Aperture vs Capture NX

Hi all,
Capture NX has got a feature called "U Point Technology"
http://nikonimaging.com/global/products/software/capturenx/pdf/CaptureNX_catalog .pdf
I'm wondering whether Aperture has something similar or not,
Thanks,

"Name just ONE camera that comes with software that is as good as NX for free? "
Why? I didn't say anything about any other cameras. Second, if the software won't run at a decent speed on a computer that robust enough to run Aperture briskly, then it is of little value to me regardless of the feature set. Third, an NEF file is a proprietary file type designed by Nikon for a specific camera body and they don't give you software that can manage their own file type. I'm a huge Nikon fan (a moderator at Nikonians.org, in fact) but that's just plain cheap when you're talking about cameras that cost over a grand. Canon's software is not as comprehensive (so I'm told) but I understand (could be wrong) that they at least provide you with software that can convert their RAW files for free.
Finally, I'd heard a lot of people say that NX was such a superior RAW converter over Aperture, and I agree that NX does a great job. It is Nikon's converter for Nikon's proprietary file format, so I wouldn't expect anything less. So, I made the comparsion myself between Aperture and NX. Side by side, same image, same computer, no in-camera processing, RAW fine tuning set to make no changes in Aperture. Not only is NX not miles ahead, it is such a close call that I hesitate to say NX is better at all. There are very subtle differences but not necessarily good vs bad differences. Just different. The only area that NX is even remotely superior is in noise control in underexposed shadow areas. And even there it is not dramatic and easily controlled (if you are so inclined since this would not be noticeable at any but the largest of print sizes) by selectively adding noise reduction to these areas which, by definition, contain no detail anyway.
I think one of the main reasons people think NX does a better conversion job is because they don't understand how either NX or Aperture handle camera and import presets.
Regardless, even if I thought NX did a better job at RAW conversion, I still wouldn't purchase it because it is simply too slow for handling any significant number of files. That is the beauty of Aperture, it makes the whole process fast and efficient and from my tests handles conversion just as well.

  • Aperture to Capture One Pro via Catpult -  working

FYI  I figured out how to make the Aperture to Capture One Pro connection work with the Catapult plugin in both directions, preserving repeated image edits in Capture One Pro. We can now use Capture One Pro as a (slightly awkward) plugin for Aperture, many people like their RAW conversion.
I think more could be done to make it simpler, but it is working.
My write up is on the Capture One Forum, here:
    http://forum.phaseone.com/En/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=16675&sid=46e9c25c5f1d3770cc66 be99bda3441d

    Hi,
Aperture is a versatile application, which lets you perform all or at least the most tasks to handle your digital camera image files. It helps a lot to edit files, which means you can select winners and losers very quickly and in a very sophisticated way. It renames files and adds IPTC meta data.
One thing is really cool: It imports your master RAW files und does not touch them any more. When you alter an image (cropping, brightness, white balance etc) this is only written in a data base and Aperture shows you the altered master file in a new preview called Version. This version does not exist physically. It is only a little descriptive text file. When you export your image for delivery Aperture creates real images.
It is possible to automate workflows with Apples´s Automator. Aperture organizes files in a single library but you can export master raw files or tif, psd or jpg copies. Aperture creates niece Websites, and offers book templates for PDF-output or printing via a print service. There is many more. But one thing I should point out: the raw conversion of Capture One Pro is in my opinion much better. More details, better color control. This will get better, I hope with future version of Aperture. We got a version 1.1 now and the developers of Aperture seem to know about our problems. So for me, Aperture is a very cool Workflow tool. RAW conversion is not state of the Art but equal to ACR. And having master file and derivatives alltogether without cluttering the harddisk is very clever. But I will keep my version of Capture One Pro for quality reasons.
I hope this helps a bit.
    (Sorry for weak my english)

    Eberhard

  • Using Aperture and Capture NX 2

I'm using Aperture 3 and have just downloaded the trial version of Capture NX 2. Upon opening CNX2 and opening pictures in the browser, the Aperture library is grayed out. My question really is what should I expect to see upon opening CNX2?

