Aperture Trial 2.1.4 with Canon 7D

Recently down loaded the Trial 2.1.4 Aperture and am using with a Canon 7D. First time I used it, the photos did show up in the Browser, after a very long down load, but when I went to view, I got an error message, "Unsupported Image Format". I shot the photo's in both JPEG & RAW. I did get two copies of each photo, but both came up as IMG images? Is it possible that the Trial version of Aperture does does not support Canon 7D? Per what I read on line it should?

Thanks, yes, the update appears to have solved the problem. Now my problem is the amount of time it takes to load, it has been trying to load the thumbnails for about 20 minutes. Since I can now use my IPhoto 08 with my RAW files, I may not need Aperture right now. Has anyone else had a problem with excessive time to transfer files from memory cards to Aperture and also just opening an existing file / project? My images are large, but they loaded pretty quickly in IPhoto? And yes, I needed to update my software status, I am now using Snow Leopard 10.6.2. AGain, thanks for your feed back.

  • Aperture 3 bad raw conversion with Canon files

Hi, Aperture is converting my 6400 iso raws into images I can't work with to my satisfaction. For pleasure I shot a staged disco dance event with some fun colorful lighting. When imported into Aperture via card reader the previews look somewhat similar to the Rebel's LCD jpg rendition.
One example, the stage light beams which are enhanced by smoke machines have one light with blue and another with magenta. When I click on that preview, the spinning wheel appears as usual saying loading which I believe is applying Aperture's interpretation algorithms. The results are stripping all the magenta and no matter what I do with the controls such as enhancement I can't get back the correct color. Remember the first loaded preview are similar to what I see in camera.
I rarely shoot this high of iso and I'm finding adjustments with highlights to be extremely sensitive with a much lower threshold of adjustment. On most of the previews I attempted adjustment I preferred the look before Aperture converted them. Clicking "M" for master does not revert back to what I first saw before selecting it. I can't get back to that original first imported look. I can see the differences in the previews side by side, one I click on and a similar shot I didn't.
I have never had this criticism before with this camera at 100 iso though it is recently acquired by a few months and never had this complaint with any of my NEF Nikon files. At first when beginning import the preview widow scrambled the order of the files where some images sat besides other images taken at an entirely different time. I closed everything and restarted and at first it did it again then corrected the order to which I hit the import button. I kept the images on the card and now will reload them directly onto my HD first. I'm reluctant to load into Aperture directly until I figure out what is going on.
I did download Canon's DPP processor and it did hold onto the colors that you see with the thumbnails you see to the left of the selected image. Go figure. I have not touched any of the import settings in preferences.
    Your suggestions appreciated.
    John

So what you're seeing initially at import is the JPEG that the camera generates as a preview for the image. All RAW files have this; the JPEG is what's used by the camera itself to give you the preview on the back of the camera.
When Aperture imports, it will initially show you the JPEG. Then, once it renders its own version, based on the raw converter built into OS X, it will show you that updated preview (which is also a JPEG). From that point on, that's what you'll see, and you can't get the RAW-embedded JPEG again.
If you use Canon's DPP, you're going to get a rendering that looks like what you saw on the camera, because they have access to their algorithms that they use for RAW->JPEG conversion. Apple doesn't have access to this; they make their own raw converter.
It may be possible that there are issues with Apple's raw converter in specific circumstances (i.e. high ISO images on a certain camera with heavy magenta or odd lighting). You don't say what version of Aperture and OS X you're using, but it looks like it is not Aperture 3.6 + Yosemite. It may be worth upgrading to see if  it's something that's improved (an easier way is if you have access to a machine with Yosemite, just open one of the RAW files in Preview, as that uses the same raw converter, to see if it's better).

