Aperture with .mac vs other web hosting sites

A new guy here with a couple of questions concerning using Aperture to post webpages, etc. I'd really appreciate some advice from you photogs already in the business.
Disclaimer: Forgive my ignorance, but years of using a PC have turned my brain into mush. Therefore, some of these questions might be quite laughable.
I'm wanting to set up a website for a photography business. I already have a domain name but am still setting up a website. I use Aperture for most of my work and would like to continue the Apple flow into .mac. However, I am torn over whether I should set up a website for my clients to visit using a .mac account or some other website such as SmugMug
1. How well does Aperture work with .mac? Do you find it easier to do everything in Aperture and send it out to other websites other than .mac?
2. How user friendly is .mac for you and your customers?
3. What advice can you give me in setting up an easy and user-friendly site that gives customers easy access to a professional looking site and still maintain easy business transactions?

Why can I not organise (or even know) where my Photo

Well, .Mac makes things simpler but also sometimes a bit harder in that it helpfully places things for you...
You can however change things around after publishing, the thing to do is go to that "iDisk" icon in the finder. There look in the "Sites" folder, and you will find all of the web galleries Aperture (or iWeb) has generated. You can move them from there and the url for anything in that Sites directory will always be "http://homepage.mac.com/<.Mac username/<foldername>" where foldername is the name of a folder in Sites.
You can use the names there to get an idea of what you have published and also clean things up.

I have some questions regarding .mac using iweb 08. I am currently
using the trial and doing some testing. My wife wants to design
a nice family website, I am somewhat familiar with web design as I
work as a system administrator. Can you add pages you create
elsewhere to the .mac site, for example in dreamweaver? Will it
suppose activex, flash, etc. Can you directly edit the pages
you create in iweb with other tools? Basically i'm looking
for a pros and cons list for going with .mac versus another
hosting company. I like the capability of using iweb but
hosting it elsewhere, will this work? I understand there
are apps to make this easy to do. Any advice is appreciated. Also
we need the capability to have message boards also.

I think there is a difference if you as a professional or experienced web tools user want to make a web site or if your wife (if she does not have web skills) want to make a web site.
For you that is probably not the most flexible system but for the unexperienced it is perfect. There is almost no learning curve and within a very short time a layperson can have a nice published web site. I do believe that is what Apple had in mind.

.Mac server speed vs. other web hosting services

Does anyone have any direct experience comparing the speed with which iWeb pages load on other web hosting services in comparison with .Mac?
I find that when I access my site using IE on a Windows platform, the load times can be pretty slow. Do other web hosting services load iWeb pages quicker?
Is the problem iWeb, the .Mac server or both?
I am going to need to use iWeb, does it make any sense to switch to another web hosting service (e.g., blue host) to post my site developed in iWeb or will it make no difference?

iWeb offers try WYSIWYG page, which is cool, but if you get away from the standard websafe fonts, your site will be a bunch of fat PNGs and not HTML text, since the text fields will all turn into images. I went to a iWeb-created site recently that had two screens worth of text that iWeb had converted to a PNG. The text on the page took forever to download since it was a 650K image.
As previously mentioned IE (Mac or PC) has never rendered PNGs well. It's hard to imagine it doesn't support a Web-standard image format that's been around as long as the Web has. No wonder FireFox use is growing so fast.
There are other things that can be done to shrink site size and speed up loading. Basics, like limiting most pages to one screen, using a basic font like Verdana, and keeping images to small screen sizes. Also importing photo albums and images for blogs through iPhoto's button keeps them all as JPEGS. Movies and music are a really killer too, since iWeb loads those cool QT frames. When you have more than one per page, loading time can take forever.

as long as osx supports it, iweb should work beyond june 2012 as an app by itself.
however, the some of the currently published code will break when mme servers are to shut down; unless apple comes up with a patches by then.
most of mme features can be replaced and fully implemented on other host servers.
Password protection
can be implemented with apache server.
Blog and photo comments
with Intense Debate commenting system, ex:

The followings are the instructions and i have follow them but i do not know how to create a web.xml file to store in the folder indicated for example a HelloServlet that im testing :
To setup servlet, you need to configure servlet into the file web.xml which needs to be placed in /var/www/html/WEB-INF directory.
www root directory or webapps:/var/www/htm
Classes directory located in: /var/www/html/WEB-INF/Classes/
There you will need to upload your Java class file.
Our default url-mapping for servlet is: /servlet/*
To check servlet in your browser: www.mydomain.net/servlet/HelloWorld
Jsp Files - Upload anywhere in /var/www/html
all the above steps are follow except the web.xml file which i suppose to write and store in the folder... but i actually try to write one but i still cannot load my servlet on the webpage... test on standalone tomcat works.

My website- created on iWeb (Mac) now uploaded to hosting site, does not show content on 4 pages of photos, though Safari shows everything. ???

All the photos were saved on jpeg format. You can see the text on each page of concern, but not the photos. I have added music to each page of concern with a button to manipulate on/off, and pasted jpeg photos to them which you can see, and music plays with no problem. I re-built the site and uploaded again to hosting site, and am having same problem. Safari shows all pages, text, jpeg photos/music without any problem. So I have a site of 6 pages, and only 2 are completely loadable with Firefox. I have made all updates that have come from Firefox. My Mac is OS X version 10.5.8

Make sure that you use the latest version of the iWeb software to generate the galleries. Older versions of iWeb had problems in current Firefox versions.

Well I'm actually using the Java programming for writing the program I'll be using in the office. Right now the only thing I can imagine using the web hosting for is hosting pictures and also a fairly simple website which I planned on using MySQL, PHP, or CGI for the databases.
So if the lack of JSP support is the only problem anyone can think of for this site then it may be just what I'm looking for.

yes, a little. it's nice for people not used to setting up from source or doing tons of stuff in the command line. it installs like any other mac application & puts a nice control pane in system preferences. plus, you can set up for updates to keep everything current with patches.
I'm not sure how to handle the multiple domains, but whatever you find on apache that covers this should also or mostly apply to you too.

How To associate a default Template with an asset in web center sites 11g

In previous versions we could associate a template with an asset, in the edit mode of the asset and that template would be used to render that asset when previewed.
How can we do that in Web center Sites 11 g so that we don't have to select it again and again.

You should still have that option, in the Contributor UI when you edit or inspect an asset beneath the asset name is a drop-down box to select the default Template for this asset.

It has nothing to do with Firefox -- it sounds like the sites you're trying to go to are already taken down. If that's the case, try clicking the Google's results' "Cached" button, or just try the other results Google gave you.

Uploading JPEG to web hosting site

I can't upload my JPEG photos onto a hosting site because I believe the files are too large; I shoot all my pictures in maximum resolution. The hosting site limits photo size to 500KB. How do I reduce my large files down to 500KB? Sorry for this elementary question; I'm new to this computer stuff.

Select the photos in iPhoto and Export them from iPhoto (file menu ==> export) as JPEGs - one of the export options is to set the export size

Once I publish my site with a web hosting site can I still edit and update the site in Muse? Can I add and delete pages to the site?

Very confused about publishing the Muse site. It sound like I won't be able to edit a lot of it once it is published. I need to be able to add and delete pages and edit the content on existing pages over time. It is saying that the temporary version of the site will delete after 30 days. Am I misunderstanding?

It sounds like you didn't upload the css files folder that Muse generates. There is also scripts file, assets file/images file that Muse generates

Yes! You do see your own domain and page path.
e.g. http://www.epiwellness.com/Site/Welcome.html
not just http://www.epiwellness.com/ no matter what page you are on, like what you see if you use godaddy.com "forwarding" option.
URL definitely changes when you change pages.
