Aperture won't import .bmp files

I just set up Aperture (v. 1.5.4), and imported from iPhoto Library. All the .jpegs and .tiffs transferred over, but the .bmp files didn't. I tried to manually import them, but when I selected the folder they're in for import, the .bmp files didn't even show up as possible selections. They're there, but Aperture doesn't recognize them.
Any way around this?

"Compatible with all major still image formats
JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, PDF, PSD(2)"
Note that BMP is not in that list, probably because it's a relatively rare image format these days.
Your only way around this is to convert the files into another format. This is actually quite easy using Automator.
1. Open Automator, click on Preview in the Library pane and drag a 'Change Type of Images' action into the main area.
2. If you want to over-write the BMP files, don't add a copy action when Automator asks. I'd recommend leaving the copy action in and pointing it towards another folder.
3. Pick a file format to convert to, such as JPEG. Note that there aren't any compression options.
4. File>Save as Plug-in... and choose Finder from the drop-down menu. Give it a sensible name such as 'convert to JPEG' and this will now turn up in the Automator part of the contextual menus in the Finder.
From now on whenever you want to convert a file to a JPEG, right-click on it and choose Automator>(whatever you named the action) and all selected files that you clicked on will be converted.

  • Aperture won't import DNG files: Panasonic Lumix FZ28

Well, i went to a seminar on aperture and got all excited to use it, downloaded the trial and discovered that it won't import my camera's RAW files (even though it came out 2 years ago and is supported in PhotoShop)
I've tried various way of creating DNG files with DNG Converter (the one that works with PS CS3) but Aperture doesn't recognize those, either. (linear, non linear etc) (Will the CS4 converter do the job?)
Is there anything else I should be trying? Have any of you had success with the same camera and what do you do?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    Elizabeth

Yep, that's what I discovered and it's the whole problem with the RAW files, but what about DNG?
I thought converting to DNG might allow them to be accessed: so you're telling me that I'm out of luck and have to stick with PhotoShop?
That dng is not a universal format recognized by Aperture?
    I appreciate your input

  • Aperture won't import DNG files with my adjustments from LR

When I export my images from LR2 as DNG and import them into Aperture3, although they look fine in the import window, when I view them in projects they have lost all the modifications I put into them.
I then tried to import them as TIFF 16 which worked but the image size quadrupled and I'm loath to use TIFF 8 due to the loss of information.
Am I doing something wrong? I thought DNG was a universal format so why can't Aperture recognise the adjustments and modifications?

Edits in LR do not modify the DNG/raw other than embedding metadata that "calls out" editing instructions that would, in any case, be unique to Lightroom. As someone else noted, their may be no equivalent in Aperture for a particular LR edit. DNG may be a universal format but the metadata that's written to a DNG could be proprietary.
I'm afraid the only way to retain your LR edits in Aperture will be to export the data in a format that actually renders your edits to the image. If file size is a concern, I would suggest either 16bit Photoshop "PSD" or 16bit compressed TIFF. I would also suggest using AdobeRGB as your export profile/working space as I believe this is the internal color space of Aperture...I would assume Aperture is intelligent enough to honor tagged/embedded profiles but....on the other hand...I wouldn't assume!

  • IMovie Won't Import MP4 Files

For some reason iMovie '11 won't let me import videos.  Specifically, I'm trying to add MP4 files that I copied to my hard drive from my GoPro HD 960.  For GoPro users, I used the R2 (720p) format.  They open properly in QuickTime and VLC but can't be imported into iMovie (or iPhoto).  When I select File-->Import-->Movies and browse to the directory where I saved all the .mp4 files on my hard drive, they're all greyed out.  And actually, it seems that just about no video files at all on my computer can be added (all greyed out)--even other MP4 files.
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip but that says "unrecognized file format" when I try opening the videos.  I also installed Perian and rebooted.
    In case it helps:
    - I have an Intel MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 with iLife '11
    - QuickTime info for the video format says "H.264, 1280 x 720, Millions; AAC, 2 channels, 48000 Hz"
    - VLC says "Stream 0 (Video) - Codec: avc1" and "Stream 1 (Audio) - Codec: mp4a"
Any ideas?  This is incredibly frustrating!