  • Aperture RAW conversion colour noise with Canon 1D Mark II

I'm using Aperture 2.1 and am wondering if anyone here is having this problem - basically highlights end up with false colour with this camera/RAW conversion combination. The problems appears to have been introduced with the 1.1 RAW converter as 1.0 conversions don't seem to have the problem. I'm not sure if this is camera specific, or whether there is some tuning which can be done to the RAW converter to minimise the effect - attempts have so far failed with this approach.
The best subject to produce the effect is strong reflections from water - i've attached a crop of an image which shows this problem, and I can supply a RAW with this problem.
Conversion using RAW 1.0 (less or no colour pixelation):
    http://www.loftsoft.co.uk/pictures/KC7U5116%20-%20RAW%201.0.jpg
Conversion using RAW 2.0 (colour pixelation):
    http://www.loftsoft.co.uk/pictures/KC7U5116%20-%20RAW%202.0.jpg
Any suggestions as to what to do? Is this simply a RAW conversion problem which can be addressed or am I using the tool wrong?
    Many thanks,
    Cesare

Hmm. I can see some color effects in the 1.0 conversion as well.
Those are some touch photos... you have lots of specular highlights with the sun reflecting off the water and the railing.
Aperture 2.x and 1.x handle the RAW conversion differently. I would suggest you try playing with the RAW Fine Tuning brick, specifically with the Moire and Radius sliders, and try fiddling with the Auto Noise Compensation checkbox.
I don't know whether you'll be able to make the problem go away completely or not.
With my ~30,000 1D Mark II files I've seen something similar to this (though much less extreme) on a couple of them. Always with specular highlights though -- off water or metal objects.
Still, you may wish to submit Aperture feedback and include the RAW file.

  • Problem with Canon RAW 5D/7D Raw file and Magenta highlights

    Hi everyone,
I've noticed a problem with some Canon RAW nightly shots when in scene are present magenta spotlights (also red and blue):
In the core of light, magenta color become "solarized" and white burned, and there is no way to recover it with any Adjustments. (also but in minor way, Red and Blue lights)
Opening the RAW file in Canon Digital Photo Pro the same images are perfect:
(left image Aperture3 - right image Canon DPP)
    Any suggestion?

I have exactly the same problem with the 7D RAW files. I have tried Leopard+ Aperture 2, Snow Leopard + Aperture 3 trial and nothing makes a difference. Horrible magenta colour cast on the neutral tones, yet the blues are over-saturated and total lack of sharpness no matter what you do.
I shot JPEG (neutral) and RAW together so know what they should look like. I don't get any problems with Canon DPP software so the error seems to be in the Aperture RAW converter. The issue seems to be more apparent in low light or images with a lot of neutral tones, other images shot outside in good light appear to be pretty much ok. I even tried the latest version of Lightroom and that can't seem to handle them well either.
The link below was a thread that was running on the 7D problems, but no solution was ever provided.

  • How do I remove Aperture trial and go back to iPhoto (be kind, I'm new).

How do I remove the Aperture trial and go back to iPhoto.  For my usage (just iPhone pics/movies) iPhoto is okay for me, but now I cannot figure out how to remove Aperture, when I drag to Trash I get a warning that Aperture is a system file.
Please help, but also, please go slow if you can help, I am new to my Mac.

Should be pretty easy as follows:
1 - Make sure you have copies of any pictures you want that are inside Aperture somewhere on your computer.
2 - Quit Aperture > Remove any Aperture icon from dock > drag the Aperture program (lens icon) from Applications folder to the Trash > proceed through any warning dialog (including entering password as required) to complete the process.
Note - new security features in OS X Lion may present those warning dialogs to prevent accidental deletion of Apple programs.
3 - Hold down the 'Option' key and use the 'Go' menu in menu bar and select the 'Library' option.
4 - In the Library folder, open the 'Application Support' folder and delete any Aperture folder found.
5 - While still in the Library folder, open the 'Preferences' folder and delete both the 'com.apple.Aperture.plist' and 'com.apple.Aperture.plist.lockfile' file.
6 - While still in the Library folder, open the 'Caches' folder and delete the 'com.apple.Aperture' folder.
7 - Go the your 'Pictures' folder and drag the 'Aperture Library' (may be named Aperture Trial Library or similar) to the Trash to delete it as well.
8 - Empty the Finder Trash to remove Aperture.
Note - there are some files and Aperture folders in the '/Library' folder (which is in the root of your system drive), but you don't really need to remove those. Since you are a beginner, it is probably better not to for now.
    That should do it.
Additional edit: There are two Library folders I am referring to. The first is the one in your user account 'Home' folder which is the one you are going to by using the 'Go' menu. This is the one you are deleting files from in the steps listed. The second Library folder is the one in the root of your system drive and is not typically a location for beginners to work with (thus the final note above). Hope that is clear enough.