That's exactly what you would expect to see when you try open the Aperture Library with Capture EX 2.
(BTW you know this is the iPhoto 08 forum, right?)
Aperture is a database. If you want to process Raws with NX then you'll need to either process them before importing to Aperture or use an app like Catapult ( http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/31765/catapult/) to use it in association with Aperture.

  • Anyway to share original files from Aperture with Capture One & Lightroom

I would like to use the 10,000 RAW files I have downloaded with Aperture and be able to use them in Capture One and play with Lightroom. I could export the Originals but then I would be doubling or even tripling the space needed to use these 3 programs. All three programs have different advantages and would like to be able to use all three. I'm sure Apple doesn't want anyone to use anything but Aperture but in the real world, Aperture can't do all the things I want to do.
I have found the originals in Aperture (show package contents) but each picture seems to be in a seperate folder and not altogether in a central folder.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jim

Best is way is as Jeff says, use referenced files, then to open a raw file with Capture One simply select it in Aperture's browser, ctrl+click (right click) on it and 'show in finder'. From there drag it to Capture One and done.
To automatically import the result to Apertue you can use a hot folder where the processed file from Capture One should be saved to.
I also need to process sometimes raw images in Capture One, specially those with coloured tungsten lighting. Capture One's white balance is way much better than Aperture's.

  • IPhone with iOS 5 not recognized by Aperture Import

I upgraded to iOS 5 on my iPhone and when I upgraded to Aperture 3.2 (on OSX 10.7.2) Aperture no longer recognizes my iPhone as an import device. It recognizes that something was attached that had photos for uploading on it, but no device shows up.

This is a solution that worked for me that I posted in another thread.
Similar situation: none of Aperture, Image Capture nor iPhoto recognised my iPhone 4 (iOS 5) as a device to import pictures from.
    My solution
    1.  My setting for "When a camera is connected open..." was "No Application."  I changed this to "Image Capture" (as it is the fastest to open).
    2. I unplugged and then reconnected my iPhone.
    3. Image Capture then automatically launched, with my iPhone and all of its pictures ready for import.  The same occurred for Aperture and iPhoto (which I was just using to test).
I have now unplugged and reconnected my iPhone a number of times and have been able to import photos every time, using either Image Capture or Aperture.
    Hope that helps!

  • Aperture doesn't see iPhone 4; sees Canon camera but not photos

From the App Store, I recently downloaded and installed Aperture 3 on my 2008 MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.6. In the preferences for Aperture, Image Capture, and iPhoto, I set Aperture to open automatically when I connect a camera. When I connect my iPhone 4, Aperture doesn't open, nor does the iPhone appear in Aperture when I open Aperture manually. When I connect my Canon Powershot A710IS, Aperture does open, and the camera does appear, but the photos that are on the camera don't appear in the pane (they're JPEG images). I haven't excluded any file types in the Import Settings, and I've tried both JPEG Only and Both (JPEG as Master) under RAW + JPEG. All of this worked fine with iPhoto '09, which is what I was using before I switched to Aperture. If I change the preferences back to what they were, with iPhoto set to open automatically when a camera is connected, it works like it used to. Any ideas? It would be a pain to have to import everything into iPhoto and then transfer it to Aperture.

    Ubele,
I'm afraid I don't know what you mean about reading the Terms of Use. I read them. Did I do so something incorrectly?
No, didn't mean to imply anything was wrong. Some of us in the forum just like to point out the Terms of Use to new users. Sorry about any confusion.
There's also the iPhone issue, where my iPhone doesn't show up at all in Aperture
I don't have an iPhone to help with personal experience. However, I seem to remember other users have reported that they can use their iPhone with Aperture only when iTunes is also active. However I cannot find any of those threads at the moment to help direct you to better details.
Yes, I do have new images on my camera. When they didn't appear in Aperture, I opened iPhoto, and they showed up there.
This is indeed curious. Without any really good ideas at the moment, I would suggest [Troubleshooting Basics|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805], as there may be something wrong with your library.

