Aperture Video Card Performance Ratings

Does anybody know of a good summary that would include all of the cards that Aperture can use, and some measure of performance or speed, similar to Rob Galbraith’s CF card speed ratings?
I’m having a hard time remembering which card does better (and how much) with Aperture. I know that I can't change the graphics card in my iMac, but I'd like to understand this topic for future reference, as I do plan to buy a new iMac or Mac Pro someday.
I tried to search for this info on this site, but I wasn't able to find such a summary.

Well, new Mac Pro's came early.
The question is what kind of Aperture performance can we expect with the different video cards. The Nvidia 8800GT has a 3-5 week lead time. I don't want to wait unless it'll be worth it. I don't think I'd benefit from a faster card for the other apps I use (Adobe CS3 mainly), but I spend a lot of time in Aperture.
Interestingly, there is a glitch in the Apple Store where draft copy was used to describe the video cards. It mentions that the ATI 3870 was planned:

  • Video Card performance issue

    Hi,
I've notified a bug regarding the switch between the dedicated and integrated video card in my Mac. Assume that the Intel HD is used. Do CMD + SHIFT + 4 (this is the shortcut to make a screenshoot). The cursor is blinking when I move it. Do the same but assure that the dedicated video card is used: the cursor does not blinking. Do you have the same behavior ?
    Thanks.

If the MacBook's iPhoto Library hasn't been upgraded by v.11, yes. Do you still have the installer for iPhoto 09? If you do, then delete the iPhoto application, it's associated preference files and the upgraded Library. Install 09, move the Library from the MacBook and then launch iPhoto 09.

  • Video card performance

Hi all; I'm not a gamer, nor am I graphic artist. For surfing and viewing video (youtube, movies, etc)what advantage over the geforce5200 is there for me to spend hundreds of dollars for a geforce7800gs. I currently use a laCie 22" crt monitor.

Hi...I'm gonna double post this here, now. It's my situation.
Meanwhile, I'll check out all the links provided in the thread.
If this triggers any thoughts or ideas, that would be cool.

I'm doing a trial of Photoshop CS4 Extended and it says: "Some GPU-accelerated features require graphics support for Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0."
My PowerPC G5, Duel 2.3 with the standard ATI Radeon 9600 does not, apparently, have this - since I get a warning message from Photoshop about it.
I have PCI-X slots. I ventured into the topic of video and/or graphic cards before and came away very frustrated and confused, not knowing what year various card were made, not knowing which ones were for PCI, PCI-X or PCI-express, or which ones for Intel only, etc. not to mention trying to discover the specific fact of if it supports Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0
Other then this ONE thing, my computer functions carefree and complete and does everything I want. But now I want to try my hand at mading mods.
If all else fails, I suppose, I'll get one of the new Mac mini's -- since I have, uh...have the keyboard, mouse and video displays. So, is there any big improvement I can make for under $599.00?
Um...does the Mac mini or Macbook video card support for Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0
I'm definitely over my head here, lost in some 3d virtual unreality I can't sort out, 4sure.
    Any help?

  • MBP 17" Video Card reviews

Just wondering, how well does the video card perform? Mainly for gaming purposes

Just wondering, how well does the video card perform?
    Mainly for gaming purposes
The X1600 256MG is a decent video card for gaming, it could be better and it could me much worse. I just put Call of Duty 2 on my MBP and I have the X1600 with 256MG. The quality is fine, I am sure if you benchmarked it you could find better laptops with better frame rates but you would be crossing over to the Windoze world. I have an 6800GT OC on my XP desktop and I can't tell much a difference. Yeah that card is about a year old but I'm pretty sure it out performs the X1600. So in a nutshell, the card is ok for gaming. If you want a laptop just for gaming then you will need to look at the Windoze's laptops.

  • Does aperture require a dedicated video card? If not a requirement? does it improve the performance of aperture?

Does aperture require a dedicated video card? If not a requirement? does it improve the performance of aperture?

Aperture can work with integrated video, but the consensus here is that Aperture is fairly demanding when it comes to graphics cards, as it relies on them for various processes. So, if you have the option to get a machine with a dedicated video chipset, do so.

  • Best video card for Aperture with Power Mac G5

Any suggestions for a good video card to use with a 2.0 GHz dual processor G5 (AGP video). The current card is an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro with 64 MB of VRAM and the performance isn't fast enough to use Aperture for image edits -- sorts and metadata updates work well enough, but something like cropping is too slow to be workable.