  • Aperture 3.1.2 Crashing with Lumix DMC-LX3 RW2 RAW Files

The subject pretty much sums it up: Aperture has recently starting crashing with certain files from my Lumix LX3- I am fairly sure the problem is limited to the RW2 RAW files from the Lumix, as I shoot as well with Canon 5D and 1D MkII and have not noticed any problems with these files. Also, I should not that Aperture handles the vast majority of the RW2 files with no problems (the RAW-engine update which supports these files is installed), but there are certain files that I can not open or view- Aperture will crash immediately if I click on them...
Any ideas? Is this something 'Repair Database' might help with or is there another problem.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jason

    Thanks for the quick response-
No, as far as I can tell there are no adjustments that are generally common. It seems to be completely random files, and some files which worked fine at one point no longer work. I have also tried 'Remove all Adjustments' and this doesn't seem to help. It's not a lot of files- I just find them as I work through the photos to edit, but for example out of one batch of 100 or so files there were 2 files which I can't open...
The files open fine in Adobe Camera RAW, so this seems to be an Aperture specific issue. Also Aperture has created previews for the effected files, and if I click 'Quick-View' I am able to view these previews, but Aperture can't load the RAW files.

  • Blue prints purple with Canon ICC profiles

    Hi,
I am printing a "printer evaluation image" (http://www.outbackprint.com/printinginsights/pi049/essay.html) with my Canon Pro 9000 (Mk I). When selecting System Managed on the ColorSync option in the print dialog everything prints perfect. (Of course I have selected the correct paper under media in the driver)
When selecting the paper ICC profile in the ColorSync option blue turns into purple in the printer dialog image, same things goes for the print (at least it matches...). All other colors, skin tones etc looks perfect.
So it seems to me like everything is ok as long as the printer handles the color management, but when Aperture 2 handles it something goes wrong.
I have spent several hours googling the problem, as well as double checking all setting, driver version etc. I have tried different papers and the problem is consistent. Both OSX and Aperture version is up to date.
Anyone with similar problem? Is it an Aperture problem or is it the Canon ICC profiles?
    Thomas

    Hi,
Here is an update for those who are interested:
I believe I have been able to isolate the problem to Aperture. This is what I did:
Step 1). Used Keynote to make a 100% Blue square and exported that to a 16-bit TIFF.
Step 2). Imported the TIFF into Aperture, used the DigitalColor Meter utility to ensure it was 100% Blue. Print: Selected the Canon Pro9000 PR1 Profile, In the print settings selected Photo Paper Pro II and set quality to high. Preview is purple AND print is purple.
Step 3). Then imported the TIFF into Pixelmator, again with DigitalColor Meter utility ensured that it was still 100% Blue. Print: Under Color matching menu selected Color Sync and Canon Pro PR1 Profile, under Quality and Media menu selected Photo Paper Pro II and set quality to high. Preview is Blue AND print is Blue!!
To me this seems to indicate the following:
1). The Canon driver is good - Works perfectly with Pixelmator
2). The Canon Pro9000 PR1 profile is fine - works perfectly with Pixelmator
3). The Printer is fine - again... Pixelmator
4). Even though my system is not color calibrated, it is quite good - Preview match print with Pixelmator.
That leaves Aperture and how it handles ICC profiles with the Canon Pro9000 driver...
Anybody else able to confirm this?

