Aperture unable to write library

After updating to Aperture 3.6 I get a pop up informing me I need to update my library only after I click on upgrade I get another pop up that says:
Unable to write to Library "Aperture Library"
Check that the volume has sufficient free disk space.
I've checked my storage and should have more than enough storage so I am not sure what else to do.

I've checked my storage and should have more than enough storage so I am not sure what else to do.
How much free storage do you have? Upgrading an Aperture library can temporarily need considerably more storage, if your library is large. You should have at least 20GB free storage, better more.
But you probably just upgraded to Yosemite. And the Yosemite upgrade has occasionally caused permission problems. If your Aperture library is in your Home folder, I'd try to repair the permissions and access control lists on your Home folder.

  • Aperture+Unable To Move Library

    Hello All,
I'm trying to copy my Aperture 3 Library ( 807 GB ) to another larger internal drive, every time i try a Finder copy of it, it runs untill its copied about 2.67 Gb and then stalls
Unable to move it to the other drive !
    Any help would be great
    Thanks
    Darren

Well this sounds more like a system issue than an Aperture one. To the Finder an Aperture library is just another collection of files and folders.
A few things that might help. First run the Aperture permissions and repair on the library before doing the copy just to insure the integrity of the library . Second make sure the drive your copying to is formatted OS X Extended. Third run Disk Utility and run repair on the destination drive. Fourth close Aperture or at least have it opened on another library when you do the copy. If files are open it might interfere with the copy. Finally If you're still having problems you could try reformatting the destination drive.

  • Can't upgrade iPhoto Library - 'unable to write to library "iPhoto Library"'

I apologise in advance if this is a little convoluted.
I have a MacBook Pro purchased a little over a year ago and I'm not sure what version of iPhoto is was running. It had a meltdown when I tried to upgrade to Mountain Lion and was ably serviced and returned to me with all my data heroically saved and stored in a shared folder.
When I got it back I upgraded successfully to Mountain Lion and installed all the iPhoto updates. After a false start, and having to reinstall iPhoto I am now running 9.4.3.
I have shifted my old iPhoto Library out of the shared folder and into the Pictures folder where it sits alongside the pretty much empty iPhoto Library created automatically by the install. When I try to open my old Library it says it needs to be upgraded, which makes sense, but immediately after the upgrade commences I get an error message saying 'Unable to write to library "iPhoto Library" Check that you have permission to write to the library directory'. I am not sure what to do from this point.
I have verified that the photos are all still in the old iPhoto Library Package.
    Thank you.

Hang on - I had browsed extensively, but it was only after I wrote my question that all the other similar ones popped up on the side bar. I've followed the advice in some of those and it seems to be working. I apologise, but I seem to be unable to delete this discussion.

  • Unable to write to library iPhoto library Check that you have permission to write to the library directory

I think my iPhoto memory is full. I cannot get in to delete photos.  When I open it I get the Unable to write to library iPhoto libraryCheck that you have permission to write to the library directory" and i can't do anything else. I tried alt/cmd first aid and it didn't work.
I want to get in and move pics over to a USB stick drive but cannot get past the Unable to write to library..message.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Aperture cannot access this library, aperture cannot access this library

I received this message today when I tried to open the aperture 3. The library is on an external LaCie hard disk plugged into the imac

    Andrew,
are you the owner of the files on your LaCie drive? If not, I'd try to reset the owner:
First check your current user id: Open a Terminal window:
    Enter:
        echo $UID
On my system this will print : 502
Then check the UID associated with your La Cie files:
    Enter into the Terminal window:
         ls -an
then add a "space", then drag the icon of your La Cie drive from the Finder to the Terminal, to enter the path to the drive, hit "return".
This should print listing similar to this: and the second column should correspond to your UID.
    bash-3.2$ ls -an /Volumes/HermioneMedia
    total 41240
    drwxrwxr-x@ 45      502  20      1598  5 Aug 09:43 .

    d--x--x--x   8      502  20       272 29 Jul 10:55 .DocumentRevisions-V100
    drwx------   5      502  20       170  5 Mai 16:53 .Spotlight-V100
    drwxrwxrwt@  5      502  20       170 28 Jul 15:31 .TemporaryItems
    d-wx-wx-wt   3      502  20       102 11 Aug 16:09 .Trashes
If you see a different number, try to change the ownership:
    Type:
    sudo chown -R $UID
then again add a "space", then drag the icon of your La Cie drive from the Finder to the Terminal, to enter the path to the drive, hit "return". You will have to authorize as administrator, so double check what you typed. This will set the user id of all files on your drive to your own user id.