  • Lightroom vs Capture One

I just got a dutch Photo Mag that compared Lightroom 2 to Capture One 4. I was amazed at the conclusion Capture One won the contest, based upon image quality results. I immediately downloaded a 30 day trial and compared LR, PS cS3 and CO side by side on my 30inch HD cinema display. Yes I could see a difference, especially that CO is able to deliver a bit more contrast while still keeping dark areas visible. It's difficult to compare sharpening because values don't match (compared LR 100-0,8 to CO 170-0,8).
Anyone working with Capture One and willing to share experiences?
    Thank you.

I did a lot of work on this a while ago - C1 is very popular in the Leica M8 world. Bottom line is that a lot of the perceived difference in color is really a different tone curve. An LR brightness setting of about 35 gives a similar tone curve to C1.
If you want dig into enormous detail around color differences between LR, Aperture and C1, go here:
    http://chromasoft.blogspot.com/2008/01/lightroom-aperture-and-capture-one-mini_24.html
Note however that the work above was pre-DNG profiles, it applies to old ACR type rendering.
I also posted some settings on how to get C1-like colors from Lightroom here:

  • Aperture D600 Raw Files too dark?

Is anyone else seeing that their Nikon D600 raw files stink in Aperture? I realize that Apple backwards engineers Raw support but if I look at a file from my D600 on Aperture and Capture NX2, the difference is 10-fold. I can see detail in the shadows in the NX2 conversion and nothing but black in the Aperture conversion. I have never seen this much of a disparity and I have used well over a dozen different DSLR's. I am curious if anyone else is seeing this? I mean in one image I can see a staircase in the NX2 conversion and nothing but black in Aperture?

"Neutral" on the camera means nothing.  Those control the JPEG previews only and do not affect RAW files.
Yes I know. However, that JPEG preview is what you see on the back of the camera so having all parameters set to as little post-processing as possible will help give you a more accurate preview of the Raw file. I will give you some more background... Our first DSLR was a Canon 10D. This was before Aperture v1.0. We moved to a 20D, a 30D, a 40D, switched to Nikon and used a D80, 90, 300, 300s, 7000, and 600. I have photographers whose files I process that included Fuji (yikes!), Canon 7D, 5D, & 5DMII. Haven't had a Sony camera yet. I started with Aperture v1 and am now using the latest Aperture release. I have a very good understanding of the process.
@ funkcanna, thanks. I haven't used a D4 but it is good to hear I am not going crazy! Yes, the files just go to crap when you click on one. I too hope this is not a sign of things to come... I really don't like Lightroom but for now, I have no choice.

