Aperture very slow on mac pro 8 core

I have a very new mac pro that can't seem to run aperture at a usable speed at all. My 4 year old G5 was able to run it faster, using the same library. When I move between pictures, or even try and change rating, the whole computer comes to a halt and I can't do or click on anything. After about 10 - 30 seconds I can start working again. This is the same with just about any feature in aperture. I have checked the task list and it is empty. This is running with the library on the boot drive and on a secondary drive. The performance is the same. Any ideas??

Library size does matter, and Aperture doesn't handle big libraries well when it comes to speed. It shouldn't matter but it does.
My own library is around 65k images and growing rapidly. If I was to have all these images on one drive, or a RAID, and perform a search of an image with spotlight, I would get results in only a few seconds, with Aperture it's like pulling your hair out and is very painful to perform a search.
If I wanted to search my entire album I must be prepared to watch the spinning beach ball for quite a few minutes, and every click or keyboard type takes another few minutes. I don't know why this is, or why the finder runs rings around Aperture, even iView can perform a whole library search in a matter of seconds.
I think it is because Aperture is trying to show you all the thumbnails or present a graphical view of all the images when you choose library or all images. All I am doing is asking Aperture to consider all the data in all images before I perform my search, but Aperture wants to do everything.
I really hope that the engineers work on this issue for version 2, and also come up with a better captioning window than is currently in use. I use PhotoMechanic to caption everything before it even touched Aperture, which makes Apple's programme by post-event workflow rather than my live workflow. An IPTC window such as PhotoMechanic's would be very welcome. If anyone else agrees please add it to the feedback page.
Anyway, back to the performance. Certain operations, even with plenty of RAM and a good graphics card, can lead to almost snail like performance with large Aperture libraries. I doubt an Octo-Mac (as I like to call them), or even a 50-core Mac with 60Gb RAM and a 20GB video card would make any difference. The application needs updating in that respect.

  • Data transfer very slow on mac pro!! mac H/W unable to fit specifications.

    Hi,
I am installinginternal disks on the quad mac pro and the transfer ratet in the mac are very slow!!!
the disks are: barracuda 7200.10 disks, 500 GB. Sta II 300, max ST3500630AS firmware 3.AAE . throughput:300mb.jumpred off to get the 300.
MAC tells that the QUAD MAC Pro equipment (2x2.66ghz dualcore intel xeon) comes with a 3.Gigabit specification/ 300MB/sec. (Intel ESB2 AHCI, speed: 3.0 Gigabit. AHCI version 1.10 supported)...
And the benchmarks of the disk ST3500630AS show maximum 80MB/sec and a minimin of 37.3MB/sec, average 63.1 MB/sec. (anandtech tests).
According to seagate.com the maximum sustained data transfer rate:78MB/s
but in the mac the reallity is different: I am getting a transfer rate of 22MB/sec!!!!! . with out any application running and only making copy of the files!!!!
that means that the mac is only providing only 1/3 of the expected transfer rate for the disks..
so, is there a way that the MAC Pro gets all the normal transfer rate for those disks???
Is the Quad MAC Pro hardware unable to get the maximum throughput of the disks???
It seems that the mac is unable to get also the average transfer rate of those disks.. how to correct it???
    thanks a lot
    Alberto
ps. just for fun: I am getting a faster transfer rate from an old power pc ,and old pc, and firewire 400 and old ide disks!!! (36MB/seg!!!)

    Yup.
BThe latest Mac Pro are better, so if you have a new or 2 month old unit, Seagate should work, though I think there should be later firmware.
Some would say those drives take the cake or woRSe.

    SEAGATE PUZZLES
+Firmware version 3.AEE or later solves the slow sustained large block write speed issue for a single 7200.10 inside the Mac Pro.+
+The remaining performance issue is slow small random read speeds for one, two, three or four drives. No matter how many drives you configure in RAID 0 sets, the average random read speed for combined block sizes from 64K to 1024K is less than 30MB/s (based on QuickBench 3 testing).+
+Until Seagate fixes this, we can't recommend the 7200.10 series as the ideal boot drive for the Mac Pro (or Power Mac).+

  • Mountain Lion Very Slow on Mac Pro 3,1 (2008 model)