  • Aperture Trial loaded but will not accept the emailed serial number

I downloaded the aperture trial, and received an email with the serial number to activate the trial but i keep being told the serial number is invalid!
I am concerned that my trial is counting down, and i cannot access it... can i register for another serial number or should i get help with getting this one working?

Serial number issues are most often related to typing it incorrectly. Either an accidental typo or confusing a zero with the letter "O". The best way to enter the serial number is to copy it from the email and paste it into Aperture.

  • Aperture trial to full version

I have been using the aperture trial for 26 days, and I'm gonna get the full version, my question is, should I get the box, or the activation code. I ask this because I have some projects set up as well as a vault and I don't know if when the trial ends, I'll lose this stuff. Will that happen...also, is the documentation that important? I bought the Apple Pro Training series book, Getting Started with Aperture...do I need everything else that is bundled? Thanks
    1.83 ghz 2gb RAM MacBook Pro 100gb hd + 250gb external hd   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

And if all else fails, just backup ApertureTrial.dmg to a CD. (132MMB dmg will fit on a 700MB CD easily) That's version 1.5.0. Then just download the update and you're back.
Actually you might be able to download the updater as a standalone and back that up on the same CD.

  • Can't download Aperture trial version

If somebody could help me I would be very grateful as the search I did on this category didn't provide any answers.
I want to download Aperture trial from the Apple site, but every time I click the download a new Tab opens with an empty window and the address is: "http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/Aperture/061-61 41.20090408.TR0r2/Aperture2.1.3Trial.dmg"
I already got three serial numbers and I still can't download and I have no ideas left.
    Thank you in advance.
    Best regards,
    Daniel

Thank you for trying. I have found the problem. It's Intego AntiVirus Banner filter, who would imagine?!
I stopped all other filters, but not that one, and now when I turned Intego completely off it started working.

  • What version of Elements will work with Canon Print Studio Pro

What version of Elements will work with Canon Print Studio Pro?

I tried this step but it did not work. I have a Mac YosemiteOS 10.10.1. I copied to plug in files from Canon Print Studio Pro. Open canon utilities, open print studio pro, open CS4 folder and copied files CNPSPP101.plugin and CNPSPP102.plugin (not there is also a folder called CS5 but it has the fame plugin files)
I copy these files and then go to Photoshop Elements 13 and paste these files in Support File folder in Plug - ins and also did in folder Optional Plug-ins.
I then open Photoshop Elements 13 and hit Automation tools but Canon Pro Studio option is not there.
Can you provide more details on where I might be going wrong.
I put in a trial version of Elements 12 and have no problem. I just can't find where to purchase Elements 12 so I do not lose it in 30 days. Know where I can  purchase?

  • Aperture 2.0 won't use my "Aperture Trial Library"

For some reason, Aperture 2.0 is suddenly now asking me each time I open it if I want to create a NEW trial library. I can't get it to open the Trial library I already made with it! At this point, I'm stuck. I've got an "Aperture Trial Library" that I made when I first opened Aperture 2.0, but it's now worthless.
Anyone else experience this? Any fix?

I finally just upgraded. Of course, that fixed it.

  • Restarting/Resetting the Aperture Trial

    Hi all,
Back in August I bought a MacBook Pro which came loaded with a trial version of Aperture. Through reasons which may have been accident or my own stupidity, I ended up starting the 30-day trial. Unfortunately I then went on my honeymoon to New Zealand for over a month. So life has settled down, and I'm ready to go through the 6000+ photos I took while in New Zealand, and I now find a need to evaluate Aperture - I wouldn't be a power user (yet) but iPhoto just doesn't cut it for me.
I tried downloading a new trial key, however it won't allow me to start a new trial - which I guess is the whole point. I've phoned after-sales about it and they were unhelpful. However last night I had a call from Apple asking me how my new MBP was working out, and I mentioned this issue. So the guy suggested I check with the Apple Discussions site. I've followed the advice in this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5130341 but removing the license key file doesn't seem to help me out.
So I write here in the hope that someone may have more advice for me - I really want to try this software out! Is there something I missed in the original post (for example the name of the license key file - maybe it was discretion that led the other poster to not mention it directly so I'll try to be discrete too!)
    Many thanks,
    Maurice Kelly

