Aperture - Unsupported Image Format

All of a sudden when trying to open images I have previously been able to open, I get a black box with a grey triange, exclaimation point in the middle od the triange and the message "Unsupported Image Format". This is happening on my 27" iMac and my MacBook Air, all updates are current for both OS and software. Has anyone else been getting this? Any solutions?

If it's just a single image, it could be a corrupt file. Unfortunately SD cards do occaisionally have issues. The image you are seeing at first is the embedded JPEG which it shows until it finishes processing the raw (or building it's own preview). So even if the raw is corrupt (and this is only possibility - it might be fine) you will be able to at least extract the JPEG using sometiming like the free IJFR app - instant jpeg from raw.
You can try 'Reprocess Original' and/or 'Update from original', it occasionally helps (I had 4 ORF files in a batch show as unsupported which were then fine after 'Reprocess Original'.
Also you cn try relocating the original, say to your desktop (which makes it a referenced file), then delete in Aperture and empty the Aperture trash but without deleting the referenced file (the one on your desktop). Then you can try importing it again from your desktop.

Raw Files Appear Deleted or Corrupted Suddenly in Aperture with Unsupported Image Format Error

I have been using Aperture 3, latest update, for the past year. Today, I tried to import new raw files from my new Sony RX1r and, as far as I can see, all raw files in Aperture give the "Unsupported Image Format" and alert symbol in the library where not only new files should be, but also ALL PREVIOUS RAW FILES. These files do no even show up as existing in the iPhoto Library.
This is, needless to say, distressing, as hundreds and hundreds of photos seem lost. Also, the files show a reduced pixel size and file sizes all go to .5 Mb. Some of the photos seemed to show up initially and look fine until I tried to open them, then they all either disappear or show the Unsupported Image Format instead of the opened file. I have tried rebuilding the iPhoto library, but no help.
I have looked in these discussions and see similar problems with Aperture. Perhaps, Apple has not made an update for the RX1r from the RX1 for raw files, but why should all older raw files now be corrupted, especially those recently made with my Olympus OM-D? Had no problem with Aperture until this disaster.

Just an update. Restarted computer and attempted rebuilds of iPhoto library a couple more times and finally files and photos mostly recovered, except for those I had tried to open. Aperture seems to have a problem, or a host of them, dealing with RAW files, and there is no update yet for the Sony RX1R for Aperture or iPhoto. Lightroom 5, on the other hand, seems to work great with these files directly, so that will be where all photos go for now. Will iPhoto and Aperture just become old archives? It is so infuriating that Apple does not allow for simple importing and exporting compatibility with such an excellent program as Lightroom 5 just to protect their somewhat poorly supported Aperture. I've been a staunch Apple supporter and user since the 80's, but having more doubts about the direction this company is taking.

Aperture 3 and DNGs from LX5 raw files: unsupported image format

My LX5 arrived, and I tried converting a raw file to DNG with Adobe DNG Converter 6.2.0.21 beta and importing it into Aperture. No luck: Aperture says it's an unsupported image format. I tried setting the compatibility as far back as possible in the preferences, and still no luck. Any idea why this doesn't work? I used Adobe DNG Converter multiple times to work with raw files from unsupported cameras, so it's a real surprise to get the unsupported image file message.

Unfortunately, this is more about Apple dragging its feet than a cutting edge issue. I got an LX3 and upgraded to Aperture 3 in February of this year. RW2s straight out of the camera always imported just fine. However, I've never been able to get a DNG generated from an RW2 with Adobe DNG converter to work. Interestingly, DNGs from another file format I use (PEF) work fine in Aperture.
I submitted a issue report to Apple about the RW2 to DNG problem back in March, and like so many other suggestions to them, it seems to have vanished into the ether.

10.5.2; Canon 1DsM3 Raw Files = "Unsupported Image Format" in Aperture

Just did the update and pointed Aperture to a folder of Canon 1Ds Mark III raw files (standard raw files, no sRaw or anything like that). Thumbnail previews are grey and Viewer says, "Unsupported Image Format".
Tried rebooting and verifying/fixing permissions. No help. No thumbnails, no images in Aperture.
Canon 1Ds Mark III raw files do show fine in the finder and in Quick Look.

I have the same exact issue.
I do get the same error with 1Ds MIII raws.
Also the G9 raws are not working.
Finally after 3 months it's still not working
I could imagine that there is the need to edit some property file (like I have read before in the forum somewere) to add the new cameras to the list of supported cameras.
Are the D3, D300 raws working?