  • Aperture RAW conversion and noise

I've been using Aperture for many years and have recently learned something useful about how to tweak the RAW conversion settings.  Until recently I just left them at the default settings for my camera, a Panasonic GH2.
Anyhow I've not been entirely happy with shadow noise (otherwise I reckon it's a great camera).  Many web sites say that a degree of shadow noise is normal for this camera, so I didn't figure mine was any different.  I tried a variety of noise reduction approaches but none really made a worthwhile improvement.
Until a few days ago when I tried tweaking the 'Raw Fine Tuning' settings - and I found a way to make things *much* better.
Please note that the following comments may only be relevant to Panasonic RAW files, and maybe only for the GH2.  I don't know if they apply to other cameras (though I think they may.
It turns out that for the GH2, the default 'Raw Fine Tuning' setting includes 'Sharpening' of 0.78 and 'Edges' of 0.79.  This is fairly aggressive sharpening, but I didn't really realise what it was doing to noise until I  discovered that was significantly increasing shadow noise -even at base ISO!
If I set these both the sharpening sliders in the Raw Fine Tuning section to '0', the 'grain' in the shadows is much smoother - a massive improvement.
But, of course, the image is a bit less 'sharp'.  Well, this isn't much of a problem with 16+ megapixel cameras.  Unless you are making huge enlargements from originals, and really look closely at the finest details at 100%, it makes very little difference if you give up this 'sharpness'.  But the reduction in noise is actually very obvious indeed.  It's much better!
Most of the sharpness I need on these less noisy images can easily be added by including the 'Edge Sharpen' adjustment, either at the defailt settings, or marginally toned down a bit.  I'm currently using Intensity 0.7, Edges 0.3 and Falloff 0.4.  This leaves most smooth areas untouched, so the 'noise' or 'grain' in smooth areas is as it comes from the sensor.  By toggling the Edge Sharpen on and off, I can easily confirm no change in 100% or 200% loupe views.
That level of edge sharpening is a bit subtle, but actually achieves most of what I got from the Raw Fine Tuning sharpening sliders.  It will be applied only to in-focus contrasty things like eyelashes or hairs or other defined edges, and very nicely.
So I'm sharing this in case other people also find it helpful.  I strongly suggest removing the default sharpening entirely, and only using the Edge Sharpening slider in a cautious manner if you want to enhance sharpness.
    Some related web pages:
    http://www.jonroemer.com/blog/2011/01/aperture-3-too-sharp-tweak-the-default/
    http://www.twin-pixels.com/raw-processors-review-aperture-bibble-capture-one-dxo -lightroom/
PS - there is a different issue with the default Raw Fine Tuning 'Boost' and 'Hue Boost' sliders, both of which are set to 1' by default.  It turns out that these introduce a very large amount of contrast and exposure gain - turn them down to zero and the image goes quite dark and flat!  The Aperture user guide says something about Hue Boost changing colours when Boost is set to '1' and this is the case.  So I've experimented with turning them both to zero, and instead using a custom curves adjustment to achieve a similar level of exposure and contrast to the default conversion and the camera's default JPG image.  By fine-tweaking the curves one can get better control of blown highlights and the overall contrast.  I'm not sure if the colours are 'better', but I think so.  I am fairly sure that I get smoother transitions in the mid-tonal ranges with this approach rather than just using Apple's default settings.  Maybe they are a but strong for my liking.  Certainly I can make curves that rarely require the 'Recovery' slider to fix over-boosted highlights.  Anyhow, you may also find that this tweak helps a bit.  Interestingly on a Canon RAW file the effect is not nearly as great in exposure terms, but there is also a definite colour change.
PSS - the end result is that I have set my camera preset for RAW fine tuning to zero settings for boost, hue boost, sharpening and edges.  I then add contrast as needed using curves, and sharpen only with a little edge sharpening.  I've then saved a few Presets with slightly different contrast curves and all with a little edge sharpening.  I can very quickly select the level of contrast needed, and I am very confident that my results are quite a bit better, with better tonal gradations and much less noise.
    Hope this helps
    Chris.

Nice observations, Chris.  I think the RAW Fine Tuning is often overlooked, even though it's a vital first step in RAW processing, and really the whole point of shooting RAW in the first place.  Too much boost yields horrible skin tones in my experience.  I have a default of .50 Boost and Hue Boost, Sharpening and Edges at .25, Moire .50, Radius 12.0 and Denoise .25.  I've found these are "mid range" settings for the Canon 5Dii, and first make small adjustments to the Fine Tuning brick before moving on to exposure adjustments.

  • OS X and 3-letter extensions: is there no way to get Aperture to make them?

I just realised that I've asked this before, and found no solution. Thankfully the image batch going to the client was just 13 files, so I could delete a single 'f' from *.tiff manually, but why is there no way to fix this?
Aperture, Image Capture, Grab, iPhoto... they all save *.tiff and *.jpeg. iTunes and all its full fat friends in audio save *.aiff as well, which all cause issues when working with clients (I mean, other people) who might be using Windows or Linux.
    t

I just created a.tiff file on windows 7, no problem. It even gave me the option of tif or tiff, though I had to add the extra f. The days of 8.3 are long gone.

  • Which RAW convertor - Nikon or Aperture?

I have just started playing with RAW, and have a question about work flow and RAW converters. I have Nikon Capture NX and Aperture, and see that some features are better in Capture and others in Aperture. I've been importing into Aperture, and if I see I need to use a Capture feature, export the NEF file from Aperture to Capture. When done, I re-import into Aperture. My concern is, should I be spending time in Aperture, or should I start working on each file from Capture. Also, if I import into Capture, the RAW converter will make adjustments automatically, before I see the picture. Would these adjustments look the same in Aperture, with Apple's RAW converter? If not, when I save the updated picture in Capture and then import into Aperture, will I see a different picture? Does that mean I would have to "recreate the wheel" in Aperture to see the same result that I had in Capture?
Thanks in advance for your help with this.

  • How to Delete imported JPEGS after matching RAW files are imported as masters

Using a 5D Mark III and shoot JPEG (SD) and RAW (CF).
Aperture 3.5.1, using a managed library
Perviously, using a 7D so new to shooting JPEG and RAWs from an aperture Aperture workflow standpoint.
I know that i can import the JPEGs > delete images that do not make the cut > then import the matching RAW files in the import dialogue that correspond to the JPEGs in the Aperture Library.
I use the RAW files as my Camera Master images and once the RAW files are imported, the smaller resolution JPEGs are no longer needed or viewed in my normal edit workflow.  I only need the JPEGs to quickly go through the images to find out which RAW files i need to import at a later time to increase the speed of import > edit > deliver.
    My Assumptions:
    1.  Logic would lead me to believe that after import the user should see a stack like image representation with whatever file type is considered Master to be on top and the viewable secondary file type on the bottom.  clicking on the image stack should allow you to see both file types as you would normally see with image stacks with the same files types.  This is not the case...  What am i missing here?
    2.  Logic again would lead me to believe that when i have the ability to delete one of the 2 image types as i do not need both in the end.  After the import process is complete and RAWs are backed up, I want to delete the JPEG files as they are just taking up more space on my DAS drive array...  There is no need to keep a duplicate of every file in both JPEG and RAW format.  This is not the case as when i delete the JPEG or RAW, both files formats are deleted simultaneously.  What am i missing here?
    Problems: (correspond to Assumptions above)
    1.  I do not seem to have access to both images (JPEG & RAW) in a stack where i can expand and close the stack to see both?  It seems like i only have access to the image type i have selected as Master?  This seems counter intuitive to what the workflow should be as why would aperture 'lock the secondary file types away' so you can't easily view both file types as the same time for comparison?
2a.  Reality seems to be that i do not have access to the JPEG and RAW image files.  I can only see one at a time by selecting the images and choosing 'make JPEG master’ and then respectively... 'make RAW master', but you can't see both at the same time for file comparison.
2b.  Also, I can't find a way to delete the JPEG images after the RAW files have been imported.  I would presume most professional photographers shoot RAW and do not shoot JPEG as their camera master or editing master images.  I do not understand why aperture has captured both as a pair in the library that does not allow me to delete the JPEG (in this case) as i have selected the RAW as my master.
If someone can please help...  The function seems like either i am missing something obvious or that the implemented function of using RAW + JPEGs files for import is broken from a real world workflow standpoint.

    leonie...
thank you for clearing that up for me.
I think that at this point it is silly to use the JPEG+RAW import functionality as it seems that it takes longer to do the above steps than to just import only the RAW files and press on from there.
I seems what i have done in the past of only importing the RAW files and then using the quick preview functionality to reduce image load times is the best thing in can come up with without keeping 'duplicates' in the database.
That really baffels me that there is no built in functionality to remove the JPEG from a RAW+JPEG pair and i wonder how the real world photographers who help Apple test and implement software to solve real world workflow problems thought the JPEG+RAW import was going to be used.
I do understand that i can use a smaller JPEG file size to reduce the bloat of the database, but used over hundreds of thousands of images is certainly going to make a dent in my total aperture database size and therefore storage needs down the road.
If you have any other workflow thoughts, or know of a 3rd party plugin/ etc... to fix this obvious shortcoming then i am all ears..
thank you again Leonie and have a great week

