Aperture using NAS?

Does Aperture work with a library that is stored on a NAS device (not Mac formatted, non-AFP)?
Eric

It's not recommended . See : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252

  • Aperture with NAS

    Hi,
New to a Mac, and had been trying to use iPhoto.
My issue is that I have a NAS with all photos on, I've bought a MacBook Air with 128gb SSD so don't really want to be storing a lot locally.
iPhoto didn't seem to meet my requirements, as it was all or nothing... i.e. Library either locally or remotely. Locally - my photo directory is 120gb... so no room locally. Remotely - its not very fast as I use the air over wireless.
I read a few sites and it seems that Aperture might work for me, as I can have the master photos on NAS and thumbnails etc locally.
I ideally want to use the application to view photos, tag faces and locations, print photos, make books etc - there will not be that much editing going on. Additionally, I will be copying my photos manually to my NAS initially and then importing from there into Aperture.
I've downloaded the 30 day trial, but not sure how to accomplish what I need!?
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

    More to the point:
Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
While the liked KB article refers to the Library's location, users here have reported trouble with Masters on NAS.  Aperture's handling of Referenced Masters works very well for those with laptops.  The proper installation, however, is with locally-mounted external drives.  NAS may prove to be troublesome.  Personally, I recommend against it.
Again -- putting some or all of your Library on your SSD, and some or all of your Masters on an external drive, would give you a robust, speedy, and flexible set-up.

  • Hi I have two questions. I am using NAS 4.1 and was wondering is it possible to set a different session timeout for different users? How is the session timeout set? Thanks, YS

<i>I am using NAS 4.1 and was wondering is it possible to set a different session timeout for different users?</i>
Um, there is no such thing as NAS4.1.
I'm assuming that you mean NAS4.0 (maybe NAS4.0sp1?). If so, then the session timeouts are specified in the session section of the NTV configuration files.
AFAIK, you can specify session timeouts on a per user basis.

  • Is it possible to use NAS storage (which is wired via LAN to AirPort Extreme) as a Time Machine destination?

Is it possible to use NAS storage (WD My Cloud EX2 or WD My Cloud EX4) which is wired via LAN to current AirPort Extreme, as a Time Machine backup destination?
There are two reasons I came up with this question.
    - Connecting via Ethernet should be faster than USB 2.0 connection
    - 8TB NAS storages are slightly cheaper than 8TB USB HDD
If it is impossible, I am planning to buy My Book Thunderbolt Duo 8TB and wire it for MacBook Pro directly for the purpose of Time Machine backup.
I have a concern with my primal idea of backing up via WiFi, as I tend to handle big files when doing music production or movie editing. I wonder if this affect the performance of MacBook Pro, as it might take more time to complete each backup via WiFi.
Many thanks for your advice in advance,
    Masa
MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch (Mid 2012)
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7

I would appreciate any advice which could include aother sollition of secure and practical backup.

  • Questions on preview quality and where Aperture uses them

I have been reading Apple's Aperture articles about preview quality and how Aperture shares images with the outside world. I had always assumed that the full quality image in Aperture was used for printing, exporting and sharing, but it seems that, at least for sharing, it is the preview that Aperture creates that is shared.
I have just increased the quality of the previews that Aperture generates from 5 to 9 and forced Aperture to re-render all previews. It seems to me that the images on screen and in slide shows and other iLife documents, are now much clearer and brighter (the downside of this is that my Aperture library file has grown by 4 gigabytes).
This leads me to ask four questions about Aperture and preview use (if I may?).
Is a jpeg on a high setting (9) visibly better than one on a medium setting (5), or am I being led to see what I expect to see?
Apart from editing, slideshows and iLife and iWork documents, in what situations does Aperture use previews where high or low quality might make a difference?
Does Aperture use previews to compile photo books? If so, does the quality of the preview affect the quality of the final printed book?
Is it possible to set Aperture to produce high quality previews for images above a certain star rating and low quality previews for the rest?
Thanks for any answers you may have.
    Alasdair

Previews are used within Aperture to quickly show an image in the main viewer before the master has been fully loaded, they are also used to see the referenced masters even if the external location is not available at that moment (not adjustments can be done then, but at least you can see the image)
Previews are used outside Aperture to share the images with adjustments without exporting every image. It comes in handy that you can drag an image from Aperture's browser to another app or the desktop (what you get there is the preview). iMovie or other iApps use previews, the bigger size and quality the better quality you'll get.
Once you set up the size and quality of the previews in Aperture's Preferences the previews are created with those settings. I guess you could lower the settings, in the browser select the images you don't need big previews, ctrl+click and 'update preview' to force create low res previews for those. After that you can put the settings back. But if you do any change to those images the previews will be updated. Certainly I don't see the point of having different previews, do some test find the settings that work best for you and keep it like that.
Turn automatic previews off and create manually the previews you need, I have a smart album with images rated 3 or more stars and I use it to select and create previews manually to those images.

  • Problems printing photographs via Aperture, using Canon MP640

When printing photographs via Aperture, using my CanonMP640, I am instructed to turn off my color management, but I don’t know how to do this & Canon can’t help me. The color quality is very poor (whites have a blue tinge and reds come out orange)
Can anyone help or suggest a good quality printer that is compatible with Aperture, and allows me to turn off Color management on the printer.

I have an Epson R320 and all the Epson's printer driver options are available to me in Aperture. My list is slightly different: Print Settings, Color Management, Page Layout Settings, and Extension Settings with the words separated by spaces and each has a capitalized first letter.
I'm wondering if Aperture isn't seeing your Epson driver files. You might want to remove the Aperture plist file from your User>Library>Preferences folder and relaunch Aperture.

I have a leica m9, aperture metadata will not show me the lens aperture used, as it does in lightroom 3, any ideas.

This has been an ongoing issue with this camera for a long time. Search the list here or Google the issue to see the many posts on this.
For whatever reason Aperture is unable to report that data. Some have written that it is because the that particular lens/camera combination does not report the f stop information.
You can always send feedback to Apple see Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback

  • Urgent!! Problem using NAS 3.0 TemplateMapBasic

We are using NAS 3.0. For passing the data to the template,
we are using the TemplateMapBasic object. But due to the requirement after setting the data, once again we need to get the data from this map object and modify it. For getting the data we are using getString() method of TemplateMapBasic. The data being set to this object initially contains some Japanese characters data also. When i am retreiving the data, that time the data is coming in some unreadable format. And this
problem is only coming when i am running the code in UNIX environment. I am getting the data correctly on NT. When i tried to print the system encoding on both unix and NT, the encodings are coming as different. For Unix, the encoding is MS932, whereas for NT, the encoding is coming as SJIS. Please let me know is this problem due to some system encodings problem or it is due to TemplateMapBasic's getString() method.
If anyone faced this problem, please let me know the solution.
    It is very URGENT..
    Thanks..

I am experiencing the same problem with CCA 3.0.1 (EN) and a new SR520W (Fast Ethernet) router.
Attached is a screen shot of the point of failure in the CCA Device Configuration Wizard.
In the Wizard, clicking the Modify button in the WAN configuration page is a repeatable show stopper.
Please let me know with this bug is fixed.  Until then, I will need to do the Device Configuration using a command line terminal.

  • Aperture using PostBox for email

Is there any way to have Aperture use PostBox as the email application when sending photos?

I too am looking at getting this to work. Postbox is Applescriptable. It does have predefined scripts and a dictionary. I have tried using this from their site http://support.postbox-inc.com/entries/509550-applescript-support but have not had success in getting Aperture to open Postbox. Any help would be great!
I actually have got the Postbox provided applescript to open a new message from Aperture>Share>Email but the image does not get attached.