Why do G3 raw files show as "Unsupported Image Format" in Aperture?

I am moving towards shooting in raw, and as an experiment I imported some sample raw files from the publicly available text images on the Photography Blog. When I try to look at these images, I get a black screen with a warning triangle and the message "Unsupported Image Format". This happens for all the different raws, including some G3 raw files (.rw2). Oddly, it can read the EXIF metadata and has all the information about shooting settings etc. If I import the same files into iPhoto, it displays the images properly and allows editing, etc.
I have a workaround, which I've also tried with my Fuji X10 raws (still not supported on MacOSX), of running them through the Adobe DNG converter, and then looking at the dng files which seem to work fine. But it's a pain.
This has to be one of those simple "D'oh" things, but I can't see what I'm doing wrong!

Thanks Leonie, the second part revealed that I have been an idiot, although the behaviour is still surprising. The folder has a mix of DMC-G3 raws, Fuji X10 raws, and DNG files produced from both. For the Fuji X10 files, the DNGs produce images and the raws produce the "Unsupported file format" message. The latter is not surprising, the former a little surprising (as I've heard that DNGs only work when the associated raw works). The last two remarks don't directly address my problem (or perceived problem), but they perhaps set the frame for my expectations.
For the G3 files, when I look at it more closely, the G3 raws DO display correctly, while the G3 DNGs give "Unsupported file format". I had managed to fool myself into thinking it was the other way round (Aperture does rather hide the full file name).
So I was completely wrong, Aperture does support DMC-G3 raw, it's just it's DNG support that's a bit weird. However, it's on my side if I need to use X10 raws (via the DNG step). In fact so far I've given up the latter, as the noise levels are so much greater than in Fuji's in-camera JPEG conversion.
So, thanks very much for your help. Now I remember the first rule of system support: never trust what the customer tells you! (I know you're not really customer support, but I guess the same rule applies.) Thanks again

CR2 as "Unsupported Image Format" on Aperture 2.1.2?

I just installed aperture on OS 10.5.5 and immediately installed the available update via Software Update. Then, I imported a day's worth of shooting from my EOS 1D Mark iii (one of the models listed on Aperture's Supported Raw Formats webpage - http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html). The .jpegs display fine but my CR2 images only appear as preview thumbnails - when I click on the preview a red box appears with the text: "Unsupported Image Format." I'm a bit incredulous that Apple would fail to support this enormously popular image format - say it ain't so.

Excellent information that confirms my experience. It has only happened to me in the midst of an editing session, and has always been corrected by a restart of the application.
I don't know if it answers Alexandra's original question.
I have also found that Aperture has gotten progressively slower over the last few months, perhaps a function of a growing managed library?? It's to the point where if I edit to fast, I'll start getting beachballs, and have even had the app quit -or go to the red screen/unsupported file type message.
I don't have the latest machine, but it is a fast one, (Mac Pro Quad 3.0 Ghz 11 gb ram and the nVidia 8800 GT graphics card driving 2 23" Cinema Displays) My startup drive is a 750GB Seagate Barracuda partitioned 250/500 with everything but the Aperture library on the 250 partition (100 gb free space left) and only the Aperture library on the 500 partition (aprox 200 GB free). (there are also 3 more 750 gb drives in the machine for Time Machine & other stuff.
This machine should be really fast (it once was) so I may be doing something wrong, but can't figure what is wrong.
Is anyone aware of an article on speeding up aperture? My previews are limited to the default (2500 x2500 aprox) yet my activity window always seems to have a backup of previews to be built once I'm going in an edit session.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Aperture 2 Unsupported Image format?

I'm a fairly new Aperture user, having received Aperture 2 as a gift and just installed it to my new iMac. When uploading RAW files from a Canon 5DII I get a message which reads: unsupported image format. I updated the app via Software Update in the Apple file. What do I need to do to get Aperture to work? I'm pretty sure it also won't recognize jpegs from my camera...

