plays fine on the device, and fine on the Mac, should have no trouble syncing from the Mac to the device., but perhaps you can explain why I’ve got that wrong.  Second, am I right to figure that iTunes is the culprit here?  If so, what exactly is it doing?  Third, and assuming there is no fix for what’s happening, what’s the best (most automated) way to get those videos onto the iPad?  I keep the stills and the videos all together, organized chronologically on hard drive, and I’d like to keep it that way.  I’d also really prefer leaving the 5D videos in Aperture.
The best I’ve been able to even sketch out mentally is to try a Smart Folder in Finder that can identify and distinguish the videos from the 5D vs., say, an iPhone video.  Then that smart folder somehow gets synced to something that lands on the iPad.  That’s just a loose concept; I’m not sure how to execute it, and I’m not sure how much trouble it would be.  If you can help me figure out how to do this, or if you have a more elegant solution, I’ll be in your debt.
Thanks for making it this far, too!

I got exactly the same problem (same config. and workflow but the wifi sync).
I manage to workarround it, as you anticipated, by a Smart Folder where I filter the 5D videos like this:
    "Add Rule" -> "Aperture Metadata"
"Aperture: [Aperture Filename] [Is not empty an does not contain] [MVI_]"
Please, Apple guys, consider our concerns as a bug in the "Liberal Arts / Tech" cross. Yes, I know it could yield a way to introduce piracy video to the photo/video viewer on iOS, but we need a way to do it with our own video creations without workarrounds.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Copy some folders of photos from Aperture to iPad

I want to copy 3 or 4 folders of pics from my Mac (Aperture) to an ipad. when I sync a folder it works and then when i sync a 2nd folder it deletes the original synced one. Can I put 3 or 4 folders into one folder and sync that, but how will it display on the ipad

Are you syncing a folder in the Finder or a folder in Aperture?
Each sync will replace the previously synced content. So you need to sync more than a library item from Aperture at once.
You can select multiple Aperture albums, projects, Faces, Places, when you sync your iPad with your mac in iTunes.
Just set the "Photos" tab in iTunes to "Sync Photos from" to "Aperture", not to "Folder".
See this link to a support document:   iTunes: Syncing photos
It shows, how to set iTunes to sync from Aperture or iPhoto.

  • Problem syncing Aperture to iPad

Has anyone else had a problem syncing Aperture to the iPad after upgrading to Mountain Lion?  I have attempted to sync selected albums from Aperture, but no new images were transferred.
    Thanks -
    Dudley

I agree, it appears to be screwed up. I've only been able to do limited tests, but it appears you CANNOT choose "Selected Albums, ...." WITHOUT specifying something other than 'no Events'. In other words, you can't simply select an album or smart collection, you MUST choose an event. And I've found even if I choose 'all events', I only get a small subset of the photos in the library included as part of the sync. What's an event, anyway? It's not part of Aperture's nomenclature.
This whole process looks pretty stupid to me, and I don't have time to spend with it right now. In the limited syncing I've done, I've always used the other way, i.e., NOT Aperture. Unless I'm totally missing the boat here, looks like I will have to continue doing that.

  • Updated to Mountain Lion and also updated Aperture now ipad and iphone images are unsupported?

I've looked all over here and maybe I've missed it, but the only images that are missing or receiving the unsported image are the ones that have been taken with the iphone or ipad. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
I've tried reprocessing the photos and this still doesn't work. The photos that I recently imported from my Canon 60D are fine. Also when my photos re-synced with facebook they are now showing up there as the ! unsupported image on facebook.
Thanks for any help you may offer.

Unfortunately, that is a feature and not a bug.
It's the new design since Lion - Iphoto already has gone gray before Aperture See for example these links:
Re: After updating to Aperture 3.3 all my icons appears in Black and white. This includes the inspect button, photo stream button, the Facebook / flicker share button. Could you please help here ?
How to bring back the color: (for experienced users only)
Re: Have today loaded the 3.3 up date on Aperture. After the up date the colour of the Menu Bar and all icons showing projects / albums etc are now grey. Any thoughts on how to reestablish the colours.
There are many more threads on this. Browse a little.

  • Aperture on iPad

Wouldn't it be nice if you could star or add other metadata to photos on your iPad or even iPhone and have it sync back to aperture? Does anyone know of something like this? If apple can make iMovie for the iPhone this should be easy.

    Indeed!
How much would you be willing to pay for such an application? Let's say the main feature is to edit metadata.
How about adding remote shooting via wifi of 3G using tethering of camera connected to Mac/Aperture? How much for this?

  • Aperture to iPad syncing original, not adjusted

Im pretty sure all setting are correct in previews as both top boxes are ticked, then "Always" and "half size" and on the Gear tab "Maintain Previews for Projects" has a tick next to it, Although it is greyed out when i click on a album.
So I try and sync photo's though itunes and what i get is the original photo not the adjusted photo, which is pointless when im traverling and want to up date my blog.
    Thanks

Maybe your Photo Cache is corrupted - I'd try to clear the Photo Cache as described here:
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
If this should not help, make sure the previews of your edited images are current - and if updating the previews does not help, you may need to repair your library; see the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics on how to repair the permissions in your Aperture Library or to repair the database.

  • Aperture to iPad - Selective Synch of Images

I am trying to figure out how I can selectively sync images in their respective albums to my new iPad. I would like to be able to do the following
    - sync based on rating [synch all albums but only their 5 or 4 and 5 star images]
    - apply keyword filters
It seems that you can potentially do some of this via Smart Albums but I can't get these to do what I want.

I've been hoping for this feature too!!! Very useful! Right now, I just leave it off, and manually go into the settings when I need a particular email to show it's images

  • Has anyone had a problem with syncing photos from Aperture to iPad?

It appears that many sub-level photos are not syncing.

    No, can't say I have.
Could very well well be an image format issue, or a corrupted file. What platform is the source from (iOS, Android?). And what does "not being able to open" mean exactly?
You might also try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

  • Ipad and Aperture 3

Is apple going to make aperture 3 for ipad and can the ipad not handle it??

Don't think so and it doesn't make sense to use Aperture on iPad because you are going to run out of space for pictures very quickly and don't think the processor in the iPad can handle this. I use Aperture 3 and syncs over 6000 pictures to iPad, they are just the previews so they are much smaller than the original and works well because of the resolution of the iPad.

  • Problem synching aperture photos with iPad/iPhone ios8

Updated to Yosemite. Attempting to sync select photos (Aperture) with iPad Air (ios8) or iPhone 6 (iOS 8.1) with iTunes. When I click Photos in the left-hand column of iTuns I get is an endless loading loop icon in the middle of the screen. No option to select Aperture or the albums, etc. What's  going on? Thanks, Bruce

    Just two edits
1/ Sync works with the new Photos app.
2/ iTunes does display Apertures folder / project tree in the photos sync section (allowing you to pick what to sync) yet does NOT display the corresponding number of pictures