  • Using NAS devices inside zone clusters

I was reading the docs regarding using NAS devices with Sun Cluster. It mentioned installing a vendor supplied package onto each cluster node to support their NAS, for example, NetApp has the NTAPclnas package. We are using Hitachi HNAS and I doubt they have a an equivalent package. (I'm looking into this but my hopes are not high)
What exactly do I need this for? Are there any problems with simply adding the NFS mounts I need to the /etc/vfstab of each zone cluster node?
In my case I will be running our oracle dev/test databases on NFS file-systems and our production clusters will use NFS file-systems for writing RMAN backups into. We aren't using RAC (today) but quite possibly will be moving to RAC in the future.
I was just curious what the level of integration detailed in http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19680-01/html/821-1556/ewplp.html#eyprn provided? Also will using a vanilla /etc/vfstab approach work if Hitachi doesn't have such a package available.
    Thanks for any info.

IIRC, that package provides locking and fencing support. You need to be able to ensure that nodes that are not supposed to be able to write to a piece of shared storage cannot do so. With an NFS server, this is done by revoking the share. The second part is NFS lock release.
So, if you don't have this package, you don't have these features. Without fencing control, you risk data integrity. Without lock release, you risk not being able to access your files.
That said, there are some circumstances when you probably don't need them. Just dumping RMAN backups to a dump area may be OK. I don't know quite enough about RMAN to comment.

  • Getting Selected Project in Aperture using AppleScript

Is it possible to get a reference to the currently selected project in Aperture using AppleScript? In other words, is it possible to get the project containing the currently selected image (which I can get by using "selection")? If possible, how can I do it?

    GIve this a try:
    tell application "Aperture"
    set x to selection
    set x to item 1 of x
    tell library 1
get value of other tag "MasterLocation" of x
    end tell
    end tell
One thing that helps to answer similar questions is to ask for properties of objects. That can reveal more about an object. Another way to help answer these kinds of questions is to ask for available tags in Exif, IPTC, and "other tags" of a particular image version. That will tell you all the available tags that have values assigned for a particular image version. You can then explore those tags to see if what you are looking for is available.
    Hope that helps.

  • Is any user using NAS storage?

Is any user successfully using NAS storage such as synology connected to TC, (not for time machine or backups) mostly for placing your final edited movies, fotos and slides shows, so they can be viewed on the ipads, ipods?
    Thanks for any input

    Hello Yogesh,
Yes you can reset the password for any body using ABAP Code. But for that you really don't need any client number.
If this process is on regular basis, then recommended is to use BAPI for changing the user details Otherwise BDC also works fine.
    => Function Module - BAPI_USER_CHANGE
Call this in the program for resetting the password.
=> CALL TRANSACTION 'SU01' USING InternalTable
This will be executed in the BDC of SU01 transaction recording. Use the Password Change button in the application toolbar of transaction while recording.
    Hope this helps.

  • Nvidia 8800 GT not the best for Aperture use?

I've been reading from barefeats ( http://barefeats.com/harper10.html ) that the 8800 GT is not the best graphics card for Aperture. Actually I don't think they actually tested Aperture, but Motion 3. The Nvidia is a more expensive option than the ATIs, yet it would be worse for Aperture? Has someone specifically benchmarked Aperture 2 (not another pro app, and no synthetic tests of core image) with the 8800 GT against the other cards? Would Apple update Aperture to make it take better advantage of the 8800 GT's strengths (when available in a system)? I hope so. I already got the Nvidia, and am waiting to get a Mac Pro in the summer.

Here's my prelim findings (as posted in another thread). Will come back with more detailed comments after I have a chance to test some more:

I've just put one in my first gen mac pro, too. I can confirm a great deal of improvement over the stock 7300 gt. My prob was when an image had been straightened, cropped etc if I then attempted edge sharpening it was just awful - beachballs in abundance, crappy panning, slower than Capture NX. Now, though, it is fast and pleasant to use. That's the good news. The bad news is either:
    1. Apple put such a puny graphics card in a Mac Pro (sic) in the first place (although it copes with everything except its own Pro photo software)
    2. Apple wrote such idiosyncratic software (leaning on the on-graphics card memory so much) that meant Mac Pro (sic) machines hardly more than a year old couldn't cope without a new graphics card when running Apple's own pro photo software. That and the 7300 is still on the "recommended" list of cards for running Aperture 2.
    Ho and, indeed, hum.
    Cheers