    Hi iTunes-1,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The error message you posted indicates a possible firmware update is needed for iTunes for Windows to work with your CD drive.
iTunes for Windows: Updating the firmware on your CD or DVD drive - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201852
Having outdated firmware can cause issues using CDs and DVDs with iTunes for Windows. Firmware is a type of software stored in a chip in hardware that can sometimes be updated.Identifying drives and firmware versions
To run CD Diagnostics, follow the steps in this document.
After following the steps to run CD Diagnostics linked above, look at section three to find out more about your optical drive(s).
Here is an example of what section three might look like:
In this example there are two drives. Drive E is a Samsung DVD-ROM drive with a model designation of SD-616 that has firmware version F000. Drive F is an NEC drive with a model designation of NR-7900A that has firmware version 1.08.Updating the firmware
If the optical drive you are using came with your computer, check with the support site for your computer for a firmware update. Typically you will need to go to the support website for the computer maker and click on a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your computer model designation and operating system version to see what updates are available. Then look through the available updates for a firmware update for your optical drive. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of your computer.
If the optical drive you are using came as a separate part (was not included with a computer), check the support site for the drive maker for a firmware update. Sometimes the manufacturer is not clear in the CD Diagnostics results. In that case, you may just have to search the Internet for the drive model designation. You can usually find out who made the drive by looking through the results of such a search. Once you have identified who made your drive, go to the support website for that company. Look for a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your optical drive model designation. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of the optical drive.Verifying that the firmware was updated
    Run CD Diagnostics again.
Examine the CD Diagnostics results. The firmware version for the drive should be the new version.

Also, you mentioned that you have been successful burning a CD with the Windows OS.  Make sure that you have closed all software programs that can access the CD burner so that there isn't a conflict for the drive.   Sometimes chaning the burn speed from "maximum" to 8x can also help in this situation.
I hope this information helps ...

  • Please Help! Unable to write error whilst trying to synch my ipod to Ext HD

    Hi there,
I hope someone out there can help me as I have searched high and low for the answer to my problem without success.
I recently copied my music library to an external hard drive (seagate) connected to my pc via usb. I am able to play music fine from the external library. However when I plug in my ipod to copy the music over, Itunes crashes with an unable to write/network connection error.
As I have >60GB of music and a 20GB ipod, I have selected the option to auto update from playlists which is < 15GB of music. This doesn't seem to be the issue though because attempting to manually update the ipod by drag and drop gives me the same error.
Generally, one song will copy over before the error is displayed or itunes crashes. If I unplug the ipod then itunes recovers ok.
I have upgraded my ipod and itunes to the latest software versions - a number of times:( I am getting the same problem on my HP Compaq desktop as I do on my Dell Inspiron laptop at home.
There seems to be a conflict somewhere but I really need help to resolve it.
    Hope someone can help!
    Thx,
    Nikki.

Could be your security software preventing the devices from being recognized in iTunes. Try disabling a/v software and turn off the Firewall.
    Disable antivirus software

  • Lync Hybrid : Unable to write to active directory due to lack of permission

    Hello everyone,
I need a little help to troubleshoot a problem I have when moving a user to Lync Online.
My client has a Dirsync and Adfs working perfectly with o365.
My problem is that when I try to move a user to Lync Online I have this error :
    Move-CsUser -Identity "Username" -Target sipfed.online.lync.com -credential $cred -hostedmigrationOverrideUrl "https://admin0e.online.lync.com/hostedmigration/hostedmigrationservice.svc"
"Move-CsUser : Unable to write to Active Directory due to lack of permissions"
Like the error said, it's a lack of permission but what kind of permission do I need to make this work ? I've tried to googleit/technetit but no helpful topic found...
Thanks in advance for your help and answers.

    Hi,
Did you solve the issue by adding the account to RTCUniversalUserAdmins group?
To move an on-premises user to your Lync Online tenant, run the following cmdlets in the Lync Server Management Shell, using the administrator credentials for your Microsoft Office 365 tenant. Replace "[email protected]" with the information for the user
    that you want to move.
You can try to move the user from Lync Server on premises to Lync online with the help of the link below “Move users to Lync Online”:

  • Mac Mini (Mid 2010) Unable to write to external HD

    Hey All,
I have a Mid 2010 Mac Mini that becomes unable to write to a drive after an extended period of the drive being connected. HD is an external HD with it's own power supply connected of USB. Both iTunes (Using the drive to store Library) and Finder fail to write to the drive with error (-50) after around 10 hours. Tested multiple times, unmount and re-mounting drive temporarily fixes issue.
    Trouble shooting so far:
         • HD has been replaced.
         • Mac Mini has been re-imaged multiple times. Tried server 10.7.2 and client 10.7.2
         • Multiple USB ports have been tested.
Thoughts? Drive is a 2TB LaCie Porsche Design.
    Thanks in advanced,
    Tim.