Why iMovie Won't Import MP4 Files?
Technically, iMovie does import MP4 video. However, iMovie only import MP4 files that are encoded with MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC data. And yet, MP4 is a video container format that may contain various audio and video codec (and sometimes even subtitle streams included). If the MP4 file is not encoded with iMovie support codec, iMovie will refuse to import this kind of MP4 video.
How to Solve Can't Import MP4 into iMovie?
In order to successfully import all kinds of MP4 files to iMovie, a recommended solution is to convert iMovie unrecognized MP4 to iMovie supported video format.
iDealshare VideoGo is just the right MP4 to iMovie Converter which can convert various MP4 to iMovie supported MPEG-4, MPEG-2, MOV or DV. Besides converting MP4 to iMovie, iDealshare VideoGo also helps to convert other video formats including AVI, WMV, MPEG, VOB, MOV, AVCHD, MTS, M2T, M2TS, TOD, MOD, XAVC, FLV, MKV, SWF, 3GP, MVI, ASF and etc to iMovie video format.

Premiere CS6 won't import mov files, the message: "file has no video or audio streams" shows up instead. How can I import the files?

MOV is a wrapper that can contain many different codecs. The message you get is indicative of a distribution codec inside the MOV wrapper. You may need to convert the material to an editable codec before importing.

  • Lightroon 2.5 won't import raw files

Lightroom 2.7 won't import raw files from folder. After I choose files and click they come up as a white file that says (preview not available for this image )  and I  can't go any further. Have no trouble importing JPEGS.

So, what changed? Assuming the camera is supported in LR 2.7 then something changed...you still haven't indicated the OS...I would try a card reader (takes the camera setting out of the factor).

  • LR 5.3 won't import .mov files from iphone 5s

I'm running Mavericks and LR 5.3 and have had trouble importing video files from my iphone 5s.  All of my software is up to date.  It seems that LR is having trouble connecting to the dynamic link server.  It doesn't work even when I disable my firewall.  I've already purged my video cache in LR.  Is there anything else I should try?

There are many, many posts of this nature in these forums.  See, for example:
    iphoto won’t import mov video
For many, rebuilding the XPC helper cache solves the problem off the bat. In terminal try this, and reboot:
    sudo /usr/libexec/xpchelper --rebuild-cache
The above posted by Andy Ball on a thread related to a similar problem with Aperture:
Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion
    Other things to try:
    1. create a fresh iPhoto library and try that.  (hold down opt while launching iPhoto)
    2. create a new OS X user (in system preferences) and try there.
In my case – and many cases – neither of those things work either, which means the problem is system wide.  Again suggesting that the xpc helper solution might work. But for me it did not either.
There are other suggestions that there are conflicts with Perian (on Yosemite) and flip4mac.  In my case uninstalling both of those didn't solve it either.
So maybe one of those solutions will work for you, results apparently vary.  But this is a huge unresolved issue many others are having as well.  I have a case with a senior apple advisor open, still unresolved. His suggestion of course, at this point, is an archive and re-install. I'm not ready to go there yet.
BTW, another thing he had me try was to import the file with Image Capture (which works).  Then open it in QuickTime Player X.  Then try exporting to 480p.  Does QuickTime crash?  It does for me.
    My summary:
    1. Files successfully import with Image Player.
    2. Files play with QuickTime Player X.
    3. QuickTime Player X crashes when exporting to 480p.
    4. Files import with iMove.
    5. Files fail to import with iPhoto (unrecognized format as with OP)
    6. iPhoto import failure/errors are system wide and not specific to a library or a user.
    7. rebuilding xpchelper cache and rebooting in my case does not resolve issue.
    8. same videos import fine in iPhoto on a totally different system (laptop running same versions of OS X 10.10 and iPhoto 9.5.1)

  • Aperture won't read DNG files

I'm sure there's a simple solution I've missed, but Aperture 3 won't open DNG files converted from Olympus RAW (ORF). Any suggestions?
    Brian

Aperture 3.5.1 and the camera is the Olympus OM-D E-M5.
And yes, Aperture will convert the RAW/ORF files but the devil is in the details. And since you asked (sort of), here are the details:
I own and have happily used Photoshop CS4 for the layered compositing I like to do, but it won't support ORF files
I tried importing/converting them in Aperture then editing in PS4 ... but Aperture 3 and PS4 don't play together well, so many come back as "unsupported file format"
Apple can't fix the problem and Adobe no longer supports PS4... put another way, Apple can't do anythig but they care, and Adobe could do everything but they don't care
It got worse when I upgraded to Mavericks, so to get around that I had to upgrade to Photoshop CC and pay the monthly "rental"
Aperture and Photoshop now work, but the demands of running them both are beyond my aging iMac that can't be upgraded, so I have to buy a new one, but the monthly fee (which everybody assumes will only go up in cost)  + purchase of a new iMac for a guy on a fixed income are too much
So, I thought if I used DNG to convert the ORF files I could import them into Aperture for all the basics and organization, then use PS4 for the compositing... but Aperture won't read the DNG conversions.
And that, as the man used to say, is the name of that tune,
    Brian