The Mac Pro 3,1 is supposed to support Mountain Lion, but when I run it, the GPU (ATI Radeon HD 2600 that came with it) makes a constant, loud fan noise as if it is working hard, and all of the graphics lag badly. I've installed all of the updates. Is there some driver problem between the Radeon HD 2600 and Mountain Lion? People on MacRumors said that it works fine on a Mac Pro 3,1 except for one guy who said it was really slow. Snow Leopard runs great on my machine.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Very Slow New Mac Pro

I just got my first Mac Pro. I upgraded to Yosemite. It took nearly 5 hours to download. I thought it would have been and internet problem. But then I noticed that almost everything is slow, I am cutting the cord with PC but I expect a difference!
Opening an app takes several seconds. I have seen my friends Macs and they have almost instant opening of apps and all. It seems awfully slow to me.
Also I noticed that RAM is constantly on 3.98 or so, and many times there is only a few MB available. Who is using all the mem?
    Thanks for any advice.

  • Fan Super Loud on Boot, OS Very Slow - 2014 Mac Pro

Hello I have a Mac Pro which I ordered last December and arrived in February. In the last week, I have been noticing most of the time when I boot it up, at the login screen my fan starts going wild and it's so slow that my mouse lags as I move it around. When I boot without any of my peripherals, this does not happen.
Attached to my mac I have:
    USB Apple Keyboard
    USB RAZR Mamba Mouse
USB AudioEngine Speakers (Added a few weeks ago)
    Thunderbolt Apple Display
HDMI to Displayport Samsung TV Display
HDMI Sony 4K TV (Added a few weeks ago)
I'm not sure what could be causing this problem. Has anyone had a similar experience with their Mac Pro's? I ran Apple Diagnostics and it said there were no problems.
Additionally, in your experiences, what is the turnaround time for a Mac Pro repair?

I would test by disconnecting one peripheral at a time.

  • Where can i buy mac pro core 12 64GB (8x8GB) memory?

    64GB (8x8GB)
for the mac pro core 12 memory

Yes.  I've bought a lot of stuff from them over the years.  And in fact when I got my mac pro I bought my ram from them too.  They specifically cater to mac needs.  They have a fairly liberal return policy.  For example, I bought a eSATA card which turned out to not work the way I expected with my external enclosure (also bought from OWC).  I returned it for another make of card with no problems.  Reading these and other mac forums you will see a lot of recommendations for OWC.
And yes, I don't know why the url is macsales.com either.  But it should be obvious from that choice of url they really do cater to mac ('er sales).

  • Very slow running Mac Mini

    Hi,
I'd like to thank all people supporting us (users) in these discussions, and especially the person who helped me restoring my MBP's performance,
I'm requesting once again some help for my Mac Mini which is very very slow.
Mac Mini running OS X Moutain Lion + Apple's Server add-on (a few services are running : file sharing mainly).
    Thanks in advance,

Hello Hedi, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Mac Pro with Aperture - very slow