If you use Parallels then you will need at least 4 GBs of RAM. Otherwise, what makes you believe you need more RAM? What typical RAM usage do you observe using Activity Monitor? Also, see:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Aperture will not open library - permissions not correct -- but they are

How do I get Aperture to open a library when I get an error message saying the permissions are not correct, but the permissions are correct, and other libraries open fine?
I was using Aperture current version with a library on an external drive connected via airport extreme. I imported about 15 images to an existing project in that library and was editing the images when Aperture closed suddenly. When I try to reopen the same library I get an error message that says Aperture does not have access to that library because the permissions are not correct. But the permissions are set to everyone read write. Aperture opens other libraries on the same drive with the same permission setting.
    1. I ran disk utility repair permissions -- it says it fixed permissions on my laptop internal drive, but disk utility does not recognize the external drive so apparently it did nothing on that drive. Same error message on that library.
    2. I deleted user name >> Library >> Preferences >> com.apple.Aperture.plist and tried opening the library again. Same error message.
    3. I tried rebuilding the library using control command Aperture. Same error message.
    4. I used "show package contents" on that library and moved the project I had been working on when Aperture crashed to another drive and created a new library and imported the project successfully. Works.
I read through existing topics and found suggestions like 1-4 but none work for me.
I would be grateful for any help!
    Thanks.

Please tell me you aren't trying to do this wirelessly!?!
If you're wired to the Airport Extreme, that's better, but forget about running a remote Aperture library on a wireless connection! Even wireless 802.11n isn't fast enough, though I'm sure someone will argue that.
Still, the Airport Extreme only has a USB interface, which is painfully slow! Firewire 800 is supported on all the new MacBook Pros and on the 17" "gen1" MacBook Pros. I'd highly recommend a FireWire 800 external hard drive or even a eSATA interface if you're running Aperture libraries remotely!!
Depending on your total storage needs, just replace your internal MacBook Pro's hard drive. I've replaced a few in the past couple of weeks in some MacBook Pros to the 320GB WD Scorpio drive. Also buy a cheap (~$20) external USB enclosure for your old hard drive to repurpose your old internal drive and aid the restoration of your data. Next install the drives and use Migration Assistant to restore your data to precisely where you were before the hard drive upgrade. Pretty easy except for the actual install of the hard drive in the MacBook Pro, which can be tricky and requires special Torx tools; certainly more complicated than the standard MacBooks. Unless you know what you are doing here, pay someone skilled to do this for you.
Seriously, I'm sure part of your problem is the lousy transfer speeds for Aperture trying to read data, causing data corruption, especially when you force quit so often.

The hard drive on my MacBookPro recently crashed.  The Apple store replaced it.  Since then I can't open iphoto.  It asks to rebuild library; when I click yes, I get: "Aperture cannot access this library; reset permissions." I don't own Aperture!  Any thoughts on how I can rebuild the iphoto library?  Currently I can't even get into it.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

  • Trying to install/format an INTERNAL hard drive using Disk Utility gives me "Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device".   Is that a hardware problem and what could be done about it?

*** PLEASE NOTE*** - This is a query about an INTERNAL HDD not an external one. Thanks.
My Mac is a late 2009 model and the current hard drive recently failed. So I bought a new one, exactly the same, albeit 750gb instead of 500gb. The HDD is a Seagate Momentus 7200. Before the my current drive failed I made a time machine back up to an external USB HDD. I've inserted the HDD into the bottom of my Mac, plugged in the USB and started my machine pressing the 'Option' ([ALT]) key. I go into Disk Utility to try and format the new HDD by creating a new partition but I keep getting the messages,
"Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device"
    or
    "POSIX: could not allocate memory"
This is actaully the third HDD I've tried. The first was another Seagate Momentus 7200 500gb, but this time it was a newer model (model number ended in 423AS instead of 420AS - the new one I am trying ends with 420AS, which is the same as the current HDD). I then tried a Western Digital drive but that one didn't even show up in DU. Forums and tech support are suggesting it's faults with the HDDs but surely not three in a row?
Could this be an issue with another part of my Mac?
Is there anything else I can do to format the HDD, have I missed a crucial step?

Did you ever get a resolution to this issue?
I am having that exact error with a new 512GB SSD from Crucial, in a 15" MBP mid-2010.
I really wonder now if the stupid SATA cable could be bad - causing the initial SSD fail.  I am replacing it with the EXACT same drive, and getting that "last block" error when i partition in the GUI or from command-line.
    thanks!