that's kinda my gut instinct about Ap2 and Lion too. I'm talking to Apple about this too but, guess what, they haven't come back with a conclusive answer yet - hence i'm scouring the forums to see if anyone else has already asked Apple the same question and got a definite yes or no out of them.
i've bought and tested Lion and like many of the new features and dislike quite a few too, but given the choice, i'd probably stay on SL for Ap2 (and Front Row, Apple!!). But my hand may be forced as my SL machine is dying and Apple say they won't repair but will give me a new MBP - which only comes with Lion - and Apple have confirmed that the new MBP firmware will not run SL... hence my frantic scramble to see if I can still run Ap2 on Lion
My gripes with Ap3 are too numerous to mention and here isn't really the place to discuss but biggies for me are the removal of gridlines from the Straightening tool and the removal of the ability to use a single keystroke to go from Ap3 windowed Browser mode to viewing a single image in Ap3 full screen - yes, you can go from Ap3 full-screen Browser mode to single image with a keystroke, but staying permanently in Ap3 full-screen Browser mode is not possible as many actions are not available in Ap3 full-screen mode and you have to go to Ap3 windowed mode to access them - in fact some actions actually kick you out of Ap3 full-screen Browser mode back into Ap windowed mode...
if that makes any sense... had to insert 'Ap3' a lot to avoid confusion with the new Lion full-screen mode or i end up saying things like 'changing from Lion-Windowed-Aperture-Windowed mode to either Lion-Full-Screen-Aperture-Windowed mode or Lion-Full-Screen-Aperture-Full-Screen mode...'

Aperture 2.1.4 - 'unsupported image format'

Aperture has suddenly gone haywire. All photos apparently lost as they all disappeared and 'unsupported image format' appeared for each one instead - but at the same time they are all showing in the thumbnails at the foot of the screen. They are all JPEGs. So I reinstalled the program, etc and now all photos reinstated except for all scanned images (from various Albums) and a few ordinary photos from one Album. Those exceptions are all JPEGs. I have tried the possible solutions on Apple's 'Aperture 2: Troubleshooting Basics' page but they do not help. Some, but not all, of the missing photos will also not appear when I go into iPhoto and go to File - Show Aperture Library. But some do. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

Thanks. The short answer is No. The best situation is from the most recently reinstalled version of Aperture where the result is as described in my previous post. Older versions all seem to be corrupted in the way I described.
A longer answer involves another problem I had. I add geo metadata (probably the wrong term!) to my photos so that, when imported to a mapping program, they show where they were taken. Then, when I put those photos on my iPhone, the mapping feature (Places) also showed where the photos were taken. But then, without warning, all this data was lost from the phone and the mapping feature no longer worked, although it continued to work on the computer. I asked the Genius people at an Apple store about this, but they had no idea and could not help. Now, in respect of the photos restored in Aperture where the 'Unsupported Image Format' message no longer appears, the feature has started working again on my phone.

"Unsupported Image Format" in Aperture and iPhoto....

I recently purchased a Nikon D7100 and when I try and upload the RAW pictures to Aperture 3 and iPhoto it gives me the error message "unsupported image format". It only happens with the RAW files, JPEG's are fine. Is this a problem with the program?

You are just going to have to wait until Apple adds support for the D7100 RAW format.

Not happy to import my first RAW photos into Aperture 3.5.1 only to find it can't display them. I get Unsupported Image Format. I suppose this means I have to wait for a RAW compatibility update. Am I right? This is a new camera.

I cannot find your camera on these lists. Your raw support version is the latest release, so there is nothing you can do about it, but wait, if and when the camera will be supported by Apple.
Try, if you can develope the raw with the software that came with your camera and convert it to TIFF or another lossless format, then import it to Aperture, or try, if the free Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh can develope them.
Added: Apple does not support all cameras, but will give priority to the cameras that most likely will be used by professionals. So it is a good idea to send feedback to Apple, to let them know that raw support for this camera is required. Use this form:

Aperture 2, OS 10.6.4, and Pentax K-x, creates unsupported image format

Upgraded from 10.6.3 to 10.6.4, and started getting the "Unsupported Image Format" problem in Aperture again for my RAW DNG files from a Pentax K-x.
The previous fix was to remove the Raw Compatibility Upgrade, and reinstall the 3.0 version. (3.03 was the installed version after 10.6.4).
Doing this, I was able to view my images, but they show up as only 250 x 170 pixel images in Aperture metadata!
File size is what it should be (~10MB), but they are dinky little images. What the heck?!!!
Any ideas what's going on here?
I would upgrade to Ap 3, but still see tons of people reporting problems with it supporting Pentax, especially color shifting of RAW images after upgrading.
Suggestions appreciated!