Why, why couldn't it be faster?
I've been reading about the Mac Pros since they were announced last week. The local Apple store finally got one and I went to go see it. And there it was -- 42 lb glory, standard configuration, driving a 30" screen.
I launched Aperture... and it's slow. I mean really slow, spinning pizza wheel slow. Granted I'm trying to bring up full size raw images that are ~16-18 meg each. But come on -- this is a workstation class machine! The "fastest Mac ever"!!!
Showed it to the guy working there. He said they installed the box today with a brand new disk image and sometimes the image is bad. "Ben" promised he'll call their engineers to see what's up.
So what's going on here? Some ideas:
    * Aperture is very Core Image intensive, and the standard GeForce 7300 card isn't that fast. I plan to upgrade to Radeon X1900XT - people say that will likely make Aperture faster.
    * The photo files were huge, 16 to 18 mb each. Raw images my camera takes are 6 meg. At least until I upgrade my camera.
    * The box had 1gb of memory - standard configuration. Would more help?
    * Maybe there really is something wrong with the box or the disk image.
    Disappointing...
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I dont really post very often here but i think it is yet time to give again out a few pointers about Mac performance ...
    1) Whatever the configuration ... Ram is essential and shall never be ignored .
    2) Whatever the hardware platform your machine is running on check your software version and keep up to date , that goes 20 times for anything Universal Binary.
    3) When treating high volume files Hard drive space is ESSENTIAL and not only necessary and frankly setting up a raid from a Mac is still seamless and fast.
If you all made it through to this point then your mac is becoming a powerhouse never slows down and really smiles and keeps on coming ... i have been running G5 machines for a long time on mac os X servers since the G5s came out and before that were yet G4s . First thing you need when dealing with large files is RAM second drives and third software versions.
I would not dream running anything with 512 mb of ram at all that is a constant on all macs , you have a memory expansion capability to 16GB mmm that shall really help .
Further you have 4 bays for drives ... may i dare think they are here for some reason such as treating high volumes files ?
Third and foremost when using nvidia cards dont expect superb performance on a 30" screen when using the FX4500 card since nvidia cards have a really bad record on that matter with the G5 .. would you deal with massive 3D open GL etc etc etc ... ATI is it plain simple and really outperforming it has always been the case for macs .
Yes, ATI X1900XT are rare now because of delays but the cards are no slugs on a mac and they mean business when running on 30" screens . A pci-x X800xt radeon card running on a previous dual processor machine kept kicking the Quadro running off a PCI-e on a quad machine ... we then tested with a X1900xt prototype and again the world changed .. all the things the nvidia card could not deal with the X1900xt just smiled at and kept on chomping non stop .
I did not still get aperture since i have yet little need for it but my educated guess would be that with a little ram a nice set of raid array (you dont need 15k rpm drives unless you treat live HD solely on a internal array) and or an Xraid setup the machine would just scream in performance. If you use the machine for production processing power of the chip is just a tiny part of the whole performance equation thinking about streamlining your pipelines and data flow takes your setup to whole new grounds.
A quad running 4D server Maya some data backups mysql and about 103 processes is occupied about 10 percent load averages .....
secondly regarding disk images and apple installs errr please take the time to install everything from scratch i am guessing aperture you just have seen running might be using rosetta and is just a transfer from a G5 that would explain performance issues . 18 Mb a picture is not huge ... we use about 100Mg images on PS maya strata etc etc etc and frankly image size with a bit of ram never has been an issue.
    G5 Quad 2.5 7TB xraid 16GB of ram.   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Mac os X server 10.4.7

Completely uninstall the Kaspersky software AND MacKeeper. Both aren't necessary and can cause all kinds of issues.
Also check if Paragon and Virtualbox are up to date.

  • Aperture very slow

Has anyone come across this issue when the MAC just freezes up or runs very slow when aperture in use? its like the things is running on solar energy an its night time! can someone help please? any quick fixes? i run a MAC OSX version 10.7.2, 3.06Ghz core 2 duo, 2GB 800mHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Any insights appreciated

With only 900 MB that doesn't surprise me.
You need to seriously look into either deleting or moving a bunch files.
OmniDiskSweeper will point out the files and folders that are taking up the largest amounts of disk space.
Running with such a small amount of free space has greatly increased the cahnces that your hard drive is corrupt. So after you free up space, you really should boot from another device and repair the disk with Disk Utility.

    things are hanging frequently
When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • ACR 7.1 - very slow on Mac mini

    Hi
I'm running the trial version of CS6 on a new Mac mini.
I like the features in ACR 7.1 but I'm finding it very slow.
Dragging the Temperature slider takes about 5 seconds before the image updates. Is this normal?
This is with just one Nikon D700 Nef open in ACR, and no other apps running. I've already worked the file up, making adjustments to lens correction, sharpening, noise reduction, and using a couple of adjustment brushes.
If I progressively switch these settings off, the Temperature slider gradually goes back to being reasonably responsive. But I'd like to be able to fine tune the colour after doing these other adjustments.
Any way I can speed it up?
    Thanks!
    Mac mini 2.7 i7, AMD 6630, 16Gb RAM, 7200rpm 750Gb HD.
    Eizo CG275W
    Photoshop CS6
    ACR 7.1.0.354
    Mountain Lion 10.8.1