I looked long and hard for this card, and after waiting for months to get one, it finally arrived...DOA. I sent it back for exchange, and they had no more in stock, so my money was refunded. I looked again, and luckily found another one at a different retailer. It arrived and worked for about a month before artifacts started showing up. I sent it back to ATI for repair on December 4, and I still haven't gotten a replacement. The latest run of X800 cards that were retooled for ROHS compliance are crap. There are so many defective ones coming to their repair facility that repairs/replacements are taking more than 10 weeks.
That being said, the difference it makes in Aperture over the 9600 is significant, but not earth-shattering. For RAW images, it won't make performance great, but it will at least be tolerable compared to what it is now. There's no other video card upgrade for an AGP G5 that is worth pursuing. Still, it's a rather expensive card at about $300, and considering the quality issues and how difficult they are to find, I'd say it's not worth the hassle. Save up for a new Mac instead. One of the new Mac Pros, even the 4-core model with the Radeon HD 2600 XT, is blazingly fast in Aperture compared to a maxed-out G5.

  • Cropping Crashes Aperture 3 due to Video Card Memory Leak?

Recently after updating from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2 I have been experiencing crashing issues whenever I perform the cropping action.  I see the death of wheel following hitting the return key.  There was one time when the master version itself vaporized into thin air.  I also noticed from the iStat Menus that the issue only occurs when the ATI Radeon HD 2400 memory usage has reach its full capcity.  I quite firefox to release some of the memory then Aperture functions normally until the memory runs out again.  I would then see the death of wheel once again when I crop.
Is Aperture crashing because I need a more powerful video card or is it a memory leak issue with the application?
    Thanks!

What are the common factors between the old and new systems as far as Aperture goes? Not knowing how you migrated from the old to the new the only  thing we can say for certain is that the library is identical.
So have you run the basic library first aid steps? Another thing to try is to create a new empty library, put an image into it and try cropping it and see what happens.
Let us know what happens after those steps,

I migrated everything from the old computer to the new.  I also tried creating a new library and the issue persists.  I've also tried the First Aid options all of 'Repair Permission, Repair Database, and Rebuild Database' none of which worked.  I've also tried reinstalling Aperture and it crashes on the first crop.
I will need to be editing many photos in a few weeks and now I'm stuck with this issue.. HELP!!!!!!!
It seems like others have run into the same issue also but no solutions!!
Why is aperture 3.1 crashing after cropping images, any one else?

  • Optimum video card for Aperture?

Can someone advise me? I'm about to purchase a Mac Pro and am thinking the basic configuration will be the way to go. I can add memory and hard drives more cheaply than it would cost me to upgrade the purchase configuration. The one thing I am wondering is whether to choose the default video card or upgrade to a faster one. My concern is with fast performance from Aperture - I am not a screaming gamer...or a gaming screamer - so I don't have to have anything THAT fast. What has been the experience of others?
Here are the offerings at the Apple store (obviously, the first is the one included in the basic config.):
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB (single-link DVI/dual-link DVI)
    2 x NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB [Add $149]
    ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (2 x dual-link DVI) [Add $249]
    3 x NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB [Add $299]
    4 x NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB [Add $449]
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI) [Add $1649]
    Marion

    Today X1900XT, no question.
However new MPs have been overdue for half a year now. New MPs will have better value in graphics and in mass storage as well as latest generation processors. If at all possible wait until Mac Expo SF January 15 to make any MP purchase decision.

  • Aperture Won't Launch With 2 Video Cards

I use 3 monitors with my G5 Dual 2.5GHz for running a number of programs simultaneously and also for Final Cut Pro editing. In the center is an Apple 23" HD Cinema Display. On the left is an Apple 15" DVI flat screen and on the right is an Apple 15" VGA flat screen.
Aperture will not launch at all. It gives me an error stating that the video card is not supported. The main card is a GeForce 6800 GT DDR that has the 23" and the 15" DVI connected. The problem is the Radeon 7000 that has the 15" VGA hooked up. I took the Radeon out and Aperture ran fine so I know where the problem lies.
Obviously I cannot keep taking the Radeon in an out of the G5 whenever I want to use different programs. Does anyone have any suggestions? I hope Apple will have an update where you can tell Aperture what monitors to use or video card to ignore. That should alleviate the problem. Is there a way of using Terminal to turn off the Radeon which would allow Aperture to run? I just bought this program and was all excited to start using it. Now I'm bummed. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Maybe there is a way to turn the Radeon 7000 on and off through Terminal? Some process I can quit to run Aperture on the 2 monitors connected to the nVidia GeForce 6800GT and then restart that process when I'm done so I can go back to using 3 monitors?
    Thanks.