Hi David-- thanks for your advice. I have been looking into it further and it just gets more confusing. I am able to open all of these DNG files in Photoshop so the problem seems to be with some combination of the K-X, OS 10.6.4 and Aperture 2. I have gone so far as to purchase Aperture 3 but haven't opened the package yet. After hearing about your experience (not to mention the thousands of other complaints about Ap 3 performance I've seen) I think I'll take it back and make the switch to Lightroom 3. Lightroom's features may not be quite as good, but at least it seems to be stable and I imagine it will be able to read the DNGs since Photoshop does. I just don't have the energy to be constantly patrolling the state of my photo management program!
I'll keep you posted on my experiments with Lightroom.

"Unsupported Image Format" in Aperture after editing in Photoshop?

I've had random intermittent problems with some files that I store in Aperture (I'm on 3.4.3) and then edit in Photoshop. I shoot only in RAW format on a Nikon D300 (.NEF files), and the images import fine. Some of the images I edit in Photoshop CS6. Upon saving the image in CS6 and returning to Aperture, I get a black preview image with a silver warning triangle, and it says "Unsupported Image Format". The info tab shows me that the image is a .tiff file as I expect - and what's odd is when I re-import these images from the folder they're stored in, they display fine as expected.
What gives?

All good questions, thank you for asking.
- Aperture is set up to export to 8-bit TIFF files.
- Photoshop is set as my external editor.
- To edit an image, when I'm in Aperture I right click on the image and select "Edit with Adobe Photoshop CS6"
- I don't use Layers in Photoshop, so when the image is returned to Aperture there's only the background layer.
- The images are saved in PS using "Save", not "Save As".
- I verified that the file names are .tiff rather than .tif
That is exactly what I am doing, when editing my Canon Raws in PS-CS6, and there is no problem with unsupported image formats. that should work!
and what's odd is when I re-import these images from the folder they're stored in, they display fine as expected.
Where is this folder? Are the images referenced? And if referenced, are they on an external drive? How is the drive connected and formatted?

Unsupported image format following update to Aperture 3.4.1

Following the update to Aperture 3.4.1 I can not use the JPEG file as the orignal in a RAW + JPEG file import. When I right click on an RAW + JPEG paired image and ask to use the JPEG as the original from either my Canon 5D Mark II or Canon 7D images the screen goes black and says Unsupported Image Format. I then ask to use the RAW as the original and I can see the RAW image. I've tried out other camera makes of RAW + JPEG images and the JPEG can be seen no problem. I've sent Apple a feedback comment on this.
I'd like to know if anyone with Canon 5D or 7D mixed RAW + JPEG images is having the same problem, or possibly any other Canon camera as I suspect this could be isolated to Canon files.

Assuming you've placed your aperture library in the default folder that Aperture wants to place it (within your pictures folder) then you should find your Aperture.plist file in this folder (~/Library/Preferences). The file to look for is called com.apple.Aperture.plist, make sure you do not have Aperture running at the time you delete this file.
I can't guarantee this will sort out any of your problems but you never know!
Also I understand this file is a simple file that tells Aperture what all your preferences are in terms of set-up and appearance, so if you've made lots of appearance adjustments from the normal way that Aperture looks on a first installation you may want to make comprehensive notes about how you have it looking etc so you can re-do those preferences.
I simply have left it looking as it did after first installation hence I was not concerned about deleting the file as the very next time you run Aperture it creates the file based on your current preferences.
I'd be very interested to know if anyone is experiencing a similar problem that I am as it's quite weird.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.5 on a late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8Gb 1333 MHz DDR3 and all software including Aperture is fully up to date and I store me images solely in the Aperture library. The problem is only showing up on Canon JPEGs.

Aperture 2+D5100+.NEF(RAW)/JPG=Unsupported Image Format

First off, I am new to all this...
But anyway....Last night, for the first time, I imported images directly from my Nikon D5100 memory card onto Aperture 2. (Yes, I know there is an Aperture 3. I am just trying this one until it is something I decide I want to put the money in to...then I will get Aperture 3.) It appeared as though everything was going well because I could see the thumbnails/ previews along the bottom in my browser. So, I went ahead and deleted the images from my memory card. Then, when I clicked on an image to edit it in the viewer, I got a red screen with white writing that says "Unsupported Image Format." Boo! Is there ANYTHING I can do to recover my images? And secondly, is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?
A few suggestions from looking around online that I have tried:
***Opening Aperture while holding down Opt+Command and then selecting: "Rebuild Now" and also the "Consistency Check" buttons.
***Opening: Finder- Library- Preferences- and then deleting com.apple.aperture.plist
The only change from doing all that is now my thumbnails don't appear- instead it just appears as though they are loading...
Again, working with Aperture 2, camera is a Nikon D5100, image format is both RAW (.NEF) /JPEG, (only the RAW file is showing up) and "Unsupported Image Format" message appears when I click on image and try to edit in the viewer.