My dedicated CS6/ACR 7.x system is substantially more underpowered than your Mac Mini, yet I see no such lag in ACR.  Dragging the Temperature adjustment slider is practically real-time, with the preview refreshing in a fraction of a second that I can barely see and have no way of measuring.
I'm now running ACR 7.2RC1, but I don't remember seeing a lag in ACR 7.1 either.
My main working machine is a Power Mac (PPC) G5 Quad with 16 GB of RAM, on which 11.0.2 is the last version of Photoshop to run, so I have the Mac-Intel system described below just to run ACR 7.x under Photoshop 13.0.1.  I convert my raw files in ACR7.x open them in Ps 13.0.x and save them via Ethernet to an external HD connected to the G5 Quad for further processing in CS4. The Mac-Intel is used for no other purpose and the only other application I occasionally run on said Mac-Intel is TextEdit.
2007, 2GHz MacBook 2,1, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of RAM (can use 3 GB), 160 GB internal boot disk, dedicated FireWire400 external HD for Ps scratch disk, external Time Machine HD.  Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I literally rescued this MacBook from the trash, where it had landed when my wife was told by local Apple Macgenius staff that it was beyond repair, when in reality all that was wrong with it was a bulging battery exerting upward pressure on the track pad and keyboard.  That was easy to replace for $20 or so through Amazon.com.
So, from where I sit,  either you have a machine-specific problem somewhere, or the culprit in your issue is Mountain Poop.

  • InDesign 5.5 scrolling very slow on Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I am using InDesign CS 5.5 (7.5.3) on a Macbook Pro - 2.4 Ghz Intel Core i7 w/ 8GB Ram and a 250GB SSD and AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphic card - and it's incredibly slow when scrolling up and down in a document. Admittedly that document has lots of big tifs embedded but still it feels very slow and often hangs on the spinning wheel. I've tried a helper app to switch the graphic cards and have also turned preflight off and set live screen drawing to delayed after reading some threads on here. It's especially bad when I come from another application but doesn't seem to make a difference how many other apps are open. Is this normal? Does anyone have any ideas how to improve performance?
    Thanks
    Maak

What about the display perfomance ?
Go to View-->Diaply performance,  set it to Fast or Typical.
Here are few link that could help :-

  • Slow performance Mac Pro

I've noticed recently my Mac Pro loads very slowly, i.e. final cut pro, photoshop, handbrakes, lightroom, etc. Even when clicking on Open, Save, Close, etc, it's not instantaneous as it was before. I've downloaded Onyx and use it to clean out the cache. Restarted the computer and it's back to its normal fast loading. But after using it for a couple of hours, it slows down again. And again, I need to clear out the cache with Onyx, restart before it returns to running normal for a few hours.
I am not sure what is wrong and how I can correct this so it stays permanently fast and not having to rely on Onyx every few hours?

Are you seeing any PageOuts in Activity Monitor? That is another indication you have way too little RAM.
You appear to have made the most important adjustment -- separating your User files off the System/Applications/Paging Drive.
How did you accumulate 240 GB of Applications? My Mac Pro uses less than 17 GB for System and Applications, including the page file. (Admittedly I do not have CS-anything or Final Cut Pro.)
When you edit, are you storing source and destination on the same drive? Doing that forces reads to compete with writes and causes endless re-positioning of the drive heads. Each seek costs you an additional 10 to 20 milliseconds ( 0.010 to 0.020 seconds) of time wasted, which can quickly add up. Editing from one drive to another is much faster.
When you edit, are you actually dipping into Scratch? Scratch is an "extender" that allows you to edit stuff that is way too big for your system, but s-l-o-w-l-y. Using it in any substantial amount is an indication you have too little RAM.

  • PP CS4 very slow on MAC

I have noticed that when running a 1 hr sequence (wedding), my ability to use the CTRL D short cut for the default transition is VERY slow.  I get the spinning wheel of death and then the transition appears.  The time line runs fine but anything I do appears as if it is stressing the system out and it cannot perform.  I have 16 gigs of memory on a MAC Pro.  Any thoughts?

You will have to forgive me, as my Mac-speak is horribly limited, but:
1.) what is your I/O sub-system set up, i.e. HDD's size, speed controller and how allocated? This is often the most important link in NLE work.
2.) what is you CPU speed? This is also important in NLE work. RAM is great, but not the end-all in performance.
In general, I've seen very few posts about CS4 being slow on a Mac. I'd offer a wild guess that it's your System's setup, or too many other programs running that saps the resources that any NLE will need.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