  • Cannot see images occassionally: "Out of memory"

    Hi,
I love Lightroom, but have the problem that is really interfering with my work. When I look at a larger collection of images (100+), every now and then the image area will be greyed out, and it will say 'Out Of Memory' in red (upside down and back to front) in the lower left corner.
This never happens when I am looking at thumbnails in Library-mode. It does happen when I am looking one image in Library-mode, in deverloper mode, and frequently in the Slide-show mode. Interestingly enough: when an image is not visible in Library-mode, chances are it is visible in Developer-mode and Slide-show (and vice-versa).
I use Lightroom for a lot of subtle retouching, so I can imagine the files are large. I would understand in Slide-show that the CPU simply doesn't have the time to render the image with all the alterations I apply to it -- but in Developer and Libarary-mode I can wait and wait, and the image nevr shows up. Then I go to Developer, and there it is!
I store my images on a seperate dedicated external harddisk connected through USB 2.0. I have browsed through the forum already, and found a solution in changing the windows pageview setting. I did this, but it made no difference. The problem still occurs with the same frequency. I have not installed LR 1.1 yet; the negative reports on this forum have scared me: I really don't need my database messed up right now.
Any suggestions you might have will be greatly appreciated!

    Guys,
Before I start this rant... I LOVE LIGHTROOM... but no more ADOBE, I cannot stand it anymore... sort out the OOM errors now, before I put my Lightroom CD into the shredder and then post this SHAM on every ADOBE forum I can find.
I have experienced the out of memory error 11 times today. I am working with 30,000+ images in Lightroom 1.1 on XP, but only looking through 58 files while doing an import of 100 files I get the "OUT OF MEMORY A2" error. This looks suspiciously like another of the, now famous, debug errors used by the developers to track the 'pain' issues. I would challenge Adobe that they know EXACTLY why this happens, a limitation in the programming techniques for their chosen development platform is highlighting issues in the Windows Memory sub-system and they cannot do diddly squat about it... they are just 'attempting' to clean up memory leaks where they can, by putting markers (A2) into the code. It would seem that they are down a creek without the proverbial paddle.
Tom Hogarty & ADOBE listen up... stabilize the memory issues stop listening to your marketing bods who are probably leaning over your shoulder as I write these words. You are going to suffer at the hands of Aperture and Capture One if you dont get your act together. I have used both of the above with little or NO errors at all.
Tell us ADOBE why do none of your engineers or developers talk openly about OOM errors, stop silencing them... lets get a discussion going there are some very capable developers out there willing to help for FREE! Are you mad... admit the problems and get people to help... Open Standards could teach you guys a thing or two!
Remember for everyone of of us that actually has the balls to complain, there are a 1000 who just sit and suffer not knowing what to do!
Fix the OOM issues before you do anything else this week!! Provide an interim 1.1.x update and make people happy they bought ADOBE and above all else remember at the end of the day these people PAY your wages.

  • How do I upload pictures from iphone 5c and iPhoto for editing in photoshop elements 12 please?

I used to be able to edit all my iphoto pictures in PSE10. I  set the advanced section of preferences in iphoto to edit in PSE.  Since installing Photoshop Elements 12, I cannot get the transfer into PSE  of the photos (unedited and unreduced)  to work.
The general preferences only give a camera the options of connecting to iphoto, aperture, image capture, or, no application. Assuming my phone is a camera for editing purposes, I would like to give it the option of connecting to PSE 12.
Also, I would like to import my photos from the iphone 5C into PSE12 for editing. There is an import action in PSE12 which does not seem to work with the imac and iphone.
In addition, my email application is greyed out in the general preferences;  I use Microsoft Outlook for Mac.
How can I change the settings  in 'general' and 'advanced' preferences to work for me, Please?