When yu did the update from Lepoard to Snow Lepoard  did you do a clean install of the OS or did you update in place? As long as you did not do a clean install then the upgarde wouldnot have touched any user files.
You keep mentioning external drives, plural, how many are there? You wrote then when she was traveling she would import to the MBP's  Aperture library and then mention finding many of thede images on extenal disks. Did she have a disk(s) with her when she traveled?
Then you mention an Aperture Trial library, why? If she has been using Aperture for years why now is there a trial library? How did you update Aperture and when did you update it?
Again by default the trial library (and anyother librsry Aperture creates) goes in the users Picture folder unless you tell Aperture to place it elsewhere.
How did you search for the libraries? If you open Aperture anf go to File->Switch to Library; Other/New you get a list of libraries Aperture knows about, did you check all those?
Is it possible you have two versions of Aperture on your system?  If so the other version might have been what your wife was using when she imported and it knoes where the library is.

  • Aperture Trial crashed and now my trial has expired

I have just received my new MacBook Pro and was excited to be able to try the Aperture Trial version. Installation went smoothly, and on first startup I let Aperture import my iPhoto library. However at about 10% of importing, Aperture seemed to have stalled. It did not respond to my input. Even trying to quit it from the dock had no effect. So I used Force Quit.
Now when I try to restart Aperture I get a message that my trial has expired, and I get the option to buy it. I would really be interesting in buying it after a 30-day trial, but not after a 10-minute trial which ended in a crash and a bug that now prevents me from starting up again!
Any similar experiences or possible solutions?

Thanks! I tried your suggestion to delete everything Aperture related from the library, but with no luck. I also installed Aperture on my old 1.8 GHz iMac G5 yesterday, just as a test, and had no problems there (except that that machine is really too slow for Aperture). Then to my surprise, this morning the Aperture trial also worked again on my brand new MacBook Pro.
In hindsight, I think I must have installed the Aperture trial while my system clock was still on Shanghai time (where the MacBook Pro factory is). Yesterday (wednesday) afternoon in Europe, when I was installing, it must already have been thursday morning in China. Then during or after the installation I adjusted the time to Central European time, and the date skipped one day back. So the piece of software that was checking whether the trial was still valid actually noticed that the system date was before the date that the trial began and did not let me start the software again until today! Although I am not quite sure, that's my best theory about what must have happened.
As for the unresponsiveness that caused me to force quit Aperture in the first place, that might have been a mistake as well. In my eagerness to test the new computer I was doing many things at the same time. At the moment I have only 1 GB of RAM in this computer. I would suggest anyone trying out Aperture on a brand new machine to be patient. First make sure all other software and settings are in place, and then take a few hours to run Aperture alone, in order to let it import your images, etc.

  • Problems with CANON 40d

    Hi.
I have reed the topics related with CANON cameras but none resolved my problem.
I'm quite new to mac world but I recently purchased a MacBook Pro 2.66 that came pre-instaled with snow leopard. What was my surprise when a plugged my CANON 40D to it with USB cable! The computer doesn't recognize the camera! The camera keeps flashing the "Busy" message and nothing else works. Strange, I'm quite new to MACs but my wife have a MacBook Air with Leopard and everything works OK. What's wrong then? Anyone has or had the same problem?
I see i'll have to purchase a CF card reader, since I don't have any I have to "BOOTCAM" in order to take my photos off the camera...
    What a shame!
    Thanks for an answer!
    Luis

    Yep, me too.
can't import raw pics on aperture 2.1.4, iphoto 09, image capture app, or adobe bridge.
    Thanks Apple.