Aperture gets "Unsupported Image Format" on some JPG images

I'm using Aperture 1.5.2 "trial" on PB 15" with OSX 10.4.9. I am getting "Unsupported Image Format" on about half of the 15,000 JPG images that I have on my HDD. But not all of them - even though all images come originally from my D100 camera and are JPEG images. These are all JPEG images with extensions JPG, jpg and jpeg. No RAW or TIFF.
My images are currently catalogued in iVew MediaPro [IVMP] and I'm interested in switching to Aperture. So I've gotta find a way to import those photos.
Here's a clue: When I put the CF card from my camera into the computer yesterday and tried to add the images to Aperture it reported that all the images on the CF chip were "Unsupported Image Format." I was not copying the images - just leaving them im place. As a test, I then used IVMP to import from the CF card onto the HDD, into a directory. Afterward, I fired up Aperture and it could properly index and display the files. I noticed that the pre-existing images that are viewable in Aperture all have previews when viewed in the Finder. Also, they've all been imported from CF to HDD using IVMP, so there may be some processing going on there. I also tried reading files into Photoshop and rewriting them with previews, which I verified in the Finder, and those files also can not be viewed in Aperture. So it is not just a question of having a preview - it's something else about the files.
Another clue - when I shoot more than one CF of photos in a day, I use IVMP to import the first CF batch, and those are always visible in Aperture - but IVMP doesn't let you import two batches on the same date (pretty goofy huh?) - so to import an additional batch I have to (Finder drag-drop) copy from the CF to the HDD into a directory - and those files have no previews, have not been imported thru IVMP, and interestingly are not viewable in Aperture.
So I'd have to conclude that iView MediaPro is doing something to "tame" the files' format that makes them acceptable to Aperture. But I want to dump IVMP, so there has to be some other way to make these D100 files acceptable to Aperture.
I either need to "fool" Aperture into reading the files or find a way to tweak 'em and make 'em acceptable to Aperture. Any ideas from other iView/Aperture users out there?

Good idea, but I checked it... I mentioned reading right from the card in order to illustrate that the JPG files are "unsupported image format" even *right from the camera*. *In fact* the CF is not the differentiating factor between renderable and non-renderable. The real factor is whether the files went thru iView Media Pro or not. Files that were drag-dropped from the CF into a folder are not renderable by Aperture and files that were imported first (from the CF or from another folder) thru IVMP into a folder are renderable.
Yesterday I confirmed again that GraphicConverterX does not fix the files if I import and then rewrite with additional options turned on. It also sees the same IPTC data and EXIF on both a "good" file and a "bad" file. Identical. I also fixed the OS9 creator and filetypes so they're <none> and that didn't fix anything - some good files and some bad files have this configuration.
Ah another COOL THING - I just loaded a CF card into the computer and brought up Aperture - it immediately recognized the card and showed me two previews - one for a NEF (Nikon RAW) and one for a JPG. The previews looked fine. I clicked to have it import the photos. Once imported, the NEF looked OK, but the JPG had a grey preview and then "Unsupported Image Format" on the large version. I think this confirms the file format is a problem, but then why was Aperture able to gen a preview when the file was on the CF chip but not after it was copied to the HDD?
I double-checked this by copying in Finder drag-drop from the CF card to the HDD and then importing the same two photos (NEF and JPG) from the HDD, and indeed the NEF was renderable and the JPG was not. For me this confirms that there's something about the file format that Aperture can't deal with.
I then imported the same two files using IVMP (Media Pro) and as expected, both files could then be "imported" and rendered by Aperture. So IVMP is doing something that makes Aperture really happy.
In case someone can actually compare the two files - I have put up a "bad" and a "good" JPG - it's the same image from a Nikon D100, but one of them (bad) is right from the camera and the other (good) was imported by IVMP and somehow is acceptable to Aperture. Any intelligence that anyone can add based on these files would be useful.