  • Which video card for Aperture and dual monitors?

I have a G5 dual 2.0 with a GeForce FX 5200 video card that is driving one 23" Cinema display. I need to upgrade my card per the specs to run Aperture. I have also been thinking of getting a second 23" display. Can someone recommend the best video card for me. I know very little about video cards and have been reading a lot this morning. Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave;
No. PCIx and PCIe or PCI Express are not the same thing.
PCIx is an extended or slight sped up version of PCI. While PCIe is a switched bus structure instead.
Hence they are not the same. That is what all of the big news is about Apple has made the leap over to PCI Express.

  • G4 MDD Dual 1.25 - Aperture 2  - Do I need newer Video Card to run the app?

I am hoping someone can help steer me in the right direction. I spent all morning reading about Aperture 2, decided I must have it, downloaded the trial version and THEN found out my computer will not run it. When I try to install it, it says that I don't meet the minimum requirements but doesn't specify exactly what the problem is. The Aperture minimum requirements are confusing to me in that it says Power Mac G5 with Intel processor, BUT it says you can have a G4 Powerbook with a 1.25 GHz processor. My Powermac G4 has a 1.25 processor. Not sure if that is the problem or if it's my video card which is the standard ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. If I replace my video card will I be able to run Aperture 2? If so, which ones would be compatible with my older Mac? — Thanks, mark
I have pasted my specs below:

  • Performance Problems with GeForce FX 5600 256mb Video Card

I recently purchased the GeForce FX 5600 VTD 256mb video card to replace my old ATi Radeon 8500 64mb card.  I'm running an AMD 2800XP+ on an MSI K7N2 Delta-L, with 1gb of PC 2100 on Windows XP Pro.
I installed the latest drivers (from the EGA site) and ran 3DMark 2001 SE.  My score for the old card (a 64mb card) was about 9200.  My score for the new 256mb card is only 8700.  My roommate has a GeForce 4 TI4600 128mb video card.  We put his card in my computer, and I scored 11117.  According to PCStats.com, the FX 5600 128mb version scored about 11000.
I've tried everything I can think of to ensure my video card is working properly,  but I still get low scores.  I don't know if I'm missing something somwhere, but there has to be a way to get more performance out of the video card.  Can anyone help me out here?

Yeah, I've ran the driver cleaner after changing each driver.  And I've tried several drivers with the new card.  I've even changed the clock settings a bit, which has helped bring the scores up to around 9000.  Still way off from the GeForce 4 or the 128mb version of the 5600.

  • I just downloaded Aperture 3.4.1 and now when I try and launch the application i get a warning that the video card doesn't meet the requirements.  I can't find any vieo card requirements for Aperture.  is this another bug?

I had problems with Aperture 3.4.1.  It was telling me that my video card isn't supported.  Funny thing is I was using it earlier today.  I trashed the application and downloaded it again.  Now it hangs up and won't load or I get the occasional note that the graphics card doesn't meet requirements.

    All,
One last trip to the well today and seems llike it is resolved.  The end fix was to create a new user account and then drag my data over from my existing user account.  It seems that there was something within my existing user library that was currupting Aperture causing it to fail to at launch.  Couldn't figure out what exactly, but this seems to have done the trick.  Now i have been working for the better part of the day in a stable manner.  I will update in another day assuming all is well.  Good luck if you have this problem it is a total pain in the a**.

  • Best video card for Aperture

    Hi
Which is for you the best video card built for Macpro to use with Aperture, excluding the1,5GB card from Apple store?
The 8800GT 512 is great one?
I think I'll use in future with an Apple cinema display 23".
    Thanks
    Koferc

Barefeats seems to like the Radeon HD 3870 Mac for the Mac Pros. I ordered my MP with the 8800 GT upgrade, but as steebow posted above it appears the ATI has better drivers, so that the 3870 upgrade seems to be the way to go. Aperture was not tested, but in other Core Image tests it seems to do better on the 3870:

Here's a recent test of 10.55 compared to 10.5.4 for the two cards as well:

The 3870 is available at OWC for $217.99:
